Fixtures

Frisking the Fixtures – Gameweek 8 – The Weak

On Wednesday we took our first look at the upcoming fixtures over Gameweeks 8-13 and assessed the teams with Strong schedules over that period. Today it’s the turn of the less fortunate sides. In the main, Fantasy managers are mostly unaffected by the worst of the schedule, with relatively low-ownership sides such as QPR, Hull and Sunderland bearing the brunt of the fixture list’s ire, although Man United are about to face their first real test, posing questions for owners of Louis van Gaal’s premium-priced assets.

QPR

“frisking

Pinned to the foot of the table after failing to make the most of their easier fixtures, Harry Redknapp’s side now have a terrible month or so ahead, with Liverpool, Chelsea and Man City lying in wait over the next four Gameweeks. This is a team with both form and fixtures against them and a defence that has so far only kept out Sunderland, and looks unlikely to improve any time soon. Any remaining owners of Steven Caulker may be minded to thank him for his Gameweek 5 goal and move on, while Rob Green will be in need of save points. Likewise, an attack that has mustered just four goals looks highly unlikely to prosper, taking Charlie Austin off the table as a contender.

After these fixtures are done, though, the Hoops do have a rather decent schedule up to and including the Christmas period, but they will have to turn their form around quite dramatically at both ends of pitch to persuade managers to consider investment.

Hull

“frisking

Defeated just twice so far, Steve Bruce’s side have given a good account of themselves after a summer filled with new arrivals. Even so, the Tigers haven’t brought a great deal of Fantasy appeal as they’ve struggled to shut teams out and their attacking points have been spread just a little too thinly, with the possible exception of Nikica Jelavic. The icing on the cake is the turning of the fixture list against them, as the next six Gameweeks includes trips to Arsenal, Liverpool and Man United.

Ironically, James Chester is now back in the side after Bruce reverted to a 3-5-2 formation that paid off with a clean sheet, but the timing doesn’t encourage investment. Mo Diame has popped up with three goals in four appearances, but the returns of the Senegalese look likely to slow down against this calibre of opposition. Nikica Jelavic has scored four goals and would possibly have blinked brighter on Fantasy radars before now if it hadn’t been for the remarkable competition in his price bracket. As it is, he’s likely to stay off the radar, at least until the fixtures really clear around Gameweek 17. At that point, we will have seen more of his team-mate Abel Hernandez and be better placed to make a more informed judgement over his potential.

Sunderland

“frisking

Having toiled for much of the season, Gus Poyet finally got the mix right as the Black Cats exploded into life to put three past Stoke and earn their first victory of the campaign. The timing could have been better for Fantasy managers as the fixtures take a marked nosedive – the next six Gameweeks include four unappealing ties against Southampton, Arsenal, Everton and Chelsea. For all the progress Poyet has made, Sunderland’s Fantasy assets are rather unlikely to profit from these fixtures.

In defence, Patrick van Aanholt’s move from Chelsea has made him quite popular, at least amongst our community, and he’s earned his owners fair rewards; the time has probably come to move him on, though. Vito Mannone could still pay his way with save points (he’s shown himself more than capable in that regard) but clean sheets look a bit too optimistic to hope for. A midfield which started brightly has waned of late, though Steven Fletcher and Connor Wickham, have only just started to blossom – again, though, investment ahead of these fixtures seems unwise.

BE WARY OF

Crystal Palace
Well beaten by Hull, Neil Warnock’s reign at Selhurst Park has brought mixed success so far. Palace are still a more attacking bunch than under previous boss Tony Pulis and some of their assets could yet do very well for their value but the time to gamble probably isn’t now, as the Eagles square up to Chelsea, Man United and Liverpool in the next five Gameweeks. After that, though, the pastures turn greener and Martin Kelly and Jason Puncheon could pique our interest, while even Marouane Chamakh could find his way into Fantasy squads if he impresses against the big guns.

