The ScoutCast – Episode 146 – Closer

Granville and I get cosy on a two-seater sofa – within touching distance – just how he likes it.

In truth, my-host is getting too close for comfort: the mini-league gap is down to just 42 points, with Granville relentlessly chiping away at my previously unassailable lead.

We review Gameweek 16’s events, including my oh-so bitter Dzeko pill, before discussing De Gea’s uncanny form, the demise of Leighton Baines and my latest set-to with Jonty: are there better options than Diego Costa up top?

The regulars wrap themselves around that lot, while Granville, thankfully, keeps his hands to himself.

Snuggle up to the noise via this link or get up close and personal via the player below…

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Thing about Baines is that even if Mirallas takes the assist potential away from him ,he is still on penalties .. And Everton havent started of well but they are not the worst defensively . So even if we consider very conservative number of 5 more cleansheets and 3 more penalties in the remaining 22 games . Assuming 10 bonus points , Baines will still score around 90 more points . If things go a bit better and we throw in one more penalty , a couple more cleansheets and a couple of assists this can be 110-120 points . And this is very very possible . So this is somewhere aroung 4.3 to 5 PPG for the remaining games . To put this into perspective , someone like Sanchez who has done really well so far has given 6.7 PPG and he costs 60% more than Baines with around 30-40% PPG more than Baines .

So , to Summarize , Baines still provides exceptional value .. Think again before you sell him !!

The only alarming thing was to see even Barkley take FKs off Baines.

West Ham have survived two Seasons with just three penalties, one of which we missed.

3 in 22 is a tad optimistic, imo.

Well Mirallas dribbling in the box sure as hell increases the penalties potential

Agree, attacking points of course will trickle in but with fewer clean sheets than Dummet, Chester or Poglo from West Brom hes too expensive.

Baines will be #1 or #2 defender at the end of the season.

Either stick the whole way, or be brave enough to hop on and off and hope to catch his points. Obviously the latter is a dumbass strategy so I would stick, or just sell and ignore Baines' hauls.

its not silly to hop on and off to catch his points...taking last season as an example..many of his points only come at the last quarter of the season...and i got them all...

and this season u would have benefited the most if u only get him from gw8

Well if it's a strategy to spend 4-5 transfers on Baines in and out of the team, feel free to.

I got him from GW8-12, hopped off after. On hindsight it was for the best, but I don't think it's a long term strategy to hop on and off Baines trying to catch his hauls. I hopped on/off with the intent to take advantage of a block of fixtures, so there has to be some sort of plan with Baines. Either i) stick with him through thick and thin, or ii) plan certain blocks of fixtures where you'd like to own him and don't cry about it when you miss a haul.

yeah though if u take out baines for his tough fixtures to maybe a cheaper def with good fixtures and u re-invest the cash it would probably end up with more points even if u might miss a haul here n there.

of cos when i say tough fixtures its like soton who has bad fixtures for a long period

Yea too many combinations to ascertain if it was a good decision. For example, ridding myself of Baines to Hutton allowed me to upgrade Di Maria and Pelle to Hazard and Rooney (then Rooney > Bony when he got injured). Big time points swing from sale of Baines.

But it could have easily gone t*ts up. It's a risk as Baines could explode at anytime, 20-25 point haul even. Which could eliminate entire ML leads.

Of course he is worth it.
Everton will win this weekend, I'm pretty certain.
I'll go as far as to say they will keep a CS as well.
And I don't even own Baines, I have Coleman

No Tadic. No Wanyama . No Scheneiderlin.
Mane, Fonte and Clyne all have 4 yellows.
Confidence all time low after losing to Sheffield (5 in a row now is it?)

      Positive thoughts!

Saints have a chance. I think Mane, Fonte and Clyne being on 4 yellows doesn't have an effect on the result. It's not going to be easy for Everton if you think so. But who am I to say, I ditched Baines this week. 😀

Both moves can be justified no worries. Just gotta stay positive your move will work out.

I just think it might make them play a bit more cautious, since they already have players missing...

They don't get better for a while... I think its best to get back on that horse with your Jan WC, but not before then. Siggy > Sterling could work out a lot sooner, looking at the fixtures.

If Arsenal had Koscielny fit right now, I'd daresay a 3-4-1-2 formation could have been ideal for the team right now.

*Firstly, their CBs (Mertesacker, Chambers) are either slow or very inexperienced, so 3 together wouldn't have been bad.

*The FBs (Bellerin, Gibbs) are probably the most attacking in the league after Everton's, would give them more freedom to bomb forward.

*In the absence of Arteta, their CMs (Ox, Cazorla etc) are not exactly orthodox CMs, So I guess, 3 at the back means more protection.

*We have seen how lethal Sanchez is down the middle. Wouldn't he be ideal in the hole?

*Two very different strikers (Welbeck, Giroud) but both who need to play down the middle. Moreover, Welbeck can drift wide with Ox/Cazorla/Sanchez bombing forward, keeps the form alright.

