Scout Scribbles – Wednesday Friendlies Round Up

Bojan Krkic scores for the third successive match as Stoke brush aside Real Betis at the Britannia. Elsewhere, Everton winless summer continues with a 3-1 home defeat at the hands of Celta Vigo, with Aiden McGeady grabbing the Toffees’ only goal:

Bojan Strikes Again for Potters
Stoke’s summer signing from Barcelona continued his excellent pre-season form by scoring for the third time in as many appearances last night. Bojan was fielded on the right of a 4-2-3-1 formation against Real Betis, with Stephen Ireland behind lone forward Mame Biram Diouf and Marko Arnautovic on the left – the new boy also played a part in the hosts’ first in a 2-0 triumph after playing in Phil Bardsley, who provided the assist for fellow full-back Erik Pieters.

Available for 5.5 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Bojan’s ownership has noticeably risen over the last few days as Fantasy managers take advantage of his budget price tag. Now sitting in over 10% of FPL teams, the Spaniard is the ninth most popular frontman thus far and the bandwagon is certainly backed by the Potters’ opening fixtures – Mark Hughes’ side play host to (AVL, LEI, NEW, SWA, WHM, BUR) in the first 12 Gameweeks in a run that pits them against just three of last season’s top eight over that period.

Certainly, there’s no questioning Bojan’s form and, as the highlights against Schalke,Blackburn and Betis show, his strikes have been far more than mere tap-ins. The main downside is the poor away form that saw Hughes’ side scored just 18 times on their travels last season; many owners may be persuaded to rotate the Spaniard on the road unless he can inspire a turnaround in fortunes.

After the game, Hughes was understandably enthused by the 24-year-old’s display and reckons he’ll become more influential as the months progress:

“He’s a good player, but we knew that when we were trying to bring him here in the summer. He has grabbed the headlines again and rightly so because he put in another really good performance and capped it off with another superbly taken goal. We can probably exploit his abilities in an even better way, but I am sure that will happen the more we play him and the more the other lads and him become accustomed to what they are each trying to do. It is still early days with him and there is a lot of work to be done yet, but from what we have seen so far we are really encouraged because he has come in and made a good impression on everybody here at the club.”

In terms of team selection, Hughes continues to ease Geoff Cameron and Peter Odemwingie into action after both featured in the summer World Cup. After handing the duo their first taste of action at the weekend, the Potters boss threw the pair on after the break and while Cameron (at 4.5 in FPL) may yet nail down the right-back berth in the long run, Bardsley seems to be in the driving seat after featuring throughout pre-season. Hughes’ decision to pair Ryan Shawcross with Marc Wilson at centre-half was somewhat surprising – Robert Huth was afforded just six minutes off the bench, coming on as a late sub for the injured Marc Muniesa.

McGeady Nets in Toffees Loss
It’s four summer friendlies without a win for the Toffees after last night’s 3-1 home loss to Celta Vigo. At the back, Roberto Martinez was without Seamus Coleman due to a hamstring problem once again, while the Toffees boss chose to rest Phil Jagielka, affording John Stones the chance to partner Sylvain Distin in central defence. Furthermore, with both Leighton Baines and Tim Howard fielded for 45 minutes apiece, it’s fair to say the Merseysiders’ backline was far from full strength last night. Further up the field, Martinez continued with Steven Naismith as the lone striker, though Romelu Lukaku is expected to join the action next weekend in the final summer friendly against SC Paderborn, while Ross Barkley hit the woodwork in his first full 90 minutes of the summer.

A disappointing result, then, though Martinez’ under-strength backline goes some way to explaining the capitulation – nonetheless, Everton’s form is a little disconcerting ahead of games against Arsenal, Chelsea, Palace, Liverpool and United in the opening seven fixtures.

After the game, the Toffees boss explained why he chose to rest Jagielka and Steven Pienaar for the loss:

“Phil and Stevie were involved on Sunday at Goodison and it was always the plan to work through the week and make sure they are ready for the game in Germany [against SC Paderborn] on Saturday.”

    My defence is £34m

    Krul/Foster
    Shaw/Ward/B. Davies/Chester/Cameron

Any way of cutting that down to £33.5m or even £33m?

Say what you like, but two of the main bandwagons right now, Young and Bojan, are reverse OOP.

Young, if he starts, will play as a wing back. He will get forward, but you can get Shaw, classed as a defender, for only .5M more in the same position (granted, I don't fancy either). He will get forward sometimes, but in the league they won't score 7 goals a game, and the goals will likely come from Rooney, RvP and Mata.

Bojan, I cannot believe. He is classed as a striker, playing as a midfielder. He plays for Stoke, who don't score many. He isn't guaranteed game time, and he has been hyped up in the past and has never lived up to it.

Best of luck to you all with either in your teams...

I was congratulating him on picking a player doomed to fail who is now popular. He should do well for a couple of weeks, but not much after that. That was the point I was making.

Firstly, why congratulate him for picking a player who is doomed to fail in your opinion? That doesn't make any sense.

Secondly, If you think he is doomed to fail in your opinion, why then do you think he will do well for the first couple of weeks and not after that?

Finally. if he does well in those first couple of weeks will LVG think to himself. " Ashley Young is playing well for us, I think I'll now take him out of the team"

None of this makes any sense at all. All I know is that he is £5.5, plays for United, is getting a chance to prove himself and seems to be taking it. Worth the risk as far as I am concerned. P.S. As for people being delusional, they are probably thinking along similar lines to the reasons I have just mentioned. makes perfect sense to me... 🙂

Who cares if Bojan is playing as mid.
He still seems the best attacking option for that price.
I prefer him over Siggy or Henderson or Shelvey..

