Dugout Discussion

World Cup 2014 – Dugout Discussion – Matchday 7, Day 1

The penultimate game of the 2014 World Cup gets underway this evening as hosts Brazil prepare to take on Holland in the third/fourth place play off. Humiliated by Germany in midweek, Phil Scolari’s side have the chance to salvage some pride in the 9pm kick-off, whilst Louis Van Gaal will be equally determined to end his stint at the Dutch helm in style before taking over at Manchester United:

Brazil: Cesar; Maicon, Silva, Luiz, Maxwell; Paulinho, Gustavo; Ramires, Oscar, Willian; Jo

Holland: Cillessen; Vlaar, De Vrij, Martins Indi; Kuyt, Clasie, Wijnaldum, Blind; Sneijder; Van Persie, Robben

Scolari wields the axe on the back of Tuesday’s 7-1 drubbing, making as many as six changes to his starting line-up. In defence, Thiago Silva is free from suspension and takes the place of Dante at centre-half, whilst Maxwell replaces Marcelo at left-back. Further up the pitch, Paulinho, Ramires, Willian and Jo get a chance to impress, with Fernandinho, Bernard, Hulk and Fred all dropped after disappointing displays last time around. With Neymar sidelined through injury, David Luiz and Oscar carry the main attacking threat for the hosts – both have found the net twice so far, with the latter also delivering a pair of assists.

Somewhat surprisingly, Van Gaal resists the temptation to freshen up his side after an energy-sapping 120 minutes against Argentina on Wednesday night produced a single shot on target. The Dutch boss make just two alterations, as Jordy Clasie and Jonathan de Guzman come in for Wesley Sniejder and the injured Nigel de Jong in central midfield, whilst Arjen Robben and Robin Van Persie lead the line in a 3-4-1-2 formation once again. Neither player has scored since Matchday 2 but the duo will be looking to finish the tournament on a high against the hosts’ porous backline – bearing in mind the United man failed to register a single attempt against the South Americans, his Fantasy owners are desperate for an improvement.

    RMT (3-5-2 version 😉 )

    DDG
    Shaw, Wilson, Debuchy
    Sterling, Eriksen, Mata, Knockaert
    Rvp, Gomis

Still think I'm spending too much in defence 😕 (But how can I change it without making it crap?) Midfield looks alright. Gomis hasn't proven himself, but could be a risk worth taken.

    New thoughts? 🙂

Consistency like that isn't to be underrated, and I reckon he could really do a job at United if he came. Cheaper, much more realistic target than Hummels who has no reason to move.

Cheaper & realistic yes but not in the same league by a long way. In saying that Hummels wouldn't be the first excellant cb to fail in premiership, at least you know what your getting with Vlaar.

If you were currently top 10, would you:

    a) Change from van Persie as captain?
    b) Change 7 points to Mascherano?

Thinking that as I had quite a few Dutch lads, I need to take some risks to stay there. Would be nothing worse than not risking things and coming just outside.

Hard enough comparing midfielders, so to come up with a definitive top 20 would be so difficult. But if you're using the logic of world class meaning getting into a World XI or squad of 23, I'd obviously have many in there. CBs in the world seem to have followed the same path as England's recently, though.

Trouble with defenders, and to a greater extent, keepers, is that people remember their mistakes, not their successes. Like a striker can miss 3 chances then score and be hero. Defender can defend all day then make 1 mistake and hes rubbish

I will keep Vlaar and De Vrij and than I have to go for a 3 defenders out of this 4: Boateng, Hummels, Garay, Demi. No idea who to leave out. I have a feeling that Germans might not score, but not to sure about this 🙂

I should also change Clasie as Mascherano, Lahm and Kroos are all expected to do more than 7 right?

Also any suggestion who to put for C? I will have 3 defenders, Masch, Lahm, Kroos and Messi to play and would also need to catch some points.

yeah, another general thought is, that as UFPL is pay to play, they need to be up and running soon.

Anyway even previous years they opened by the 20th, it seems that opening during a wc isn't an option so my thoughts are mon-wed

I am so torn between Cillessen and Neuer right now. But mine will probably be:

      Cillessen/Neuer
Martins Indi, Blind, De Vrij, Rojo, Boateng.

I will have to keep Hummels and Howedes on the bench and that just doesn't feel right.

I want to cover both defences. But I might go Howedes with Rojo on the bench - especially if the rumors about him not starting are true. If Hummels starts though, I will probably go Hummels over Rojo.

David Luiz is not a centre-back.

He does not have the positional sense required to play in a role where discipline is so paramount. He is more braun than brain. He often goes on marauding runs upfield, only to get caught out when they lose possession.

The qualities he does possess are a great passing ability, an eye for goal from long range and strength in the tackle. If he played in central midfield, he would fair much better. He would not get caught out nearly as much positionally, would be able to break up play well with his strength, take shots on goal which we know can be lethal, and play the ball to the attackers easily. If he plays along side other disciplined players he can flourish.

Another aspect about Luiz is his passion for the game. He is a funny guy, and so naturally will be well-liked by his teammates, but his heart on sleeve approach means he can also be serious and galvanise players on the pitch. This is an underrated part of football, but team spirit and motivation is huge. Luiz can help these things, yet his emotional transparency often leads to him being ridiculed and being a perfect scapegoat.

David Luiz is a good player, but he is misunderstood. He is by no means worth 50 million, but with proper management he can be a very solid player.

Nice post. I agree more or less..
The sight of him waddling back in background from midfield while his team were being destroyed (3rd or 4 the german goal) will stay with me. Still think hes a good player mind.
