Frisking the Fixtures – Gameweek 31 – The Strong

The lure of six matches in four Gameweeks hands Fantasy managers an obvious cast of teams to consider for the immediate future. While three of the sides to benefit from such a schedule dominate our “frisking” analysis, we also call in on a set of teams that should perhaps not be overlooked given their opponents, motivation and, in one particular case, their history for a meteoric season run-in.

Man City

mancity

With the title at stake, City have both the schedule and the impetus to deliver the results we came to expect of them earlier in the season. Although crucial away trips to Arsenal and Liverpool beckon during the next four Gameweeks, Manuel Pellegrini’s attacking assets shouldn’t be overlooked given that they will need to show their goalscoring prowess against their title rivals. Meanwhile, there are home matches with Fulham, Southampton and Sunderland packaged up in this spell, who will surely be overwhelmed by the City juggernaut at the Etihad.

With ties against West Brom and Crystal Palace to follow and a third double Gameweek to come, the reasons for investing are evident. Sadly, the targets are less apparent. Sergio Aguero’s Dairylea hamstrings remain a concern, while Aleks Kolorov’s love/hate relationship with the teamsheet is a headache with just one cure – looking elsewhere. That leaves David Silva and Yaya Toure as the clear targets, with Samir Nasri and Edin Dzeko offering the poor man’s options – in more ways than one.

Everton

everton

The Fantasy manager’s uneasy relationship with the Toffees looks set to continue, courtesy of their second double-header looming in Gameweek 34. While Seamus Coleman’s fortuitous winner earned Roberto Martinez a late three points against Cardiff, Fantasy managers will approach Gameweek 31’s ties with Swansea and Newcastle looking for something more convincing. Coleman may have delivered but Everton’s attack has mustered just three goals in their last four league outings, with Romelu Lukaku and Kevin Mirallas frustrating their owners with Saturday blanks.

In many respects it’s hard to ignore the Merseysiders, with a trip to Fulham to follow, plus a second double Gameweek against Sunderland and Crystal Palace. However, those are all sides scrapping for survival, with motivation flowing through their veins. Everton will have to be on their mettle, then, and there’s perhaps reason to court caution when considering a defence that boasts just one shut-out in seven. Meanwhile, only Lukaku appears to offer the security of starts we’d want for double Gameweek coverage.

Sunderland

sunderland

The Black Cats are unfortunate enough to figure on the schedule of both teams discussed thus far and yet they still warrant a mention in their own right. While their six Gameweeks looks, at first glance, a swathe of red, they still offer up the six matches in four Gameweeks that becomes almost a pre-requisite for any signing ahead of this weekend’s deadline.

Saturday’s crunchy call on Norwich carries some potential, as does the home clash with mid-table West Ham – surely earmarked as a must-win by Gus Poyet. The Gameweek 33 trip to Spurs seems unlikely to shoo the Black Cats, while the home clash with Everton should be another targeted by Poyet for vital points.

His team are perhaps the best equipped of the relegation strugglers, blessed with an inspired keeper in Vito Manonne, a determined back-four, complete with a Phil Bardsley goal threat and, in Adam Johnson, a sparky talent set for a late check-in for the plane to Rio. Our sights will surely fail to waver from these three targets and the sheer number, if not quality, of their fixtures has to keep them on our radar – particularly as, like City, Sunderland have another double-header to come in Gameweek 37.

Also Consider…

Swansea
While Gary Monk’s side have the two fixtures in Gameweek 31, they find themselves on the road at Everton and Arsenal, so it’s fair to say that expectations are low. Nonetheless, the Swans have scored in each of their last five and follow their murderous double with home encounters against Norwich and Villa and visits to Hull and Newcastle. Michu’s return to fitness my yet provide a spark, while Wilfried Bony has three goals and an assist in his last five, despite the recent malaise.

Chelsea
Saturday’s visit of Arsenal may skew the ticker somewhat, but Jose Mourinho’s side still have a schedule that suggests that they remain title favourites. With no double Gameweek in play and hefty price tags, Fantasy managers will be tempted to cash in their Chelsea assets but may live to regret that almost immediately. Following the clash with the Gunners, Mourinho’s men have a run of four matches (cpl STO swa SUN) that may see them pull clear in the title race and cement their back four and Eden Hazard as season heavyweights.

Aston Villa
In the current landscape, the lack of a double Gameweek is an immediate turn-off but Villa put up a superb display against Chelsea and that win could yet provide the catalyst for an end-of-season flourish. We saw them blitz opponents at the tail-end of last season, and with Stoke, Fulham and Southampton paying visit, Christian Benteke has the platform to replicate the form that saw him score eight in the last nine in his debut campaign.

Norwich
Another team without the lure of two fixtures, the Canaries have, nonetheless, got an immediate schedule that suggests they may yet drag themselves to safety. The next four are all against relegation rivals and, while they continue to struggle at both ends, in Robert Snodgrass they have a Fantasy asset producing his most consistent run of returns this term.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

If you had already taken a -8 hit to get 9 DGW players, would you take another hit to do

I stupidly have Joel Campbell on my squad, with Marcelo on the bench.

If I remove Campbell for Marcelo now, in the hope that M. will come off the bench today, can I sub Campbell back in tomorrow for my lowest scoring player?

Let's talk double gameweek strikers, because I really don't think the three slots are as much of a foregone conclusion as some think.

I am seriously considering losing Lukaku. Yes, those fixtures are beyond good, but his and Everton's form is really not great, and for a double gameweek striker, I want some assurance that there won't be more repeats of last week's fail.

