Technical Area

The Technical Area – Analysing Balotelli’s First Liverpool Appearance

All eyes were on White Hart Lane last Sunday as Liverpool rolled up to face Tottenham with new boy Mario Balotelli on board for the first time. After tasting defeat at City in their previous match, Brendan Rodgers’ side returned to form in style, sweeping aside their previously unbeaten hosts with a 3-0 win which could easily have reaped further reward for the Reds’ Fantasy owners.

Balotelli may have failed to play a part in any of the Merseysiders’ three strikes, but after starting alongside Daniel Sturridge up front as Rodgers rolled out a midfield diamond, there’s hope he will retain his spot in the XI as the Reds brace themselves for a very kind run of fixtures.

involvement

As the average position map from the weekend encounter shows, Balotelli (number 45) found himself in possession in more withdrawn areas than strike partner Sturridge (number 15), with Raheem Sterling (number 13) almost on a par with the Italian at the tip of the midfield diamond.

Over his 61 minutes on the pitch, Balotelli produced a total of 38 touches, with 18 arriving in the final third. While this was fewer than Sturridge’s 26 and Sterling’s 23 in the attacking area, the new boy was just as involved overall as Sterling – an average of 1.6 minutes per touch equalled the youngster’s and was superior to Sturridge’s 2.6. The Liverpool players also sought out Balotelli at a quicker pace than his fellow forward – an average of 3.6 minutes per pass received was up on Sturridge’s 3.8 at the Lane.

When on the ball, the Italian international’s distribution left a lot to be desired, though. Balotelli made just eight successful passes over his time on the park – half the number of Sturridge (16) and also fewer than Sterling’s 11. A mere four accurate passes in the final third harbours back to the fact he produced just a single assist for City, though in a sense he can be forgiven, as this was his first match in Liverpool colours and he has yet to become accustomed to his team-mates. Indeed, an 80.6% pass accuracy for City in 2012/13 suggests he’ll soon improve upon a lowly 50% success rate.

In terms of goal threat, Balotelli registered some very impressive stats against Spurs. Despite playing 61 minutes to Sturridge’s 94, he registered double the number of touches in the box (four to two) and equalled his fellow forward’s five attempts on goal.

Crucially, though, four of Balotelli’s attempts arrived inside the area – essentially, he fired an effort with every touch in the penalty box – while Sturridge managed just two close-range attempts in their first appearance as a partnership. Sterling’s three efforts inside the box took his total to six close-range shots for the season – more than any other midfielder – and underlines just why many feel he’s near essential for the upcoming schedule.

Even when it came to work-rate, there was promise. After the match, Brendan Rodgers suggested that handing Balotelli more responsibility will bring out his best performances and, encouragingly for the Reds boss, the new signing challenged for four aerial duels – more than any other Liverpool player at the Lane and significantly up on his average of 1.7 in his final season at the Etihad. Defensively, his four recoveries and three clearances were also way better than his City 2012/13 stats (1.4 and 0.4 respectively) and also hints that he may well be prepared to buy into the Merseysiders’ team ethic; certainly, the numbers back up the fact that – as many onlookers noted – there was no standing around or posturing as the play went on around him.

Granted, 61 minutes is far from enough of a sample size to make any assumptions but Balotelli’s first match in a Reds shirt was encouraging both from a Liverpool and Fantasy perspective. At 10.0 to Sturridge’s 11.5 in the Fantasy Premier League game, though, there was certainly enough on offer from the new boy to indicate he may well be capable of rivalling his team-mate for both goals and our Fantasy affections over the upcoming run of fixtures.

right then, Ramsey, Gerrard or Silva for next 5 or 6 gw's? I thought Rambo was a season keeper but those pool fixtures are sweet and surely will be a few pens chucked in.

Gettting rid for Gerrard or Silva would be madness.

    Jovetic situation: thnx

1.keep (as he will start and have more gametime than dzeko alongsise Aguero + Aguero will create opportunities for him)
    2.> Naismith 5.4

    4.> welbeck 6.9,

This is my team, I'm relatively happy with it but what do you think?

    Krul Foster
    Terry Chester Naylor PvA Rio
    Hazard Ramsey Sterling Siggy Henderson
    Costa Rooney Naismith

    0.9 in the bank
    1 FT

Was thinking of getting rid of a Chelsea player before their tough fixtures and maybe getting a Liverpool player too. Any other moves you would do?

    Thoughts?

    Cheers 🙂

I opted for Matic at 5.5m myself, a swap for Young.

The Henderson argument is fuelled by a comment made by Rogers that he expects Henderson to get forward more and score ten goals this season. I just compared both players in the members area and Henderson certainly has the edge on influence and creativity - much stronger.