Man United
Overcoming early season disappointments to rise to fourth place in the league, there are still question marks over Louis van Gaal’s side, not least around his injury-beset backline. We’re about to find out whether his side are ready to once again hold their own against the cream of the Premier League, as over the next six Gameweeks, the Red Devils square up to Chelsea, Arsenal and Man City. With so many injuries compounding poor defensive form, the United defence wasn’t high on any watchlists anyway, but the midfield and attack seemed at least to be clicking. The jewel in the Fantasy crown is the gifted Angel Di Maria, whose third double-figure haul in four weeks has managers clamouring for his services but such testing fixtures cast doubt over his ability to maintain that form. The suspension of Wayne Rooney brought Juan Mata briefly back into contention, but with one of the next two fixtures against Chelsea, the little Spaniard doesn’t look like a good short-term punt, with his skipper returning in Gameweek 10. Radamel Falcao finally got off the mark but spending 11.0 of your FPL budget on a player with these fixtures seems brave.

Swansea
After a cracking start to the season, Garry Monk’s side have begun to toil and are winless since Gameweek 3. The Swans still have two decent fixtures left of their kind run, but after that the skies turn dark for a time as trips to Everton and Man City bookend a home clash with Arsenal. Reasonable fixtures follow those matches, though, and anyone holding Neil Taylor may wish to rotate him to the bench for those weeks, while Gylfi Sigurdsson’s third double-figure haul of the season served a timely reminder of his value and few will be willing to part company in spite of a testing schedule. Wilfried Bony, on the other hand, hasn’t yet moved into top gear and the time doesn’t look right to jump on board.

Madness to consider shifting Costa out for Aguero? Means I can get Baines with Hazard continuing to front my Chelsea attack. Haz and Aguero may just be the differential that people could shift to.

          Yes to shifting Costa out.
          Yes to putting Aguero in.

I own Costa and am thinking of dropping him to upgrade my midfield, hence my reply. Not madness doesnt mean "Do it", i am just thinking the same thing and makes sense. Either if i drop Costa or not, i can understand why one would go without him.

Same here. Just pondering the logic around the move and seeing what the community says. It's an against the herd move so I expect a strong 'no' but interested in both sides of the argument.

My idea is to get Cisse or Berahino and make a strong midfield: ADM, Sterling, Hazard, Walcott. Costa will get more points than Berahino i know, but sometimes he ll be benched (Remy has to be used in "easy" games). Plus he is a card magnet and doesnt get BP unless he scores at least twice. And that midfield seems perfect. Its risky, but not madness. On the other hand, Costa is producing all the time and everyone has him. So, keeping him together with Chadli and another medium price Midfielder will give you about 15 points per week from 3 players which is not bad, but not exciting either...

Saying Costa will get benched in easy games is just a farcical way of you trying to trick yourself into thinking he is a poor pick. Come on.

Your attack looks well sorted for the next handful of weeks so I guess just slowly take it one transfer at a time to sort the back out. Unless you want to downgrade an attacker I would downgrade Moreno to a 4.5 in order to upgrade Krul to a 5.0 keeper and upgrade one of your 4.0 guys to a 4.5. so you have

              5.0
              Clyne 4.5/4.5/4.0/4.0

Cisse is on my watchlist, if his fixtures were more accessible in the long-term I would consider finding space for him but Newcastle's fixtures are a mixed bag - there isn't a clean run of weak opponents for a 6-8 gameweek run where I can validate him, its more like '2 good, 2 bad' all season and I can't bench a FW, especially one so unpredictable as Papiss, and I couldn't captain him either. So it's a no from me.

It depends if you equate a dullard pick with ridiculously high ownership. It wasn't long ago that preseason there was a very strong and highly numbered camp saying Costa was going to be shit and not worth his then 10.5 opening price. How short our memories are.

I was firmly in the "get him" camp and Di do from the off...and yes...I do equate high ownership to dull...it sort of blunts the game a bit....Currently my son is battering me with an OR of about 5k ( mainly from picks I've fed him from here) but now we both have Costa I'm tempted to go Aguero just because it's not the same...

I had him from the off but got rid before his "injury" / hat trick game and have decided he will not grace my team page thusly. I know you of all posters on here doesn't need to be reminded to play the game your own way 🙂

You know, this conversation reminds me of what a wise Indian lady taught me about curry spices, and curry making, when I was in Durban, many, many years ago.

I was all for chucking in cayenne pepper, nutmeg, chilies(deseeded in those days, and still, by me) etcetera and etcetera. But, I forgot! to add turmeric, a very bitter, and, yes, dull spice.

So Ana said to me that my curry would be very exciting, and delicious. She praised me on my correct use of lemon zest, and lemon juice. But then she said that the only problem was that the meal would be ephemeral, that my guests would not remember it, as they should. And she said that she was sad for this, because I had good hands, and deserved better.

