Scout Scribbles – Van Persie on Verge of Return

Robin van Persie could return for United’s trip to Sunderland. Mikel Arteta is ruled out of Arsenal’s visit to Arsenal. Robert Snodgrass is sidelined for six months with a knee injury, while Tottenham’s World Cup stars are in line to feature in the Europa League this evening:

United Hopeful on Van Persie

Following their underwhelming first day defeat to Swansea last weekend, Man United are set to receive a timely lift as Robin Van Persie prepares for a return to action. His World Cup efforts ensured that the striker failed to make an appearance in pre-season for United, and was subsequently unavailable last Saturday, but the Dutchman’s fitness is increasing day by day and he is now primed to turn out for the first time under former international coach Louis Van Gaal this Sunday against Sunderland.

The Scout Says: Regardless of whether or not both players come straight into the starting line-up on Sunday, the inclusion of Van Persie and the newly-acquired Marcus Rojo in the matchday squad will certainly offer United fans something to feel positive about at both ends of the pitch after their lacklustre performance against Swansea. Coming into the new season on the back of a World Cup campaign that saw him notch four goals and lead his side to third place in the competition, and linking up with a manager who has mentored him and placed faith in him at international level, many believe that if Van Persie is to ever return to his ‘essential’ ways, then the time is now. With Wayne Rooney currently the most popular player in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) with almost 50% ownership, Van Persie slides on to the radar as a major differential, with the forward’s substantial 12.5 price tag still liable to discourage many managers from finding a place for him in their squads. However, should Van Persie be back on penalty duties at Old Trafford, the knock-on effect from his return could impact Rooney’s output. Likewise, Juan Mata’s owners may already be fidgety after last week’s uninspiring display from the Spaniard, and they may well have more cause for concern with Van Persie now likely to reduce Mata’s portion of dead ball deliveries.

Arteta Ruled Out of Everton Trip

Arsene Wenger has this morning confirmed that Mikel Arteta is sidelined for the weekend trip to Everton after picking up an ankle injury against Besiktas in midweek. The Gunners boss went on to reveal he “will check” on the availability of German trio Per Mertesacker, Lukas Podolski and Mesut Ozil, having previously stated the World Cup winners “should be available”.

The Scout Says: The likely return of Ozil and Mertesacker will be music to the ears of Gunners fan after their somewhat lacklustre performance against Besiktas on Tuesday night. With Arteta out, there’s a chance Aaron Ramsey could drop deeper alongside Mathieu Flamini or Jack Wilshere if Ozil gets the nod in “the hole” behind the lone striker, while Callum Chambers’ owners will still be hopeful the youngster will retain his place after Wenger suggested a showdown with Romelu Lukaku “is a big test” for the youngster. The Arsenal boss also suggested that if Arteta’s injury is long-term, ”we have to be creative” – again, bearing in mind he has previously admitted he sees Chambers’ natural position as a defensive central midfielder, there’s hope that the summer signing from Southampton could yet have a prominent part to play this season.

SIX MONTH SNODGRASS ABSENCE CONFIRMED

After numerous scans and tests, Steve Bruce has revealed that summer signing Robert Snodgrass suffered a dislocated knee against QPR on Saturday and will be sidelined for six months.

The Scout Says: As mentioned in yesterday’s Scribbles, Snodgrass’ setback should see Tom Ince’s pitch time assured for the Tigers, and may provide Robbie Brady (available in FPL for 5.0) with the opportunity to nail down a role on the flank or in the hole behind the two forwards for the large part of the season. Bruce has, however, underlined his intention to find a replacement for the injured Snodgrass and the recently departed Shane Long before the transfer window closes, which could bring the starting roles of both Ince and Brady into jeopardy.

VERTONGHEN TO MAKE EUROPA RETURN

Jan Vertonghen has travelled to Cyprus for Tottenham’s Europa League fixture against AEL Limassol this evening. The defender missed his side’s opening day clash with West Ham on Saturday after Mauricio Pochettino declared him to be lacking fitness in wake of his World Cup assertions for Belgium. Moussa Dembele, Nacer Chadli and Paulinho are all also set to feature for Spurs tonight following their absences from the teamsheet last weekend, whilst the likes of Emmanuel Adebayor and Christian Eriksen have been left at home by Pochettino.

