Moving Target

Moving Target – Andre Wisdom

West Brom boss Alan Irvine continued to restructure his first-team squad for the season ahead with the acquisition of Andre Wisdom on a season-long loan deal from Liverpool:

The 21-year-old is the sixth player to arrive at The Hawthorns since Irvine took the helm earlier this summer and, as the new manager admitted, his adaptability affords the Baggies options at the back:

“I’m delighted to welcome Andre to the club. I’ve spoken to Brendan Rodgers, who I’ve known for a very long time and who I trust implicitly. He said Andre would do a good job for us. That was reassuring. He’s a versatile lad. He’s played as a right-back for Liverpool in the Premier League last season, he also played as a full-back for Derby. He grew up as a centre-back and played on the left side of central defence for Liverpool against Preston on Saturday.”

The History

Yorkshire-born Wisdom started his career with Bradford City’s youth team before being snapped up by Liverpool at the age of 14. After progressing through the Merseysiders’ youth system, he was finally afforded a senior debut by Brendan Rodgers in 2012/13 and, after playing 22 times across all competitions, scoring once and chipping in with a pair of assists, was farmed out on loan to Derby County in October 2013.

Utilised exclusively as a right-back by Steve McLaren, Wisdom was nailed-on for the Championship outfit. Serving up a trio of assists over 37 appearances, he helped The Rams to the Wembley Play-Off Final against QPR back in May, where, despite dominating for much of the match, they fell to a 1-0 defeat.

At international level, Wisdom has represented England at every youth level, from Under-16 to Under-21, on a total of 37 occasions and has found the net three times.

The Prospects

A peripheral figure at Anfield, the move has immediately brought Wisdom onto Fantasy managers’ radars due to his budget price-tag across the Fantasy games. Available for a mere 4.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 5.2 in the Sky Sports Fantasy game, there’s a hope that the youngster could cement a starting berth for The Baggies as Irvine looks to improve upon a dire previous season which saw the club finish just three points clear of the drop zone.

Handed a start at right-back on his debut against Sacramento Republic at the weekend, Wisdom played the full 90 minutes in a 3-1 win as Irvine’s side triumphed for the fourth successive outing this summer. Whilst Fantasy suitors will be delighted with his start, the imminent arrival of Costa Rican international defender Cristian Gamboa suggests that Wisdom faces a real battle for the right-back berth as Irvine looks to strengthen following the departures of Billy Jones and Steven Reid over the summer.

However, with the 4.0-priced Chris Baird also offering an option in central midfield and right-back, the situation is far from clear right now. Whilst Irvine has cited the youngster’s versatility as key, The Baggies are not short of alternatives in central defence – new boy Joleon Lescott is favourite to get the nod after quitting champions City for the Midlands, whilst Gareth McAuley, Jonas Olsson and Craig Dawson are also in the mix.

Intriguingly, though, the local press reckon that the incoming Gamboa could be earmarked for an occasional role on the right of midfield. Pacier than Wisdom, he was used as a wing-back during Costa Rica’s recent World Cup campaign and could offer more from an attacking point of view – certainly, if such a scenario transpires, he could well be the best option from Irvine’s defence.

Certainly, five of West Brom’s first six home fixtures (SUN, EVE, BUR, CPL, NEW) suggest defensive returns could be on the cards, thus strengthening their appeal as cheap rotation options. Wisdom, undoubtedly, has the potential to be a very budget-friendly FPL option for the season ahead, though with a number of ifs and buts still surrounding the Baggies’ likely back-four, Fantasy managers may be best keeping a keen eye on Irvine’s intentions before acquiring the youngster with any degree of conviction.

Enrique at Liverpool could be an interesting option this year at 5m, providing no new LB is purchased (and he proves his fitness!).

Last year was a mess at the back, but the team was accommodating two strikers and a pretty unsettled backline. Lovren should do a job at the back.

Considering the season before when Liverpool mainly played with one striker, they were one of the tightest teams at the back and when Rodgers managed Swansea they were sound defensively. Simerly at the beginning of last season when Suarez was out, the team did alright at the back, despite Toure playing 😛

Enrique also carries some threat going forward. Remains to see how he fits into Rodgers plan after a season out, but barring a new signing, i'd expect him to start over Flanagan.

One to monitor anyways as Liverpool transition to life without Suarez.

