Scout Report – Federico Fernandez

Swansea continued their shrewd business during the current transfer window by snapping up Argentine centre-back Federico Fernandez from Napoli. The 25-year-old, who is the club’s eighth summer signing, expressed his delight at being given an opportunity to play in the English top-flight.

“It has always been my dream to play in the Premier League – it is the best in the world – and I’m grateful to Swansea for giving me this opportunity. I saw a team that holds the ball and plays very good football. It caught my attention. I can identify myself with the Swansea style – I like to play the ball from the back and, of course, I love to defend too.”

THE HISTORY

Fernandez began his career at Argentina’s Primera Division side Estudiantes. He played twice in their run to the Copa Sudamericana final in 2008 – aged just 18 – but only cemented his place in the side when manager Alejandro Sabella, now head coach of the national team, arrived. Fernandez scored his first goal against Lanús in 2009, but was an unused substitute as Estudiantes won the Copa Libertadores final that year and signed with Napoli for €3million the following December.

Having netted two goals for Napoli, both headers, to add to his four goals at Estudiantes, the defender eventually struggled for playing time, and was loaned out to Getafe for the second half of last season, where he played 14 times and scored once.

Fernandez won the first of 26 international caps in 2011, but was not named in the Copa America squad later that year. Nevertheless, he became one of Argentina’s key centre-halves during the 2014 World Cup, playing 990 minutes in qualifying and starting every fixture until the quarter-final, when he lost his place to Martín Demichelis despite La Albiceleste winning every match with him in the side.

THE PROSPECTS

Fernandez is an imposing centre-back who reads the game well and can dominate both aerially and on the deck. He has professed his admiration for Swansea’s silky, pass-dependent style of football but although the stats suggest he is unlikely to light up Fantasy football with goals or assists, he could be an interesting route into a defence with excellent upcoming fixtures.

Immediate investment in Swansea clean sheets could be a wise move. A tough trip to Chelsea in Gameweek 4 aside, Garry Monk’s men have a generous opening fixture list with which to capitalise on their shock win at Old Trafford. In the next two weeks they have back-to-back home fixtures against Burnley and West Brom, and showdowns against Southampton, Sunderland, Stoke, Newcastle and Leicester complete the schedule until November.

Fernandez comes in at a price of 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League, matching Swansea’s most expensive defenders Angel Rangel and Ashley Williams. The Argentine’s arrival effectively kills off any hope of Kyle Bartley (4.0) making the team, ruling the latter out of contention as a budget backline contender. The move also spells disaster for owners of Jordi Amat (4.5), who looks set to lose his place as Monk attempts to improve upon a dubious defensive record that has seen the Swans register just two clean sheets in his 15 Premier League matches at the helm.

It also leaves an interesting prospect in Neil Taylor (4.5), who would now appear the cheapest route into the back line. The left-back’s pitch time could be worth monitoring, though; after being booked against United, he was replaced by Dwight Tiendalli (4.5) after just 52 minutes as Adnan Januzaj tormented him on the flank. Frustratingly, Monk has confirmed the club are still awaiting international clearance for Fernandez ahead of Saturday’s home clash with Burnley but the fixtures certainly suggest that, once available, he could be worth considering if his impact helps address the Swans defensive woes.

Newcastle looked very good going forward though.. expect both to concede. Caulker gets the edge for me cause of goal threat. expect him to hit 5 in this season.. it's the reason most of us got him. so might as well play him

I would just like to say I think Ronaldinho is the undisputed greatest player of all-time and it is a colossal shame that he never played in the Premier League. He was better than all of the greats, both past and present, in my opinion. He could (and still can, of course) do things with a football that no-one else could even dream of. And I believe he could still be among the best if he came to the Premier League today. Watching Ronaldinho was/is as orgasmic as it gets when it comes to football for me. It is a shame this man was not the most professionally-minded of players because we will never see another one like him. 🙁

          Pele

          Garrincha
          Zidane
          Ron1 (Brazil)
          Puskas
          Van Basten
          Beckenbauer
          Platini
          Muller (Gerd)
          Eusebio
          Charlton
          George Best
          Zico
          Moore
          Maldini

The top 3 would finish 1st second and third in most people's estimation - maybe with variation in the order. Ronaldinho was indeed a great player, but his star shone too briefly for inclusion in the above. Of course my list is very personal, but I suspect many would choose most of them for their own 20 - if in a different sequence.

Hmm. 26 year old Ronaldinho vs 34 year old Zidane World Cup 2006 Quarter Final match. I remember how Zidane just reminded Ronaldino he wasn't quite in the very elite level when even an ageing Zidane was still better than a prime Ronaldinho.

Having ridiculed Balotelli, I'd like to make amends by saying truthfully and honestly that Raheem Sterling is England's best talent since David Beckham and I wish Januzaj was anywhere near his level. Sterling oozes class and has improved his composure in front of goal superbly. He was our bright spot in a rather dismal World Cup. A shy and timid character that has the weight of expectation to make up for the loss of Suarez thrust upon his nimble shoulders. He has already shown signs that he has everything going for him to become a club icon and he will handle the pressure. What a player. Massive respect.

In afraid I disagree. Like all English footballers, he can't pass and has almost zero vision, compared with the Spanish and German players

He just reminds me of a young Walcott. All pace and no ability to control the game

Scholes was much much better than beckham too

Who here would opt for Mario in their team as a Liverpool option? With Sturridge in the team will he get be played? If he does I'd presume they will play two up front because one simply does not bench Sturridge. I would also presume he would come in at 10.0-10.5 which will put him in the same price bracket as Costa and Rooney. Am I the only one unsure of him? (Even though he is a tremendous player nonetheless)

But then, the comment about the womans "falsies", all guys say stuff like that to each other about hot women. I don't see why it is sexist. Sexism is more about judging someone based on whether they are male or female. All he done in that comment was infer she had a nice pair.

I think the LMA have pretty much confirmed that he did say those things which is disappointing.

With regards to my comment above, 90% was maybe an exaggeration but I reckon a lot of people have said comments in the heat of the moment or for what they perceive as banter. I could name very, very few of my friends, families, past co-workers, acquaintances etc that I have never heard make any sort of remark would be disrespectful to somebody out there.

I've had to fire a placement student and full time employee from my company before for saying things they thought were just "banter" which have offended others in the workplace.

The problem for Mackay is the repeated unpleasantness expressed in these texts. It's not a heat of the moment issue here - this is a bigot hoist by his own petard. I'm all for forgiving a one-off lapse of judgement but the pattern of his behaviour damns him.
