Fixtures

Frisking the Fixtures – Gameweek 8 – The Weak

On Wednesday we took our first look at the upcoming fixtures over Gameweeks 8-13 and assessed the teams with Strong schedules over that period. Today it’s the turn of the less fortunate sides. In the main, Fantasy managers are mostly unaffected by the worst of the schedule, with relatively low-ownership sides such as QPR, Hull and Sunderland bearing the brunt of the fixture list’s ire, although Man United are about to face their first real test, posing questions for owners of Louis van Gaal’s premium-priced assets.

QPR

“frisking

Pinned to the foot of the table after failing to make the most of their easier fixtures, Harry Redknapp’s side now have a terrible month or so ahead, with Liverpool, Chelsea and Man City lying in wait over the next four Gameweeks. This is a team with both form and fixtures against them and a defence that has so far only kept out Sunderland, and looks unlikely to improve any time soon. Any remaining owners of Steven Caulker may be minded to thank him for his Gameweek 5 goal and move on, while Rob Green will be in need of save points. Likewise, an attack that has mustered just four goals looks highly unlikely to prosper, taking Charlie Austin off the table as a contender.

After these fixtures are done, though, the Hoops do have a rather decent schedule up to and including the Christmas period, but they will have to turn their form around quite dramatically at both ends of pitch to persuade managers to consider investment.

Hull

“frisking

Defeated just twice so far, Steve Bruce’s side have given a good account of themselves after a summer filled with new arrivals. Even so, the Tigers haven’t brought a great deal of Fantasy appeal as they’ve struggled to shut teams out and their attacking points have been spread just a little too thinly, with the possible exception of Nikica Jelavic. The icing on the cake is the turning of the fixture list against them, as the next six Gameweeks includes trips to Arsenal, Liverpool and Man United.

Ironically, James Chester is now back in the side after Bruce reverted to a 3-5-2 formation that paid off with a clean sheet, but the timing doesn’t encourage investment. Mo Diame has popped up with three goals in four appearances, but the returns of the Senegalese look likely to slow down against this calibre of opposition. Nikica Jelavic has scored four goals and would possibly have blinked brighter on Fantasy radars before now if it hadn’t been for the remarkable competition in his price bracket. As it is, he’s likely to stay off the radar, at least until the fixtures really clear around Gameweek 17. At that point, we will have seen more of his team-mate Abel Hernandez and be better placed to make a more informed judgement over his potential.

Sunderland

“frisking

Having toiled for much of the season, Gus Poyet finally got the mix right as the Black Cats exploded into life to put three past Stoke and earn their first victory of the campaign. The timing could have been better for Fantasy managers as the fixtures take a marked nosedive – the next six Gameweeks include four unappealing ties against Southampton, Arsenal, Everton and Chelsea. For all the progress Poyet has made, Sunderland’s Fantasy assets are rather unlikely to profit from these fixtures.

In defence, Patrick van Aanholt’s move from Chelsea has made him quite popular, at least amongst our community, and he’s earned his owners fair rewards; the time has probably come to move him on, though. Vito Mannone could still pay his way with save points (he’s shown himself more than capable in that regard) but clean sheets look a bit too optimistic to hope for. A midfield which started brightly has waned of late, though Steven Fletcher and Connor Wickham, have only just started to blossom – again, though, investment ahead of these fixtures seems unwise.

BE WARY OF

Crystal Palace
Well beaten by Hull, Neil Warnock’s reign at Selhurst Park has brought mixed success so far. Palace are still a more attacking bunch than under previous boss Tony Pulis and some of their assets could yet do very well for their value but the time to gamble probably isn’t now, as the Eagles square up to Chelsea, Man United and Liverpool in the next five Gameweeks. After that, though, the pastures turn greener and Martin Kelly and Jason Puncheon could pique our interest, while even Marouane Chamakh could find his way into Fantasy squads if he impresses against the big guns.

Man United
Overcoming early season disappointments to rise to fourth place in the league, there are still question marks over Louis van Gaal’s side, not least around his injury-beset backline. We’re about to find out whether his side are ready to once again hold their own against the cream of the Premier League, as over the next six Gameweeks, the Red Devils square up to Chelsea, Arsenal and Man City. With so many injuries compounding poor defensive form, the United defence wasn’t high on any watchlists anyway, but the midfield and attack seemed at least to be clicking. The jewel in the Fantasy crown is the gifted Angel Di Maria, whose third double-figure haul in four weeks has managers clamouring for his services but such testing fixtures cast doubt over his ability to maintain that form. The suspension of Wayne Rooney brought Juan Mata briefly back into contention, but with one of the next two fixtures against Chelsea, the little Spaniard doesn’t look like a good short-term punt, with his skipper returning in Gameweek 10. Radamel Falcao finally got off the mark but spending 11.0 of your FPL budget on a player with these fixtures seems brave.

Swansea
After a cracking start to the season, Garry Monk’s side have begun to toil and are winless since Gameweek 3. The Swans still have two decent fixtures left of their kind run, but after that the skies turn dark for a time as trips to Everton and Man City bookend a home clash with Arsenal. Reasonable fixtures follow those matches, though, and anyone holding Neil Taylor may wish to rotate him to the bench for those weeks, while Gylfi Sigurdsson’s third double-figure haul of the season served a timely reminder of his value and few will be willing to part company in spite of a testing schedule. Wilfried Bony, on the other hand, hasn’t yet moved into top gear and the time doesn’t look right to jump on board.