        For me it's either
        9m mid + Bojan or 8.5m forward + Siggy/Henderson.
        I prefer the first option..

Agree with the Young point but given Bojans price and involvment in pre-season goals, he's worth having as the rest of the team can strengthened.
Stoke got much better towards the end of the season for scoring and have only added to the potential.

Both are 5.5, best "fillers" for now. Rather have Young/Bojan for 1 more than Albrighton/Zamora.

If not good for the long run, Young should be a great choice for the start at least. Even though he is reverse OOP, he is very attacking and involved in many chances. Most importantly, he is in serious crazy form, and form is everything in FPL.

Don't know if you have watched the games, but Bojan has been pure class so far. Best cheapie by far as it looks for now, and yet again, form!

I agree with this, in fact posted something very similar myself on young BUT there is a big difference between young and Bojan.

Young won't get the clean sheets from playing in a defensive position and at 5.5 would be a near premium defender. With Bojan being 5.5 but a striker that's very cheap even for a midfielder so putting him in frees up space, and if what keeps being mentioned is true and this is the year of the premium midfielders then that is a valid tactic.

Still agree with OOP but a mid playing in defence at a premium defenders price is a gel of a lot worse than a cheap striker who's still the price of a cheap mid.

He's currently in my side but am worried it will be hot air but plenty of tinkering still to do.

Why do people think Young is likely to benefit from Valencia's injury? Young is a left-sided wing back who will surely understudy Shaw. Presumably Jones will need to fill in at right-back if Rafael is not fit?

Why has nobody chosen Giroud? Is it due to Sanchez? Do people see Giroud as a decent option?

He is the number 1 striker at a top 4 club playing 433 with great players all around him, even if he is a donkey, he should pick up a few tap ins and assists?

3rd highest scoring forward in the game last year.. I'll take another 187 points this year from the donkey 😉

If Alexis works out and Giroud doesn't lose all sense of form again like he did last year, he'd be on track for over 200 points (if only last year is what we're going by) and he's only 8.5...

Or do you expect him to drop those levels and end up with less than 150?

Sure he's a valid option. not sure about those tap-ins though. The goals he actually scores are far from being tap-ins, and he's really mostly blamed for missing those tap-ins instead.

lacking match fitness atm - when out of form he is woeful, will take a bit of time to regain it

also, we have lots a tough fixtures at the start + cl qualies so rotation is a factor, not to mention he is allergic to big games

no go for the start of the season, but an interesting differential when he gets a nice run of easy fixtures + regains his form/fitness

The fact that Sanchez looked better up front, and Ox and Campbell looked good enough for the wide right position.

I can't see anyone but Giroud starting against Palace, but against Everton I wouldn't be too sure.

I cant see Sanogo playing. Even though he scored 4 goals, he missed a fair few chances and didn't look great. The game before that against Boreham Wood, he looked out of his depth... 😯

The problem is that I just don't know anymore who will play. Sanchez has never played up front on his own before, but Wenger has been trying it (even putting Akpom, who's a striker, on the wing with Sanchez up top).

When Sanchez played up top, Wenger said he looked much better there, and he also said that Ox changed the game when he played.

So when you consider that presumably Theo is in the first choice plans, and Wenger's comments about Sanchez, that the minutes could be shared up top between Giroud and Sanchez. And frankly, if Giroud isn't nailed on for 90mins every week, he isn't really worth getting. Ramsey and Ozil should benefit as much from by line crosses as Giroud will.

I probably feel you get more extra value if you spend the extra money in midfield instead than up front at the moment, although I'm not sure.

I think there is a bigger difference in quality between, say, Siggy and Albrighton than between Austin and Zamora. Since you're not really hoping to play the 4.5m player anyway you might as well get the better starter.

If we can't find any 4.5m striker who has any chance of starting this probably becomes void as we need someone to fill in eventually.

That's the problem though... There is no 4.5 striker that will even get regular minutes, not to mention attacking returns, at least the 4.5 mids will play 🙁

I agree with you though, there is an abundance of value in midfield, there's only a handful of value forwards.

Lukas Jutkiewicz should be the best option for 5m. Should start the first few months of the season nailed on with Burnley's injuries, will probably play as a 10 but can play as a 9, and is low ownership at around 0.2% so shouldn't drop in price. And he has scored a fair few in preseason.

I might do this. When you plan for so long, it's easy to build up loyalties to certain players that you picked early on, and then even if they start to emerge as maybe not the best possible pick closer to the start of the season, you kind of want to keep them. I might just start from a blank canvas again.

Sigurdsson's bench points and Bojan's consistent 1 or 2 is really gonna frustrate you.

I was chatting to a girl last night in the freezer aisle and she said to forget Bojan and just go with an Austin/Puncheon combo for the first few weeks.

Bonkers to go with a frontline of Rooney, Bojan and Austin even if it gives me a mid of Sanchez, Mata, Yaya and Fab?

Yes. If Aguero maintains his fitness Yaya will not be close to repeating last season's exploits. Too pricey in that case. Will Sanchez outperform Ramsey? Will he play upfront or on the wing? Will Fabregas play in the hole? You don't have any striker to fall back on if these things don't pan out as you think.

I would replace Yaya with a cheaper option. and upgrade a striker.

I have Bojan. Don't ignore Jovetic, though, while Negredo is crocked.