The Scout Says: Though Pochettino may have been quick to emphasise the importance of European football for his side this season, the fact that Adebayor and Eriksen have found themselves without a seat on the plane to Cyprus demonstrates that the Spurs boss won’t be risking the fitness of any of his players in favour of their Europa League duties. Good news for owners of the pair, then, who should be fully rested and prepared for the home encounter with QPR this Sunday lunchtime. The return of the 6.0-priced Vertonghen, meanwhile, is set to make things interesting in the North London side’s defence. With Kyle Naughton banned for this Gameweek, Eric Dier (who has already acquired over 95,000 since his goal scoring display last weekend) could be shifted to right back from the start against QPR, allowing Vertonghen to slot in alongside Younes Kaboul in the heart of defence. From Gameweek 3 onwards, however, Pochettino looks to have decision between Dier and Naughton for that role on the right, if Kyle Walker remains on the sidelines.

Altidore Accepts Sunderland Sub Role for Now

Despite a less than perfect first season with the Black Cats, and a World Cup that lasted only 20 minutes due a hamstring problem, Gus Poyet has asserted that Jozy Altidore has never been happier at the Stadium of Light than he is now:

“The idea is always to have options. We talk about Fletch (Steven Fletcher) and Connor (Wickham), but I can say that I’ve never seen Jozy as happy as now. I think last year, unfortunately for all of us, there were too many doubts because of the way we started. Now he knows where he’s standing, knows he’s started later and knows he cannot play 90 minutes right now. He knows the importance of maybe the last half-hour for us. He knows his role in the team for the next month.”

The Scout Says: A ten minute substitute performance against West Brom last weekend is indicative of what Altidore should expect for the near future as he builds up his match sharpness. Poyet’s words confirm that the US international won’t be edging ahead of Steven Fletcher or Connor Wickham in the pecking order anytime soon – indeed, with the latter fielded on the flank in recent matches, it seems Fletcher remains the preferred option for the lone forward position. The Black Cats face a mixed bag of fixtures in the coming weeks, with tough home encounters against Man United and Spurs sandwiched in-between trips to newly promoted clubs QPR and Burnley. Investment in any of their attacking options remains risky for now then, a belief evidenced by the fact that Wickham and Fletcher currently hold a combined ownership of under 3% in FPL.

Balotelli will still be a liability. As a Utd fan a hope he severely disrupts camp harmony and their chances of CL 😉

Will undoubtedly come in with his big-shot attitude, and assume he should start every game, which would make sense if he is willing to be paid less than his last stint in the PL

Very different form of " idiot-boy. Suarez however unacceptable were not of the continious nature and in fact his desire to win and play is the trigger for such events. Balotelli is a different animal. His misbehaviour extends of the pitch, and also his attidude on it from game to game can vary dramatically.

    Out of topic.

Bale's last season at spurs was better than his first season at madrid right ??.

Trying hard to convince a madrid fan. Those long range screamers, match winning gpals, and sheer consistency in almost carrying spurs to cl. Not to forget pfa poty and ypoty

No doubt he had a great season at madrid but still imo at spurs he was better.Think this season we'll see the best of him

90% of games in La Liga are very predictable though and there are teams that you can guarantee will be smashed almost every week. The top 3 will contain the same teams for years to come, at least in the PL there is some unpredictability.

That is an excruciatingly poor example.

                        For the following reasons.

                        1) Cameron has played nearly the most minutes of all of Stokes back line.
                        2) Bardsley was under two different mangers, a bit-part player at his previous club.
                        3) Sparkie has explicitly stated that Cameron was rested after a tough WC, and that he will be reintroduced soonest.
                        4) Cameron's stats last Season were much better than Bardsley's.

It is, however, my OPINION, that Cameron is a far superior player to Bardsley. That at least you can hold against me, if you wish.

I'm not trying to catch you out or hold anything against you - merely pointing out that the above statement was phrased as a fact when it is simply your opinion. Whatever means you've used to arrive at that opinion doesn't change that.

I could go and find other examples (Crouch ahead of Diouf in the Stoke pecking order, Demi's West Ham line up being way off the mark, etc.) but I don't think that serves anyone.

Right. I see. I stand corrected, and I apologise. I don't see it that way, but I still apologise.

I stated that it was MY Opinion that Crouch was ahead of Diouf, numerous times. I cited in evidence his Blackburn career, also under Sparkie.

Demi's West Ham line up WAS off the mark, WHEN I stated it. It then altered in three respects, crucially removing, Demel, which I had pointed out previous.

