Moving Target

Moving Target – Dejan Lovren

Having plundered Rickie Lambert and Adam Lallana from Southampton earlier this summer, Brendan Rodgers returned to the St Mary’s club for the third time in order to acquire centre-half Dejan Lovren. The 25-year-old arrives at Anfield for a reported £20m and is Rodgers’ fifth signing of the close-season, with Lazar Markovic and Emre Can also making their way to Merseyside:

Discussing the move with the club’s official website, the Reds boss admitted the Croatian’s organisational skills will be crucial for the campaign ahead:

“This is a very important signing for us and I’m delighted it’s completed so Dejan can join up with us on our US tour. I think he’s a really commanding centre-half. I’ve said since we lost Jamie Carragher that we needed that leadership. He’s a player that gives us that. He’s very strong, very commanding, but he can play. I’ve been really impressed with him. I watched him at Lyon, he came into the Premier League with Southampton and I know their players thought he was a big driving force for them and kept them defensively solid. I think he’s a player that can still improve, still develop as he’s in his mid-20s. He’s someone I’m really looking forward to working with.”

The History

A product of the NK Karlovac youth system, Lovren was snapped up by Dinamo Zagreb back in 2004. The defender was handed his senior debut as a 16-year-old a couple of years later before being loaned out to Croatian club Inter Zaprešić – over a couple of seasons, he became a first-team regular and scored once in 50 league outings.

After returning to his parent club for the start of the 2008/09 campaign, Lovren racked up 36 appearances over the next season-and-a-half before being acquired by Lyon midway through the 2009-10 season for €8 million. Spending four years with the Ligue 1 outfit, the Croatian gradually established himself as a key figure at the back and registered two goals and a pair of assists over 72 appearances.

Signed by Southampton boss Mauricio Pochettino last June, the centre-half turned out 31 times, scoring on a couple of occasions, with his displays proving fundamental to a run of 15 clean sheets over 2013/14.

On the international scene, Lovren has represented his country from Under-17 to Under-21 level on a total of 55 occasions, scoring six times. The centre-half has also notched twice in 21 appearances for the senior side and played all three group games in the recent World Cup.

The Prospects

Liverpool’s free-scoring side may have earned plenty of plaudits and Fantasy investment after racking up 101 goals in the season gone by, but a series of poor defensive displays ultimately proved their undoing. Rodgers’ side came within two points of the title in spite of a backline that conceded 50 times over 2013/14 – only 14 goals fewer than rivals City (37) and Chelsea (27) combined – and mustered a mere 10 clean sheets over the entire campaign.

Clearly, the Merseysiders need improving at the back if they are to maintain their momentum and Lovren’s acquisition certainly looks a step in the right direction. Having splashed the cash and cited the Croatian’s leadership skills, Rodgers sees the new boy as vital to his plans, and with starts looking guaranteed, it leaves Daniel Agger, Martin Skrtel and Mamadou Sakho vying for the remaining central defensive berth if, as expected, Liverpool operate with a four-man back-line again. Whilst Skrtel’s seven goals last term underline his capabilities in the opponents’ box, there’s every chance that Sakho could be set to partner the new boy, bearing in mind that Rodgers forked out £15m for the Frenchman’s services this time last year.

Priced at 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 6.3 in the Sky Sports game, Lovren is already the seventh most popular defender in the former game, with an ownership of 16% and rising. Granted, full-back pair Jon Flanagan and Jose Enrique are cheaper at 5.0 apiece and, if either can nail down a regular role this term, they could provide better value than the Croatian but for now, with Skrtel and 6.0 and both Agger and Sakho at 5.5, Lovren certainly seems the safest option for those willing to take a punt on Rodgers’ defence.

Having conceded 93 goals in two seasons under Rodgers, though, it’s fair to say Liverpool are hardly deserving of such lofty price-tags at the back. Bearing in mind that the likes of Mathieu Debuchy is similarly priced and offers a route into an Arsenal defence with 17 clean sheets last term, and Tottenham new boy Ben Davies, at 5.0, will be hoping to benefit from Pochettino’s installation at Spurs, there could well be better value found elsewhere.