But why should this be, I asked Ana. And she told me that all fine things should be rooted, and that without turmeric, the spices would fail to take root on the tongue, and would therefore not be remembered. Furthermore, our digestions would be troubled also. And she winked!

I have never ever forgotten turmeric, or its crucial functions, again.:-)

Let's touch on 'Differentials'. Is anybody in the position already where they actually need them?

I think unless you're 100+ points behind your ML leader (in which the ML means something to you, like with people you know; your mates, work colleagues etc) which I doubt many of us are, after 7 GWs, are they needed?

I'd get a differential (which I see as less than 10% ownership) if I actually think they're a good purchase. Take Downing for instance - I think he's a decent option and only owned by 5.3%

I am disagreeing with your opinion that he is not worth the price. I think he is worth the price. I think that captaining the best striker in the league and getting double those points is well worth pretty much any price just as Suarez would have been worth a 13.5 starting price as well. That is my opinion.

Just because he is the best striker in the league does not mean he is the best for fantasy football. Having someone like Ulloa instead of Aguero is difference between having luxury picks like Baines & Walcott over budget options like Wisdom & Chadli. Personally, I think you can only go for Aguero is you are going to captain him every week, otherwise he is not worth the money.

Can one compete without ADM? Or Baines?

I don't currently own either and I'm really torn on whether I should bring them in or just. Di Maria is one of the best players in the world, but the schedule and his history of not scoring that many goals are real turn offs. Baines is enticing given his schedule, but having Baines, Ivan, Costa and Aguero seems really difficult and Everton's defense has not been overly impressive so far.

        My team is currently.

        Bego - Krul
        Ivan - Clyne - Duff - Wisdom - Chester
        Fabregas - Sterling - Siggy - Tadic - 4.5
        Aguero - Costa - Welbeck

1 FT, 103.0 TV, 0,5 ITB, WC saved for DGWs.

        My planned trades are:

        - Bego -> Guzan (AVL)/Foster(WBA) because the Bego/Krul rotation is not working from GW9 onwards and the above goalies offer a very nice rotation with Krul.
        - Chester -> Chambers or like GW9.
        - my 4.5 mid -> money making cheap mid

The question is, can I compete without ADM and Baines, or should I dismantle my team to bring them in.

        My options are:
        A) just stick to the above trades
        B) Get ADM by: Bego > Guzan + Fab > ADM, -4
        C) Get Baines by: Ivan > Baines FT
        D) Get Baines by: Fab > Chadli, Chester > Baines, -4
        E) Do something crazy like Fab > ADM, Chester > Baines, Bego > Guzan, Sterling > Chadli, -12 / WC
        F) something completely different

          Sitting on this....

          Forster (Heaton)
          Ivan, Clyne, PVA, (Hutton, Duff)
          Fab, Siggy, Sterling, Tadic Hendo
          Costa, Kun, Ulloa

          0.4ITB 1FT

Gonna leave for GW8 but think I need to get ADM in and reluctant to lose Cesc or Raheem to do it. Kun and Ivan my only ways to really make the move but likely not to pay off

I think that if the community was to actually pick the best 11 rather than picking differentials to try and be different, then it might be a lot closer than it currently stands.

          Thoughts on this WC team?

          Forster / 4.0

          Baines / Bertrand / Duff / Wisdom / Moore

          ADM / Fabregas / Sterling / Siggy / Boyd

          Aguero / Costa / Naismith

currently 0.1 short of this team but should be able to get it if Ivanovic rises and I get Baines in for him. Wondering if Sturridge is a better short term punt for the next 3 (qpr, HUL, new) than Aguero (TOT, whu, MUN)? Would be planning on getting Aguero back in afterwards.. cheers for any thoughts

Idk about Ivan to Baines. Chelsea is dominating right now where Everton has let up the most goals

Really bored. Help me out please?

          Begovic McCarthy
          Baines Moreno Clyne Naylor Moore
          Sterling Siggy Fabregas Tadic Boyd
          Costa Dzeko Pelle

3m itb, 1 FT. Any feedback would be massively appreciated. Dunno what to do with my FT.

Are there any sites that give cleansheet odds on future Prem games, like in the next 2-4 weeks? Or do all betting sites only do it a few days in advance?

One injury and those odds are meaningless.
