United Confirm Rooney Toe Injury

Manchester United have this evening confirmed that Wayne Rooney is carrying a toe injury, seemingly making him a major doubt for the trip to Newcastle on Saturday. After hours of rumour on Twitter, the club have posted their own tweets on the subject, quoting David Moyes who goes on to indicate that Rooney could also be a doubt for Wednesday’s Champions League second leg with Bayern.

“He’s got a terrible toe. Not only is it a problem for this game, it could be a problem for the Munich match. We need to monitor it. We’ll get him treatment all over the weekend and see if we can speed it up.”

Meanwhile, Twitter is awash with screenshots of both the Times and the Sun back pages who look set to carry the story in tomorrow morning’s editions. Earlier this evening a story, first posted at 6pm on the Manchester Evening News site, reported the injury but was hastily removed. The article has now returned following the official tweets from Old Trafford.

The Evening News article includes further quotes from the United boss…

“There is not an awful lot you can do with a toe injury. Sometimes you can feel better quite quickly with them and sometimes you need an injection to play with it if it is bruising. With a lot of toe injuries you have to make sure there isn’t a hairline fracture or crack in your toe. We will have all that checked.”

Given the statements from Moyes and the importance of Wednesday’s second leg in Germany, the chances of Rooney taking to the field at St James’ Park look remote to say the least. The United boss appears to indicate that the striker will undergo treatment for the injury in a bid to have him available for the Bayern tie. The injury may not be severe. It could, of course, be a smokescreen to protect Rooney in preparation for the midweek tie but, regardless, this will likely see Danny Welbeck or even Javier Hernandez lead the line in the North East.

Rooney was included in our Scout Picks earlier today and has been bought by over 25,000 Fantasy Premier League managers so far this Gameweek. However, with a blank to follow in Gameweek 34, he’s now set to suffer significant sales.

Reluctantly, we’ve made the decision to edit the Scout Picks graphic following this news for fear of misleading visitors who may not have digested this news. We have left the original copy on the Scout Picks article intact, however.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Without a link to your team I don't understand the question?

What 'other' players are you fielding that Dzeko or Hazard will be benched this week when they're at home to SOT & STK respectively?

A goal and two assists in the reverse fixture, eh? I overlooked that, I admit. Still, West Ham are a tough nut to crack at home and Stoke are just the sort of team Hazard could run riot against at home - I'd have been wary of that reverse fixture too, though.

im playing both baines and coleman while benching ward and chester.........seems like most on here would bench one eve defender to spread risk.....but both carry too much goal and assit potential and arsenal missing half their best players so 50/50 chance of cleanie imo.......stupid decision?

It's not like Man U has any hopes of top 4 in the league anyways. Certainly the CL tie is much, much more important at the present. Only problem is, there are no real standouts to replace him with. I was planning on picking up Lukaku for the DGW, so maybe I'll do that one week early.

Too many people suffering from Fancy Play Syndrome aka. FPS.

It ain't hard folks... Start your best XI unless you have a compelling reason not to.

You only remember that 'one time' a bench player went off for a hattrick bc it that's it; it only happened 'one time'...

Every other time your 4th defender gave up 3 goals and finished as a 1pt hero.

        Point taken.

Although, I'm still seeing stuff like should I start 'so & so' over Baines?

        Daft.

This week for example, I know that NOR are decent at home & playing a terrible WBA side but, if we ran a Monto Carlo & played out "random NOR defender" home to WBA over Baines home to ARS I'm certain Baines comes out ahead in the long run.
It's not a clear cut choice like it is most weeks but, it's also not one to dwell on.
        Start Baines.

        No.

I was asking if I should start TWO Chelsea defenders.

Further, while I did say "start your studs" I did add the caveat "unless you have a compelling reason not to"...

