Moving Target

Moving Target – Ben Davies

Maurico Pochettino made his first foray into the transfer market as manager of Tottenham by snapping up Ben Davies and Michel Vorm from Swansea City. The former arrives at White Hart Lane for a fee reported to be in the region of £10 million as the north London outfit saw off Liverpool in the race for his signature.

Having made his debut in the midweek friendly win over Toronto, the 21-year-old left-back discussed his move with the club’s official website:

“I’m very happy to be joining a club like Spurs. It was such a good opportunity for me and there was no doubt in my mind about it. It’s a great place to be and something I jumped at the chance of being part of..I just want to play as many games as I can this season. My aim is to come in and do my best and work hard under the new gaffer.”

The History

A product of the Swansea youth system, Davies was propelled into the first-team as a 19-year-old after first-choice left-back Neil Taylor suffered a serious ankle injury at the start of the 2012/13 campaign. Despite a lack of top-level experience, Davies was afforded the chance to impress by then-manager Michael Laudrup and went on to feature 37 times in his debut Premier League season, producing a goal and two assists.

Despite Taylor’s return to full fitness last term, Davies continued as the Swans first-choice left-back under Laudrup and replacement Gary Monk. Racking up another 34 league appearances, his raids down the flank served up two goals and an assist for the Welsh outfit.

On the international stage, Davies represented Wales Under 19 side on three occasions before being handed his senior debut in October 2012. He’s since gone on to represent his country 10 times and remains ahead of former team-mate Taylor in the pecking order.

The Prospects

Pocchetino’s penchant for attacking full-backs in his preferred 4-2-3-1 system bodes well for Davies’ Fantasy potential over the season ahead. The raiding runs of Nathaniel Clyne and Luke Shaw were a feature of Southampton’s play under the Argentine last season and the new man in charge will be keen to replicate a system that helped his former side to an eighth place finish in his only full campaign at the helm.

A look at Davies’ distribution in 2013/14 underlines he was more than a little unlucky just to pick up a single assist. The left-back produced 31 key passes for the Swans last term – joint seventh amongst defenders – and created a goalscoring opportunity for team-mates every 97.6 minutes; up from 178.9 minutes in his debut campaign and illustrating his improvement in the final third.

Furthermore, Davies improved his successful dribbles from 43.2% to 51.7% in 2013/4 and also improved his shot accuracy (from 22.2% to 33.3%) and the frequency of attempts on goal (336.2 minutes per effort compared to 357.8 the season before) to further indicate the 21-year-old’s growing stature.

Bearing in mind that Pochettino led Southampton to 15 clean sheets in the previous season – seven at home and eight away, more than any teams on their travels – there’s a real belief that Spurs could offer us strong potential at the back, boosting Davies’ prospects at both ends of the pitch.

Another cause for optimism is the youngster’s price across the Fantasy games. Starting off as a Swansea player, he sets you back just 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 5.5 in the Sky Sports game; bearing in mind fellow full-back Kyle Walker and Jan Vertonghen are priced at 6.0 apiece, Davies certainly has the potential to provide us excellent value. His move also allows Taylor the chance to reclaim the Swansea left-back berth and, at 4.5 in FPL, he’s now back on some managers’ radars ahead of four decent home games in the first seven for the Swans.

The opening schedule also smiles in Davies’ favour. With Pochettino’s side set to face just three of last season’s top seven in the opening 12 Gameweeks – including home matches with QPR, West Brom, Southampton, Newcastle and Stoke – the young Welshman is handed the chance to play his way into our Fantasy plans from the outset.

I do expect us to buy a CB.

But whoever it is, Jones and him will be nailed on. Leaving Evans and Smalling to battle for the last CB position in the 3

I think even if he starts the first one or two he'll soon be dropped. He's over rated imo, and was exposed plenty last year, most notably by Eto.

I'd imagine he is a starter, yes.

Not sure how tight Utd actually will be though at the back, and like the other 5.5m's in the UTD backline, he tends to get injured.

The fixtures are there though, so worth a twirl.

Jones is nailed on, but Shaw's a much better option, playing as a LWB at 6.0.

You can get DDG for 5.5 anyway, and spend the money on a defender more likely to get you baps/goals/assists.

For just 0.5 more you could have Shaw who will be OOP. I would consider another Utd defender only if Verm goes there.

Not sure if this has been asked before as am fairly new to FFS but do people try and budget certain amounts for positions? For example no more than 10mil on Gks etc? I know this would be dependent on your favoured formation, if you prefer a 3-5-2 over the typical 3-4-3 then you will want more money spent in midfield. But interested to see if anyone does use a strategy for this, as makes more sense to invest mids and forwards over GK's DEF, which is shown in the RMT's as don't think have seen a 30mil + defence.

