Spot the Differential – Gameweek 13

Today marks the start of a hectic festive period which treats Fantasy managers to eight Gameweeks over the upcoming 34 days. As we head towards this morning’s deadline, we roll out another trio of overlooked alternatives for your perusal – after a slow start to their respective seasons, each of our contenders is starting to find their form ahead of some encouraging fixtures.

Rickie Lambert

A dream move from Southampton back to his hometown club began to look more like the stuff of nightmares as the 32-year-old quickly slipped down the Anfield pecking order. It’s taken an injury to Mario Balotelli to finally persuade Brendan Rodgers to allow Lambert a starting berth and the summer signing has been quick to justify his first-team inclusion – firing goals in back-to-back matches against Palace and Ludogorets.

With his manager’s praise ringing in his ears, Lambert’s displays look to have secured him that role up front as the Reds prepare for a kind run of three matches over the next week.

Home clashes against Stoke and Sunderland sandwich a midweek trip to Leicester, and with all three opponents struggling defensively, Lambert will be optimistic of extending that streak as the festive schedule heats up. Available for a mere 6.9 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), he looks, at the very least, a viable short-term contender as the Reds attempt to get their stuttering season back on track, and with 29 goals and 19 assists in the previous two campaigns, he’s more than capable of producing the goods if his manager affords him playing time.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain

The former Southampton starlet is set for his sixth consecutive league appearance as the Gunners travel to troubled West Brom later today. With the Arsenal treatment room rarely empty, Oxlade-Chamberlain has benefitted from a spate of injuries in recent weeks and turned in a series of impressive displays which have helped cement a spot on the right.

Although he’s failed to pick up the Fantasy returns his performances have merited, Oxlade-Chamberlain’s underlying stats suggest he shouldn’t be overlooked. From Gameweek 8 onwards, he sits fourth amongst midfielders for chances created (16) and touches in the box (32), whilst his total of 12 attempts is just three fewer than Chelsea’s Eden Hazard, for example.

With Theo Walcott still sidelined through injury, the 6.4-priced Oxlade Chamberlain will be unleashed against a Baggies backline that has conceded twice in five of their last six tomorrow. Following that, showdowns with Stoke, Newcastle, Liverpool and QPR in the subsequent five suggest he could be the ideal solution for those on the search for a mid-price alternative in the centre of the park.

Jefferson Montero

The summer signing looks to have finally established himself as a regular in Garry Monk’s first-team over the last few matches. Montero initially found himself behind Nathan Dyer and Wayne Routledge in the Swansea pecking order, but after starting each of the last four, he arrives on the radar ahead of a very kind schedule which hands the Welsh club four home fixtures (CPL, QPR, TOT, AVL) in the next six.

While Gylfi Sigurdsson is likely to garner most of the attention in light of that run, Montero could be a real under-the-radar option. The South American has earned an assist in each of his last two starts at the Liberty, and as evidence by his recent display against Arsenal, his trickery out wide looks a key weapon in the Welsh side’s armoury.

Encouragingly, over those last four appearances, Montero’s total of 18 touches in the penalty box equals Sigurdsson’s seven and Wilfried Bony’s 11 combined. If he can step up his close-range menace and fire off attempts with a little more regularity, Montero, at just 5.7 in FPL, could be a canny mid-price acquisition as Monk looks to cement a top-six spot over the festive period.

    Best option?

    A) Krul to Guzan for free
    B) Baines to Azpi for free
    C) Duff to Hutton for free
    D) Save transfer and rely on bench of Tadic, Boyd and Clyne

Can't sleep anymore, its 5AM here in the US and still cant decide my captain this week.

Please help I need your input. This is how I narrowed it down so far.

Reasons for (c) between the Argentinian ADM and Chilean Sanchez. (I'm Chilean btw)

Sanchez is in the best form of his career, the goal vs Dortmund was fascinating and may benefit from the return of Giroud. This maybe a good or bad thing as he just played 90 hard fought minutes just three days ago. I still can't forgive ADM for missing that chip shot at the end to seal the game vs Arsenal. Plus, I don't agree whatsoever with LVG playing him on the right, I hate when coaches take players out of the natural position and ADM clearly looks uncomfortable there.

ADM did not play a game midweek and has the fixture advantage. Home field advantage is very important in my opinion. Hull are very shaky, the proved that with their loss to Burnley. West Brom is a much better team, they proved that last week by shutting out Chelsea in the 2nd half with only 10 men. The 1st goal you can argue was slightly offside and 2nd goal was just a mental lapse.

Also what ever happened to the 'never' captain an early game player myth? Aguero was the exception this year vs TOT.

    History
Last three times ManU played Hull at Old Trafford 3:1, 4:0, 3:2 so lots of goals
Last three times Arsenal played at WestBrom 1:1 1:1 2:1

All that being said, right now the (C) is still on Sanchez but something tells me I should switch it to ADM. I don't know what to do. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Easy: never switch. I repeat: never switch. Keep it on Alexis, both are fine choices.

Sanchez out of the two. The early captain myth is just people on here scared of watching the other games knowing that damage limitation is the best possible outcome.

Not sure I believe he will play deep this week. We're at home, he's in a good vein of goal scoring form, LVG has called for us to be more ruthless and seal victories quicker.

good goal scoring record against Hull too. what do you think

                  AdM Sanchez Costa Aguero

The main worry is double up on United, might be wearing my red tinted glasses.

Costa (vc), reckon I should play safe? 2nd place in ML likely to cap Costa. 20 points ahead. Hovering between 5-7k in recent weeks...just want a half decent week!

Interesting one. I'd probably rule ADM out of those, because I believe Rooney is a better option. Aguero too has a tough fixture against a solid defense so that leaves us with Alexis,Costa and Rooney... Costa might score but as we know he needs at least a brace to grab the maximum bonus. On the other hand, Rooney is a bap magnet. What are your thoughts on Alexis?

that's how i see it as well, Rooney is a bap magnet compared to Costa.

Sanchez is a good pick. Stats point to a poor WBA def as well but I take it with a pinch of salt personally...last 4 game stats skewed after Chelsea horrow show.

But that's just it right? There are no stand out picks this week 🙂

I would pick Alexis most probably had I been in your position, because I as you know I like going by the stats! 😀

    Rooney vs SWA(14),
    Agüero vs ars(12),
    Agüero vs TOT(38),
    Agüero vs whu(4).

    A total of 68 points from 4 = An average of 17.

Can't look past Sanchez myself. WBA rolled over for Chelsea, walking around towards the end, and I think Arsenal wouldn't take their foot off the gas.

        0.1 off Speroni/Clyne > Fabianski/Azpill

So I'm doing Clyne > Rangel now and Speroni > Courtious tonight

Baines, Clyne. If Baines isn't injured play him instead of Dummett.

I have Fab since gw1. Been intending to upgrade to Hazard last few gws, but other priorities always seem to pop up and never manage to get the transfer done.

Now it looks like I'll only be able to get him with Jan wc.

Anyone else in same boat? Should I worry about missing out on a Hazard explosion given that Fab is no fpl slouch himself?

In the long run they will both rack up the points, so probably not too much to worry about. Have only just bought in Fab myself as couldn't afford Hazard.