        So let's break it down:

        1. Azpilicueta hardly qualifies as a stud

        2. NOR are top 5 in goals against at home this year & playing a terrible WBA team

        3. AVL are at home facing the third worst offensive side in the league

Morning lads. Please help me overcome a few selection dilemmas. Pick THREE to play out of:

    Coleman (ARS)
    Chester (SWA)
    Noone (CRY)
    Lallana (MCI)

Note: I'm playing Demichelis vs SOT to put a possible Lallana pick into perspective

Starts with a body on the bridge connecting Sweden and Denmark and it lies half in each country. They soon realize it's actually two half bodies. The top half a prominent Swedish Polly and the legs of a long missing prostitute that nobody cares about. The killer is now leaving messages for the police about the double standards applied by law depending if you're rich or poor. There's something about the homeless going on. Dunno where it's going but I'm hooked

Defence could be a big issue in the season run-in from DGW34-38.

Frustratingly, all but one of the four teams that have DGW34, have poor following fixtures that dissuade investment in their defence. So you can't kill two birds with one stone by getting in a DGW defender and riding their nice fixtures afterwards. The only team with good fixtures is City, and you might not even be able to own one of their defenders as that would throw away a City attacking spot. Sunderland have four horrible fixtures (EVE mci che mun) and only three good ones, plus their defence sucks. Palace have eve MCI LIV and even of their three easier fixtures, only one is at home, which is where they pick up most of their clean sheets. Everton's nice DGW34 is followed by MUN sot MCI hul, which makes it extra awkward to get Baines for the DGW.

So having accepted you can't rely on getting a DGW defender unless you're willing to throw away a City attacking spot, we're left with only two solid options.

Arsenal have a tremendous run of WHM hul NEW WBA nor and they are notorious for closing out games in the run-in as they seek to cement 4th place. Their possession-based defence is much more reliable against these limited teams than against the best attacks.
Then we have Chelsea, whose only difficult game is liv. Most people own a Chelsea defender, as they're a notoriously miserable defence under Mourinho, so the question would be whether to double up on them. Clearly given recent events this may not be the most popular option.

This leaves us with several teams with good matchups on paper, that are not so dependable for cleanies. Villa do have a double and actually have produced a decent number of clean sheets this season. It's also worth noting that they have registered more clean sheets away (5) than at home (3) so their away games at cpl, swa and tot may not be write-off. Spurs have great fixtures, but their defence has gone to pot under Sherwood. Stoke have changed mentality since Pulis' departure and keep significantly fewer clean sheets, consistently conceding 1 or 2. Southampton were in excellent defensive form earlier in the season, but have fallen off and have little to play for now, conceding ridiculous numbers of goals by their high standards in the last few games. Their fixtures do look good, but it's easy to see them conceding at least a single goal in many of the easy fixtures. Swansea have been a mess at the back this season. Fulham are write-offs.

So I'd be looking at Arsenal and Chelsea defenders for the run-in, with maybe a punt on Villa, or if they show signs of tightening up to their former selves, Southampton. City are the elephant in the room you can accommodate if you sacrifice a precious City attacking spot.

Yeah true, they were quite far down my list because the GW34 blank and eve after that, but GW36 and DGW37 look very good (not fancying playing at Southampton on final day).

The United defence is kind of dead to me after my experiences with Evans - even when he played they seemed unable to keep a CS - but I suppose they have kept a fair number of clean sheets recently against poor teams.

Yeah I to felt the brunt of that but they seemed to have picked up a bit. Only problem now is with Jones Vidic Ferdinand and Smalling and Evans coming back, who will play?

For me I'll be ditching Baines and Coleman so likely Baines to Sagna and Coleman to Jones later.

Yeah and that's another reason why the United defence is problematic, you can't even count on getting access to it. I really don't know which will play - they haven't settled on a CB partnership this season and I think that's partly why they've been unreliable.

I do agree Jones is one of the most likely for gametime as United have been OK when he's at CB and he can deputize at RB and CM.

It really does look to me like you have to splash the cash on Evra to get a nailed on United defender (and the odd assist), hoping he's worth the cash over the long run as each clean sheet disappears...

