World Cup 2014 – Scout Notes – Matchday 5, Day 2

Gonzalo Higuain finally opens his World Cup 2014 account as Argentina squeeze past Belgium into the semi-finals. Tim Krul’s spot-kick exploits help Holland get the better of Costa Rica, after both sides failed to find the net over 120 minutes:

Higuain Sends Argentina into Last Four
The Napoli man picked a fine time to grab his first goal of the World Cup and fire the South Americans into the semi-finals at Belgium’s expense last night. Higuain’s opportunistic strike proved the difference in a poor game which produced a mere three shots on targets between the two sides, with Alejandro Sabella’s side leading the way by two to one. Lionel Messi owners were left frustrated after the Barcelona forward missed a late chance to seal the match, though with a goal or assists in four of his five appearances, he remains one of the most potent options available for our frontlines.

In terms of personnel, Alejandro Sabella made three changes from the side that beat Switzerland last time around. At the back, Jose Basanta came in for the suspended Marco Rojo, whilst Martin Demichelis was preferred to Federico Fernandez – the changes mean only Pablo Zabaleta and Ezequiel Garay have benefitted from a run of three clean sheets in the last four fixtures. Fernando Gago dropped out for Lucas Biglio in central midfield as Sabella battened down the hatches – Argentina have yet to win a game by more than one goal but their resilience at the back has proven essential to their bid for glory.

In the FIFA McDonald’s game, three of the Argentina back-four caught the eye for recovered balls – Martin Demichelis managed 10, whilst Ezequiel Garay and Jose Basanta were next in line with seven and six respectively. Vincent Kompany led the way for Belgium with nine, followed by Axel Witsel (eight), Kevin de Bruyne and Daniel Van Buyten (both four).

Krul On Hand for Holland
Louis Van Gaal’s decision to sub on Tim Krul ahead of the penalty kick shoot-out with Costa Rica proved an inspired one as the Newcastle man saved twice to help his side advance. The Dutch went into last night’s match as strong favourites after netting 12 times in their opening four fixtures and offered plenty going forward – they managed 20 attempts over the 120 minutes, producing eight shots on target to their opponents’ one, but were unable to find a way past the inspired Keylor Navas. The Costa Rican keeper helped his side deliver a third clean sheet of the tournament, with Jorge Luis Pinto’s budget-friendly backline conceding just two goals over their five matches.

The Dutch boss made just two changes for yesterday’s game, bringing in Bruno Martins Indi and Memphis Depay in a reshuffle that allowed Daley Blind to return to left wing-back and saw Wesley Sneijder drop deeper into central midfield, with Depay alongside Robin Van Persie and Arjen Robben in an attack-minded 3-4-3 formation. Frustratingly for Fantasy managers, we now only have premium-priced options to choose from at the back but with three assists and two clean sheets in his five appearances, Blind remains the standout option amongst Van Gaal’s defenders, with yesterday’s move to the flank encouraging news for his Fantasy owners.

In the FIFA McDonald’s game, Ron Vlaar and Stefan de Vrij led the way for recovered balls amongst the Dutch with nine apiece, while Bruno Martins Indi (seven) was next in line for the victors. For Costa Rica, Giancarlo Gonzalez was top with 10, followed by Cristian Gamboa (six) and Celsa Borges (five).

If Sanchez move is done and all fit, how will Arsenal attack line up?
    ----Arteta-Ramsey
    Walcott-Ozil-Sanchez
    --------Giroud
Or something else? Will Sanchez signing and Walcott return boost Ozil's potential?

Giroud fluffs big chances in the really big games, lots of examples last year but Chelsea and Everton at home spring to mind where he had two very presentable chances in both games. At the very highest level you need to take those.

I think we should sign Remy, but if we did Giroud should still start. Giroud isnt the best finisher, but he has numerous other qualities that people refuse to accept. We either needed a new striker because we lacked pace to suit Giroud, or somebody that works with Giroud. Sanchez and Walcott running beyond Giroud would really show what Giroud can do.

The thing I give him credit for is his movement which is great but aside from that I'm not impressed. I still stand by my claim that they will not win aPL or CL if he's their lead striker, doesn't mean he's crap but it depends on expectations.

