Moving Target

Moving Target – Patrick Van Aanholt

Sunderland boss Gus Poyet finally ended the search for a new left-back last week by snapping up Patrick van Aanholt from Chelsea. The 23-year-old arrives at the Stadium of Light on a four-year contract and is the Black Cats’ fourth signing of the summer, following Jordi Gomez, Billy Jones and Costel Pantilimon to the club:

After completing his move to Wearside, the Dutchman revealed he rejected other suitors in order to stay in the English top-flight and was quick to talk up his attacking intentions for the season ahead:

“I had a couple of offers from different countries but the Barclays Premier League is where I want to be, I want to show everybody what kind of player I am and what I am capable of doing. I am a left-back who likes to go forward and I like to take people on. I will also try to get some assists but I will do my defending first because that is where my role starts, it is all about helping the team and I think I will do a good job.”

The History

After progressing through the Den Bosch and PSV Eindhoven youth systems over a period of four years, Van Aanholt was snapped up by Chelsea as a 17-year-old back in 2007. Despite a seven-year stay at Stamford Bridge, the Dutchman played just eight times for the Chelsea first-team (delivering a goal and assist) and was mainly farmed out on loan by the London club after failing to displace Ashley Cole in the starting XI.

Spells at Coventry (20 appearances, one assist), Newcastle (seven league outings), Leicester (12 games, one goal and one assist) and Wigan (four appearances) between 2009 and 2012 afforded Van Aanholt little opportunity to establish himself as a regular, though.

A temporary move to Vitesse Arnhem in January 2012 finally helped him settle down and, over the course of two-and-a-half seasons on loan at the Dutch club, he finally found his form. After serving up two goals and five assists in 46 appearances in his first 18 months, Van Aanholt’s attacking forays came to fruition last season, where he produced five goals and five assists in 38 matches over all competitions.

At international level, the raiding left-back has represented Holland at youth level on 26 occasions, scoring once, whilst he’s also turned out a couple of times for the senior side.

The Prospects

With the versatile Phil Bardsley and on-loan Marcos Alonso both departing the club over the summer, Van Aanholt looks set to be handed a regular role at left-back for the Black Cats in the season ahead.

Yet to be listed in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, a price of 4.5 seems likely, whilst a cost of just 4.4 in the Sky Sports game makes Van Aanholt one of the cheapest first-choice defenders around.

Analysing his stats from last term, the Dutchman’s attacking displays bode well – a total of 52 shots over 29 appearances equates to 1.8 attempts per game, whilst in terms of creativity, he averaged one key pass per league match. Bearing in mind that Alonso registered 1.6 shots and created 1.1 chances per match during his loan stint, the Dutchman looks a like-for-like replacement for the Fiorentina man.

In terms of defensive prospects, Poyet’s arrival clearly made a significant difference to Sunderland’s resilience. After conceding in every match under Paolo di Canio, the Wearsiders managed 11 shut-outs in the remaining 31 league fixtures (six at home and five on their travels) and, with their backline options so kindly priced, many Fantasy managers are eyeing up the Black Cats ahead of a schedule which pits them against West Brom, QPR, Burnley, Swansea and Stoke in the opening seven Gameweeks.

With an average of 4.9 points per game under Poyet, though, it’s difficult to look beyond Vito Mannone as the best value route amongst Sunderland’s defensive options. The Italian’s heroics between the posts have already earned him over 13% ownership in FPL – the sixth most popular keeper – though if Poyet decides to alternate Mannone with Pantilimon as his number one as the season unfolds, Fantasy faith in Van Aanholt may take a turn for the better.

1st one. DDG nailed on for a start (though I do think Jones is too, but you never know), so it comes down to WBA v's Swans, and I like Swans better.

Also with your keeper, you'll be forced to play every week, you'd go for DDG over Foster any day of the week. At least you can bench a DFer in bad weeks

He's a safer bet than lets say, Dzeko to play every week & the Belgian is fixture proof.

Although with Europa idk, how much of a long-term choice Lukaku is?

Recent history tells us the Europa league isn't kind to EPL teams or their fantasy assets.

      Newcastle & Swans in particular.

Are Those that are saying that choosing Albrighton because of his high ownership and price drop are massively wrong?...

Is it not the LOW OWNERSHIP players that drop quicker? Take a look at RVP. High owned, barely dropped 0.5 million, whereas those players that have lower ownership will see larger price falls as the few that own them are more affected by the percentage that lose them.

In maths terms, if a player loses 30,000 of his 300,000 ownership (what Albrighton may be roughly) then a player with only 3,000 owners are equally affected if 300 transfer them out.

Or is this not how the the algorithm works?

True, but the arguement this I'll stands. It will take a lot more transfers out to make Albrighton drop compared too other 4.5 options with massively lower ownership.

You might be right though. He's the sort of player that won't be at the top of people's transferring out priority too. Most people concentrate on the expensive players. I'd probably leave him in my team until the Jan WC unless I somehow had no other pressing matters, which rarely happens.

But there are more people owning the other one to start with. That's why it's percentage based. I don't honestly know if the 'wisdom' on here is right or not. But I do remember Kelvin Davies dropping to 3.8 and he was very popular. And Lukaku plummeted after his Chelsea no-shows.

To be honest, it probably has more to do with the type of managers who own them and whether they're likely to be active managers. Albrighton had a big following from the start, suggesting active, well informed owners. They're more likely to sell him than casuals who pick filler at random and then abandon the game after two weeks.

Ownership shouldn't make any difference when it's a percentage as, like you say, it's all done on proportion.
However it does seem that the highest owned players drop the quickest.
In Albrighton's case I imagine a lot of people who put him in expect him to do well, if he doesn't they will get rid.
Those who put Mikel in don't expect him to play and will be more comfortable keeping him.

        Hazard, mata, eriksen, lamela, siggy
        Costa, Rooney, bojan

With 1m in the bank to get sturridge at a later date. Not sure I can do better than eriksen, lamela, bojan for that money in those positions...

No, too risky IMO, not in terms of their quality or potential to score big, but I think it's one or the other, and then spend the money on another big name.

They lack a form striker to put away the chances they create. I'd only have one of them but potentially review it when Spurs fixtures pick up.

          I have at the moment.

Very interesting stats on Azpic vs Ivan (and any other half decent fullback) though. It remains to be seen whether they are down to him playing a secondary role or whether the left back's job is massively shackled carrying the burden of Hazard.

Vidal has been yet again linked to United despite Juve saying they have no interest in letting him go.... This rumor never seems to be going away and now apparently their is a £200,000 a week contract formally agreed for a fee of £47 million. Not believing a word til I see him lift a red shirt but hypothetically if he does arrive at the club, would he be in a lot of teams here?

If you own DDG (or any expensive GK for that matter) what do you do for a backup since their teammates are also relatively pricey? Need to have at least a serviceable backup in case of injury, right? Just can't see spending 10m+ on one spot then...

If you're struggling on a decision, whether it be between one team or another, a handful of players or just anything in real life, flip a coin.

Not just flip it normally, like so:

If I was stuck between say Hazard and Fábregas, I would say

    Heads = Hazard
    Tails = Fábregas

I flip it, and I get tails

But inside I feel a bit disappointed. This shows the true outcome. You will either feel slightly happy, or disappointed. This shows how you truly feel, and go with this decision.

Of course, you might feel neither of these. In this case, spam your question on here and piss everyone off 😉
