Scout Mission – Gameweek 12

With the international break finally behind us, we turn our attentions to domestic matters once again. Chelsea’s trio of midfield options, Diego Costa and Sergio Aguero’s tussle for the armband, Southampton’s form before the fixtures turn nasty and Louis van Gaal’s tactical tinkering are all on this week’s lunchtime menu.

The Blues’ Midfield Options…
With plenty of great fixtures lying in wait for Jose Mourinho’s side, Fantasy managers are currently queuing up to invest in their talented midfield. The three main options all offer different plus points. Cesc Fabregas’ consistency has attracted over 52.5% of FPL managers, though with the Spaniard just one booking away from a ban, those yet to invest will be looking for alternatives. At 8.4, Oscar’s value could yet be the best option, though Eden Hazard has the underlying stats to suggest he’s set to step up. A big performance from any of the three at home to West Brom may well prove a persuasive case for selection over the next few Gameweeks as the league leaders march on relentlessly at the summit.

The Hammers’ Rearguard at Goodison…
Having grabbed a clean sheet against Aston Villa last time out, and with good fixtures to follow, could the east Londoners be about to emerge as viable mid-price defensive assets? To convince us further, they will have to keep out a side that have failed to score just once this season when they meet Everton this weekend, though bearing in mind the Toffees have doubts over seven players, Big Sam will be quietly confident of keeping the Merseysiders at bay.

Costa and Aguero’s armband battle…
Diego Costa and Sergio Aguero go into the weekend as massive favourites in our Captain Poll once again, and owners of both will be naturally torn over whom to hand the armband to. Aguero’s recent form and ability to earn bonus when scoring weighs it in his favour, but Costa has been rested for a fortnight now and, having only failed to score in two of his nine league appearances, has rarely let us down. Given that have great fixtures ahead, getting the captaincy call correct between this pair looks key over the next few weeks, with both having the potential to run riot.

Austin against the Magpies…
The QPR striker has managed four goals in his last three now, including strikes against Chelsea and City, yet still boasts an ownership of 3% going into this weekend. Newcastle, meanwhile, have conceded just once in their previous four, though with captain Fabricio Coloccini ruled out, Austin has the platform to further underline his credentials ahead of a trio of tempting home fixtures against Leicester, Burnley and West Brom in his next five. If West Ham’s Diafra Sakho is ruled out with a back problem again, Austin could be poised to emerge as the most appealing budget frontman ahead of that schedule.

Burnley’s Backline at the Britannia…
The Clarets achieved their first clean sheet in six against Hull in Gameweek 11, taking their tally to four for the season, more than Chelsea or Everton, for example. With three home matches in their following four after Saturday’s trip to Stoke, can Sean Dyche’s replicate the resilience that earned them three successive shut-outs over Gameweeks 3-5, and offer us excellent value for their sub-5.0 price tags? Fantasy managers may yet reconsider the likes of Kieran Trippier is he can kick on from his Gameweek 11 haul of 12 points.

Giroud’s impact on the Gunners…
Arsene Wenger has a tendency to ease players back into action after they return from injury, though his hand may be forced if Danny Welbeck misses out with the hamstring knock sustained whilst on duty with England. Even so, the Gunners boss could opt to move Welbeck to the flank to accommodate Giroud alongside Alexis Sanchez in the front two. With a number of cheaper frontline options thriving right now, Welbeck looks to be on his last chance for many after averaging just 3.5 points per game across his last six, and unless he is able to transfer his international form to the Premier League against former club United this weekend, that 16% ownership looks set to slide.

The Saints’ form before the fixture storm..
Monday night’s trip to Villa precedes a terrible schedule for Ronald Koeman’s outfit, and presents their big assets with a final chance to convince managers to retain their services before the going gets rough. Indeed, many are looking to transfer out in Gameweek 13, but a fruitful performance from Dusan Tadic, if fit, or Graziano Pelle may make some think twice due to the duo’s decent value. Another clean sheet could also persuade us to hold their defence, given they’ve conceded only five goals so far this campaign. Worryingly, though, they’ve only played two of last season’s top eight thus far, and lost both, which perhaps may be read as a sign that temporarily shedding our rearguards of the likes of Ryan Bertrand and Nathaniel Clyne could be a wise move.

Kane’s Minutes at the KC..
The Spurs youngster was handed the full 90 minutes last time out in his first start of season against Stoke, and having notched a brace for England Under-21s in midweek, his form continues to flourish. Mauricio Pochettino moved to 4-2-3-1 for the Potters clash, dropping both Emmanuel Adebayor and Roberto Soldado to the bench: another start for Kane at Hull in this formation will provide us with a much clearer indication of his place in the pecking order from here on in.

Van Gaal’s tactics at the Emirates…
The Dutchman has conceded that he has already tinkered too much with his formation and tactics this season, but his hand could be forced again with Daley Blind sidelined and Luke Shaw and Angel Di Maria also injury concerns for the Gunners encounter. Van Gaal may have Phil Jones and Jonny Evans back in defence, however, and a lack of full back options could even see United line up with a three man backline on Saturday. With Radamel Falcao also in with a chance of featuring, it could be all change further up the field as well, with a midfield diamond and front two a possible option for Van Gaal’s top-heavy squad.

Baines, Hutton, Downing, Tadic, Wilson. As long as 2 are fit I'm ok. Tadic and Wilson could both go if confirmed out, as they're on the way out anyway.

