This Much We Know – Gameweek 4

With Hull and West Ham set to complete the Gameweek 4 action later this evening, we assess the lessons learned from the nine matches played out. Chelsea’s increasingly porous backline, Brendan Rodgers’ tinkering, Southampton’s form under Ronaldo Koeman, Tottenham’s in-form midfielder and United’s multitude of options all arrive on Monday’s lunchtime menu.

Pellegrini seems unconvinced by Dzeko again…
Having started 17 of City’s final 20 league matches in 2013/14, the Bosnian was instrumental in helping his side to the title but already it seems he’s far from certain to feature. Even with Alvaro Negredo farmed out on loan, Stevan Jovetic sidelined and Yaya Toure rested due to jet lag for the weekend trip to Arsenal, Manuel Pellegrini named the Bosnian as a sub – Dzeko has dropped to the bench to accommodate Sergio Aguero in each of the last two now, and despite last term’s heroics, it seems that – once again – his pitch time is anything but secure.

Chelsea’s attacking impetus comes at a cost..
A thrilling 4-2 win over the Swans maintained Chelsea’s swashbuckling start to the season. While Diego Costa and Cesc Fabregas run riot in the final third, Jose Mourinho’s backline continues to frustrate their owners and, Branislav Ivanovic’s attacking endeavours aside, there seems little point in eyeing up the Blues’ defence right now. Chelsea have conceded six goals in their first four matches – put into perspective, they afforded their opponents just seven strikes in the final 16 matches of 2013/14. With City, Arsenal and United in the next five, shut-outs seem unlikely.

So much for a St Mary’s crisis…
The doubters were circling after a summer exodus but the Saints’ comprehensive thrashing of Newcastle highlights the impact of new boss Ronald Koeman. After four rounds of fixtures, Southampton have the second most resilient defence and third most impressive attack, and the likes of Ryan Bertrand, Dusan Tadic and Graziano Pelle have the fixtures to flourish further, with the latter emerging as the stand-out candidate in the mid-price bracket right now.

Rodgers can’t afford to bench Sterling..
In seasons gone by, Liverpool could almost always rely on Luis Suarez to come to the rescue when the chips were down. With the Uruguayan legging it to Barcelona and Daniel Sturridge injured yet again, Brendan Rodgers’ side mustered just one shot on target in an insipid home display against Villa that saw them lose for the second time in four Gameweeks. The decision to rest Raheem Sterling will haunt his manager – given that Mario Balotelli could barely have looked less interested in the proceedings, it’s becoming clear that, if the Reds are to replicate last term’s second placed finish, the youngster has to be on board from the first whistle.

United are still a work in progress…
A change in system and the introduction of a handful of new signings helped Louis van Gaal’s side to their first win of the season but still there are more questions than answers regarding the Red Devils right now. Pre-match, the Dutchman conceded a host of injuries in defence was partly the reason for the tactical switch, whilst Radamel Falcao only warmed the bench as a result of jet lag. United certainly look to be finding their feet but we’re still far from certain over the Dutchman’s starting XI as we head towards Gameweek 5.

The Foxes and Clarets are made of stern stuff…
While Harry Redknapp’s QPR lick their wounds after a second mauling in three matches, the other two promoted sides are quietly finding their feet. Rolling up to the Britannia to face a Stoke side that had previously beaten City on their own patch, few gave Leicester a chance but Nigel Pearson’s side emerged with a win and clean sheet to take their record to one defeat in four. Having also held Everton and Arsenal, The Foxes are showing just why they topped the Championship last term, while runners-up Burnley have been equally resilient of late, with a goalless draw at Palace earning them a second successive clean sheet. At 4.0 apiece, Liam Moore and Michael Duff are becoming increasingly appealing in the budget bracket, with the latter now earning four bonus points in his last two appearances ahead of some kind upcoming fixtures.

