KPI Forward Analysis – Home and Away

We continue our series of articles for members focusing on the player Key Performance Indicators (KPI). This time around, we delve into the data to discover those forwards who favoured home comforts over 2013/14 and also assess the more consistent strikers who produced the same sort of attacking threat regardless of fixture.

For the unfamiliar, these Key Performers Indicator (KPI) tables are designed to use a series of key stats to allow our members to track form or change in player performance. By tracking the frequency of certain key statistics and comparing over two separate periods of time, we can ascertain each player’s form, whether it be an improvement or decrease in displays on the pitch. As mentioned in last summer’s introductory article, we’ve rolled out a preview movie which shows just how to get the best out of the KPI tables.

Has anybody heard from McNulty yet this year? I don't think he ran the world cup game last year but he did the year before. Just wondering if anybody had heard anything about it yet

Hah you timed that message well, first time I have been on in a while! I don't think I will be be running the cup unfortunately as I live in Australia now so it's just too difficult with the time zones and it takes a fair bit of time to run it which I'm not sure I can find over the next couple months. I'd be interested in joining one though if anyone wants to run it

Wow that was weird. That was a great tournament you ran btw. I don't think anybody will come remotely close to putting on the effort that you did. How is Australia?

Thanks, I liked the format but it was a bit time consuming so I think it would need a few people running it or simplify it a little. It was mainly working out the groups and rankings that was tricky.

I'm living in Melbourne now which is a great city. Been here 5 months nearly after a bit of travelling in Asia.

How's the team looking? I'm still pretty stuck, hoping some transfers can help me figure out some decent cheapies

Same I've been so far out of the loop for awhile now and I'm just on here trying to take it all in. I feel lost and clueless the start of every season nearly as far back as i can remember. Have you heard of any similar leagues or tournaments that anybody is doing?

Thanks for all the replies guys.
I have 9.5m to spend on two defenders(preferably rotating), so if I'm going to go palace/qpr, I'd only feel comfortable getting ward from palace.
So the question is which qpr defender will be nailed on at the price of 4.5m? Don't tell me Ferdinand lol

Atm my minute my biggest conundrum seems to be Costa or Giroud. I feel with Costa that whilst I'm taking more away from my defence, I have more flexibility in getting on a hot third striker and he's only 1m away from Studge should he suddenly become a necessity.

The one thing I know is that I don't know but I want to be flexible when it inevitably goes tits up.

Giroud is a bad pick. He should be ok for the beginning of the season because Walcott is injured but after that he'll be rotated. He's the kind of striker that makes midfielders more attractive FPLwise.

Goodmorning everyone. Could you please take a look at this and talk to me regarding the forwards especially. I'm having a little trouble there.

    Krull :: (Elliot)
    Filipe Luis :: Phil Jones :: Mariappa/Cameron :: (Targett) :: (Wisdom)
Sanchez :: Hazard :: Eriksen :: Sigurdsson :: (Matty James)
Rooney :: Diego Costa :: Pelle

For 18.0 mill: I've gone Costa + Pelle, based purely on fixtures. Costa with 2 games vs the promoted sides, no better fixtures to take a punt IMO. But could I be doing something better with the money for example: Sturridge + Long or Giroud + Dzeko (Not a big fan of this cause of the fixtures)

Cheers in advance for the input lads.

Hi guys, looking for some feedback for my team -

    Mannone (Myhill)
Reid - Debuchy - Vlaar - Coleman (Wisdom)
Hazard - Ramsay - Erikson - Tadic (Albrighton)
    Rooney - Sturridge (Zamora)

    1. Don't really mind not having a 5+ GK at this stage.
    2. Reid is the hammers most solid option in defense and with our 2013/14 CS history, im happy giving him a go for our favourable first few rounds.
    3. Coleman or Baines?.. or beef up mid?
    4. Originally had in Yaya and Silva, but just made changes to accomodate for Hazard, and upgrade Giroud to Rooney. Thoughts?
    5. Tadic looks v good, especially with set pieces etc.
    6. Sturridge + Rooney will be pretty solid for me - Can't imagine making too many changes up forward unless I reconsider on Remy.

    Some feedback would be handy.

      Reid is a solid choice.

Coleman is better in open play but I think I'd go Baines due to set pieces and penalties. But Everton have tough starting fixures so I would recommend another defender for the time being or downgrade Coleman then upgrade Albrighton to play with 5 mids (I like this one better personally)

      4. Some good decisions

If you fancy Tadic go for it, he's a good option

I like 3-4-3 but if you are happy with 4-4-2 or 3-5-2 to each their own

Thanks for the feedback guys. If Ramsay gets injured or doesn't fire early, I'd probably be looking to replace with Ozil- First seasons in the EPL always have the potential to be a bit slow, so I don't feel the need to risk it with Costa or Sanchez until proven to a degree, and we all know Ozil has the class. This probably contradicts my selection of Tadic, but I need him as a differential, 2.5% ownership - could be a cash cow, or even a keeper...

Reeker, I think i will move out the everton defense, might bring in Caulker at 5m, leaving me with 2mil to upgrade Albrighton and a 3-5-2 formation.

        Any promising 6.5m mids? Johnson?

Sanchez is a top class striker playing in an attacking role for an attacking team.

Yaya had a good season and is pretty clinical but im betting he drops off a bit this season.

'Irvine’s preferred formation has been a 4-2-3-1 and, with Brown nailed-on, the likes of Victor Anichebe and Saido Berahino will be hoping to grab a role on the flank in order to stay in the first-team picture.' ------ That is from the scout report

So Ideye Brown is nailed on then?

