Monitor – Stewart Downing

It’d be fair to say that when the pre-season player lists were revealed last July, Stewart Downing was far from our thoughts as a viable Fantasy option. A goal and two assists over 2,507 minutes in 2013/14 highlights his lack of impact in a West Ham outfit that scored just 40 times over the entire campaign, and despite reports suggesting Sam Allardyce’s side were set to go on the attack this time around, we were anything but convinced.

After five Gameweeks, though, the Hammers are starting to deliver. A 3-1 win over Liverpool means they have now scored nine times so far – averaging of 1.8 goals per match compared to last year’s 1.05 – and, from a Fantasy perspective at least, Downing has been the player to benefit most. A total of 27 points is just six off the top of the midfield standings in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game and sees the 5.5-priced Downing sandwiched in between Aaron Ramsey and Eden Hazard, on 28 and 25 points respectively.

With a goal, two assists and six bonus points accrued, Downing’s prospects could be boosted further by a switch in formation which afforded him the role in “the hole” behind Enner Valencia last weekend.

In our next members article of the week, we turn to the Key Performance Indicators (KPI) tables in order to assess the 2%-owned Downing’s displays in comparison to the season gone by.

For those who aren’t familiar with them, KPI tables are designed to use a series of key stats to allow our members to track form or changes in player performance. By tracking the frequency of certain key statistics and comparing them over two separate periods of time, we can ascertain whether a player’s form has improved or declined. As mentioned in last summer’s introductory article, we’ve rolled out a preview movie which shows just how to get the best out of the KPI tables.

Tough call. Siggy should pick up again (he's just been up against 2 of the stingiest defences in Sot and Che. He also seems to like a good away fixture.

Palace seem leakier than a leaky thing in a rainstorm so Ulloa could be a good bet too.

Chadli has impressed and has the derby (usually high scoring affairs) However, Spurs have looked a bit clueless and he's been subbed off in 3 of the 4 games he's played in around the 60-70 mark.

      Id bench Chadli personally.

After a decent start things are starting to slide. I've got two FTs, these transfers look alright?

Mata & Terry -> Di Maria & Clyne

    De Gea
    Terry Lovren Duff
    Sterling Ramsey Mata Siggy
    Costa Rooney Pelle

Gilks Moore Dummett Marney. 0.8 ITB

Will probably look at losing De Gea and Rooney in 2 weeks time. Maybe for Welbeck/Szczesny or something with Aguero.

Thanks. I thought about losing Lovren but I got him in for these fixtures so thought I may as well stick it out given Terry's bad fixtures coinciding with them. He may be next to go though if I need funds for Aguero.

How am I looking for GW6?

    Forster (Myhill)
    Clyne, Moreno, Pieters (Coloccini) (Taylor)
Di María, Sigurdsson, Fábregas, Sterling (Zaha)
    Ulloa, Falcao, Costa

Not 100% happy with my defense but would require hits to change it now, so thinking I'll change it next week.

I might be wrong, but I think the game had less numbers back then in the days of Ronaldo. Like 2-2.5 million or something.

        Can anyone recall?

The numbers playing the game has steadily increased over time. I think this may have contributed to them changing the transfer system slightly, the ease with which you could amass a huge team value increased each season. (i think they may have gone too far, but we shall see, I applaud them for trying)

Does anybody use the FPL Price Changes site?

I've been following it as a guide as to when to make changes and it doesn't seem very reliable. Last season it was spot on.

Early teething problems this season perhaps, but what are your thoughts?

They're still having difficulty working out the algorithm FPL uses to calculate the price changes. There's some stuff on the FISO forum about why they're struggling this year. It's very annoying!

Alright guys I think I am setting up like this for the weekend with a -4:

    Mannone
    Clyne | wisdom | Bertrand
    Ramsey | sterling | siggy | hazard
    Costa (C) | pelle | aguero (VC)

    Given - manquillo | Hutton | Albrighton

Decided to double up on the saints D this week, and bring in aguero. The saints D is looking too good at the moment, and with their fixtures, it seems like the right way to go. Man city has some good fixtures coming up as well. Yes they are busy with CL and etc, but aguero should be playing majority of BPL games. If he can play 60mins in those games, he should repay my faith. These game is all about taking a couple of risks, hopefully these are somewhat calculated. Any flaws? (Wildcard intact - 0.0 ITB)

I already got rid of Bardsley for Bertrand mate. Just not confident in stokes D at the moment. Just not as resolute any more. Decided to hold onto to manquillo because of liverpools good couple of fixtures coming up. I know their defence is rubbish, but worst comes to worst if they keep conceding I can trade manquillo down to chambers for example when arsenals fixtures become a little tastier

Unless he's got the worst flu ever, he will play. He's been sick since Monday.....I'm sure he'll be fit to play by this weekend.

