Captain Sensible – Gameweek 9

Our weekly analysis of the Captaincy contenders arrives once again this evening. As always, we take a three-part approach which includes the weekly poll standings, the Opta statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the armband conundrum.

The Captain Poll

A four-goal blitz against Tottenham last time around has ensured Sergio Aguero is this week’s runaway leader, with almost 50% of the votes cast. Up to nine goals for the season, the Man City forward has netted in six of his eight appearances so far, and up against a West Ham side with a single shut-out all season (at home to QPR), Aguero has already risen 0.2 in price heading into the weekend deadline.

Graziano Pelle is some way back in second spot. The Southampton striker has earned just under 16% of votes cast as he prepares for the visit of Stoke – bearing in mind his last three appearances at St Mary’s have returned 13, 9 and 15 points in the FPL game, though, the Italian looks a viable option. Team-mate Dusan Tadic earns 4% of votes after serving up a goal and four assists at home to Sunderland – the playmaker has now produced 34 points in the last three in front of his own supporters.

Diego Costa remains in contention for the league leaders’ trip to Old Trafford. Only 4% are considering the Chelsea forward with the armband due to Jose Mourinho’s mind games, but if given the chance against United’s dodgy defence, he has to be considered, having netted in all but one of his seven appearances.

Raheem Sterling is an armband option for some as Liverpool prepare for a home clash with Hull. Having scored or assisted in five of his seven starts, the youngster has remained a consistent option – after moving to the lone forward role against Real Madrid in midweek, he’s persuaded 3% of Fantasy managers to hand him the captaincy. Gylfi Sigurdsson is similarly backed for Swansea’s home encounter with Leicester, though is struggling for form, having blanked in four of the last five.

Further down, Arsenal and Spurs are overlooked ahead of enticing showdowns with Sunderland and Newcastle. Danny Welbeck (3% of votes) and Alexis Sanchez (1%) face a Black Cats backline that shipped eight to Southampton last weekend, whilst Christian Eriksen (1%) and Nacer Chadli (0.8%) will be looking to take advantage of a Magpies defence that have kept out their opponents just once in the last six.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Sterling playing hull, could score well.
With uniteds firepower upfront mourinho could keep it tight. Can see it being low scoring even with uniteds sieve like defense.

But wouldn't a player with real technique be able to just curl that into the top corner with his right foot?

          • 10 Years
          9 years, 6 months ago

I was kidding. 🙂 I totally agree.... you see a player like Cazorla who takes corners with either foot, and you think why aren't more players putting the practice in.

There's a bit more to it than practice. You need to be playing with both feet all the way through your youth, its not really something you can pick up later.

I totally get people wanting tovhold off making transfers until friday after the pressers, but even if he is going to play, Mourinho wont give us any positive news, so we'll all still be in the same situation.

You're basically giving away the clean sheet, so you're banking on attacking returns.

I have a few decisions to make, but I really want to wait until tomorrow. Currently I don't want to swap out ADM/Costa just because they may not play this weekend, but I want to get Everton cover in immediately. Here's where I am sitting currently with 2 FTs and 0.3 in the bank.

    Krul (Elliot)
    Clyne Wisdom Manquillo Chester Moore
    ADM Siggy Fabs Sterling Tadic
    Costa Aguero Naismith

    Would you..

    A) Manquillo/Chester to Jags/Hutton
    B) Manquillo/ADM to Baines and Eriksen/Chadli
    C) Manquillo/Chester to Alcaraz/Bertrand (I could switch to Hutton for free next week).

    or something else...

thanks. plus with the mass exodus on friday (if he gets ruled out) could mean a 0.2 drop in successive days i guess. 62% ownership will mean transfers galore.

Looks like that. He was decent against City and his passing was excellent. Ade works better with partner striker in example with Kane like last year. For me Soldado is better as sole striker.

I fully expect Soldado to start at the w/e. For the later on I am not so sure. Looks like it depends on form

I'm gonna keep him as I have Obertan first sub. No point in wasting a sub if I'll be getting him back next week.

*No point in wasting 2 transfers. My bad.

Why are people so afraid of taking hits?

    hits are good

if they are calculated correctly yes. i think too many people get hung upon making the return within the same gameweek

Hit the nail on the head pal.

I look further than 1 GW when making any transfer, especially when taking point hits.

I kind of agree. I certainly don't understand people waiting to bring Hazard in. This isn't Man United of 5 years ago. They have a shocking defence.

Hits in their own aren't good. Hits resulting in points earned are good.

Yep, I bet to get the highest possible score over a season, you'd have to take hits.

On that note; anyone disagree with this for -8?

Siggy, Schneiderlin, and Costa -> Erikson, Ramsey, and Berahino

IMO Hits for a long term transfer that you know will get you points is a good idea, I think hits for a one week punt are not such a swell idea, when you make them I think you have to be pretty sure that they will you earn you that -4 back and some, then again no one can under estimate the unpredictability of football 😛

So in other words, -4 hits are long term transfers

anyone believes pelle is not that great and he will stop scoring ? he won't provide not much of goals especially at away games or against big teams imo.

he is not a pacey striker, pretty slow and has an average technique. At away games, especially against big teams, u have to get pass defenders by using your pace, agility or beat them maybe using your long shot. Pelle is an ordinary tall poacher imo.
