Injuries

The Treatment Table – Gameweek 5

Our Monday afternoon regular is rolled out once again, as we scour the Premier League treatment rooms to assess the players who picked up injuries over the weekend action.

Aston Villa
The Midlands outfit were hit hard by a virus prior to the weekend home defeat to Arsenal. Paul Lambert confirmed Darren Bent and Nathan Baker missed out altogether, whilst Ashley Westwood also failed to feature – he was initially named in the starting XI but was forced to drop out. Andi Weimann was also subbed off at the break after struggling to overcome the same problem.

Burnley
Clarets midfielder David Jones was subbed off after 86 minutes of the weekend goalless draw against Sunderland with “a minor thigh injury”.

Chelsea
Ramires was withdrawn on 63 minutes having suffered a knee injury. Early reports suggest that the Brazilian could face a term of absence with the midfielder undergoing scans early this week.

Liverpool
Brendan Rodgers has confirmed Philippe Coutinho missed the trip to West Ham due to a groin problem, while Jordan Henderson is being assessed after picking up a hip complaint.

Man United
Jonny Evans was withdrawn after just 30 minutes of United’s loss at Leicester with a leg problem and, post-match, Louis van Gaal admitted:

“I don’t know how bad Evans is. We have to wait for a scan tomorrow but he is on crutches.”

Newcastle
Cheick Tiote will be assessed after limping off towards the end of Saturday’s home draw with Hull.

QPR
The problems are building up in midfield for Harry Redknapp. Joey Barton and Jordon Mutch were passed fit for Saturday’s home clash with Stoke after heading into the match as doubts due to hamstring problems – both players were subsequently subbed off with a recurrence of the injuries, whilst Sandro missed out altogether due to a knee complaint.

Southampton
Both Maya Yoshida and James Ward-Prowse were forced off with ankle problems in the weekend win at Swansea. New boy Toby Alderweireld missed Liberty clash with a minor hamstring problem but is expected to be back next weekend.

Sunderland
Steven Fletcher and Ricardo Alvarez missed the Black Cats’ trip to Burnley due to a calf complaint and knock respectively, though the latter has since been passed fit for tomorrow’s Capital One clash with Stoke. Gus Poyet has also revealed that Emmanuel Giaccherini was forced off on his first start of the season and will be assessed:

“Giaccherini had plenty of energy, going between the lines and I think he was one of our best players. That was the idea of playing him; to create that little bit more. He was thereabouts, so it’s not bad from him. Unfortunately, he took a big knock which we need to check today.”

Swansea
Dwight Tiendalli missed the weekend home defeat to Southampton with a slight groin problem.

West Brom
Giorgos Samaras missed out through injury as the Baggies picked up a 1-0 win at Spurs yesterday.

West Ham
Midfielder Cheick Kouyate is set to undergo scans after picking up a groin problem against Liverpool on Saturday evening – the summer signing stayed on the field after Sam Allardyce had made all three substitutions.

What do you think of this team:
    Mannone Krul
    Taylor Clyne Pieters Wisdom Vlaar
    Fabregas Ramsey Siggy Sterling Marney
    Costa Aguero Welbeck

Looks good but I don't see the defence consistently return high points.

Kompany or Mangala then switch to Koscielny or Mert.

Does sacrificing the one for the benefit of the many make sense?

I'm actually considering Aguero to Ulloa, which would give me an extra 6.3m itb. Sounds crazy, but I reckon Ulloa could go on to bag an additional 10-15 goals this season. I don't see Aguero scoring 35+ and there's the rotation and hamstring threat too.

Then there's the overall team improvement. It would enable me to have:

Krul and Elliot to 2 rotating keepers
4m def to big hitter (Baines, Ivan)
      Chadli to big hitter (Silva/Walcott)

Would these upgrades across the team compensate for the loss of one player?

      How the team would look:

      Krul
      Ivan / Baines / Clyne
      Sterling / ADM / Fabregas / Silva
      Welbz / Costa / Ulloa

      (Mannone, NTaylor, Duff)

Barking mad, or food for thought?

I like it as both Welbeck Ulloa seem to be very nice value, especially with those tasty fixtures.

The problem is that it will take you a long time to spend the cash you'll earn on the Aguero->Ulloa transfer, unless you take a big hit.

Well, no real rush on the keepers or Baines, so the Aguero and Chadli ones would take priority.

Yeah I guess that priority order is the best. I personally don't fancy baines until gw8, and playing Krul away to Stoke isn't bad.

The Utalitarian wildcard. I like it. I thought about something similar and in principle it' looks good but I would only do it if the fixtures were aligned and they're not right now. Gw8 maybe.

        my team now reads,

        Begovic
        Baines, Clyne, Duff
        Sterling, Fabregas, Di Maria, Siggy
        Costa, Welbeck, Ulloa

        McCarthy, McGeady, Wilson, Moore

        5m itb
So not a million miles away from your team.
I had planned to sit on the money until an expensive striker settled into some form or the other option which is yours is 3 weeks away.
        Siggy > Silva/ Walcott/ Ramsey/Mirallas
        McGeady > Boyd/ 4.5 ( owning Geads is a real headache. "Should I shoudnt I play him?")
        Moore > Ivanovic.
I like your idea. Just watch out for forwards exploding.