There's the old mantra often heard around here about Leighton Baines: "Never captain, never bench". However, does that wisdom still hold? In the first 11 gameweeks this season, you'd be quite fine if you had _always_ either captained or benched Baines based on fixture difficulty.

I divided Everton's matches so far this season to easier and tougher than average based on the difficulty rankings that are used in the season ticker (the average difficulty is 1112.125). Of course, you could have just concluded that ARS, CHE, liv and mun were tough...

Anyway, in the 7 easier fixtures, his average score has been 9, with four double digit scores. Is that not captain material?

In the 4 tougher fixtures, his average score has been 1.5. Benching him for your rotational cheapie of choice would never have been a big mistake. Granted, had that penalty against ManU gone in, that average would have been significantly better.

Of course, I probably won't be benching him any time soon (unless Man City away, hmm...), but are we being silly overlooking him as a captaincy option?

I've had him for 4 weeks and been tempted to (C) twice, but it feels like too much of a risk. It probably shouldn't do any more, you're right, and he has the double bonus of defensive returns if he blanks offensively, and vice versa, but it still worries me.

I'd never bench, you'll always kick yourself for benching your premium defender in the even that he actually pulled something off (which is always likely), assist and bonus for cross to Fellaini away at Man City two years back.

I would agree with this, if not for the presence and form of Aguero in my team. Still, if Aguero/Costa stop firing or get injured then Baines might become a good option, but its all relative.

My average score with Aguero captained is 15.3 in 3-4 gw's (including the double-points), which is the highest of all my captains, so I have no reason not to keep the armband on him.

Arsène Wenger has revealed the following team news ahead of Saturday's game against Manchester United:

    on Giroud and Arteta…
Giroud and Arteta are both available. It's just a question of how ready they are. But they are available.

on relying on Welbeck while Giroud was out…
Yes, and on Sanchez as well. But we have Giroud back, we have Walcott back. Slowly they will
integrate into the team again and give us different options.

    on Koscielny and Debuchy…
Koscielny and Debuchy are doing well, they are out on the field [working] again. We have to see now. Usually field work is three weeks away from full group training. Then there is fitness. It looks straightforward for Debuchy. It's not inflammation, it's just repairing surgery. For Koscielny, it depends how well he responds to training. At the moment he looks good.

    on Ozil…
Ozil is doing well but he will not be ready before the start of 2015.

last gameweek 66% owned Aguero and 62% owned Costa
sooo even though ownership might not be independent, multiplying the two to get 40% of teams owning both won't be too far off I reckon

Maybe 35% have both because it's expensive to have both

My word. Still a lot of abject nonsense talked about Welbeck. And it is abject, and says everything about the talker, and nothing about Welbeck.

He is a top, top striker. Not just in my opinion.

Once again, you have raised this STUPID response.

I do watch games - all the time - and have watched a lot of Welbeck.

You need to consider how to have an open mind, and be a better observer.

Well why don't you actually put forward a written response to why you think Wellbeck is a better player instead of just posting a cryptic message followed by a members table link that half the users on the site can't access?

Anyway, fair enough if you think Wellbeck is the better player, he very well may be - I just don't think he is in my opinion.

Welbz has to go after this but opting to avoid the austin bandwagon (trap? I mean seriously qpr striker lol) and loking at the following options to replace welbeck with
    A) coleman, funded by welbz to kane
    B) bony, funded by clyne to yun

    Which is stronger?

    Krul/guzan
    Baines COLEMAN azpi (chambers wisdom)
    Sanchez haz sig downing (boyd)
    Aguero costa KANE

    Or

    Krul/guzan
    Baines azpi chambers (YUN wisdom)
    Sanchez haz sig downing (boyd)
    Aguero costa BONY

Funnily enough chambers rotates perfectly with kane and yun in both cases

I'm planning on moving Berahino on too, Sakho, Austin and Ayoze all still options!

Not convinced by Eto'o, do you think he's nailed on now? Lots of options for Everton in those attacking positions.

I'm Team Hazard all the way so I like that one, not sure about captain over Aguero mind.

I do - because he is doing a superb job of holding the ball up in attacking positions, which will go down a storm with Martinez.

I could do those last two next week, but I fear that now is the time for Hazard.

I may just do Di Maria to Hazard, subject to news.

Does anyone else think that FPL have become too quick to flag players? They seem to flag players on the slightest hint of a knock, whether reported by the media, press, player themselves, social media or just that the player looks slightly sheepish as they are subbed. This information is often wrong.

This disrupts the price change system as NTI is reset, thresholds increased and players who aren't in the know start selling prematurely causing price falls.

FPL probably think they are helping casual players by flagging in this way but in reality they are not. Many people have sold players flagged during this Break but if it's confirmed in the Pressers that they are OK then they have done so for no reason.

I think that FPL should only react to information coming directly from the club, via their official website.

          In a way it's actually a hinderance

Some sell players expecting them to be injured

Others are then backed into a corner to sell due to the price drop

But imagine it the opposite way (which I think is what FPL are doing)

You don't flag a player.,player is transferred in en mass. Come the presser said player is confirmed out. many disgruntled players

I think its fair enough to be honest, you shouldn't have to trawl twitter/ffs/bbc to know who is doubtful.

But if a player is really injured, the club will comment and that will be more accurate. We are currently seeing flags based on pure speculation.

Both teams have scored in 5 of Stoke's last 6 games. Burnley have scored in 4 of their last 5 games. They will see this as winnable, should see both teams going for it.