He wins over 50% of headed duels (with Sagna gone he is our only player to aim at from goal kicks now), holds the ball up well, and is fantastic at interplay. He suffered massively with Theo and Ramsey injured, and he did remarkebly well considering how hard he worked with no rest.

true you have to. I think lallana is good signing just way over-priced. Origi is good but strange decision to loan him back. Markovic not seen enough to comment but if it stops players from sterling starting week in and week out then maybe a bad move.

I'm very happy with Lallana signing. If he was Spanish, I think everyone would be raving about him.

Origi I think is a low risk gamble with potential high returns. Could turn into a Lukaku/Benteke

I was impressed by Markovic in the Europa League, particularly against Juventus in the Semis, exploiting the space on the flanks with his pace. Markovic, Sterling & Sturridge will be devastating on the counter attack next season.

German press conference with Hansi Flick & Bastian Schweinsteiger just now was predictably inconclusive:

    - "22 players fit and healthy" (i.e. everyone other than Mustafi whose tournament is over)

    - "We reserve the right to shape the team against Brazil in such a way that we reach the final"

    - "Lahm played in midfield before because Khedira and Schweinsteiger didn't have this rhythm."

    - "We don't pursue things stubbornly, but instead look for solutions."

    - "We are satisfied with Mesut Özil. This is the decisive point, for him as well."

My main keeper is Cillesen but I've also got Brazil's Jefferson as back up.

This way, if Krul takes Cillesen's spot, Julio Cesar gets stage-fright, Victor is not in fact Brazil's 2nd 'keeper and there is a prevailing westerly breeze...I am ready.

Was going to stick with Cillessen and 2 Algerians. But he plays on day 2 and I can't shake the thought that there's a >1% chance that Krul will start. I can't call Argentina v Holland, but with Neymar out believe Germany will win. So Neuer it is! See a possible CS.

True. But I can't see Germany not putting 3 past Cesar. He'll see shots, bu he'll concede as well. Would go Dutch keeper but not 100% sure Cillessen will start.
A good keeper will earn more points than the average good midfielder this round I think.

I actually think Cillessen is a pretty safe choice. LvG was just showing off bringing Krul in for pens, would be an odd time to change keepers for the rest of the tournament.

I'd have Neuer myself but already have 5 Germans in defence plus Muller 🙂

    Repost
I did this last summer and it went down well so I'm doing it again. It's an analysis of the points per game of the new players in the Premier League. It is for their old clubs and leagues so it has limitations but it is still helpful for you hopefully. More info is on the first sheet. I will be updating it regularly and posting the new link as more players arrive.

Congrats for the win! You absolutely butchered us. We made it easier to you by playing crappy this round, or selecting all the wrong players, but didn't really need to, seen your points. Some helluva scores there. I guess you would have won any H2H regardless of the order of matchups. Hard to guess how you made those points, maybe doubling up on Brazil and Germany CB's and Hummels(c)???

Whatever it was, hats off to you guys!

Thanx no-no and well played to Team Iran despite the loss. We have nothing but respect you and your team. It was a combination of Hummels(c), Thiago, Navas and just about every other play contributing. As said, things just clicked. Now things change again...

Thanks for kind words and good luck to you in rest of the games, not sure if you need much of it. You guys seem to have done well each round (as a team at least).

I knew I had lost my H2H on first night already. I had five Colombians, and zero Brazilians and Germans. I also went with a high number of defenders to rotate a backline of 5. It didn't work that bad, but it meant I had no elite defenders and this just happened to be the first round when it would have been better to go with just few elite defenders as Hummels, Silva and Luiz all scored.

Can't play it down to bad luck, it was a calculated risk, I was in top100 OR and tried to catch up the lead with a punty strategy that didn't really work out. I always knew there was a chance it would backfire and can't really complain when it did.

Those are the breaks and we all experience them at some time. I can't discuss our strategy at this point 😉

3 of our team played in the Beach Soccer tournament last year... we were Iranians (did we win?) so we have a special affinity with you guys.
