Monitor – Stewart Downing

It’d be fair to say that when the pre-season player lists were revealed last July, Stewart Downing was far from our thoughts as a viable Fantasy option. A goal and two assists over 2,507 minutes in 2013/14 highlights his lack of impact in a West Ham outfit that scored just 40 times over the entire campaign, and despite reports suggesting Sam Allardyce’s side were set to go on the attack this time around, we were anything but convinced.

After five Gameweeks, though, the Hammers are starting to deliver. A 3-1 win over Liverpool means they have now scored nine times so far – averaging of 1.8 goals per match compared to last year’s 1.05 – and, from a Fantasy perspective at least, Downing has been the player to benefit most. A total of 27 points is just six off the top of the midfield standings in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game and sees the 5.5-priced Downing sandwiched in between Aaron Ramsey and Eden Hazard, on 28 and 25 points respectively.

With a goal, two assists and six bonus points accrued, Downing’s prospects could be boosted further by a switch in formation which afforded him the role in “the hole” behind Enner Valencia last weekend.

In our next members article of the week, we turn to the Key Performance Indicators (KPI) tables in order to assess the 2%-owned Downing’s displays in comparison to the season gone by.

For those who aren’t familiar with them, KPI tables are designed to use a series of key stats to allow our members to track form or changes in player performance. By tracking the frequency of certain key statistics and comparing them over two separate periods of time, we can ascertain whether a player’s form has improved or declined. As mentioned in last summer’s introductory article, we’ve rolled out a preview movie which shows just how to get the best out of the KPI tables.

What was special about the 6 goals scored by Oleg Salenko to win the US 94 Golden Boot award?

Good morning, has anyone any thoughts on whether the strategy to increase the team value over the autumn by jumping on bandwagons still is a good one, bearing in mind the slow price increases this season?

Well, they have kept three clean sheets due to their enthusiasm, tenacity etc. So naturally everyone adding 2 plus 2 and making 5

Reality is that now they have so called easier fixtures, and they have to try and win. This means they have to come out of their shell, and they are going to start conceding. Also the new guy feeling will soon dissapear leaving a small threadbare squad , that will gradually sink down the table

It's a pretty well documented trend that the promoted teams always seem to start the season with more CS than they get as the season wears on. No idea why that should be, but it does seem to happen.

They come from the Championship with lot of confidence and winning mentality after a successfull campaign, which is gradually broken down as the season gets goin

It understandable, the better teams tend to take longer to get going, they have players involved in world cup etc, new stars to bed in. While teams like Burnley begin the season as a tight unit, high on adrenaline, and all excited, they play above themselves for a month or two.
Then that wears off at the same time the big teams start hitting form, then there are injuries suspensions and their small squads are exposed

Agree with some of that, enthusiasm and tenacity has helped, but I've watched them play several games and they are just a good, old fashioned solid defense with plenty of energy. I think they'll go on doing well. Enthusiasm didn't help QPR

Agree but provided we dont have any alternatives, have to bring one that is scoring more. I would only pick Duff from Burnley's defence because of his price. If someone is ready to pay 4.5m, I wont suggest Burnley's as we have some decent options at that price 🙂

Not sure I quite agree they're rubbish. They are keeping clean sheets, perform well away to bottom 13 teams and the fixtures are in their favour. I think they are good to hold up until any fixture congestion periods like the festive season. Duff also continues to rise and will accumulate more owners if they continue their run

      1. Derbz87

I'd have to strongly disagree here Dyche looks to be doing an outstanding job with the resources he has at his disposal. Don't forget in amongst that 3 clean sheets in 5 they have already hosted United and Chelsea and taken trips to Swansea and Palace which are notoriously tricky away games. Their attacking returns are being severley diminished by injuries to crucial players in Ings and Vokes who contributed 41/72 goals last season between them. By rights they should be getting beat by the likes of Palace and Sunderland

See above they have been very close to winning especially the Palace game with Arfield's last minute penalty. Incidentally Arfield was their next top scorer after Ings and Vokes with 8 goals in a promoted side. Tells you everything you need to know they aren't struggling to win because they aren't attacking enough their two biggest goal threats are out. And as I said you can hardly call their fixtures a decent run they are clearly a hard to beat side.

Madness to overlook the value on offer for players like Duff - 90 mins a week, cs potential and budget price.

He's given me 14 points over the last two weeks.

            As a 4th or 5th defender, it's a no-brainer.

So question of the week, Ramsey => ADM (-4) yes or no?

    a) NO
Not worth a hit and Ramseys fixtures will be great gw8 onwards.
    Things might change next week.

    b) YES
You/I need ADM, no doubt about that.
If I don't do it for hit this week, is worth doing free next week - gw8 is even closer then.
Can't really drop Sterling or Fab either...

I think we've gone past the tipping point. Doing it before the price changes this week was probably the deadline - only a couple of matches now before Arsenal's fixtures are significantly better than Man Utd's. Next week for free might still work as far as points are concerned but you'll run the risk of needing to swap back - and those 2 transfers could be put to better use.

    Costa or Pelle for Captain?

    Costa: Great form, high ownership/captainship

Most of my rivals put ADM in straight away and it's paid off. Can see him being a consistent performer and his price is rising rapidly. Worse comes to worse and Ramsey starts out scoring ADM I'll transfer back, but I doubt it!
Also Arsenal champ league group is a tough one so even though there fixtures get better, there's more risk of Ramsey being rested.

Granted he can't continue like he is week in week out, there will be the occasional games where he doesn't perform. But I really do think come the end of the season he'll be right up there with the top scoring midfielders.

True I don't think much phases him though. Even if he does something bad he does not shy away and gets on the ball the next opportunity. Course there's going to be the odd game he won't produce but like you say he'll be up their come the end of the season

Looking through the fixtures this week on paper we have some serious attacking point scoring potential - two Derbies that usually have goals in them for both sets of sides, Man Utd West Ham has potential for some goals both ways, Chelsea at home have been very decent going forwards and could get a few against Villa, Soton and Swansea both have games where they could get a few and City after last night could really turn it on against a Hull side that have lost their way defensively. Even the games you can see being more drab I think Leicester Palace has goals in it and ditto Stoke Newcastle.

Not in a hurry short-term, but plan is to ship rooney and move for either studge, aguero or falcao, and I am thinking maybe Falcao could be the better choice with Uniteds easy fixturelist and full concentration on the PL?
Or am I just romantizising the similar liverpool campaign of last season and overlooking more valid arguments for getting in Aguero or Studge instead?

Even though he's scored in every game so far except vs Chelsea away and has a relatively easy fixture in Palace?

I got the same problem, and im going to bench Ulloa, obv its a hard choice and when the gameweek is over i probably should have benched some1 else.

No Peter Crouch in the captains poll and not on the Watchlist...They have Newcastle at home !!!...Stoke are one of the most attacking teams of late and old Mr Crouchy is fresh from a 12 pt haul last week....

Aye...too good a fixture. Something of a long shot (pardon the pun) but a definite pick this week....either one as you say...
