Scout Report – Diego Costa

After acquiring Cesc Fabregas from Barcelona, Chelsea returned to the Spanish top-flight to finally complete their summer-long chase for Diego Costa last week. The 25-year-old arrives at Stamford Bridge on a five-year-deal for a fee believed to be in the region of £32m, after Jose Mourinho’s side triggered the release clause in the Spanish international’s Atletico Madrid contract:

Discussing the move with the Blues’ official website, Costa was quick to praise his former side after a sensational season under Diego Simeone’s guidance last time around:

“I am very happy to sign for Chelsea. Everybody knows it is a big club in a very competitive league, and I am very excited to get started in England with a fantastic coach and team-mates. Having played against Chelsea last season I know the high quality of the squad I am joining. I would like to thank everybody at Atletico who made me into the player I am, it was an incredible time for me, but now I am starting a new adventure and I hope to win many trophies with Chelsea.”

The History

It’s fair to say Costa’s career was slow in getting off the ground. The forward was limited to street football in his native Brazil until the age of 16, when he was snapped up Barcelona Esportivo Capela, before signing his first professional contract with Portuguese outfit SC Braga in the summer of 2006.

Quickly loaned out to FC Panafiel Portugal’s second division, Costa grabbed five goals and an assist in 13 appearances before Atletico Madrid signed him up just a few months later. The Spanish outfit remained unconvinced over his abilities and, over the next couple of years, loaned him back to former club Braga (a goal and assist in nine matches) and, subsequently, Spanish Second Division sides Celta Vigo (30 appearances, six goals) and Albacete (35 appearances, nine goals) before selling him to Real Valladolid in 2009, albeit with a buy-back clause inserted in his contract.

While Costa’s nine goals and six assists were unable to prevent his new club from relegation, Atletico took note of his impact for the La Liga strugglers and immediately re-acquired his services for the following season. Starting 2010/11 as a squad member, Costa forced his way into the first-team by the end of the campaign and managed six goals and four assists from 28 appearances before injury curtailed his game time the following year.

Having recovered from a knee complaint, the frontman was loaned out to Rayo Vallecano in the latter half of 2011/12 in order to boost his fitness and served up 10 goals and four assists in just 16 league matches. Back at Atletico the following season, he finally flourished under the guidance of Diego Simeone – 10 goals and 12 assists in 2012/13 preceded 27 strikes and five assists last term as he led his club to their first Spanish title in 18 years, whilst eight goals and a pair of assists in nine Champions League matches helped Atletico to the final, where they were beaten by neighbours Real Madrid.

On the international stage, Costa has been a controversial figure. Having been fielded in a couple of friendlies by Brazil, he chose to turn out for Spanish after being granted Spanish nationality – he’s since played six times and failed to score.

The Prospects

Physically imposing and willing to scrap for every ball up top, Costa looks the ideal forward for Mourinho’s style of play. The 25-year-old is renowned for a somewhat impetuous streak and isn’t afraid to put himself about in the final third – as evidenced by 19 yellow cards in his last two league seasons with Atletico.

Despite splashing significant amounts of cash on forwards over the last few years, the London club have never quite managed to replace the barnstorming displays of Didier Drogba. Similar to the Ivorian, Costa was a relatively late starter in professional football and certainly seems to have the same street-fighter attitude as Drogba, who wreaked havoc on top-flight backlines for a number of seasons. As the new boy admits:

“Boys who grew up playing in academies are taught to control themselves and respect others but no one ever told me otherwise. I didn’t have a school to teach me this. I was used to seeing players elbowing each other in the face and I thought it was the norm.”

Clearly, the Blues boss needs to improve upon last season’s attacking displays. Chelsea finished just four points off the top of the Premier League in The Special One’s first year back at The Bridge despite scoring just 71 times – 30 less than Liverpool and 31 fewer than champions Man City – and it’s arguable that the lack of a world-class frontman was the difference between success and failure.

Although Mourinho wasted little time in instilling a real resilience at the back, with 18 clean sheets delivered and only 27 goals conceded, in the final third, it was a different matter altogether. Whilst Eden Hazard can be exempt of any criticism after serving up 14 strikes from the flank, the Chelsea forwards failed to offer Mourinho a solution- Samuel Eto’o was the most prolific centre-forward with nine goals, as Fernando Torres and Demba Ba chipped in with five apiece.

