Moving Target – Mathieu Debuchy

After opening their summer spending spree with the acquisition of Alexis Sanchez, Arsenal continued to strengthen for the season ahead by snapping up Mathieu Debuchy from Newcastle. The right-back arrives on a long-term deal and hands the Gunners a replacement for Bacary Sagna, who left for champions Manchester City under freedom of contract:

Discussing the move with the club’s official website, Arsene Wenger
revealed that the Frenchman was his main target to take over from the departed Sagna and underlined the new boy’s attacking potential as key:

“We are delighted to welcome Mathieu Debuchy to Arsenal Football Club. He has shown he can perform at the highest level with his club sides and also for France. He is a quality defender who has good Premier League experience and I’m confident he will fit in very well with us. The obvious replacement for Sagna was Debuchy. He knows what to expect and that’s of course a huge advantage. Debuchy is very good going forward, is very quick in transition. He is sharp in his marking, good with interceptions and quick to go from defence to attack. You feel he always has the desire to go forward, so I believe he will be perfectly suited to our style in that aspect.”

The History

A product of the Lille youth academy in his native France, the 28-year-old made his debut back in the 2003/04 season. Over the course of a decade, Debuchy cemented his spot as a regular at right-back and played a total of 289 times across all competitions, with his threat down the flank serving up 18 goals and 16 assists. A habit for incurring the referee’s wrath was obvious back in Ligue 1, though; Debuchy receiving 57 yellow cards and was dismissed on five occasions before making his way to Newcastle in January 2013.

The Frenchman made 14 league appearances for the Magpies in his debut campaign but failed to deliver any attacking returns for Alan Pardew’s side. Last term, though, he stepped up in the final third and managed a goal and four assists in 29 league games – again, though, his disciplinary record was a cause for concern, with 12 yellows and a couple of dismissals in 46 matches across all competitions for the Tyneside team.

On the international stage, Debuchy has scored twice in 25 appearances for France and, as evidenced by the recent World Cup, has edged past Sagna as Didier Deschamps’ first-choice right-back.

The Prospects

The reported £12m deal certainly bodes well for Debuchy’s Fantasy prospects for the season ahead. A look at the statistics shows that Wenger rarely rotated at right-back and centre-half – Sagna, Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker appeared in the first XI on 32+ occasions – compared to the uncertainty on the left which saw Kieran Gibbs and Nacho Monreal handed 24 and 13 starts respectively.

After serving up 17 clean sheets in 2013/14 (11 at home and six on the road), Wenger’s backline was second only to Chelsea (18) for shut-outs, conceding a mere 11 times in front of their own fans. Granted, their form on the road against title contenders (leaking 17 goals on their travels to Chelsea, Liverpool and City) may persuade us to bench their main assets for tougher trips but, having started the Fantasy games as a Newcastle player, Debuchy’s kinder price tag strengthens his appeal.

Coming in at 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 6.1 in the Sky Sports game, the right-back is 0.5 cheaper than Mertesacker and Koscielny in the former game – persuading many to snap him up in the hope that Wenger’s side can replicate last year’s resilience.

It’s not just defensive potential that brings Debuchy onto our radars, though. In the season gone by, the Frenchman was third for shots (35) and attempts on target (12) amongst defenders despite starting only 28 matches, whilst a comparison with Sagna also reflects his promise; Debuchy produced an attempt on goal every 74.7 minutes to Sagna’s 201.3, whilst he was also quicker for creating chances by 113.6 minutes to 153.4.

Whilst showdowns against Everton, City, Spurs and Chelsea in the first seven Gameweeks hand Wenger’s side a mixed opening schedule, Debuchy’s points potential at both ends of the pitch could offset any lack of defensive returns and persuade many that he’s worth the early investment.

Wow! Was contemplating having Darren Bent as a cheap 3rd striker to free up funds elsewhere.

Just watched the highlights from the earlier game and he looks twice the size of any of the other players! Proper porker!

He was clearly having trouble 'running' as well. May have to rethink this one!

Not sure on LUIS - Chelsea full backs are hard to call atm - id start off with Cahill and then maybe switch to Luis if he makes lb his own...

Also think REMY isn't guaranteed to start - think he's going to rotate both with studge/lambert upfront and behind fwds with sterling/markovic/lallana...

Other than that it looks good!

