Captain Sensible – Gameweek 15

Our analysis of the Gameweek captaincy contenders arrives once again this evening as Fantasy managers quickly turn their attentions to the weekend’s fixtures. As always, we take a three-part approach, which includes the weekly poll standings, the Opta statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the armband conundrum.

The Captain Poll

After his midweek demolition of Sunderland, Sergio Aguero is head and shoulders above any other candidate as City prepare for the visit of Everton. Selected by 52% of voters so far, the Argentine – in spite of his superb season – has surprisingly blanked in three of his six home appearances and has managed only one double-figure haul at the Etihad to date. The Toffees roll up to Manchester in poor defensive form, though – without a clean sheet on their travels all season, Roberto Martinez’ side have conceded in five of the last six Gameweeks.

Chelsea duo Diego Costa and Eden Hazard are both fancied to deliver the goods away to Newcastle. Costa has delivered more yellow cards than goals on the road (five to four) and has notched just once in his last three away trips but having missed out due to suspension in midweek, he’ll be raring to go against the injury-hit Magpies. Hazard has yet to score on his travels this season – indeed, the Belgian has managed only two assists away from Stamford Bridge all season and has blanked in each of his last four appearances on the road.

Charlie Austin’s superb home form brings the QPR top scorer into consideration, with 7% of the votes cast. The budget striker has racked up four goals and two assists in his last four at Loftus Road and, up against a Burnley side with a single clean sheet on their travels, he’s looking for a third 10+ points haul in front of his own fans which would fire the R’s out of the drop zone.

After netting Villa’s winner at Palace on Tuesday evening, Christian Benteke is amongst the favourites for a plum home clash with Leicester. The Foxes arrive without suspended skipper Wes Morgan and look unlikely to improve a defensive record which has seen them keep out their opponents in just one of the last 10 Gameweeks.

Alexis Sanchez is also in contention as the Gunners roll up to Stoke. Unlike Chelsea’s Hazard, the Chilean has delivered on the road – four of his nine league goals have arrived outside of the Emirates, suggesting he could be a real differential against a Potters side with a single shut-out since Gameweek 3.

So Kun isn't a good idea for captaining? With the CL fixure coming up?

Players can play 3 games a week.

He'll only be subbed if they are winning comfortably, and if they are winning comfortably, you can bet you he has a haul.

With Dzeko out, they don't really have a replacement for Aguero.

Aguero is in tip top condition, so I have no worries.

"It shows exactly how vital his goals have been to Arsenal this season, [insert smug patronising part of comment here]".

          No it doesn't.

It is if you think about it. You can't magically remove him from the team without changing the whole course of events. It's like trying to replay history without the existence of Adolf Hitler. Impossible. Nothing meaningful could be deducted from it.

In terms of Arsenal, the preparation would be different, the formation could be different, the starting line up and substitutions would have been different, the 11th player who would have played instead of Sanchez may have scored a goal or two instead of him. It's a comparison without any relevance.

I'm not sure why you would laugh off KURTINHO's comment. If you applied some logic you would agree with him.

How is this counted? Without his goals, they would have 16 points. Without him altogether, that's more difficult to estimate.

More interesting is that without Eriksen's 5 goals, Spurs would only have 13 points in the league.

      1. Your Mum's Athletic
        • 12 Years

        His goals yes

        1. Camp No No
          • 10 Years
          9 years, 5 months ago

Yeah, actually that is right, Arsenal would have 9 points less, just 14, without his goals.

Anyway, these are a bit silly tables and you can't really read the team's dependence on a player from them, even if it suggests the possibility.

What these table do tell about is the importance of the goals that a player has scored, and much more telling is when the team would not drop points without some players' goals. For example, removing Messi's goals from Barcelona would not drop a single point from their La Liga counter (but would lose 2 points in CL). Tells that his goals are not actually that needed most of the time, they happen when the team is winning anyway.

            • 11 Years
            9 years, 5 months ago

But how many of them are the match-winning goals so to speak. A hat-trick might not be very important if they won 4-0, but if he scored the first 3 then really those 3 are more important than the 4th.

These tables are practically useless tabloid rubbish, just like the 'If only goals from English players counted' tables

            1. Camp No No
              • 10 Years
              9 years, 5 months ago

Yeah, but even if you check that (did it), most of Messi's goals are when they're already up by one or two, or four.

            2. Camp No No
              • 10 Years
              9 years, 5 months ago

It's only 4 goals that Messi has scored this season in a situation where his team was not already winning. Against Sevilla, his opener was matched, and then Rakitic and neymar turned that 1-1 to 3-1, after which Messi finished his hat trick. I mean just that. These are not important goals. However, it does not mean that Messi wasn't important for Barcelona. Of course he is. He cannot be reduced to a number of winning goals.

if he hadnt been scoring goals he would have been dropped and someone else would have come in...

I saw a table last season of Liverpool without Suarez and Sturridge. Possibly the dumbest table ive ever seen.

    Is Tadic worthy this weekend?

      Let me rephrase this:
is it worthy to buy tadic this weekend? And will be sanchez playing? Or should i replace him with one between Benteke/Austin?

I got rid a couple of weeks ago. He really has just had the 1 really good week against a woeful team.
I'd take a hit and dump him.

Outside the hat trick it would be 1 goal in 2 matches. If you count out just the goals, not the matches, I can soon show you that outside his goals, Suarez scored 0 goals in 33 matches last season.

Jose Mourinho's Chelsea have never won at St James' in four attempts. 2 draws and 2 losses.

    Sanchez / Fabregas / Hazard / Sigurdsson / Boyd
    Austin / Aguero(C)

Subs: Krul / Ayoze / Jagielka / Moore

    Fab
    Baines Azpili Yun
    Fab Sanchez Siggy Downing
    Kun (c) Bony Austin

    Bench: Shyte

    Thoughts?

Tempted by Benteke but don't have reason to drop Bony. Both are very good Strikers.

if u have siggy, then could be a good reason to drop bony. Swa are not great on their travels and doubling up could be an issue

Same here. Bony and Kane both decent atm. Bony will be first to go I think. So many options up front.