Already, both Ba and Eto’o have moved on as Mourinho restructures his options. Although the Blues boss has insisted his summer spending is already over, reports suggest that Chelsea are in talks to bring Drogba back as a player-coach – a scenario which could see Romelu Lukaku farmed out on loan once more, with Torres utilised as back-up once again.

Despite just one outstanding season for Atletico, Costa has been handed a premium price tag right across the Fantasy games. Coming in at 10.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 9.5 in Sky Sports, he certainly offers a security of starts and will strengthen the Blues’ close-range potential – all but one of his 27 goals for Atletico last term were scored from inside the area.

Whilst his arrival will undoubtedly bring plenty of investment the Brazilian’s way, there’s a belief that Costa’s work-rate and hold-up play, whether in a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 could, in turn, strengthen the Blues’ midfielders points potential. One look at Drogba’s record under Mourinho shows the Ivorian was never too prolific – notching 10 and 12 times in his first couple of campaigns under Jose, Drogba served up 20 goals in 2006/07 in the pair’s final year together in London.

Furthermore, with Frank Lampard now departed, there are question marks as to whether Costa can oust Hazard from the role as number one spot-kick taker; indeed, this could be a potentially decisive factor for many, given that the Belgian is cheaper at 10.0 in FPL. With an opening trip to Burnley preceding home clashes with Leicester, Swansea and Villa in the first six Gameweeks, Costa certainly has the schedule on his side as he looks to hit the ground running. However, it remains to be seen whether he can replace Hazard in our Fantasy affections or even offer a double-up option as Mourinho looks to bring the title back to Stamford Bridge.

      Rose = Rotation
Wisdom = Will he play at all?

I would downgrade one of the three big midfielders, and invest in defence.

DZers, haven't been able to pull myself away from an Arnautovic/Shelvey rotation in midfield...
Is anyone else looking at this? Is it too tough to pick each week and thus leaving points on the bench? First 6 games look solid with this rotation. Any thoughts appreciated

I had that exact set up for a few days there, but then I remember that rotations rarely ever work, and switched Shelvey to a 4.5m... the extra million came in handy...

Bar GW3, I'm happy to play Arnie every week for the first twelve GWs, providing he does well...

I know it would be tough to pick who to play but I'd love to be in that position IF it did pull of and Shelvey and Arny were both scoring well... too much dreaming you feel?

i'm not a fan of offensive rotations tbh. harder to predict when attackers will score than it is to predict when defenders will keep a cs

just think of wickham's points against city and chelsea towards the end of last season as an example of this

*Giroud to Dzeko (double arsenal attack overkill with those fixtures)
      *Mata to Eriksen
*Upson to Chambers for the Stoke/Southampton rotation
      *Elliot to Mannone/Foster for rotation

Do you base your defender choices on fixtures or value?

So far i only have Debuchy and Davies selected in my defence
Simply because they are both much better value at their new clubs. Not even bothered looking at their fixtures or whether they rotate.

Way i look at it is fixtures change, and rotation pairs usually end up being scuppered by injuries.
I dont want to be wasting resources making defender transfers, so the five i buy are likely to be there till the wildcard.
Value for money is paramount , want access to good teams defences at a budget price. Just need one more lower priiced defender to upgrade clubs and will be set with three decent backliners

Depends. Debuchy plays for Arsenal who should be confident of a cleanie against most teams so I would consider him value and no reason to pay too much attention to fixtures. Same if Verm/Vlaar move to United.

Weaker clubs the defenders are all pretty much the same 4.5 and none too confident of picking up a cleanie so it's all about the fixtures.

The mid range is where to kinda have to consider both. A strong defensive team like Palace would be good, but also depends on who they are playing.

The criteria most use to select players is choosing a good team for the season (or for the next few weeks). However, this is the wrong approach as you (and more importantly, everyone else) will cruelly be judging your players performance based upon their scores to date. The standard deviation of such a small sample is going to be heavily biased and not at all reflective of season performance, so you really have no option but to take a hatchett to your team if you want to build team value, which is so important in the 2nd half of the season. The most important criteria you should be focusing on right now is 'how can i maximise my team value over the first 10 weeks of the season'.

Therefore, with the initial team selection, dont worry about who will score more over the season x or y, or formations: Some people opt for 4 at the back, some like to go big in midfield or upfront, all is a matter of personal preference. When it comes to team selection there is no right or wrong (except in hindsight), and there are so many permutations, all equally valid, to skin the cat so to speak. Ultimately it doesnt really matter, whats more important is a flexible structure to maximise the team value.