Whilst there’s hope that Lovren’s arrival may just be the catalyst for a turnaround in defensive fortunes for the Mersysiders, trips to City and Spurs in the first three fixtures may convince many to steer clear initially. One look at the schedule from Gameweek 4, when Liverpool face four kind home matches (AVL, EVE, WBA, HUL) and trips to West Ham and QPR in the subsequent six, suggests that if Lovren’s installation makes the difference, we could start to reconsider Liverpool’s defence once again.

Cameron isn't a confirmed starter anymore. Replace with vlaar or colocinni,

Targett also might. It start if the club signs someone new like they seem to want to so keep an eye on that.

Other than that you're good to go

established cheap goal keepers usually get plenty enough points by the end of the season. I'd expect Krul to get 120pts+ which is plenty for a goal keeper at 4.5m

Its not the end of the world. Gk points are less diverse than other positions due to the counter balancing effect of save pts and the lack of bonus. Depends if you think that 0.5 will net you more than having someone to rotate. I assume you will get elliot to back him up in case of injury?

So the fact that I won't captain him in the first 6 weeks, is also an argument for not getting him in the first place...

Looking out 6 weeks (not got round to getting my membership for full ticker) liverpool fixtures are matched by man u each week. Predicting out beyond that is probably a waste of time as you can make transfers to bring in the hot form players for the hot form fixtures.

I an thinking sturridge + de jong / lamela / erik may be better than dzeko + sanchez though

Hold on what? You suggest rotation, when in the tradition sense, it means owning both at the same time alternating captaincy week by week according to fixture difficulty and/or home/away rotation.

Ok but by committing to 19 GW's you are basically saying you will be keeping those strikers the entire time. Will you keep them if they drop off in form? I guess its the same with any rotation really but the stakes are higher with premium assets.

The reason they are so expensive is because they have proven to be the best points scorers in one or more previous seasons...

Nothing is set in stone, but as premium asset I'd be showing them more patience than normal since they have shown they can explode at any time...

Oh I think I misunderstood your original point. The rotation phrase completely confused me. It seems you are talking about buying players who are about to start a good run of fixtures, to me this seems completely normal and is a standard tactic. Its a good way to jump ahead of the pack as they wait for form first.

Agreed.. I also want explosive players that I can captain, and that's whats leading me towards Hazard and away from Fabregas, who I seem to think will offer amazing consistency of 6-7 points, but not so many 15+ games... if that makes sense...

Same here. Sanchez over Ramsey, Rooney/RVP over Mata for that reason. Aguero v Sturridge is my debate, but I think Dzeko covers me a bit.

Fabregas at Arsenal was a very reliable captain pick, he was involved in everything, no reason why he wont be at Chelsea, Lampard was and I think Jose may go the 433 route to get the best out of everyone.

    Currently with

    Speroni/Green
    Filipe/Davies/Debuchy/Jones SUN/Colo
    Sanchez/Hazard/Siggy/Brady/Albrighton
    Rooney/Dzeko/Giroud

How does that look? For a while i was with RVP up top and a cheaper back line but after some browsing i've gone for a team based for more Clean Sheets. Would probably go with a 343 or 433 depending on fixtures. Always like to have three strikers.

    Any suggestions welcome, cheers!

I think 2/3 MUN players are a must with their fixtures.

        1 x De Gea/Shaw

        1-2 x Mata/Rooney/RVP

If they go with Rooney and RVP up front perhaps D) could be the most explosive....

i think this situation will get more problematic as walcott comes back, but for now you'd imagine so. then again, he can't realistically play ozil, wilshere, cazorla, sanchez AND ramsey without screwing up the balance even now methinks, so somebody's gonna be missing out.

3-4-3 is always the ideal formation, but in reality unless you've planned meticulously for fixtures and happen to have an injury free squad throughout, formation changes will occasionally make sense.

i remember, but that's a pretty small sample :p i rate sturridge pretty highly, but i find this 'proven premier league quality' stuff to be overstated at times. players will often go from hero to zero on a season by season basis, and suarez was involved in a huge amount of sturridge's points last season. also, costa's playing in a better team and is probably a better player, so there's that. i don't think there'll be much between them personally... hence, fixtures are paramount for me

one arsenal, no liverpool. but this last couple years i've followed the fixtures early doors before any form has been established, and it's worked really well for me, so i'm sticking to it 😛 definitely bringing in sturridge later, he'll probably be one of my most used players this season.

good strategy, i'm kicking off with sturridge and if costa demands to be picked after GW1 (ie. he's passed the eye test) then it's an option to take Sturridge out for him if i choose.