Thanks! I was thinking Remy would be partnering Sturridge up front with Lambo coming in regularly as an impact sub. But as you pointed out, I might be misinformed and have to see how the pre-season matches will turn out.

Thought of hangin onto Luis as I don't see any other Chelsea defender taking his spot in the left. This is another one that I'll have to keep an eye out.

Leading on from a question on previous page, nailed on striker in my team = RVP

I want to support him with two 8.5m from Bony, Giroud & Dzeko.

BUT, i also have sanchez and nasri in my team.

Do i double up on Arsenal (a wee bit punty with sanchez bearing in mind his price tag) or with CIty, who have a tricky opening few weeks?

    Thanks in advance.

I'd do Jones - Vermaelen (assuming Verm joins), then you can upgrade Bent to a 6.0 such as Jelavic/Austin. Might also swap Cameron to Collocini or Vlaar, especially as Cameron doesn't look nailed and Vlaar looks like he may well be joining Southampton.

As reported by Ruhr Nachrichten, Dortmund boss Jurgen Klopp said that both Hummels and Marco Reus are staying put at the Westfalenstadion – for the time being at least. Speaking during a special broadcast of ‘Black and Yellow talk’,

Klopp commented: “I can assure everyone that there is no evidence that the two want to leave. Marco and Mats will play for us next season. What was said today? Mats to Man United? For how much? €20m? Such numbers you can forget.”

Then of course Reus has become phenomenal. Not sure how they're close to falling apart tbh...

met a guy travelling who at the start of each night used to state what condition he was in (referring to the old PES condition arrows in team selection). he'd say, "i'm on a red tonight" and you knew it would be a good night. problem is that would often leave him on a blue or a purple the day after

Rotation worries? Gibbs when fit was pretty much nailed.
Assists? Not gonna happen that often with Debuchy. Arsenal like to play little passes everywhere, he won't be taking part in those that often.

Don't get me wrong. I like Gibbs. But rotation whether that be due to fitness or amount of games is more likely than Debuchy.

Debuchy won't overlap like Sagna did as Sanchez cuts in? He won't press forward and be able to give those little passes into Sanchez? No crosses or pull backs?

    Shaw, Debuchy, Cameron, Mariapppa, Chambers

    Fabregas, Sanchez, Eriksen, Tadic, Albrighton

    Rooney, Pelle, Giroud

The 3 cheap defenders are subject to change depending on the prospect of their gametime. I feel like im Gambling with having both Sanchez and Fabregas, but if they wont look solid illl swap them for Hazard/Silva/Nasri/Schurle or the likes.

Giroud will be swapped once Walcott gets back and sanchez takes his FW spot. but those changes will hapen as the season goes along. are there any players that im missing that could have a steady impact? appar fromYYT whos is insanely priced.

Pelle's goalscoring record in Holland for the last two seasons is kinda scary isn't it?

It is, but almost all strikers that come over from Holland struggle for at least half a season, usually a whole one.

I know RMTs are really tedious at this stage, but I would still find your opinions helpful:

    Krul (elliot)

    Davies F.Luis Verm (Wisdom) (Bruce)

    Sanchez Mata Eriksson Hazard (Albrighton)

    Dzeko Bony Giroud

    Any thoughts?

Looks alright... Id get Rooney/RVP in there. Downgrade Mata - not guaranteed game time from what I've heard. And just see what happens with Luis in regards to how nailed on he is. And of course Verm transfer.

        Mata ---> Siggy

        Bony ---> Rooney

I just know Rooney is going to be playing second fiddle this season. I cant justify RVP with so much value out there.

i don't know this is true for sure but i suspect it to be true. puncheon got 7 goals and 18bps last season. in one game he scored a brace. therefore he may have got 3bps in every game he scored in

    Here's the deal:

    Mannone - Krul

    Ward - Wisdom - B. Davies (if Spurs) - Simpson - Debuchy

    Eriksen - Mata - Sanchez - Davis - Fabregas

    RVP - Pelle - Chamakh

Would really like to free up 1m. so I can do Cesc to Hazard... any thoughts?

Thoughts on Siggy? Are we letting his former exploits at Swansea cloud our judgement or is he a great option once again?

He's very cheap compared to the likes of De Jong or the new fellow at Southampton. But I don't have faith in Gary Monk so I will probably avoid.
