The Watchlist Updated – Gameweek 3

Our Watchlist rankings, which offer player recommendations over the next four to six Gameweeks, have been updated throughout the week. Sunderland and Newcastle are the main movers here as both prepare for some kind schedules, while at the other end of the scale, Villa’s upcoming fixtures and Palace’s shake-up since the departure of Tony Pulis ensures both clubs slide in our estimations.

On the Up

Our faith in Sunderland’s assets takes a turn for the better this week. Last Sunday’s home draw with United sets the Black Cats up nicely ahead of a run which sees them travel to promoted pair QPR and Burnley and play host to Swansea and Stoke in the next five. Vito Mannone looks to have nailed down the number one spot again, while the raiding runs of Patrick van Aanholt down the left have already served up an assist – you can snap up either for just 4.5.

In midfield, Seb Larsson has staked a claim for consideration in the sub 6.0 bracket. The Swede sits sixth in the midfield standings after a goal, assist and two bonus points and comes in at just 5.6, while Steven Fletcher, at 5.5, seems assured of starts as the lone forward if he can steer clear of injury.

Elsewhere in the north east, Tim Krul offers a fire-and-forget option between the posts as Newcastle host Palace, Hull and Leicester in the next five, though Paul Dummett comes in cheaper at 4.0 and seems to have nailed down the left-back berth, with Davide Santon out until November. Remy Cabella is our Magpies midfielder of choice, though we have one eye on Siem de Jong, who could be poised for a start against the Eagles.

Liverpool’s Simon Mignolet and Dejan Lovren edge tentatively up the rankings with improved fixtures to come. Granted, this week’s trip to Tottenham hardly bodes well for a shut-out, but beyond that, the Merseysiders’ have four home matches (AVL, EVE, WBA, HUL) allied with trips to West Ham and QPR in the subsequent six to boost their points potential at both ends of the pitch. Expect a further climb next week.

Spurs pair Jan Vertonghen and Nacer Chadli also come into contention after an impressive start under Mauricio Pochettino. The former looks the most secure route into a defence with back-to-back shut-outs so far, with today’s arrival of Federico Fazio placing further question marks over Eric Dier’s security of starts. Christian Eriksen still remains our Spurs midfielder of choice but Chadli’s brace against QPR, allied with a 6.0 cost compared to the Dane’s 8.0, offers a real alternative in the mid-price bracket.

Stevan Jovetic’s brace against Liverpool looks set to keep him in the first XI for the visit of Stoke, though Sergio Aguero would be placed higher here if we were convinced of his start against the Potters. Nonetheless, as his displays off the bench have shown, the Argentine needs little time to find the net. Expect Aguero to threaten top spot very soon.

Dropping Down

Palace and United stumble a little, though both clubs have the fixtures to pull through. The arrival of Neil Warnock places question marks over the Eagles’ ability to chalk up the clean sheets in a manner similar to last season under Tony Pulis, with Julian Speroni and Joel Ward’s stock on the decline as a result. Meanwhile, in midfield, Warnock’s very public spat with Jason Puncheon means that the jury’s very much out on whether the new manager’s arrival will benefit last season’s Fantasy favourite and he’s excluded from our thinking right now.

The midweek humbling by MK Dons underlines Louis van Gaal’s problems – without a clean sheet in any of their first two league encounters, David de Gea and Phil Jones have done little to justify their 5.5 price tags. The fixtures remain in their favour, however, with the three promoted sides to follow next: a factor which keeps the defensive pair in our Watchlist reckoning.

Villa’s Alan Hutton also slips down the rankings ahead of a very testing run of fixtures. Paul Lambert’s side have a favourable home encounter with Hull this weekend but, following that, face each of last season’s top five in the subsequent five Gameweeks – those looking for a 4.0 defender look best served by Dummett over the next few Gameweeks.

Chelsea’s Diego Costa had climbed to the summit of the forwards standings prior to last night’s reports of a potential hamstring injury. The club’s confirmation that he has a “minor problem” means he drops for now, then, until Jose Mourinho’s Friday press conference clarifies the matter.

Swansea’s Wilfried Bony also drops down in the forward rankings. Subbed off just after the hour mark last weekend, he’s looking under increased competition from Bafetimbi Gomis, who netted in the midweek cup win over Rotherham. Garry Monk has, however, confirmed he will occasionally play with a front two this term, suggesting both players will still fit into his plans.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Don't like Balotelli and Jones, would replace them with Adebayor and Dier/Clyne personally. Also, having to play either Cattermole or Naismith every week is not ideal. You should do Cattermole to Siggy, Mario to Ade and Jones to Clyne imo.

seriously though i do think there could be something in this. i've got this inner flairmonger dying to get out, like the angel and devil on each shoulder, the brain and the flairmonger heart. the longer i have to dwell on a decision the more time the devil gets to have its say. pre-season is an awful lot of time to dwell. december is normally my best point of the fantasy season as gameweeks come thick and fast and there's much less time to dwell on decisions. have also had success in limited transfer games in the past as you don't have the luxury to embrace te inner flairmonger

                  Spot on AB.