Weimann is nailed on the RHS side of a 4-3-3 or up top in at 4-4-2 for Villa. Granted he's not explosive (hence he's 5.5 mil) but he'll grab you a goal or assist every few weeks.

I'm not saying anything other than the fact its probably not the best idea to plan transfers which involve selling players who did well. Maybe consider not starting with Costa and just going straight to Sturridge? Or just back form and consider a different Liverpool player.

I'm going to use their rough opening fixtures to assess which Liverpool midfielder I want to get. Sturridge is a little too pricey this season I think, especially with the unknown affects of no Suarez. I also think there is serious value to be had in Liverpools midfield but we need to wait and see who is nailed on. As an example I think Sterling could be outstanding value this season as he's 3m cheaper than Sturridge, that is significant.

Prefer to see Mata in midpark. Gks - feel you are better off with Mannone/Krul combo saving you 1mill.

One or two question marks over starts with some players.

yeah, i don't get having utd defenders either. leaky last year, dodgy looking in friendlies (tons of space behind the wing backs atm, really shows up utd's need for a proper defensive midfielder alongside herrera IMO), and clean sheets are generally pot luck at the start of the season anyway so why overspend? midfield looks kinda week, you could bulk it up if you scaled down the defense.

You need to monitor lamela, de jong, dzeko, targett etc make sure they all look like sure enough starters, you may need the money then. If you could find the money for lamela > mata then that is a definite upgrade.

there is a small chance pants steals the no. 1 position from him. Why would he have moved if there was "no chance"

He moved because he needs to be at a club to keep earning all that coin. Of course he hopes to be #1 but like any backup keeper he'll need the #1 to start failing first.

No but i do think his minutes will be managed a lot this season prior to those matches. For example, if pool are 2-3 up after 65-70 mins he'll come off. Could curtail his overall point production and will need to monitored closely

How rodgers will approach demands of europe is a big unknown. I suggest sturridge will start most games but may get the occasional rest for easier fixtures where there is a fixture pile up. This is pretty consistent with how a lot of top players are used by CL clubs. Generally i find the risks of CL rotation are over stated where there is a clear pecking order but it could be enough to dissuade me from a player compared to another from a team like man u with no such issues.

He's only 20 though and did score 7 goals from 19 appearances for Partizan last season.

“I can say that apart from Ronaldo and Messi, Markovic is one of the best talents I’ve ever seen at 19 years of age.” - Avram Grant

“What can I say about our Markovic? It was excellent playing with this fantastic kid for six months. He has such massive potential that if he changed his attitude in training he could be one of Europe’s best players in his position. But he’s young, he’ll mature, and then nobody will be able to stop him!” - Nemandja Matic

Wow those are big accolades. Rodgers helped Sterling to become a key player of the team at a young age so I see no reason why he can't get Markovic to be just as successful. This could be a break out season for the youngster and looks like he could be a regular starter.

Rodgers is brilliant developing the youngsters. Sounds like he has an iffy attitude but BR is good with the man management stuff. Could fill the massive hole left by Luis one day hopefully

    so guys.

given the situation at southampton, are there any interesting differentials worth considering? could ward-prowse be nailed on as things stand, perhaps? ramirez? i know a lot of people are looking at targett too. i realise they're probably gonna try to replace some of the deserters, but there's gotta be a bargain in there come GW1.

I think I will wait and see. No doubt some cheap options will appear but Southampton have a lot of buying to do before the transfer window closes. At this stage I wouldn't want to back any of those guys for fear of them being replaced by new signings.

Didn't Sterling play on the wings last season? How would he fare playing in the hole/ support striker role?

He has played as a support striker as well. I'm half expecting him to play in that role this season.

They need to sign one really. The 442 diamond might come back as well where Sterling was playing in behind the two strikers.

This is all just speculation. They used a 442 diamond last season to accommodate both Suarez and Sturridge, who knows what will happen this season, they will need to sign a new striker if they want to keep using that formation on occasion.

BR has loads of options mate and he's not afraid to switch it up weekly if need be. Sterling can play in the hole too. Sterling Lala Cout Marko can all play in any attacking mid position I reckon.
Can't second guess it yet. Form will decide the starters and formation