        Done the same myself

        But I have

        Forster

        Baines, Moreno, Clyne
        Fabregas, Sterling, ADM, Mirallas
        Welbeck, Costa, Ulloa

        JWP, Wisdom N Taylor Myhill

And can easily upgrade Mirallas to Hazard/Silva or Ramsey with the extra 2.4. Will see if and how he plays against Liverpool

Siggy is too good value to get rid of. I can afford the upgrade Siggy>ADM right now but I know I'll just regret it once I need money.

I would however do Rooney>Pelle or Welbeck though regardless (and did yesterday)

Are there any good 6.0-Baines options in defense?

I'm looking to get Baines in and potentially another top defender, but there's not much value there as far as I can see, since none of the top teams are keeping regular CS's.... anyone disagree?

Mangala looks like a good option, City's fixtures easing up and him and Kompany already have a great understanding of one anothers game so he should slot in ahead of Demichelis from now on. Goal threat from set-pieces an added bonus as well.

Yep, he's the one I fancy the most. Need to see if he's a rotation option with Demichelis first however.

Scored 1-in-10 with Porto which is pretty decent for a CB, and he'll surely be able to match that with City. 6.0 looks really solid for him too.

Would really like to get Di Maria in but not sure how to do it. I have two free transfers at the moment and 0,1 in the bank. Could do Sterling and Lamela to ADM and 7.0mid but not too keen on getting rid of Sterling.

      Krul, Elliot
      Baines, Clyne, Wilson, Naylor, Duff
      Fab, Sterling, Lamela, Siggy, Boyd
      Kun, Costa, Pelle

Seems like B is the answer,

So probably using my 2 FTs on Rooney/Krul to Welbeck/Forster

Have to strenghten the defence little by little instead of the more tempting Rooney/Ramsey to Welbeck/Di Maria...

      Manchester United snowball effect..

      - had Vidic been told Moyes was likely getting the sack, he would have stayed
      - our defense would be that much more solid and have that leadership in the back
      - we would also have a stand out captain option
      - Rooney would then justifiably be dropped if being outperformed by RVP and Falcao without any nonsense 'forcing' LVG's hands

there were plenty of stories, namely that one about Rio and Jagielka..I don't think there were any outright quotes from Vidic but I'm fairly confident that he would have stayed on to help usher in the transition

His first touch and speed of play through vision isn't good enough to pull the offensive strings from an advanced position, imo. He looked much better against QPR when he was up top, but dropping outside of the box to link up, rather than being responsible for the link-up outright all game.

Vidic had declined big time, for a start.

Both RVP and Rooney have given enough justification for benching, shouldn't be based upon the presence of other players. LVG doesn't have to give Roo the captaincy, remember.

Oh and of course, Rooney is an utter w***er. That's a big one, take note of it. Should have been sold oh so long ago.

I believe that Rooney would have been sold last season if Fergie stayed on for one more..

Fergie had already began putting the motion in place I believe until he decided to say f**k it and go for the title, bought RVP and kept Roo.

Realistically, he should have sold Roo as soon as he began threatening to leave.

Also Vidic wasn't as poor in 12/13 as last season, I think a tactical revolution/transition under LVG would have suited him and LVG would have played to his strengths, not to mention his presence on the field/in the dressing room and the example he could lead by for the youngsters in the back line.

              I hope he strips it.

Not sure how great Vidic's personality was. Okay, he was ticked off by Moyes. Instead of digging in, for the club that brought him so far, he throws a bit of a hissy fit and decides to leave. Could have waited until the Summer. He didn't, let me down to be honest.

agreed in the last bit, but with major knee injuries and the prospect of playing under that fool for another season I'm not surprised he targeted one last move to a nice warm area, can't blame him for looking out for himself a bit

United are on the brink of a vicious spiral. Characters like Rooney and Vidic are a prime part of the reason why - not Moyes at all.

And the current clown has made Rooney captain ...

had they spent as much money for Moyes as they spent for Van Gaal, none of this would be an issue

Moyes had a better record at this point into the season than Van Gaal

Moyes was drowing, out of his depth. No amount of money spent on players will make someone a better manager.

He was a good guy but mediocre manager. I wish him the best but he was never deserving of being the Manchester United manager.

That's a nonsense rebuttal..Moyes had never won a thing in his life and Ferguson is not infallible. For a man so good at man management, why he thought a team full of winners (albeit acted like petulant babies under Moyes) would immediately take to someone who had LITERALLY never won anything is beyond me..

It's not nonsense really, I'm sure Alex Ferguson put at least some thought into who would be a good long term replacement.

Clearly he valued the youth policy which has seen Barkley, stones, and Coleman come through, he transformed Everton, but let's be honest he's not going to win the league with them when other teams are £50-60m transfer kitties every summer.