Yes... and don't forget even non-Evra owners aren't safe from Buttner 😆

Distinct memories of owning Evans as Evra subbed off with the clean sheet late in the Fulham, Buttner came on, then ruined the clean sheet by playing his man onside 😆

Of those two yeah United are borderline for me - counting from GW35 to the end of the season, the fixtures look decent but not wonderful to me. And I don't really trust their defence. But they have been getting the CS recently against small teams.

I hate to keep banging the same drum, but I genuinely think Crystal Palace are the answer. Good fixtures in DGW34 & 35, easing the transition time to new defenders if needed, or then just play the ones you had benched for Palace defs. It'll require a double or triple up but that's not such a bad thing when they come so cheap and their team is set up to defend.

In short ,Speroni the best budget keeper to have GW 33-35.

Yeah you're right as a transition from here to GW36 as opposed to a fire and forget solution to take you to the end of the season. I've brought Speroni in so I am doubling with Ward and Speroni as things stand. By the time MCI LIV roll around it might be time to shift one.

Ha, looking at my notes - they are copious - I see that I have no plans to shift 'em out either. I suppose one being a 'keeper, I can just bench the three and play three other defenders and back up 'keeper as required. No point selling if you can avoid it I suppose as there aren't really any cheaper options as bench fodder.

I suppose I could leave those two in my team til the end of the season - three (two defenders) would be pushing it as I'd need the other three defenders to have decent fixtures each week otherwise I'd be missing out on points. I do think by spending a little more you can pick up a couple more crucial cleanies.

You could be right, but so far this season I've got away with fielding a very cheap defence. The biggest hole in my logic is going without Everton defenders for the double. I mean I could still get them in if I wanted but I really do want Aguero and SaS, as well as a nice compliment of big mids. More than anything, a cheap defence allows for a glorious front seven.

Yeah I've gone very cheap for most of the season - I actually avoided Arsenal defence for most of it despite them looking almost essential at points. I'm not suggesting to spend more in defence as a law of FPL, but at this moment with the big defences having good run-ins it looks like a good time to do it.

Of course if it becomes necessary to own more than 2 big mids, or Aguero becomes essential to own, this might break down.

I haven't owned Baines yet this season either as far as I remember, borderline for value imo.

I really dont think they're fixtures are good at all. Okay Benteke out makes the Villa game a bit better and theyve shown decent clout in holding Chelsea, but doubling or tripling up on them is mad considering theyve got city and Liverpool after GW35

It's a good read, but stating anyone has a good fixture is actually a minefield of contention in the run in. Clubs down the bottom fighting tooth and nail to survive quite often upset what looks good on paper.

Maybe teams who have nothing to play for in mid table obscurity are the weak fixtures.

Agreed. Never know whats gonna happen. But Arsenal and CHelsea with a good run of fixtures. YOu'd expect them not to slip up that much

Yeah this has been on my mind quite a lot recently, a lot of mid table teams like Newcastle, Southampton, Hull and West Ham have switched off with little to play for.

Looking at whom some of the best defences play:

Arsenal play WHM hul NEW WBA* nor* with only the latter two teams having something to play for, though both could already be in trouble by those games imo.

Chelsea play swa SUN* liv NOR* car* so all in all that looks like a trickier schedule, with some seriously motivated opponents.

City play liv/SUN* WBA* cpl* eve/AVL* WHM so again their opponents could go down fighting.

I guess Hernendez will because of CL match coming up. Welback is doing well this season compared to Hernendez so Welback might be rested knowing that Rooney is doubt of Bayern trip

Not sure what to advise with that. It's a pretty tricky gameweek and such. Hard to say there is definitely something that stands out with your team. Maybe get rid of Noone, but with his low value, there really isn't a grand replacement with the leftover cash. Maybe get rid of Dann for someone? Upgrade a keeper, perhaps, as I don't think either will keep a cleanie.

Keep Mata, or transfer out for Yaya? I'll certainly be doing that next weekend but should I do it early? Can't decide if the Rooney injury is a good or bad thing for Mata.