…as are Villa…
One goal conceded in the first four fixtures underlines the remarkable turnaround in defensive fortunes for Paul Lambert’s side this season. The Midlands outfit shipped 61 goals last year – only the three relegated clubs afforded their opponents more – yet despite the absence of injured skipper Ron Vlaar, they were still able to repel the Merseysiders with a thoroughly disciplined display. With four of last term’s top five in the next four Gameweeks, though, Villa have stiffer tests to follow after Liverpool’s lacklustre display at Anfield.

Chadli could be Pochettino’s new Lallana…
The Belgian continues to thrive under his new manager after netting his third goal in as many matches. Pochettino’s arrival at Southampton sparked a turnaround in fortunes for both Adam Lallana and Jay Rodriguez before he legged it to the Lane this summer and so far Chadli seems the one player to have benefitted most from Spurs’ new style of play. While Christian Eriksen and Erik Lamela alternate on the right and through the middle, Chadli continues to rack up the points on the left of the attacking midfield three and is now level on points with Aaron Ramsey in the Fantasy Premier League game.

Warnock is a Mariappa fan…
The former Watford man has now started each of Palace’s last two matches since the arrival of Neil Warnock. With the new manager shifting Joel Ward back to the left of defence for the visit of Burnley, Mariappa retained his spot at right-back as the Eagles earned their first shut-out of the season. Granted, having shipped three goals at Newcastle in Gameweek 3, Palace’s backline is yet to convince us they are worthy of investment in the post-Pulis era, but if they can push on from Saturday’s clean sheet, they may yet find a place in our plans.

Finding it tough to make the right decision on who to bring in for Debuchy!

    A) Baines
    B) Louvren
    C) Clyne

  2. Will Fabregas leave Mourinho's bus door open?

Can Mourinho still shut up shop as effectively with Fabregas in the side? Chelsea's away trips to the league's best attacking sides all resulted in clean sheets last season. These are their midfield set ups from those games:

Midfield three at the Etihad: Luiz, Matic, Ramires

At the Emirates: Mikel, Ramires, Lampard

    At Anfield: Mikel, Matic, Lampard

Bear in mind that Lampard actually played a fairly disciplined, deep role for Chelsea last season, particularly in the big games, and it's clear that Fabregas is a more anarchic player than any of these other central midfield options.

Cesc is playing in a relatively deep role, of course, but I think it's revealing that Oscar didn't start in any of those matches, when he's arguably better than Cesc when it comes to winning back possession. Even in his current role, Fabregas will want to get forward, get on the ball and dominate proceedings.

I can't imagine him missing out at the weekend, so even if Ramires comes in for Oscar, as I expect he will, Luiz > Fabregas is quite a big shift in defensive strength in midfield from last season's fixture. Even if Mourinho instructs them to keep things tight, as I imagine he will, that's just not Cesc's natural game, and his immovable presence in the side necessitates a change in approach - one that promises more goals, but for me, not quite the same chance of clean sheets.

      Good post.

I think people are over-estimating the Chelsea side this year. I firmly believe they will win the title, and they have an immense side - but the defence is not what it was last year.
Ivan has loved roaming forward, which has been brilliant attacking wise but his sense of position when he gets back is poor and he's sluggish. Terry seems to be a bit.... off this year and I think they could let one past in a scrappy mess at the Etihad.

      2-1 City for me.

I agree that they'll win it (seems like most people do at the moment), but I've ditched Terry this week. Ivanovic is a great pick, as he's been by far the most attacking defender in the league so far this season, but apart from him, I'm not sure their defence will offer last season's value for money over their tricky run of games.

Indeed. I binned off Terry for Baines last night and am very happy with that transfer having watched Chelsea the past few weeks.
It seems attacking is more of an objective than defending and so they're conceding when they should be tighter.
Could be a big flaw in their play if they come up against a well organised side defensively.... another Stoke 1-0 shock maybe?

Hmm, I can't say I have many doubts about them going forwards. Teams as physical as this year's Chelsea are much better than purely technical sides when you defend deep against them - Costa is a battering ram, and if you're relying on your centre backs beating him in the box all day, you're in for a struggle.