Is Krul confirmed out? Might as well give Elliot a game and save your transfer mate.

Well I sold Ramsey 2 GW's ago to afford Kun, and I got ADM this week.. Still, I'm not sure it's worth a transfer this week, both have great fixtures. If you save for next week you'll have more options.

I like both moves, with the goalie one preferred. The Rambo move is one you have to go with your gut feeling on.

Both seem like decent transfers, although no Arsenal attack for the derby might be worrying. I'd consider saving depending on how certain you are on ADM 🙂

Hi guys, need help. Really delaying this and loosing cash every day.
    TEAM:
    Bego
    Terry, Chambers, Wisdom
    Sterling, Sigurdsson, Chadli, Di Maria
    Rooney, Aguero, Naismith

    (bench: Krul, Duff, Caulker, sodder)

4,6 in the bank and the plan was to get in Costa this week, but how?

    A) Naismith and Terry --> Costa and Bertrand (-4)
    B) Naismith and Rooney --> Costa and Pelle (-4)
    C) Rooney --> Costa

    What do you think??

Ade to Welbeck worth it for a FT this week to catch further rises? Already done Mata to Sterling and this would allow for moves such as Ramsey to ADM etc (possibly for a hit if I'm feeling brave!)

I would yes. In terms of players its better. long term Welbeck cheap way into Arsenal. Funds you moves ahead. Gets that f'ing dyspraxic drunk giraffe out of your team. Go for it

I did it, feels good to have 1.4 million extra in the bank for future transfers. Could easily come back to bite you thoug as ade loves these kind of games

Yeah it almost certainly will bite me as you say, but I really don't think I want Emmanuel "can't be arsed" Adebayor in my team much longer 😛 Cheers for the reply!

So FPL statistics was spot on 2 days ago with Duff and Costa rises. Last night it predicted Ivanovic rise and potentially Cesc and Forster. Ulloa rose instead. Really not getting anywhere with these changes are we?!

They weren't spot on. It was Just a case of throw enough shit some will stick.

      Ignore the price rise sites.

To be fair they were literally the only 2 rises that they predicted that night, it wasn't like tfpl or fiso that have 15 players supposedly rising and then some will stick.

Anyway I am actually ignoring the sites and the transfer I want to do this week is guaranteed not to require any look at price change sites, it was mostly out of curiosity if anyone will figure them out.

I think the system this year is more based on the amount of transfers in rather than the ratio in percentage. It's also up to the fact, if a player has or hasn't already risen, so you could sometimes figure out who'll rise by yourself.

      It won't improve.

The three it's missed recently (Ulloa last night and Welbeck and Pelle - sorry Rudi - A couple of days ago) were all fast-moving NTIs. I think there was a higher estimate for the number of wildcarders bringing these players in - so the projected percentages were lower and there was a greater margin for error. I really think we're getting closer - but watch these fast bandwagons. Naismith (back when he was desired) was another one who rose in price quicker than expected.

He'll get more. Unpredictable though, you just have to keep him in your team long term.

I think attacking fullbacks as baines, ivanovic, coleman or clyne you need to keep in your team for the long run as they will score good over the season. It will be hard to predict what gw they will do good and 1 pointers will occure now and then

Who's bringing in Ulloa for Naismith this week?

Also, anyone doubling up on Southampton defence and/or doing a Clyne/Fraser combo?

Dropped to 2nd this week in my mini league (possible 120 EUR windfall) so am thinking the latter w/ Ulloa/Rooney/Costa up front.

It'll mean -4 but Southampton at home to QPR? Guaranteed. Ulloa to score against Palace? Guaranteed.

Also, Lampard - 3 goals in 2 games. He might not start for City this week, but who's betting on him coming on in the 75th/80th minute when City are already up 3-1 and he bags a cheeky 8 yarder?