                        Sorry to go on.

Well, we'll agree to disagree and move on - I see a difference between an opinion drawn up based on facts and a fact. No need to revisit this I don't think.

(By the way, Hughes left Blackburn 2 years before Diouf arrived there 🙂 )

Doosra - "La Liga is just a charade. There are two-and-a-half excellent teams, and a load of dross."

Irish Madridista - "Sturridge is a selfish player."

OK. So, you would claim that La Liga is competitive?

Well, compare and contrast the results - results, mind - i.e. FACTS - of La Liga, with the Premiership, while the Premiership has been in existence.

I think you may surprise yourself.

There's a difference between saying a league is not competitive and saying it's a charade and full of dross.

There are at least 6 Spanish teams that would compete for a finish in the top 10 in England.

                      Madrid
                      Valencia
                      Barca
                      Atletico
                      Athletic Bilbao
                      Sevilla

you mean when arsenal & utd finished in the top two for about 7 yrs in a row? then when arsenal, chelsea, utd & liverpool finished in the top four every yr with it only changing when city came along & spurs made a slight improvement for one season? the prem may have been more more competitive over the yrs but not that much more.

I think it's the fact that Madrid and Barca are so much better than the rest that makes it uncompetitive. They're streets ahead of the best in the PL and I think the so called 2nd tier teams in spain are easily equivalent to the top 7 in the PL.

Being competitive is hardly the definition of quality in the league – look at the Championship, one of the most competitive leagues in the world...

exactly, I would argue that the 'competitiveness' of the PL is mostly down to the mediocrity of most of the teams.

Imo a Ryder cup of the leagues, 1st vs. 1st, 2nd vs. 2nd etc. would result in a La Liga win

the premier league has better quality teams other than the big 4 or 5, nothing like palace drawing with Liverpool after being 3-0 down or Chelsea losing to sunderland and so on would have happened in spain. In La Liga the big teams beat everyone else and whoever beats eachother in the big games will more than likely win the league.

Yes, I agree, but that is not only a result of better lower table teams, but also weaker top teams. Still La Liga is 2-and-a-half EXCEPTIONAL teams, a handful of great teams and then it tails off.

    My team :

    Speroni

    Terry Fonte Caulker

    Ramsey Fabregas Eriksen Mata

    Bojan Rooney Diego Costa

    Subs :

    Myhill Bruce Gardner(Villa) Dummett

I really need to get Sigurdsson in looking at his fixtures, but Mata also has good upcoming fixtures and Eriksen had a great end to last season don’t know whether to give him time.

Any other suggestions on changes I could make ?

Moody going is for the best. I wouldn't go as far as labelling our current situation as a crisis despite the uncertainty. Sky are even worse talking about this being our "Darkest Hour"

Being hours from our club going out of existence 4 years ago is allot more fitting for those analogies.

And if Arsene does see a future for him in CM then he's obviously going to be doing extensive training in that position to become accustomed to it and what it will require of him. He may well be a CM in future, but I think it will be a while before he's good enough there to be a starter. Barring necessity if they have no other options of course.

I will be watching him closely this week, both in terms of gametime and position etc. if he doesn't show up this week, he's gone sadly. Prob ship to get money for Sterling. Good luck.

Mario Balotelli. I don't have an opinion on him and I don't know what to think. Given the price and wages, it *may* be worth the risk. He's going to get my full support for now.

    Ramsey Fabregas Eriksen Mata

    Bojan Rooney Diego Costa

I really need to get Sigurdsson in looking at his fixtures, but Mata also has good upcoming fixtures and Eriksen had a great end to last season don’t know whether to give him time.

The flag just increases the number of transfers out needed to drop
Once removed, the price is frozen for several days (maybe ten)
Looking at his NTI per day I don't think he will come that close to dropping

As it seems confirmed, I reckon Balotelli at Liverpool will be a disaster. Rodgers doesn't have the shoulders to handle him (who has?), and tactically he will hinder the team's offensive flow by stopping the ball too much.
People who say the character issue is ok because there was Suarez before forget that Suarez is a way better football player than Mario.

It seems that Balotelli thinks of himself as a sort of Zlatan-type 9, who can drop back in midfield to orient the game, but he has nothing approximating the sense of the game that Zlatan has. I do think Balotelli is really good though, and I'd be curious to see him paired up front with Sturridge and Sterling in the hole, in a 4-3-1-2.