Fair enough from a WBA point of view but who in their right mind would have a WBA attacker in their squad? I really think Moses is poor. He'd probably look ok there but really he's not a good player.

Nolan isn't a good player either but from an FPL point of view he has been a very good option in the past. In fact Moses was too when he played for Crystal Palace a few years back.

Is anyone here considering avoiding getting a cheap 5th mid? I'm thinking going with a solid front 8 where Siggy is my cheapest player. The main reason is simply because we have no idea who will be the surprise budget attacker this season, its a pure lottery to try and guess before GW1. My plan is to wait for the ideal budget midfielder to reveal themselves then I'll simply downgrade my worst performing midfielder to that player.

Man, every .5 I can save here and there in my team is so important - having a 5th mid worth 6m is a terrible idea. In the same line of thinking you can just transfer your underperforming 5th mid for a decent one. Realistically though you'll never do that because your 5th mid spot is usually useless. Don't do that.

I never said Siggy would be my 5th mid. The plan is to rotate my big 8 according to fixtures at the beginning, then when a viable budget 5th mid becomes available I'll simply downgrade one of my players to that must have 5th mid. Barkley and Sterling are examples in previous seasons of players who came from out of the blue after a couple of weeks. Nobody had those players in their GW1 team.

Barkley was terrible after his first few weeks last year. Regardless I still think it's a bad idea. I don't mean to be a killjoy but it's not a good FPL strategy. Just get your big hitters in and have a cheap 5th mid who'll probably played 4 times in a whole season max.

Barkley was good in the sense that he made me a lot of cash through price rises. Sterling and Adam (when he was at Blackpool) are examples of how a 5th mid can be useful. I don't prescribe to the useless 5th mid strategy.

the thing is you have cash on the bench each week and you "need" to use up a free transfer to carry out your plan...but there's no certainty this will work...you don't know when this mythical cheap attacker will become obvious...injuries elsewhere may well scupper your plans

the template pricing structure is popular for a reason...it usually works well

We all need to use a free transfer after 2 weeks. So I see no problem with this, unless there is a problem in defence of course, however that would probably have to be because of an injury.

I see what you mean but you're not thinking through properly (in my opinion)

          (a) 2 weeks with cash on the bench
          (b) you might get a defensive injury that needs sorted
          (c) transfer window still open might mess you up
          (d) are you going to buy this hot cheap player and then bench him?...if YES why bother?...if NO then you've still got cash on the bench in gw3 and perhaps beyond

            (a) I don't mind a bit of cash on the bench, rotating mid priced assets according to fixtures isn't all that bad.

            (b) yes thats true, but point (a) remains

            (c) I'll have to be careful but the transfer window affects every FPL player so I don't see how it specifically relates to my situation.

            (d) I'm happy to bench him but its nice to know that when needed he can step up and be a threat unlike useless players like Britton. Its particularly useful when you have a player out injured for one game so it means I don't need to urgently make a transfer.

Not quite the same as what I'm suggesting. I'm guessing you'll have a budget striker instead? I'm looking to go with no budget attacker simply because there are no standout options. I'd rather wait for a standout option to reveal themselves in that budget category as we have seen in previous seasons.

Alright, here's what I have. Does it look OK or should I acquiesce to the template and bring in another big hitter in the midfield?

    Guzan
    Terry - Debuchy - Davies - Ferdinand - 4.0
    Mata - Lamela - De Jong - Siggy - 4.5
    RVP - Rooney - Dzeko

I like it for its uniqueness 😛

At the same time, you could lose quit a bit even in the first 3 weeks if some of the template mids fire, and/or man Utd stutter.

im a fan of the rvp rooney double up but i think 3 attackers from the same team generally doesnt work. I tried this with city last season and i found the points werent spread around as much as one would hope even though they scored a lot of goals. I like the mid-priced mid picks though , i think they all have big potential!

    Mannone/Krul

You really need a better striker than Jelavic. There are lots of good options: Bony, Giroud, Costa, RVP, Pelle are a few of them.

They are too expensive. Hull should be more of a threat attacking wise with Snodgrass and Ince their. Jelavic could be this seasons J.Rod

you are kidding yourself if you think jelavic is going to do what jrod did last season. Hull are not southampton! Having said that he is a decent option as far as his price is concerned. I woudl look to drop though once their good start runs out. I also dont know if the 2 city due to starting fixtures are neccesary. If you do fancy hull attack why dont you rather switch silva to snoddy and upgrade jelly a better striker. Its more important to have a power front 3 then a power midfield 4 imo. top strikers inevitably outscore most mids by the end of the season.

I was set on a 3-5-2 because the ESPN fantasy league scored the players differently; however, for the barclays site, the 3-4-3 is the best bet. Stay away from the 3-5-2

Lamela needs to continue to perform, and it needs to be clear that Pochettino sees him primarily as a support striker. If we see this things in the next two friendlies, which I think we will, it's Lamela for me.

Playing around with the front 8 versus front 7 (3-5-2).

    A) Mata, Shaw, Barnes (4.5 ST bench fodder)

    B) Eriksen, Jones, 6 mil fwd (long/jelly/Austin/ideye/etc.)

The benefit of B is I have the option of a 3-4-3 or 3-5-2 (5th mid being siggy).

The detriment of B being that it reduces the flexibility of the midfield (as I would have an 8mil, 7mil and 6 mil), I prefer mata over eriksen, and I'm not a fan of any of the 6mil strikers.

    Thoughts?
