Projections & Rate My Team Are Live

The Projections and Rate My Team tool were both updated in our Members Area earlier this week. Our members can now get access to these areas via the menu bar and start putting both to use in their pre-season selections.

Once again this season, the projections are based on the Rate My Team statistical model, developed by “Professor” Chris Atkinson, who some of you may remember as a guest on the ScoutCast.

Below you’ll find an FAQ on our Projections and Rate My Team, plus links to movies recorded last year with Chris that talk you through the functionality of Rate My Team and even the methods that go into building and maintaining it week on week.

How do I use the Projections?
Crucially, these tables can be used as another opinion-former when comparing players. Every player is rated for goals, assists, clean sheets etc based on values created by the “Rate My Team” statistical model – the values returned for each player are the expected values in accordance with its calculations.

A good way of thinking about them is to consider them average values for each player. If the season was played out 500 times, the values you’ll find in these projection tables are the average that the model would expect the player to score.

One of the most useful aspects of the Projections is the value column. You can sort by this to find the best value (Points Per FPL Million) delivered by players in each position.

With tables for the season and the opening six Gameweeks, you can get a view on long-term and short-term returns and value.

What are these values based on?
The Rate My Team statistical model is a complex beast – it uses historical data stretching back a number of seasons and, of course, specific player and team data. When generating the player values, the model looks at the specific fixture in each Gameweek, assessing the strength of both teams before calculating the likely team goals scored and how these goals will translate to specific player stats. The probability of a player taking part in the match is also a key ingredient – factors such as rotation, injuries and suspensions are taken into account. You’ll find out more on how Rate My Team works in the third movie due out in the next few days.

When will these Projections be updated?
It’s likely that we’ll update the projections at least every other day up until the season kick-off. As we get more data on likely first choice lineups and as the transfer market moves to cast doubt over starters, we will adapt and tweak the model accordingly. A new player, particularly if we anticipate they will threaten a starting role, can have a major impact on the projections and Rate My Team, influencing the projected output of his new team-mates.

The projections will also be updated throughout the season, providing a week by week view of what the model expects each player to score for the remaining Gameweeks to help guide your selections and transfers. We normally update on both Tuesday and Friday in order to build the latest team news into the numbers.

What is Rate My Team?
Rate My team is a statistical model built specifically to assess every player in the Premier League and return their expected values for Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points in a given Gameweek. The system is a complex and thorough one which, of course, plots the probabilities of a player’s time on the pitch, their expected number of goals, assists, bonus points, yellow and red cards, clean sheets, own goals, goals conceded and saves. The strength of the opponent they are facing in a given Gameweek is also crucial; so every team has an attacking, defensive rating, every player a probability of playing a given match with injuries, suspensions and international absence factored in.

How Can It Help Me?
If you’re a member you can use the Rate My Team tool in a number of ways. Firstly, you can use it as a projections tool to predict what specific players will score, on average, over the next X number of Gameweeks. As you’ll see in the movie below, you have a players table that can be filtered by position or FPL cost and which can be extended to show any number of Gameweeks. You can also sort on “Value” to find those players projected to offer the best points per million return.

However, this is just one part of the functionality. Once the season starts, Rate My Team can also analyse your existing FPL lineup, recommend captains, vice captains, your bench and order of substitutes and allow you to model your future transfers. In the second “My Team” movie below, you can preview this functionality in full.

Rather than post your team in the comments on the main site, our members can now enter their FPL code in Rate My Team and it will immediately offer you an appraisal of your squad. Using Rate my Team you can transfer players in and out of your squad and get an immediate appraisal of the impact of that transfer.

Rate my Team was used extensively by last season’s Fantasy Premier League winner, Tom Fenley. Next week he’ll be posting a two-part article guiding you on how he set about using the tool and other members’ area features to help him over his triumphant season.

Memberships for the coming season, giving you access to both the projections and Rate My Team tool, along with many other features, are available for the pre-season price of £12.50. Click here for further details, including an array of preview movies to demonstrate what’s on offer.

I apologise if I am coming across as unnecessarily argumentative, but see my response to your comment on the previous page regarding the playing striker dilemma.

I just don't quite understand the assertion that a 3rd striker must play in order for your team to be effective and/or balanced.

Thing is sometimes players don't play or get injured or carded. It's pretty good to not have to take hit's at this point to sort out the mess of a team which could have been avoided

I'll be wildcarding within the first 8 weeks which negates the issue somewhat. B/c, once I raise funds, I will most likely upgrade the 3rd striker to a mid-premium option at the expense of a 5th mid, and will then play 3-4-3 for most of the rest of the season.

