Scout Scribbles – Wednesday Friendlies Round Up

Bojan Krkic scores for the third successive match as Stoke brush aside Real Betis at the Britannia. Elsewhere, Everton winless summer continues with a 3-1 home defeat at the hands of Celta Vigo, with Aiden McGeady grabbing the Toffees’ only goal:

Bojan Strikes Again for Potters
Stoke’s summer signing from Barcelona continued his excellent pre-season form by scoring for the third time in as many appearances last night. Bojan was fielded on the right of a 4-2-3-1 formation against Real Betis, with Stephen Ireland behind lone forward Mame Biram Diouf and Marko Arnautovic on the left – the new boy also played a part in the hosts’ first in a 2-0 triumph after playing in Phil Bardsley, who provided the assist for fellow full-back Erik Pieters.

Available for 5.5 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Bojan’s ownership has noticeably risen over the last few days as Fantasy managers take advantage of his budget price tag. Now sitting in over 10% of FPL teams, the Spaniard is the ninth most popular frontman thus far and the bandwagon is certainly backed by the Potters’ opening fixtures – Mark Hughes’ side play host to (AVL, LEI, NEW, SWA, WHM, BUR) in the first 12 Gameweeks in a run that pits them against just three of last season’s top eight over that period.

Certainly, there’s no questioning Bojan’s form and, as the highlights against Schalke,Blackburn and Betis show, his strikes have been far more than mere tap-ins. The main downside is the poor away form that saw Hughes’ side scored just 18 times on their travels last season; many owners may be persuaded to rotate the Spaniard on the road unless he can inspire a turnaround in fortunes.

After the game, Hughes was understandably enthused by the 24-year-old’s display and reckons he’ll become more influential as the months progress:

“He’s a good player, but we knew that when we were trying to bring him here in the summer. He has grabbed the headlines again and rightly so because he put in another really good performance and capped it off with another superbly taken goal. We can probably exploit his abilities in an even better way, but I am sure that will happen the more we play him and the more the other lads and him become accustomed to what they are each trying to do. It is still early days with him and there is a lot of work to be done yet, but from what we have seen so far we are really encouraged because he has come in and made a good impression on everybody here at the club.”

In terms of team selection, Hughes continues to ease Geoff Cameron and Peter Odemwingie into action after both featured in the summer World Cup. After handing the duo their first taste of action at the weekend, the Potters boss threw the pair on after the break and while Cameron (at 4.5 in FPL) may yet nail down the right-back berth in the long run, Bardsley seems to be in the driving seat after featuring throughout pre-season. Hughes’ decision to pair Ryan Shawcross with Marc Wilson at centre-half was somewhat surprising – Robert Huth was afforded just six minutes off the bench, coming on as a late sub for the injured Marc Muniesa.

McGeady Nets in Toffees Loss
It’s four summer friendlies without a win for the Toffees after last night’s 3-1 home loss to Celta Vigo. At the back, Roberto Martinez was without Seamus Coleman due to a hamstring problem once again, while the Toffees boss chose to rest Phil Jagielka, affording John Stones the chance to partner Sylvain Distin in central defence. Furthermore, with both Leighton Baines and Tim Howard fielded for 45 minutes apiece, it’s fair to say the Merseysiders’ backline was far from full strength last night. Further up the field, Martinez continued with Steven Naismith as the lone striker, though Romelu Lukaku is expected to join the action next weekend in the final summer friendly against SC Paderborn, while Ross Barkley hit the woodwork in his first full 90 minutes of the summer.

A disappointing result, then, though Martinez’ under-strength backline goes some way to explaining the capitulation – nonetheless, Everton’s form is a little disconcerting ahead of games against Arsenal, Chelsea, Palace, Liverpool and United in the opening seven fixtures.

After the game, the Toffees boss explained why he chose to rest Jagielka and Steven Pienaar for the loss:

“Phil and Stevie were involved on Sunday at Goodison and it was always the plan to work through the week and make sure they are ready for the game in Germany [against SC Paderborn] on Saturday.”

He's a much better player than Bardsley, but unless he can get some minutes in CB or CDM as well as RB then I don't see him playing every game, Bardsley could definitely steal some minutes off him at right back if Hughes sees fit, no matter how disastrous a decision that may be 😛

Yeah, that could be it. But I hear the Swans are in for Fernandez (of Argentina WC fame). Can't see that actually happening but it signals their intent to replace Chico with quality rather than give Bartley a chance. I've heard Swans fans saying he reached his level in the Championship.

So with some minor (serious) tinkering over the past couple of days this is what I have got my team to. ~dictates subs
De Gea ~Pantilimon (Pre-season makes him look more likely to be first choice then Mannone)

Terry – Kompany – Debuchy ~ N. Taylor ~ Jose Enrique (bit of a gamble if Liverpool sign a LB but could be worth the gamble have 0.5m to change for Johnson of Lovren if they get game time anyway and taylor looks first choice for 4.5m in a Swansea defence that should do better then last year)

Barkely – Eriksen – Tadic – Mata ~ Sigurdsson (Erik, Tadic, Mata, Sig are all possibility of taking set pieces so could pick up a good couple assists and goals that way)

Costa – Jovetic – Bojan (if Jovetic doesn’t play I plan to switch him out and with some forwards like Remy, Pelle and Riviere all being cheaper would allow for some money to be spend in other areas, Bojan a little bit of a gamble but has done very well in pre-season 3 goals in 4 games average of 1 every 80mins and have 3/5 of all stokes goals)

Very interesting team, a few good punts and it's definitely not the template team!