Just seeking some thoughts on Swansea

I have Naylor, and they have a few tough games coming up from GW10

But from GW13 things ease again. But Swansea seem better value for CS at home than away. He's cheap enough to be rotated. Just curious what other Naylor owners have planned

Same goes for owners of Saints defenders

      Fixtures Wakey, fixtures

I have Costa and Aguero and plan to add Welbeck

      that should be ok

people say 1 goal isn't enough to justify 12m on Kun. I think they're only half right

If he only ever scored one a game then they have a case, but an average of 1 a game with the odd explosion thrown in make him a viable captaincy pick most weeks (perhaps the same can currently only be said of Costa) That justifies the outlay

      1. Dr Dream
        • 11 Years

Aye they're not good are they...even so if he hits a bit of form and (along with Studge) he drags a few Costa owners away it'll be good for the game...Costa Aguero Falcao Sturridge matching each other/ish..means no template...It was actually a shame Studge got injured because that drove a lot towards Costa...

(repost from end of last page)

    Thoughts on this WC team?

    Forster / 4.0

    Baines / Bertrand / Duff / Wisdom / Moore

    ADM / Fabregas / Sterling / Siggy / Boyd

    Aguero / Costa / Naismith

currently 0.1 short of this team but should be able to get it if Ivanovic rises and I get Baines in for him. Wondering if Sturridge is a better short term punt for the next 3 (qpr, HUL, new) than Aguero (TOT, whu, MUN)? Would be planning on getting Aguero back in afterwards.. cheers for any thoughts

Ok lots of opinions on who are 'The Essentials'?!
As I see it, these are the most popular choices.

    Baines
    Ivanovic
    ADM
    Sterling
    Fabregas/Hazard
    Siggy
    Costa
    Aguero

The problem lies in that not all are affordable; with many FPL managers having to forego one (most probably one of Aguero or Costa), most probably two of the above (if they own both Aguero and Costa) and in some cases three!

Question is...... What order are 'The Essential'?

I think ADM will eventually become the most "essential" but nothing as crazy as C.Ronaldo, Suarez, Bale etc

Hmm, not a move i like tbh. Downing could still just be a flash in the pan. Siggy's still the best performing midfielder at a relatively cheap price.Reckon i'll keep him until the end of the season, barring injury. Happy to bench him in tough away games too, despite his price.

sure he will just more normally now. those 3 attacking returns were what you'd normally see over more like half a season with him, not 3 gameweeks (or 7 if you count where we are now).
let's say he got an assist in gw1, a goal in gw4 and a goal in gw7, i don't think the love would be as strong. i think he's a wave dressed as a tsunami thanks to the clustering at the start (has happened 3 seasons in a row now, not that the past should mean the future will be the same again)

basically i think he'll now be a 6.5 defender priced at 7.3. if he continues his incredible attacking licence from the start of the season then he could arguably be worth more than 7.3 though

              0, 3, 1, 2, 3, 5, 1, 2, 1, 6, 6, 6, 20!

also just to be a 2nd choice penalty taker and get 6 times as many penalties as the first choice penalty taker (who was on the pitch for half the season) is heroic stuff

think it happened 2 times. overall the pens came more early in the games rather than late going against more retrospecitve rubbish from the yaya clan (deep breaths and count to 10).

    Hi all

I am really struggling with what to do here. Am using my wc.

    Proposed:

    Guzan (Given)
    Baines, Moore, Wisdom (Hutton, Chambers)
    Sterling, Chadli, Siggi, ADM (Boyd)
    Aguero, Welbeck, Costa

    Any thoughts?

I wanted Mane, and I wanted one more decent defender, like Gibbs or Bertrand, but this uses all my money (bad start and am learning!).

Can't decide whether Baines is a luxury I can't afford, and whether ADM is worth the money given the fixtures for United.

    Thanks

    Would you rather:

    Heaton
    Ivan, Baines, Clyne
    Schneiderlin, Siggy, Fab, Di Maria,
    Costa, Sturridge, Ulloa

    Or

    Heaton
    Ivan, Chambers, Clyne
    Chadli, Siggy, Fab, Di Maria,
    Costa, Sturridge, Ulloa

I can afford Chadli now but feel that a bit of manouvering to get Baines may be a better option (does require taking a hit though). Option B leave me with no mullah ITB though...

Stoke's home record a big factor here. Having said that, the difference between them is tiny and that might change with more team news next week. If you've being told to bench Siggy, you must have a very decent side because I'm being told to play them both and they're both coming in at over 3.5 I believe.

Thanks for replies , it's interesting, West ham seem to be getting more solid and Burnley couldn't score for love nor money prior to last week

Yeah agreed, I think West Ham's defence rating in RMT will improve in the coming weeks with a bit more data but, right now, it's based on the season to date and, given that, it's thinking that Burnley are more likely to score than Swansea.

          Any thoughts on this team?

          Mannone/McCarthy
          Shawcross-Taylor-Bertrand-(Moore)-(Wisdom)
          Hazard-Sterling-Hendo-Di Maria
          Welbeck-Aguero-Costa

I'm just after getting hendo and Hazard in for Ramsey and Siggy. Wasn't sold on Siggy's stats, and Henderson has some great games coming up. I made my transfers today because Ramsey went down in prize to 8.8 and feared him going down again.

1 duff to Baines and bench Moreno
2 play Moreno and do Miralas to Sanchez (c) but bench siggy
3 save , Moreno and siggy are playable this week, wait for next week ?

if anything he seems to be getting less nailed on. in the second half of last season he was almost starting 2/3 of matches, now he's back down to half and half
