The Digest – Gameweek 1

Our final look at the opening Gameweek of the season casts an eye over Chelsea’s attacking impetus after last night’s demolition of Burnley. Swansea’s in-form playmaker is much in-demand as the fixtures turn kind whilst United’s dismal opening day defeat has already sparked an exodus as Fantasy managers take stock.

The Player

Gylfi Sigurdsson spoiled the opening day party at Old Trafford to spark the first major bandwagon of the 2014/15 campaign. Prior to the United clash, we were concerned over a move to the right flank in Swansea’s final friendly, whilst the form of Bojan Krkic had many eyeing up a home/away rotation pairing to avoid the so-called tougher fixtures.

Sigurdsson’s goal and assist, allied with maximum bonus, underlines just how deadly he can be when fielded in his preferred position. Having struggled to find his form at Spurs, a return to the Liberty – where he averaged 5.7 points per game for the Swans in 2011/12 – has immediately reinvigorated his Fantasy prospects.

Moving up to 6.1 in price in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, Sigurdsson is poised to rise again before the weekend deadline arrives, but even then, that cost looks a bargain when you analyse his fixtures. Buoyed by their 2-1 triumph against United, Garry Monk’s side now face four home showdowns in the next six Gameweeks, as Burnley, West Brom, Southampton and Newcastle all roll up to the Liberty, and with a trip to Sunderland also included in that run, it’ll take nerves of steel to turn our backs on the playmaker right now.

The Team

Last season, Chelsea’s problems in the final third cost them dearly. Jose Mourinho’s side finished just four points behind champions City despite scoring over 30 goals fewer than their title rivals but last night’s display at Burnley suggests the Blues’ summer signings could be the final pieces of the jigsaw.

With Cesc Fabregas dictating play in the centre of the park and Diego Costa’s predatory instincts already in evidence, Chelsea were in cruise control despite an ineffectual display from Eden Hazard. Mourinho’s decision to hand Andre Schurrle the right-wing berth also paid off as the German slotted home an outstanding team goal – as we mentioned in this morning’s Scout Notes, Schurrle, at 7.5, had a better minutes-per-goal record than any team-mate last term, and if he can steer clear of his manager’s rotation, seems an enticing midfield prospect.

The form of their attackers is likely to keep the spotlight away from Mourinho’s backline right now. A defence that delivered 18 shut-outs in the season gone by looks primed for investment, but the arrival of Filipe Luis places question marks over the likelihood of rotation at the back. For now, home clashes with Leicester, Swansea and Villa in the next five Gameweeks should keep the focus on Fabregas and co further up the field whilst we look for signs of consistency of selection amongst Mourinho’s illustrious backline.

The Talking Point

You can’t say he didn’t warn us. Swansea’s win over United may have caused shock waves around the Premier League but it was perhaps no real surprise to Louis van Gaal – only last month the Dutchman admitted that “every club where I have been, I’ve struggled for the first three months”.

United were heavily backed across the Fantasy games heading into the opener with the Swans after a 100% record over the summer, including a 3-1 win over Liverpool. With injuries hitting hard, though, Van Gaal’s patched-up first-team look far from the finished product and Fantasy managers are already having second thoughts. Juan Mata is second only to the injured Ross Barkley for transfers out this week, with many trading out the Spaniard after a number of similarly priced alternatives such as the afore-mentioned Fabregas, Aaron Ramsey, Raheem Sterling and David Silva all delivered.

With Wayne Rooney residing in almost 50% of teams, it’s perhaps understandable that a double-up doesn’t appeal to many, though the fixtures are still very much in United’s favour. Van Gaal’s team face just one of last term’s top eight in the next seven matches but, as Saturday’s stumble suggests, they are struggling for the form to take advantage of such a run.

A change of formation during the Swansea defeat also indicates Van Gaal is still far from certain over his options at the moment, and with less than two weeks until the transfer deadline, the Red Devils boss is apparently set to invest heavily in alternatives to his current crop. Another couple of performances like last weekend’s and the same could easily be said for Fantasy managers.

Slightly above average performance with 59 points. A few things wrong with the team and not sure where I will need to adjust first. I did already make my FT though and just need advise on taking a -4 hit with my team. Here is the team that I fielded

    DDG
    Lovern, Vlaar, Debuchy
    Hazard, Siggy, Mata, Ramsey
    Rooney, Lukaku, Austin

Subs: Myhill, Luis, Davies, El Almandi

I had Luis starting with Siggy as my first sub (thank god Luis didn't play)

My FT was Austin--->Berahino hoping he can replicate form before moving to WBA or even better if he did Saturday's game :-P. I feel he may do better than any of the QPR strikers anyways.

So what do people think of a -4 hit? and who would the obvious cut be to warrant a -4 meaning he will repay more than I lost!?

How do I fix this mess...

