The Numbers Game – Forward Thinking Full-Backs

As Branislav Ivanovic blazes a trail near the top of the defender rankings, it seems timely to put the position under further analysis by assessing the attacking potential of the Serb’s rivals. In this latest article for our members, we analyse the early-season data in an attempt to examine the cast of defenders offering the potential of returns at both ends of the pitch.

With Leighton Baines an ever present in such analysis, and new top flight arrivals Aaron Cresswell and Kieran Trippier receiving plenty of hype in pre-season, the attacking full-back shows great promise as a potential differential target.

This is compounded by this season’s changes to the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) bonus point system (BPS) calculation that has reduced the penalty handed out to players who raid forward to take on opponents. While it’s too early to confirm the impact of this change, it’s worth noting that four of the top five BPS scorers in defence are full-backs – right now, the dominant centre-back is not having it all his own way.

The starting point for our analysis was a custom stats table which captured a series of key indicators identified as important factors when assessing the attacking potential of a defender. We’ve chosen to sort our table by “Touches in the Final Third” in order to capture those defenders who have joined the attack most often. We’ve also included data that captures their effectiveness in terms of crossing and chances created, whilst also assessing Clearances, Blocks and Interceptions (CBI) as a means of further examining the bonus point potential of the listed candidates.

Our custom table has been made public and can be accessed here. The table will go on collecting data each week, offering a constant updated snapshot of our analysis. For now, however, let’s examine the data after the opening two Gameweeks.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Chelsea's #UCL group matches will each precede a major #BPL match. Man City(9/21), Arsenal(10/5), Man United(10/26) & Liverpool(11/8)

which means that there is a good chance of rotation in the succeeding matches

Yeah, i still think a weakened chelsea side can beat schalke. Luis/azpi as fullbacks, schurrle willian ramires is a 'weak' side

    2. Hit -4: Drop Costa > for any forward

*I'll wait for tomo's presser but just in case he gets announced out of game.

The S*n said Costa may be ruled out for 6 weeks, in that they said Chelsea played BARNSLEY and LEI....

The Telegraph said Costa is out for 6 weeks, but could play against Everton.

I'm actually amazed looking at that latest England squad, it seems to get progressively worse each year. Colback and Delph are the latest hits.
If you look back to 1996 when that young United crop were winning the premier league, barely any of them were even getting call ups and none apart from Neville went to euro 96... Scholes scored 10 goals in United's 95/96 title winning season but didnt make his international debut until 1997 while Beckham made his debut 3 months after Euro 96
Nowadays any old clown that shows so much as a small flash of form ends up earning 20-50 caps and it's been happening since Sven was coach e.g Aaron Lennon, SWP, Dyer, Agbonlahor, Andros Townsend, Jenas, Rodwell, Bentley, Parker, Crouch, Cleverley etc. Jermain Defoe earned the same amount of caps as Andy Cole, Matt Le Tissier and Ian Wright combined. The drop off in quality the past 15-20 years is astounding.

But to mirror what Katie said, years ago how many academy or youth team spots went to young English lads with the talent to develop? Now how many spots are going to foreign lads that may be more talented at that point in time?

Then look at the starting teams, how many English lads lose their place to foreign imports in the top teams? Unfortunately that's the price that is paid for having a league with a lot of foreign stars.

I'm not saying Colback or Delph are bad players, they're average imo. And they certainly wouldn't have had so much as a sniff of an England cap in the 90s.
I'd rate Tim Sherwood & Ray Parlour as far superior mids and they earned 3 and 10 caps respectively, had they been playing in this era they'd be nailed on in every game.

Obviously the removal of the 3 foreign players per club deal was the catalyst for the whole thing and the drop down to dreadful quality isn't exclusive to England just look at Ireland & Scotland compared to say, their 1990 teams.

Exactly, though as an Irishman I have to say we siphon off the rejects from England and Scotland's best prospects but you can certainly see the drop in quality.

I think it comes back to youth teams as well, look at some of the better youth prospects from the top clubs in recent years, plenty have been foreign (the likes of the Januzajs or the Pogbas) which I would wager have taken places from English lads.

Buying a defender based on attack alone is not wise imo, Liverpool need time to get the defence sorted before considering.

All have gone backwards, apart from DDG.

6-3 city, 5-1 Liverpool, 6-0 Chelsea... all last season. What was the excuse then? Arsenal are no strangers to a good thumping every so often. Utd beat them 6-1 & 6-2 before also. Disgraceful hidings for a "big team" to be ever taking.