I'm not saying moyes was a success but he needed more time

Used both my free transfers yesterday. I did Ramsey ➡ ADM and Eriksen ➡ Sigurdsson, the second transfer being a personal pick.

Leaves my XI for this week as.
      Begovic.
      Moreno. Clyne. van Aanholt.
      di Maria. Fabregas. Sterling. Sigurdsson.
      Rooney. Costa. Diouf.

      (Hamer. Davis. Coloccini. Hutton)

Now, well, I always dislike pitting a defender against my striker, here being van Aanholt V/S Diouf, though the fixture looks decent for both.
Now, I have three options in front of me.

      A. Coloccini ➡ Taylor (-4)
      B. Diouf ➡ Ulloa/Welbeck (-4)
      C. Take no hit.

Please give me your suggestions. 🙂

I've had to do that a bit lately, play my attackers against my defenders. I don't mind so much because it's hedging your bets. And we're never going to get that elusive full-house where every player does well in the same week.

I like your team as it is so would probably leave it now...maybe look at bringing in Welbeck for Diouf next week to give you Arsenal attacking cover again.

      Foster (Krul)
      Terry Clyne Chambers (Moore Jones*)
Di Maria Ramsey Sterling Siggy (Marney)
      Rooney Costa Naismith*

      1FT 1.2 ITB

Thinking I'll do Krul to Heaton next GW but for this GW either:

      A) Naismith to Ulloa and play Chambers (TOT) or Moore (cpl)
      B) Jones to PVA and Naismith to Welbeck (-4) (Will bench Chambers for next two GWs and play PVA (SWA and STO) and play Chambers thereafter
      C) Jones to Duff and Naismith to Pelle (-4) (Duffs next two are wba and lei)
      D) Save

Keep an eye on Henderson's reported hip injury. Not sure how Cambiasso's game may affect King, which could leave you needing to address midfield.

        RMT 1.3 ITB 1FT

        Krul (4.0)

        Chester, Wilson, Duff, Taylor, Wisdom

        FAB, Hazard, Siggy, Sterling, Boyd.

        Aguero, Pelle, Costa

Should i use my FT to get rid of Krul or upgrade a defender?
Or more so, get ADM in?

        Open to suggestions.

2 FT available. Am using one of them to get Aguero in and profit from Man City's extremely tasty schedule for the next 15 GWs.

Using the other one to fund it by taking either Baines or Tadic out. Would you:

        A) Tadic --> Schneiderlin (keep Baines, 0.0 ITB)
        B) Baines --> Chambers (keep Tadic, 0.6 ITB for further defensive upgrades)

Would need to downgrade one of:
        Chambers
        N.Taylor
        Wilson
to a 4m defender to do Rooney -> Falcao [both for free]

        a) do you that's worth it?
        b) If yes, which one?

Is anyone going to criticize SAF at some point for saying he left the team in good shape?

If ManU had spent last summer like they spent this summer, they wouldn't be in this daft predicament... and would have been able to pay lower wages to the same players (because they wouldn't need to pay a premium due to their lack of champions league football)

I've criticized him more than once. Made daft choice after daft choice in his last few seasons, culminating with Moyes.

              1. Pogba, should need no explaining
              2. Ramsey, should need no explaining
              3. Berbatov, not the decision to buy him but to drop him after he saved our asses and was the PL top scorer
              4. Giggs and Scholes, should've been phased out so much sooner for players like Pogba and Ramsey
              5. Buying RVP when we had Berbatov and needed CM help
              6. Letting OShea and Brown go, never mind at the same time
              7. Persisting with a bunch of crock CBs
              8. Park, see Giggs
              9. Not fecking Rooney off
              10. Moyes

Shall I go on? And those are specific examples. We never even replaced Keane, FFS. Not to this day.

I think with a lot of these examples you're not being entirely fair,

he can't be wrong for not 'fecking' Rooney off, and wrong for 'fecking' Pogba off.

You say giggs, scholes should have gone sooner, and then brown and o'shea not soon enough. Brown and o'shea have gone to Sunderland to battle relegation every year.

Let's not forget what a joke of a player Ramsey was when arsenal first signed him, and arsenal fans were embarrassed to have him, maybe the same will be true of cleverley in a year or so.

I didn't join this forum to argue about Man Utd, I'm not even a fan, or rival fan, I just can't believe any Utd fan wouldn't do anything other than worship the ground Ferguson walks on

SAF was a great manager and a huge success.

He also left the club he loved with a terrible legacy, a legacy of spoiled, rotten little shits. Lead by Wayne Rooney but it goes the whole way down to the youth, look at all that went on with Ravel Morrison.

As soon as Rooney threatened to leave he should have been f**ked out on his ear. SAF of old would have done that but he didn't and as such failed in that regard.

He did a lot of good for the club but this is, unfortunately, the bad that was hidden away for quite some time.

ravel is English, and clearly has a terrible attitude, Pogba is a looking a fantastic player, wish he was English!

But I think part of the reason he left was because he had an attitude of deserving to be a first choice player not earning it.

        C) for Zaha, transfer Rooney to Ulloa to get funds