    Cahill / Terry / Chambers / Moore / Duff

    Sterling > (Mata)FT / Ramsey / Davis / Young / Marney

    Rooney / Costa / Sturridge

Mata is dropping like a stone, so I used FT to get Sterling who I plan to keep long term.
0.5 ITB to possibly get Sturridge > Aguero - I planned to have 3 big hitters up front and this may have been a bad idea 🙁

Is this serious, should I call 911? I cant get Siggy as he has risen and looks now like Young is falling to pieces as well.

    Any help would be appreciated.

I wouuld not warrant a WC but actually a slight downgrade maybe in the striker department and that means you can get Young out and Siggy in. Leave it at that with a -4 and the following GW use your free transfer to take out Cahill OR Terry.. one is enough and you can upgrade davis or Marney

Based on, I suppose, Manyoo being moderately good & Sunderland being moderately bad [just conceded 2 vs WBA].

Fixtures are everything in this game & Manyoo, despite the Swansea cock-up, still have the best ones.

I'm not even considering transferring Mata out for now, though longer term I would rather have someone like a Sterling, probably.

Sunderland conceded 30 crosses in their last match. Leicester conceded around half that (17).

Umm, sorry but, wouldn't Leister's right flank be up against Everton's left back?

Leicester conceded 15 crosses from their right flank & that would make a lot more sense...

                            I thought the same thing.

                            It's counterintuitive on first glance.

You'd think Left Flank = Left Back but, we gotta remember it's mirrored.

Looking at the stats further Sunderland look fragile down the centre as well....could be a strong case for keeping Mata if he retains no 10 duties. Certainly adds to the case for Rooney (c).

How are people wildcarding already? Surely after only 1 match we know pretty much nothing new except that United defence is still crap?

Plus there are still transfers going to be coming into the big teams as we approach September so your team might not even be full of starters in 2 weeks...

We'll...historically more people transfer during this week. So theoretically more transfers = more price changes. And I'm sure in practice this is true but it doesn't really ever appear to be that significant. And transfers do grind to a halt in the middle weekend.

Gibbs is injured on one of my teams. I'm looking for a replacement. I'm thinking fonte, clyne, Curtis Davies.

Also Mutch hazard and coutinho have under performed for me. I know it's only one week but still.
            Some ideas
            Mutch trade for ward prose
Coutinho trade for tadic, eriksen, siiggy
            Hazard trade for schurlee, fabergas.

            My team now is
            Ward caulker kolorav
            Mutch hazard coutinho Nasri
            Sturridge costa giroud

Mutch is basically a cheap option, so you shouldn't be expecting consistent returns from him. He looked ok going forward GW1 so it's not worth wasting a FT on him at this stage especially for a player who hasn't actually done anything yet. It's the sort of move you'd make if you had 2 FTs and had no urgent changes to make.

Hazard could well go nuts and score a hattrick vs Leicester, no need to transfer him out. If you have to do something then replace Coutinho with Siggy.

As for Gibbs, I'd replace him with Clyne personally.

I'll change to Clyne on my 1st team.

As for Ward-Prowse he seems worth a lot more than 5.5. Plus Southhampton looks like a great team this year. I know its only been one game but I think that Ward Prose will get to Nasri/Silva results by the end of the year.

Errm let me try putting it another way.
How many more PPG would you expect for 1M extra? (Say Eriksen compared to Silva, or Roo compared to Sturridge)

Which means for each FT (4pts), you're looking to get around 6.25 more points over the season? So if you make a transfer considering 6GWs, the goal is for the new guy to get 1+PPG over the old guy?

*starts wondering why he asked the question*

Lol, yes I do play poker.

Here am just trying to objectively figure out if Mata->Cesc is worth it.
Cant rely on their stats or form - just one game afterall.

Simply put, if a FT is worth more than 0.3M in price at this stage, I'd stick with Mata. If not, roll with Fab.

                Hence the question 🙂

Great question. Hard to say for sure, and the link between price and points is quite uncertain, but I think the Djerbil framed it nicely.

Thanks. So going by that (1M=25pts), a FT(4pts) is worth 0.16M.
Surely that makes Mata->Cesc at this stage a GO?

Thoughts on my wc gw2 team. I wildcarded to change from 3-4-3 to 3-5-2

              Krul
              Ivanovic, Clyne, Chester
              Ramsey, Sterling, Fabregas, Siggy, Tadic
              Costa (c), Rooney

              Elliott, Naismith, Hutton, Moore

1.5 itb. This allows an easy switch to Aguero. I feel you can rotate all 4 of the big hitting forwards & play the 2 best each week.

I'm in the same boat. Got Dier in for Davies so getting fab would cost me 4pts.

Playing Sunderland away won't be easy for Man U, I can see them drawing or even losing, but Chelsea will beat Leicester for sure, Fab could really rack up the points.

So can we take a 4pt hit? We'll also be getting a player in fab that you'll keep all season whose never going to be cheaper. That's the question.