The alternatives though look just as punty if not worse, and it then becomes a question of figuring out who's the most likely to deliver. If we take that SAS is a must and that's two spots taken, that last spot comes down to:

    Lukaku - 8.5m
The popular pick. Two double gameweeks, easy fixtures, potential price rises, likely to play both games. Almost everything is a check here apart from one crucial element and that's form. Yes, he's had two goals since coming back, but one in a cameo and one in the cup, hardly indicative of longer term threat. I just get the feeling he could do something like a blank and a lone assist for a bruising 7 points in the double.

    Carroll - 7.1m
The differential pick of choice so far. A real dark horse, just returned from injury. Great fixtures, arguably better than Everton's double. However, the minutes look to be a concern and his injury record means he'll likely get subbed off after the hour mark or so. He's cheaper than Lukaku which is a real perk and can help get a few more of Silva, Gerrard and Toure in the midfield.

    Giroud - 8.6m
Yes, his double gameweek isn't as nice as some, and his subsequent fixtures aren't great either, but his overall points tally for the season doesn't lie. He's the fourth highest scoring forward in the game with a double gameweek. It would be silly to not pay attention to that, and he comes in at just 0.1m more than Lukaku right now. The surrounding weakness in fixtures is likely a big deterrent to those without a wildcard since it would be fishing for quick points, but that fishing could well pay off, since Arsenal are still a dangerous side, and have arguably the most nailed on striker of all the double gameweekers in 31.

    Dzeko - 6.7m
At the way things stand, Dzeko has enormous upside but also comes with a great deal of risk. We don't know who Pellegrini will want to play upfront in any given day, and considering Aguero, if reports are to be believed, has a chance of returning to the team sometime in the double means that he might get the dreaded 15 minute cameo.

    Jelavic - 6.7m
The fixtures in the next four are great, and Hull have everything to play for. Jelly will start both games for sure and could be down for some good points. There's really nothing too wrong with picking Jelavic. He's a differential, he'll get minutes, and his stats and form haven't been too bad either. The thing is, he plays for Hull City, one of the most inconsistent teams in the league and he's just as likely to put up a bunch of blanks if the team just has an off-day.

    Conclusion:
It's really tough to call. Laying it out like this, my short-term preferences go to Carroll and Jelavic for their good double gameweek fixtures and motivation to win. I might end up going for Jelavic for Hull cover since I have Nolan already.

There's no denying it though, Lukaku is definitely the safe pick, and even if he's a disappointment in the double, there's another coming up and good fixtures so it doesn't stop there. I'm not a fan of Dzeko since his minutes in a double gameweek are so up in the air, and Giroud's fixtures are just a little too bad to be worth the investment (he's unlikely to get anything at Chelsea away) and MCI GW 32 is the nail in the coffin.

I should have stated below 9.0m, since most teams are going to have heavier midfields for this double because of the rise of Silva and Gerrard and will need to make concessions upfront.

For me its really only two options. Either Lukaku og Dzeko. Personally im going with Lukaku, since he is guaranteed to start.

Dzeko might get benched with Jovetic and Negredo pushing, and when Aguero is back.

I wouldnt even consider any of the other players you suggested.

Of course motivation is important in the closing season. But Everton still (thinks) that they have something to play for.

Im not sure, but i think Carroll has 1 pl goal this season? So he is the first person i would overlook. Both Jelavic and Carroll plays for weaker teams, score less goals and play fewer matches than both Everton and City.

Everton also has a very easy schedule ahead.

I might be wrong, but ill keep overlooking them given my argument. However choosing between Dzeko and Lukaku is very hard imo.

I agree Camzy, Jelly is a great option, people overlook players from lesser teams just because they're not fashionable. Last week people were saying your a mug if you dont get Aguero etc etc, Just back from a lay off, no recent form and City not playing well but he's fashionable. Then those who get him start moaning because he pulls up. Jelly, form and fixtures are good and he is cheap.

I had Borini in UFPL and made him (c)

I like Carroll out of those tbh although Giroud is a great option as well. Yes he probably won't score at Chelsea (A) but Swansea (H) is one of those games where he could easily bag a couple. Also the City game after is at the Emirates so I think you are underestimating Arsenal a little bit in that sense.
Assuming Aguero is back for the Man Utd game, I still think Dzeko will start most likely so I'd rate them as:

      Lukaku > Carroll > Dzeko > Giroud > Jelavic

First replay mentioned Bony -- after Remy went down it was between Dzeko and Bony for me, I went Dzeko but Bony can score against anyone and is a massive differential. I would put him ahead of Lukaku and Carroll.

Look what happened last time you bought Aguero. He was a 12.0 starter on your bench and now your going to take a -4 to get him out and possibly transfer him in again for the best fantasy player in the league?? NO THANK YOU!

Thank you for the late reply.

I don't know what i was thinking with that last part. It's just that I've been holding money in the bank to fit him in for too long, so I haven't been taking advantage of having the best bank in my ML. If i sell him now, I would want to use the funds elsewhere.

I guess I should just keep, seeing that I already used my FT and still have him.
Bottom line is; I'm screwing things up atm :/

Yeah I feel you! I made the same transfer. Been holding 5.0 itb for 4ish weeks to finally get him in and now this. Don't know when/if he will be back this season. I put the funds into Stevie and Silva for the dgw and I'm happy with that. Just count your losses with that transfer and put the funds to good use.

Yeah I got Lukaku in for Aguero. I think he is the best replacement especially looking at his fixtures (though form could be better). Strong cases have been made for Rooney, Carroll, Jelavic, Dzeko. But I still feel Lukaku (along with Rooney) are assured the most game time plus Everton did look explosive against Cardiff. Could have been 2 or 3-0 by the end of the first half if not for Marshall being in beast mode.