In my opinion you don't need a second playing GK if you have DDG, just get a 4.0 and upgrade elsewhere.
Also look at Barkley's horrible fixtures.

Ye but when looknig at Barkely out of the first 8 game weeks he is 4 poor ones which he would sit a sub and the rotation in the 5 mids I have ca come in to effect. Until week 6 I would say that 4 would be in my first team out of fixtures. and by week 6 it gives me a good time to see who can come in to replace anyone who might not be performing.

I an not just going to throw money in one area of the park, I feel this is more balanced and allows a greater rotation.

I understand what you mean about needing a replacement for De Gea that could be some were i look to get an extra 0.5m or so

The Stoke player who is intriguing me is Stephen Ireland at £5.0m. Very good pre-season and Stoke fans would like to see him in the number 10 position.

Trouble is that Stoke now have too many options in that area.

Ireland has genuinely had a very good pre-season for Stoke.

Not saying I'm going to pick him, but Hughes seems to have a trick with motivating written-off mavericks such as Arnautović (who is overpriced) and Krkić.

Hmm maybe, but it would need a hell of a miracle to see him nail down a spot in that side now, a great player for a year or two in his prime until he had a breakdown and lost the plot entirely..

Seems to be getting a bit of sense back recently so it doesn't surprise me he's having a good pre-season, but he's definitely a wait and see at the most, even if he is motivated.

What would people say about this defence:

    Krul - Mannone/Pantilimon

    Luis - Debuchy - Trippier - Clyne - Chester

My current thinking is to utilise the NEW/SUN rotation in defence, as opposed to in goal. Coloccini and a SUN defender would cost the same as the current GKs. Doing this would guarantee game time amongst cheap defenders and allow another rotation in goal, say WBA/AVL.

    Thoughts?

Nice. I think a cheap rotating defence with one good defender to start with is a viable strategy allowing you to get on board upfield bandwagons more easily. You can then draft in form defenders once the dust settles.

I would love to have my hand forced to get Bony. But if he moves to Spurs, what happens? Ade and Soldado surely wouldn't become second and third choice from GW1, would they? Not to mention Harry Kane.

I feel like a move to Spurs could almost kill Wilf's FPL appeal.

I'm not sure. Could see Loldado going out on loan or something like that for the season, Ade has his consistency issues. Kane is the only fly in the ointment but he's young enough to see significant bench time still.

My thinking would be if Bony goes, he stays.

I fear you're right. The problem is that he's a CF only. A very athletically gifted one but absolutely not a playmaker of any kind. And that really restricts his market for a new club.

Come on, Loldado is out the team as fast as they can get a really good striker, which is either when they sign Bony or someone else, or when Adebayor is fully fit after malaria. As long as that malaria keeps Ade weak, Bony will be nailed-on starter upfront, day-in, day-out.

drop Giroud he'll be used more sparingly this season with Sanchez up front at times. Sturridge won't be as effective as last season and is injury prone aswell. I'd change the forward line completely. zamora will hardly ever feature if he's ever need for your team.

Could change Sturridge for Rooney and Giroud for Lukaku or dzeko or Bony and use the extra to have Toure instead of sanchez as Wenger has said Sanchez won't be playing every match this season

        maybe

      Would he even start though?

He can only play centrally, and he isn't better than Evans..

So unless Evans can play as a wider centre back, which I think Smalling is actually more capable, he would seem like a back up to me.

          😯 Really!!?

There is a big difference between crowding the box for a crap team and playing for Man U. Just look at how Kalas was made to look like a world beater just by parking the bus.

      Pochettino said:

“Ben Davies is important for us because he’s good competition for Danny Rose on the left side,”

The wording of that suggests to me that Rose is in the driving seat, but Poch wanted to spur him on a bit with some competition. Could be a second language thing though.

Yeah, it's tough. There will be a nailed on 5m entry to a Pochettino defence, whether it's Rose, Davies, Dawson or even Kaboul. But there's no way of knowing who it will be.

(this is the source BTW: http://www.theguardian.com/football/2014/jul/31/danny-rose-new-five-year-contract-tottenham-hotspur )

Does anybody know where I can get some stats for the Sky game?

A list of players points for last year as a start but ideally a list with Points per Game, Points per minute etc.

I don't know much about this Bojan guy, but how come he's only priced at 5.5 when he's played (and started) for Barcelona, Roma, A.C Milan, and Ajax?

And more importantly...why does he play for Stoke? :S

These 4.0M defenders are really giving me a head acre.

I had Moore from the 1st draft as always rated him, but didn't look like many other 4.0M options had a chance.

Now we have Hutton, Duff, Wisdom all looking as likely to start as Luis is, although not as likely to keep 20 clean sheets a season granted.

Anyone else toying with ultra budget defense?

2 Weeks ago I would have said going for 2 x 4.0m defenders is FF suicide.

Now I'm thinking I'd be stupid not to go with 3 x 4.0m

            Moore - Hutton - Rosenior - Evans - Lovren