Agree, but then you must not let his tally and form so far to overshadow the fact he is just another player. If you play a high line in a very well drilled defence you could catch him out every time...... if that will happen or not is another thing. This is the main problem teams face coming up against Chelsea right now, the doubt. Chelsea are full of confidence, and it takes alot to break that.

Enter Sergio Aguero and Vincent Kompany.

        @LeChef

Chelsea have given up the fewest shots per game this year... which is smilar to last year's defence.

So, what do you base this opinion of their *poor* backline on?

They conceded 3 goals to Everton in a scrappy 6-3 overhaul. And again, it is just my opinion. You can go by stats as much as you want - watching games is where I make my calls.

Can easily be handled by Mourinho - Cesc is a magician Mourinho cannot drop him.
He can isntead drop Oscar and start with Matic & Ramires/Mikel with Cesc behind Costa.

It is Chelsea's title to loose this season.

Thats a very interesting stat you came up with but Chelsea has been a beast going forward and I think Mourinho will put Ramires and matic in the holding midfield which puts up fabregas behind the forward. or he could go with 4-3-3. but only and only Mourinho has all the answers. My honest opinion would be that he'll go for a draw at the Etihad.

Pre and post game comments suggest his stubborness will go back to 3-5-2 when the CBs get fit again. However, if he does, would this be wise?

How? As in a virtual dice is rolled to decide who rises and who falls.

Except it clearly isn't like that. Perhaps once a certain threshold is reached THEN its random or somesuch. There could very easily be a random element involved.

Can't decide to move any of my midfield on for Di Maria or whether to just stick and save the FT.

Keeping 3 strong forwards so Boyd > ADM not an option.

    Thoughts?

    Fabregas Ramsey Sterling Siggy Boyd

      Stick IMO.

IF you dare not budge on your forward/boyd, then you would be taking a sidestep.

That's the power 4 you have there.

very hard to move any of the other 3 big hitters. think they will all finish with roughly the same points come season end, so its down to having them when they hit purple patches.

Fabregas will churn out assist all season with 5+ goals thrown in.
Sterling will have 10 goals come season end, Ramsey something similar with a few assists.
Di Maria, not sure which category he will fall into. With Falcao, Rooney, RvP and Mata also competing, I can see him more like Fabregas, with lots of assists and a few goals.

I have Fabregas, Ramsey, Sterling and Siggy, and wont be selling any of them for Di Maria just yet

Clyne > Bertrand for me. But looks really good. Going all out with triple soton but I like it and could pay off well.

I think Clyne is more promising throughout the season. Also Bertrand more likely to foul and get a booking

Looking at getting terry out this week, was originally planning on getting in taylor(swansea) as i already have clyne, hutton, lovren and van aanholt. This wouuld leave me with 2.9m in the bank so i can upgrade jelavic to welbeck if he hits form and also leaves cash to get falcao or aguero in for rooney if he ends up taking that midfield role he was in for the last 15 mins of the QPR game. However Baines has suddenly sprung to mind. Is getting baines foolinh as it leaves me stuck with little room to manoeurve if aguero?falcao or even sanchez in midfield hit form?

Yeah, I'm impressed by Hazard and I've no doubt those performances will transfer to points soon. Just looking at Chadli's stats on Doosra's Marauding Midfielders table (cheers for that by the way) and they look very impressive for a player so low priced.

Hmm. I so want to stick with Haz. I know he'll punish me the moment I transfer!

Yeah I was actually very surprised by Chadli's stats, just saw them earlier.

If you have 2 FT's I don't think it's a bad idea, but not sure if I'd pull the trigger.

Captaincy is going to be crucila this year with no Suarez.

I see Costa and Aguero captaincy rotation isn't great fixture wise...

Anyone got any captaincy rotations that they're willing to share to a sweet pea?

I tend to just captain the player with the strongest fixtures and enough form to justify the armband.

had a great game week after a shaky few weeks. I have 2.7 in the bank. Should I save my FT? Or make an upgrade? I was planning to use that money for Falkao but now i'm not so sure. Regardless it would be tap into MUFC, MCFC (would have to -4 for Aguero) or Southampton, with Naismith being the obvious casualty. Any help appreciated.