By structure i mean ensure you have the capability to jump on any bandwagon without taking too many hits: e.g. 3x8.5m strikers is not a sensible strategy; nor is any unbalanced team which is too big in anyone area (its easier to switch a mid for a mid, rather than having to sell a mid, to buy a defender for example). Therefore having at least one premium player in each bracket makes it easier to jump on bandwagons as they come available.

No it's not, the most important criteria is getting points each week. Without points, we can't win.

This. If I pick the best team at the start, I don't need to think about getting TV I will have it. 😉 Isn't that what we are all trying to do? Pick the team that will score the most points, which if correct will become the bandwagons.

You shouldn't ever worry about team value. If your playing the game well, then you'll end up with a good team value.

it is a marathon not a sprint, if you have a team value of 108m+ before xmas you will be a juggernaught that is impossible to stop in the 2nd half of the season

do this and you will guarantee a top 100k position every year (see my record)

i fully agree. whilst trying to maximise points you need to jump on as many bandwagons as possible to generate some team value. And its why i am a fan of playing the early wildcard to enable one to maximise points while getting on some early season bandwagons without costing transfer points.

a flexible set up with i max price def/mf/striker is a sensible approach. baines, sanchez/hazard and aguero/rvp/rooney... with coverage in lots of price brackets.

this is exactly the point... going for points is a lottery given such a small sample space. which is why even the most well thought out teams you see people cursing their selections by the end of wk1.

whereas going for team value is a guaranteed win that will bear fruits later on.

Hes going to need to equal last terms efforts to justify hi price. Hard to keep that free kick conversion rate up. He was also very lucky on penalties. It seemed like every time Aguero left the field city were awarded a penalty.
Unlikely to see so many this season.
Clearly he will do well, but enough to justify his price?

you've ignored fixtures a bit too much for my liking and I don't like Vlaar (unless he moves of course)...I love the pricing structure of your strikers...very flexible for the future...I'd get a cheaper keeper or keeper combo and improve those dodgy cheap defenders

personally I'd start with a more expensive and better established player than De Jong...then you can switch to De Jong/Tadic if they look good

de Gea should be in no teams

There will be utd defenders at a cheaper price, and he will see less save points than some cheaper alternatives

Haha i never stat the season with a keeper more than 4.5
Last season i reluctantly bought in mingolet with first wildcard, and instant,y regretted it, not making that mostake again

So what do you think is the best GK rotation pair?
        Mannone-Krul or others?

Just go with your gut. Both great choices on paper. If you plan to WC early in the season def DDG+4mil to take advantage of the nice fixts!

    RMT

OK guys just done my daily tinkering and I'm feeling good about this one.

    Speroni - Adrian
Azpillicueta (Luis if 6m hopefully) Shackeckell/Davies (rotation) Coloccini/O'shea (rotation)
Silva - Fabregas - Barkley - Eriksen - De Jong
    Rooney - Borini - Giroud

343 or 352 rotating Borini an De Jong

it's an interesting team but I've got some thoughts for you to chew on:

that defensive structure £££/(£-£)/(£-£) looks great if everybody is fit but as soon as you get an injury it falls to pieces as you are always playing a cheap defender with a dodgy fixture...the standard £££/£££/(£-£-£) is much better...get 3 defenders who never have more than one tough fixture at the same time...then you always have a 4th defender with an OK fixture who can cover for anybody in your team...and that's an important point...that defender is a reserve for everybody in your team

I don't like teams without a dirt-cheap attacking player to bench...you don't want a player like De Jong on the bench...much too expensive...your costing yourself a premium player

your keepers are good but too expensive...you could have Courtois for the same money...(but I'm not suggesting that)

It's been awesome. Can't remember the last time there was so much hype and activity over the transfer market. Can't wait for this season

If it carries on as it is teams are going to be damn near unrecognisable from last season. City being ominously quiet I notice though....

Not so much big bucks for them or compared to other deals, but yeah they did. Still unlike them not to make some marquee signing

Yeah...quiet by their standards. I like Pell as a manager...very level headed and calm...

All good for the FPL game. Half our picks will be successes and half will flop...but which ones ? Of course the best, safest but dullest option will be tried and tested....BUT NOT FOR ME....
