Monitor – Stewart Downing

It’d be fair to say that when the pre-season player lists were revealed last July, Stewart Downing was far from our thoughts as a viable Fantasy option. A goal and two assists over 2,507 minutes in 2013/14 highlights his lack of impact in a West Ham outfit that scored just 40 times over the entire campaign, and despite reports suggesting Sam Allardyce’s side were set to go on the attack this time around, we were anything but convinced.

After five Gameweeks, though, the Hammers are starting to deliver. A 3-1 win over Liverpool means they have now scored nine times so far – averaging of 1.8 goals per match compared to last year’s 1.05 – and, from a Fantasy perspective at least, Downing has been the player to benefit most. A total of 27 points is just six off the top of the midfield standings in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game and sees the 5.5-priced Downing sandwiched in between Aaron Ramsey and Eden Hazard, on 28 and 25 points respectively.

With a goal, two assists and six bonus points accrued, Downing’s prospects could be boosted further by a switch in formation which afforded him the role in “the hole” behind Enner Valencia last weekend.

In our next members article of the week, we turn to the Key Performance Indicators (KPI) tables in order to assess the 2%-owned Downing’s displays in comparison to the season gone by.

For those who aren’t familiar with them, KPI tables are designed to use a series of key stats to allow our members to track form or changes in player performance. By tracking the frequency of certain key statistics and comparing them over two separate periods of time, we can ascertain whether a player’s form has improved or declined. As mentioned in last summer’s introductory article, we’ve rolled out a preview movie which shows just how to get the best out of the KPI tables.

        I know, but as Pelle rose by 0.1m my waiting to bring him in doesn't hurt since the 0.2m on Ulloa allows me to break even. Small victories.

          Yeah good for you. I'm already in the Pelle camp - hard to resist a striker facing QPR.

            Might stick with Tadic and Welbeck over Ramsey and Pelle so I can afford Aguero. Tough decision.

              Yeah, really tough I know. i was thinking of Ulloa before as a way for me to do Roo -> Kun next week, but I think we shouldn't be too blinded with Kun's ability/history. That guy is quality, but getting crocked too foten and City are not scoring too well.

        Yep. I missed Welbeck but did get Pelle, Ulloa, and Costa's rises in any case.

        Also missed out ADM's rise since I didn't want to take a hit to trade Ramsey, which was effectively a 0.2 swing (though I didn't lose any trade value on Ramsey). Duff was the last one I didn't have but not that bothered tbh.

        As long as you follow the general trends and big bandwagons its not hard to pick up the value, but the important thing is to choose which ones to get on, and doing it quickly before the first rise 🙂

      Out of your group its easily Schneiderlin.

      I'm got a similar group but Tadic though, so the decision is a straight one between Siggy and Ulloa. I'm not gonna bench an on-form striker playing Palace though so its gonna be Siggy. Not too fussed with benching players either... last week I benched Fabregas and he blanked 😛

    Morning DZ.

    Ok so my first WC draft.

    Forster
    Clyne Chambers Naylor Duff Moore
    Fabregas diMaria Sterling Siggy Boyd
    Aguero Costa Pelle.

    Plan is keeping and analyze on GW 8 where I can either
    1. Costa -> Welbz, Naylor -> Baines
    2. Aguero -> Welbz, Naylor -> Baines
    3. Pelle -> Ulloa, Naylor -> Baines
    4. Pelle -> Welbz

    Just concerned by Aguero's gametime with 3 fixtures in a week.
    Considering getting Baines Welbeck in now but there's no such flexbility

    Thoughts?

        Oops sorry my wording is bad.

        WC now. I've set up my team to be 'ready' for GW 8. Just need to do those changes.

      Option 4 since you don't have an Arsenal mid.
      You could also downgrade Forster to Heaton/Mannone, saves you the .5 to afford Baines Gw8 if he doesn't rise

      You should be concerned about both Costa and Agüero being benched. Could easily happen for one or both this week or next.

      Selling Costa sounds risky.

      Lukaku. Mirallas too rotation prone and I think there's enough value with the defense to get away with no Baines Although if you can squash him in too at some point, it wouldn't hurt 😉

      Go for Lukaku. I considered him as Jovetic's replacement in GW4, but went for Naismith instead. In the end Naismith got me 1 point before I ditched him (and not even a price rise), while Lukaku could have got me 14 points. 🙁 It's acruel game.

                The concern is that he'll be rested or he'd be the clear cut choice for me. I'll probably captain him anyway as I've done the last two weeks and if it's three strikes he's out.

                  With Jovetic still out he won't be rested. Id say he's likely to get 70mins depending on the score.

      Hard to look past Aguero at the moment however.