    My current budget is

9mil on Gks as don't think there is much more points over value to be had by spending more than this based on previous seasons.
24-25mil on Defence - Allows a premium defender, a mid priced defender and 3 cheapish rotation
38-40mil on Midfield - This year more than others think there may be more value investing a bit more in midfield than usual with some very attacking mids not over-priced as in past seasons
25-28 forwards - Few ways to go with this, either two premium and a cheap bencher or spread more evenly, which again i feel is easier to do this year, with forwards priced much more reasonable, expect a few. With good options in the 8-10.5 bracket, can get a good looking strike force without having to sacrifice in other areas.

So do other people budget for positions or just get the players they want and try and fit budget around?

It's all very similar around these parts but here goes:

    Krul // Elliot
    Debuchy / Shaw / Terry // Vlaar // Wisdom
    Eriksen / Gylfi / Hazard / Ramsey // Albrighton
    Dzeko / Giroud / Rooney

My main concern is the absence of Sturridge... Thoughts and suggestions welcome 🙂

Talking about bargains, that Valbuena to Moscow for £5.5M is cancelled. Valbuena rejected the contract offer, which would have been €10M for three seasons. Obviously the money was no issue, he just didn't want to go to play in Russia. Can't blame him.

...and this brings him back to FPL radars, sort of, because the rumours have it that QPR is interested in him.

Indeed. I was about 99% sure that he'd turn that offer down, and in case he'd accept it, about 99% sure it would end badly. He'll do better even by staying in Marseille, despite being out of favour with the new manager. He's a fighter and has been able to convince all the previous managers even if they didn't like him before they came there. Sure he can turn Bielsa's head too.

People like Sinclair and Rodwell for example who just moved for the money. It shows they have no desire to play football as they are never going to break through they just get blinded by the money. It's annoying how these days football is all about money not about the history of the club etc because it ends up ruining players.

And half the guys who go to Russia, Ukraine, wherever, who may continue to play football, yes, but also end up losing their places in their respective NT's. I think this weighs much for Valbuena. He's a key player for France, but would he be if he played in Moscow. Particularly if it went badly? I think he would be dropped fast.

Another thing that might weigh is that neither the living nor the league is quite like in Spain or in French Riviera. No offence to Russia or Russians, but if the player wishes to get to play in La Liga, playing away matches in Siberia and Dagestan may not quite fill the bill.

You'd imagine, but that's the one that I've read about. His priority seems to be in move to Spain. So if Sevilla's interest turns into a bid that Marseille can accept, which appears to be not much, I'd imagine that even if QPR offered twice the salary that Sevilla can, they can say goodbye to him. And the French press has it that QPR is offering a wage lower than Valbuena gets in Marseille.

But as there appears to be no other offers for him at the moment, this might be the right moment for QPR to do some excellent business. 😉

I think with Ozil rested for a couple of weeks the question of Sanchez or Ramsey is the same as RVP or Rooney.

With Ozil no playing, Ramsey will play further up the field and not in a withdrawn role as feared. The 1.5m saved is very useful elsewhere.

Isn't Sanchez maybe sufficient for 10.5m? For me CPL (Pullis) isn't easy, then you play against Baines and Coleman, then against promoted team (ok good fixture but at the begining of the season promoted team are always tougher to be beaten.) and MCI.

You know you're doing well when you have been involved in more goals than have been scored against you. 15 goals, 15 assists, 26 goals conceded in 2188 minutes...wow!

Are we having conversations about Ultimate on here yet?

I've picked my squad. It's the same as my fantasy team. Plus a bunch of others.

It's weird picking 25 players but great fun.

Dare I say it but I think it could be better than the original.

I say this as you can swap players in day by day over the GW. More to do and more fun IMO.

    Thoughts?

Nolan did contribute 7 goals, yes.

His goals will be replaced this Season by Downing.

Anyone else struggling with forwards they actually want?

Outside Rooney/RVP...no one else appeals that much really. Sturridge pretty expensive considering fixtures as well.

Just had a tinker and a front 8 of:

    Mata - Silva - Hazard - Ramsey - Eriksen

    Rooney - 6 - 6

is entirely do-able. Most teams playing with 1 up top over recent years has diluted the 'pool' of forwards in my opinion.

Just seen following on Stoke's official web site. Either it's a scoop on an imminent transfer deal to CPL or they're just bone idle and can't be bothered to change their content for more than a year (not hard to guess).

"Huth has gone on to firmly establish himself in the team and remains a big part of Tony Pulis’ plans for the future."