But in terms of maximising my budget allocation on strong first XI players to start with, there is so much more to be gained than there is to lose by having a non-playing 3rd sub.

Hypothetically, If a player gets injured for just a week, or gets a 1 match red card ban, then I might keep them if they are important enough. I have my 2 playing defenders to account for that issue. If the player is out for any longer, then it's an easy transfer out. Either way, my bargain basement striker isn't required and my extra 1 million is busy scoring me points in the first team.

I presume you would have to have a similar opinion of a team which had a 4.5 mid and 2 4m defenders? Plenty of those around.

Not sure about some of the picks.

The midfield is very strong, and if you believe in Soldado then that's fine, but it leaves the defense quite exposed I feel. Having to play either a qpr defender or a 4 mil rotation risk each week in my 3rd defender spot (assuming you play baines and Davies each week) is a daunting prospect. Especially given that baines' fixtures are poor to start with.

I'd suggest downgrading baines to a Utd or Chelsea defender at around 6 mil, and using the other million to upgrade your 3rd defender. Perhaps Ferdinand to Debuchy or something along those lines.

Very informative. Thank you. QPR have Redknapp and I feel that he will field a strong defensive lineup and Ferdinand will be getting on the end of set pieces. I'm not concerned with that. More so Vaz Te and Hendo. Hendo is so dangerous sometimes and other times he's no where to be seen

I'm completely unconcerned about a non-playing 3rd striker, as long as you are confident with every other pick, because you need a strong and dependable first XI.

With regards to Henderson, I personally would steer clear. Liverpool's acquisition of a number of new offensive assets makes it hard to predict how exactly Henderson will be utilised. If anything though, it suggests that the points might be spread out across a few more of their attacking assets, so it follows that Henderson will score fewer points as a result. Fixtures aren't great to start either.

It's tough - there's not much going at that price.

I'd be more inclined to downgrade baines to a 6.5 or even 6 mil defender, and use the extra .5 to upgrade Henderson to arnautovic or 1 mil to de Jong.

    Mourinho confirming the riddle...

"...I can play Azpilicueta right back and Ivanovic centre back because of Filipe."

I realise it's pointing out the obvious but it does not make the answer any clearer.

5 into 4 don't go and I can't see any of them sitting on the bench for prolonged periods. You could even see all 5 switching about given the flexibility of Ivan and Azpil. Add Europe and Terry's age, the mud becomes even murkier.

but not left footed or a left back by trade. they've just bought someone that ticks both boxes (and quite effectively based on last season!)

but then that leaves one of Ivan and Azpil on the bench, both of whom are loved by Mourinho.

Ivan could replace Cahill but given last season, surely Cahill won't be benched and even if he is, he's not going to be allowed to vegetate there...

            Perhaps I'm over analysing it.

I reckon long term Ivan will lose out. even though he can play in RB or CB. dont think h will be happy with a reduced role.

can see it being Azpi, Terry, Cahill Luis as 1st choice back 4.

        Standard keepers
Defence looks weak, id look to downgrade either aguero to dzeko or rvp to rooney to free up cash. Agueros hamstring will go within the next few weeks to make the decision easier for you. Upgrade jonjo with the spare cash to siggy. With the spare funds, id look to upgrade each of your budget defenders by 0.5mil or more

Herrera should be nailed but i still wouldnt back him as there are other players with greater attacking potential. Solid side overall

so this is where I currently stand and it hinges on Verm going to United..could also free up some room elsewhere (like downgrading one of Haz or Sanchez to their obvious 9m counterparts) but overall I like it. not sold on Targett yet and if QPR go after another striker I may have to reassess Austin. half considering Bojan if he nails a spot

    Luis - Verm - Bavies - Targett - Wisdom
    Sanchez - Haz - Mata - Eriksen - Wanyama

Really starting to feel Luis is the best option to start the season with. Cahill ivanovic Terry all being fit makes you wonder whether mourinho will try an experiment in one of the easier early games. Can't see azpil playing lb unless Luis gets injured

Not too sure where he'll end up. But while he's still at chelsea you'd surely be crazy to invest.

not ozil because of vacation. erik is good because Pochettino will utilize him and get the best out of him. Silva is along the same lines after having performing well and being utilized better by Manuel Pell. Ramsey maybe placed at a more defensive role since Sanchez will be making the wing position his with carzola

What is the best formation to play with for the Barclays site?

I've been using the ESPN one the past two years and the 3-5-2 worked the best.

Similar to mine. Did you prefer the Hull/Stoke rotation to QPR/Palace?. Not sure how I fell about Jello.