No, we would have lost it by more points, he isn't great going forward but he is so bad defensively it is unreal, and he doesn't listen to other players which he should, that's why I suspect he'll be moved on.

Their defence wasn't so much bad as unlucky?

Liverpool were in the Top 5 of the league for limiting their opponents shots in the area.

They were done in errors which resulted in a goal. 'Pool had 42 errors which lead on 13 goals.

If this were even reduced by ½, then Liverpool would by on par with the likes of Arsenal for goals conceded for the year.

Allot of individual errors last season. They were pretty exposed at times.

Individually, good players for the most part. But it did not click last season. Lovren leadership should help and a settled side, +Sakho settling in.

Enrique's problem is that he doesnt listen to anyone and just does his own thing.
He marauds forward when he feels like it, and inevitably gives the ball away.

Defensively he is suspect, and when tackling he usually uses his upper body strength to push opponents off the ball when he's tracking back, when he bothers, often conceding free kicks.

He's quick and strong, but not good enough to start.
Flanagan is definitely ahead of Enrique in the pecking order for LB.

I expect Liverpool's defence to tighten up next season, partly because of the improvement brought by Lovren, and partly because we can no longer rely on simply outscoring opponents. The trio of 1-0 wins at the start of last season while Suarez was out are more likely. The defence could well be a good option, but I'm steering clear for the first 3 fixtures at least.

Not sure i'd agree on Flanagan ahead of Enrique in the pecking order. Flan played last year because Enrique was crocked.

Going forward, he is better then Flanagan. Whilst he has his brainfart moments at the back, he has the pace and strength to recover (sometimes :P).

I think for now he is the more rounded player then Flanagan and he is left footed.

Obviously Enrique was ahead of Flanagan in the pecking order for LB last year, but his injury and Cissokho's terribleness gave Flanno a chance, which he took. He is still better defensively than Enrique.

Ideally we will sign a new LB to start, let Johnson go, and play Flanagan at RB

So, what formation will everyone be going with at the start? I've always gone 3-4-3 by default but can see a viable team that tweaks it to a 3-5-2. Anyone care to share their formation or any theory on why a particular formation may be better this season (eg. Strikers and the BP system punishing missed shots, etc etc)? Thanks...

3-4-3 just because I think the trio of Roon - Dzeko - Costa are looking very tasty indeed and allow some flexibility to jump onto other strikers like Studge/Giroud/Pelle/Kun etc.....

And lets not forget, strikers usually score the most points compared to other areas of the pitch

      Chels - Utd - Medium - Medium - Cheap

i really think if you treat the bonus just like last season then you wont be going far wrong.
not sure on formations. at one point in the season there may be 5 midfielders you are desperate for so 352 is an option, then a few weeks later there are 3 strikers you simply can't do without. always players first formation second for me (or not even second, almost ignore it full stop)

After that, by your own admission the biggest difference we'd see is 7 points for L. Shaw & most players wouldn't see anything more than a 1-2 pt swing for the year.

I know Baines is fixture-proof, to some extent. But I'd still worry about having him from the start given his horrible opening fixtures. Plus he didnt exactly rip it up last year. I'd prefer Terry (for now) and upgrade one of your 4.0mil DFers to someone who'll actually play and offer you some cover

    Was all set with this...

    Mannone/Krul
    Debuchy Terry Shaw (4.0 4.0)
    Nasri Eriksen Ramsey Snodgrass (Albrighton)
    RVP Bony Pelle

But tempted with a 'power 5' mid..

    Mannone/Krul
    Debuchy Terry Shaw (4.0 4.0)
    Nasri Eriksen Ramsey Fabregas Mata
    Dzeko Bony (Bobby Z)

      Pelle >Dzeko

Based on one or the other playing (so good rotation), thoughts on these options. Rest of mid/att plays each week.

    Puncheon + Austin (0.5 leftover)
    De Jong + Fletcher
    Snod + Ings (0.5 leftover)
    Ince + Ings (1 leftover)
    5m Burnley mid? + Long/Jelly (1.5 leftover)

Shaw, Evans, Jones, Smalling in that order for me. Think we'll sign another CB, which would currently affect Smalling in the 3-man defence.

already have Sanchez, Roonpig and Mata, and other forward is Jelavic.
