World Cup 2014 – Dugout Discussion – Matchday 7, Day 1

The penultimate game of the 2014 World Cup gets underway this evening as hosts Brazil prepare to take on Holland in the third/fourth place play off. Humiliated by Germany in midweek, Phil Scolari’s side have the chance to salvage some pride in the 9pm kick-off, whilst Louis Van Gaal will be equally determined to end his stint at the Dutch helm in style before taking over at Manchester United:

Brazil: Cesar; Maicon, Silva, Luiz, Maxwell; Paulinho, Gustavo; Ramires, Oscar, Willian; Jo

Holland: Cillessen; Vlaar, De Vrij, Martins Indi; Kuyt, Clasie, Wijnaldum, Blind; Sneijder; Van Persie, Robben

Scolari wields the axe on the back of Tuesday’s 7-1 drubbing, making as many as six changes to his starting line-up. In defence, Thiago Silva is free from suspension and takes the place of Dante at centre-half, whilst Maxwell replaces Marcelo at left-back. Further up the pitch, Paulinho, Ramires, Willian and Jo get a chance to impress, with Fernandinho, Bernard, Hulk and Fred all dropped after disappointing displays last time around. With Neymar sidelined through injury, David Luiz and Oscar carry the main attacking threat for the hosts – both have found the net twice so far, with the latter also delivering a pair of assists.

Somewhat surprisingly, Van Gaal resists the temptation to freshen up his side after an energy-sapping 120 minutes against Argentina on Wednesday night produced a single shot on target. The Dutch boss make just two alterations, as Jordy Clasie and Jonathan de Guzman come in for Wesley Sniejder and the injured Nigel de Jong in central midfield, whilst Arjen Robben and Robin Van Persie lead the line in a 3-4-1-2 formation once again. Neither player has scored since Matchday 2 but the duo will be looking to finish the tournament on a high against the hosts’ porous backline – bearing in mind the United man failed to register a single attempt against the South Americans, his Fantasy owners are desperate for an improvement.

Despite Uniteds great early fixtures I'm not sure about RVP.

Why?

* Rest after the World Cup?
* Apart from game v Spain he's looked a bit flat
* Poor last season form
* I also think he's lost a few yards of pace.
* He's bound to be REALLY expensive....

  If he's starting and playing solely up top, then a must have in my opinion. He can finish from anywhere. He does look a little unfit and a little nervy at the minute, but I can see him being the main source of goals at United. He'll be the focus of Van Gaals team.

    Certainly beats last off-season where we sat twiddling our fingers whilst FPL had website issues that meant they resorted to releasing the odd player price in advance in order to quell the backlash!

Germany were also back on the training pitch at their secluded base camp in Santo Andre after taking Wednesday off following their 7-1 thrashing of host-nation Brazil on Tuesday.

Defender Mats Hummels was cleared to rejoin his team mates after undergoing treatment for a knee injury that prompted him to miss the second half of the semi.

With the team only having a gentle run-out, Germany`s assistant coach Hansi Flick said Hummels was free to do what he wanted.

"All the players will be able to train, whether it`s on an exercise bike or on the pitch - whichever they prefer," Flick said. "It`s up to each individual to decide what they want to do in training."

Does anyone want to talk about their wildcard strategy?

I can't decide whether to:

(a) build a team for the first three weeks, before deploying my wildcard between weeks three and four (maximising player price changes and then building a team that's a bit more balanced until the next wildcard).
(b) take a longer term view, layered with some initial price change chasing - but saving the wildcard for a DGW/total injury wipeout.

Thoughts?

  If you have a good team/score after GW3, a couple of hits does the job of a WC.
  Wish they would scrap the Jan WC even though it really saved my season with 4 sub 30K GW ranks in a row.

    That's amazing, I have only done it for two seasons - best rank is 44K.