I try to avoid thinking too much about transfers. By the end of the Sunday games I'm pretty sure what I'm going to do. Just a case of deciding when to do it.

Wish all the GW were on 38 consecutive days then we could get the rest of the year back 😀

ha. we should make a virtual 38 day season. putting seems a decent analogy. sometimes just walking up, having one look and hitting it is enough, rather than multiple looks and multiple practice swings, a few wiggles, a bum scratch, a sleeve tweak etc

Thinking of hanging on to Aguero until Friday (don't want to lose him unnecessarily!) but considering:

    Chambers --> Dummet
    Young --> Tadic
    Aguero --> Jovetic

    Worth it?

Looking at writing a new article for the community topics section - are there any players that people want to see mentioned or analyzed? and if so, who?

Here's some advice to everybody using the comments section to ask questions about who to pick etc:

    1. DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH

Take a look at upcoming fixtures, form etc and then think about those things independently, and make your OWN decisions, based on your own research.

    2. HAVE THE COURAGE OF YOUR CONVICTIONS

Don't just knee jerk players in and out because that's what everybody else is doing. After doing your own research, then make your own decisions - no need to come on here every 5 minutes to ask what everybody else thinks

    3. REMEMBER - IT'S A GAME

Yes that's right! What's the point of playing if you're asking everybody else what to do all the time?

So, in conclusion - enjoy yourselves and lets see an end to the endless 'should i get so and so' comments that make the comments section unreadable. Use the comments section to comment on the article that has been written - because that's what its for!

    Thanks guys!

It gets a bit much when people ask the same question: X or Y every few posts and it's not even a significant choice.

I have to concur.... Yes I'm aware this is a public forum site... But the endless, pointless posts (that you would get on any forilum/social media) becomes extremely tedious & boring....

People don't appreciate how good this site is, whether a paying member or not... & is just taken advantage of, which results in endless tripe, which in turn ends up with no real advice given at all...

Yes, we can pick out the genuine, proper questions/points, but the feed seems to be overridden with annoying posts that require no answer at all

It'd be a gamble, but I'd be tempted by Robertson, Hutton and van Aanholt.

Villa look a lot more solid defensively this season and have the confidence of 2 clean sheets so far this season.

That said, they don't seem to be able to buy a goal right now. That weakness in front of goal looks good for another 0-0 with Hull this weekend (hence Robertson).

Similarly with QPR, they have plenty of chances but can't hit the back of the net, so van Aanholt could look set for points at both ends of the pitch.

Obviously putting Ivanovic on the bench is a risk whoever the opposition, but I fancy Everton to score and you can never 'guarantee' a goal from a defender.

      Good Luck.

Costa and Giroud have to leave I guess. Stuck for replacement options though - everyone seems to have a question mark over them.

Tempted to go JT, Costa, Gru > Dummett, Ade, Kun for a hit.

leaning towards Costa>Ade and carry transfer at the moment - trying to avoid wildcarding early.

Captaining Aguero this week. Think he'll score more points than any other player in my team.

First time here, would like some opinions:

      Howard
      Debuchy - Wisdom - Clyne
      Fabregas - Ramsey (c) - Gylfi - Sterling
      Sturridge - Weimann - Rooney(vc)

      Gilks, Larsson, Smalling, Bruce

I've already made 2 free transfer for this gw, Filipe and Young out, Clyne and Seb in. 0,6 in the bank. 1gw 71 pts, 2gw 36 :/

        Nice team.

Howard is a bit of a luxury but he should pick up some cleanies soon.

Would prefer Naismith to Weiman also.

Why transfer someone in to put on the bench?

Was afraid of Young's price fall, and i don't really know who would I put on the bench instead of Seb. Weimann ?

      Please have suggestions,
      Krul
      PvA-----Cahill-----Dummett
      Hazard-----Tadic-----Ramsey-----Mata----Siggy
      Aguero-----Rooney

      Bench: Moore, Wisdom, Wood
Should I have mata out and Adebayor in?---->This opens up Lamela or Eriksen, should I have them over Tadic

Fletcher. I went to see the game against Man U and I thought that Cattermole was excellent along with both wingers. They were both very direct and fast, which is excellent for the type of striker fletcher is. I think we could be the dark horses this season, especially with new signing of Alvarez and hopefully Van Dijk.

      Jovetic of Aguero??

Aguero's minutes and injury-prone traits worry me

Does anyone else feel like 70% of their squad are dropping in price? I've yet to lose value on anyone but it won't be like that for long (lookin' at you, Eriksen). Seems like any player is a target for sales.

Never pay any attention to it, it's a result of your team not the purpose of it.

Maybe I'll hold fire then, hard to settle on a budget friendly 3rd striker, if Shane long was guaranteed a start I'd probably go for him

        http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/competitions/champions-league/11061282/Champions-League-draw-live.html

The Telegraph are reporting that CPL have signed Man Utd's Zaha on loan for the remainder of the season.

Good transfer for all parties imo. Especially now the capital one cup dream is over.

Young's last chance to do well for LVG and United this GW. Di Maria is about to steal his place.

Thinking of bringing him off my bench as a punty punt.