I think Matic, being so different to the rest of Chelsea midfield, is nailed on . He's my 5th midfielder so I am very happy with a regular Chelsea player at that price.

(although I wish I'd used the members area before I made the transfer - it's very useful, huh?!)

Rooney may be over 100% in totatfpl, but is only about 50% in the other websites that monitor price drop. Is there a possiblity that Rooney may never drop till the start of GW4?

    1. Walsh
      • Fantasy Football Scout Member

Possible, sure. With this alleged new rule about wild card transfers not impacting the numbers he may well stick. All told, a .1 drop before GW4 would hardly be the worst thing in the world.

The wildcard thing is probably what's clouding totalfpl's results because I'd imagine a lot are going Rooney to Falcao but are activating a wildcard while they do it which doesn't count towards price changes

Is anyone attempting Costa, aguero, sturridge up top?

I can do it but means I have to get rid of Ramsey. And I'm not actually entirely against that.

    Currently considering

    Krul, Elliot
    Ivan, PVA, Robertson, williamson, Hutton
    Sterling, tadic, chadli, siggy, marney
    Aguero, sturridge, Costa

    1. Cars and Mané

Guess it boils down to sturridge plus tadic or ramsey plus balotelli... I think the former looks better, but Ramsey has the potential to screw me.

      1. Derbz87
        • 9 Years

The midfield looks nice but at the same time doesn't shout WOW at me - the inclusion of Tadic and Chadli are OK but they aren't Hazard/Fab and as you've mentioned Ramsey is an obvious omission. This is obviously the sacrifice you have to make to accommodate that front 3 I'm just not convinced the scoring difference between premium mids and premium strikers makes it worth it although this will probably change in the long run

          I think it is.

Hazard has been very uninvolved so far this season. Fab doesn't impress me - too deep in most games.

          Its just Ramsey...

Basically my thinking is that the mid priced midfielder are better value than the mid priced strikers. Yet to be convinced that isn't the case. And I think the expensive strikers will do very well.

I tried a Costa, Aguero and Falcao combo which is cheaper and hits all bases if you have Sterling in the mid.
Settled on a Costa, Aguero and Welbeck combo with a big hitting midfield and defence instead. Much more balanced imo

I'm pretty happy with the defence as is. I think aguero and Costa are definitely going to be in my team. Sturridge with those fixtures is dangerous not to have.

So it's just whether I'm happy with the damage done to my midfield. I think I am. Fortunately I have over a week to dwell on this...

Finally have sorted my WC team. What do you think lads?

    Krul (Gilks)
    Ivanovic, Moreno, Pieters (Wisdom, Wasilewski)
Sterling, Fabregas, Di Maria, Ward-Prowse (Boyd)
    Welbeck, Aguero, Diego Costa

Think its pretty solid! Big hitting 6 in midfield and up top and JWP has been impressive on the left of Saints' attack. Ivan, Moreno and Pieters give a solid defence and Newcastle have some decent fixtures with Krul. Think I've nailed it!

He's playing the left side up top of a 4-3-3 and has set pieces. Will definitely nab assists and goals. Cant bring myself to drop anyone to upgrade to Henderson though. Could do Di Maria to Silva/Nasri and then Moreno to a 5.0?

Could go for Falcao and then move JWP up to Hendo. Although then I'd have no Man City which means ADM for Silva.

Its basically ADM & Aguero or Silva & Falcao.

I didn't see the game but some folk are claiming Balotelli should have had a hat trick. Does "should have" suggest poor finishing? Or was he just unlucky?

    1. Venom Snake

well yes, but 2 point blank headers and 1 10000% chance with keeper not in goal, but he should have passed that anyway

    2. Derbz87
      • 9 Years
      9 years, 8 months ago

Poor finishing but at the same time I'd be more worried if I had Sturridge over him that the chances fell to Balotelli in the first place

      1. Kostja
        • 12 Years
        9 years, 8 months ago

+1 Balo is so greedy, Sturridge only got the shots he created for himself and outside of the box most of the time with the ball

    3. Kostja
      • 12 Years
      9 years, 8 months ago

Really showed off his worst conversion rate in top 5 leagues, also ruined a chance for a 100% goal trying to shoot with one touch when the keeper was out of goal instead of passing it to Sturridge who had an empty net with only a defender in goal

My team (2nd by 5 pts):

    Krul - Myhill
    Cahill - Debuchy - Clyne - Dummett - Wisdom
Rambo - Hazard - Siggy - Sterling - El Ahmadi
    Costa - Studge - Bojan