I know that is something that will never happen, but just a thought.

I still think Bellerin is more attacking, and possesses more potential than Jenkinson.
As for Cresswell, I really like him but want to see him impress for 2-3 seasons in a row like Gibbs has.

I don't think Bellerin and Gibbs will be able to do the wing back job. Need high fitness levels for that, Gibbs will get an injury after one game in that role.

Also good defensive mid is needed around which the team can move, Arsenal don't have that. Too complex a formation for the tactically naive Arsenal players imo

      1. Saniul

The players are not tactically naive, actually. Ox and Cazorla are both extremely technical players.

And I'd play one of Flamini/Coquelin and one of Ox/Cazorla in that midfield two.

Its very difficult to adapt to a complete change in shape like that, especially at the busiest time of the season, just enough to focus on your matches without putting the hours in to learn a system.

I get your point though, not sure how far I agree with all of it. What I do like is the bit you mentioned about how Giroud, Welbeck and Sanchez all seem most threatening through the middle. All three are hardworking team players, and I think Arsenal would do well with two up front - maybe not every match, but they have the players to work a 4-4-2 again. Podolski's best position is alongside a strike partner, as well. Would be great to watch!

      1. Saniul
        • 11 Years
        9 years, 4 months ago

For some reason, I've given up on Podolski making a mark for Arsenal in the future, for no fault of his.

The problem with a 4-4-2 is with two up front, Flamini gets exposed way too easily, after all he is no Matic.

And as you mentioned, the trio plus Ox/Cazorla are all way more effective down the middle, and with our best central players (Wilshere, Ramsey, Ozil) missing, I just thought playing wingbacks could be worth a shot.

        1. Ludo
          • 10 Years
          9 years, 4 months ago

It would be a change. Could be more like a Pellegrini 4-4-2, similar to the Invincibles. Two out and out holding midfielders allowing for attacking full backs, two up front, and wide players with lots of freedom to come inside and create. Playing both Flamini and Arteta, and asking Wilshere or Ramsey to be more reserved when they come back, something they're well capable of. Of course, there's not really that much in it between a 4-2-3-1 and a 4-4-2, but someone as direct as Sanchez or Welbeck in the hole would be great against weaker teams.

When Demichelis was playingn more regularly earlier this season I'm sure he was a goal threat and scored a few from corners? My only concern with Zaba is that Sagna is a great rotation option, until Kompany is back Demi only has to worry about Nastjasic who is out of favour and getting sold in Jan

    repost

sooo Walcott dropped to 8.9m and is about to be fit again, might be a more tempting option than Fabregas or Di Maria..

last season he had 72 points in 860 minutes and while I'm not the biggest fan of this metric that's a comfortable 7.5 points per 90 min (5.1 ppg but had didn't play full games for a regular run there)

but he's coming back from an ACL so no guarantee he's as explosive (though I think he should be fine loosely because I'm a pacy player who had his ACL done and was just about as quick when I got back nearly and I didn't have the benefit of world class rehab lol)

If you can afford Boyd>Eriksen for a hit, yeah would be worth it long term as you get a quality mid while keeping Sigurdsson.

I think the solution with Sigurdsson is to pick a mid to rotate him with rather than sell him. He's still a good FPL pick.

Some new faces around, appreciate your input.

    A) Marney > Eriksen for free
Play a 3-5-2 with Haz-Sanchez-Sigg-Downing-Eriksen-Costa Bony. Dzeko bench.

    B) Dzeko + Marney > Austin/Giroud + Eriksen (-4)
    Bench Siggy with a Haz-Sanchez-Downing-Eriksen-Costa-Bony-(Giroud/Austin)

      B Shifty with Austin.

This is probably the best weekend to take a hit, right before the cup (if that matters to you)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the qualification this week is based solely on your GW rank (which doesn't take into account any hits)?

tinkering with a January wildcard team (built with GW21 in mind for reference)..not bad t'all..

    Lloris
    Shaw - Wisdom - Duff - Yun - Hutton
Sanchez -Hazard - Walcott - Downing - Boyd
    RVP - Kun - Kane

not sure if Kane will actually be an option still or if Yun will be back in time for it to make sense to include him (as the rotation of the other 4 sees me through until GW24 with 3 blues)

Check out Sunderland's remaining home fixtures. I'll be looking to work that into a rotation, not sure whether that will be in goal or defence, or who they go with, though. Shaw is an interesting pick.

    So Sigurdsson...

He's nailed on for Swansea who are a good, fluid attacking team that can turn on the style on their day. Abit of a homeboy, but he is involved in ~60% of SWA's goals at home, ~30% away. Form is waning so understand he's on the chopping board for many.

With the money from downgrading Aguero (unless RVP is the replacement), it could be fair to assume most managers have between 2.5-4m in the bank.

Would it be a better strategy to have a playable 5th mid in order to bench Siggy at times, instead of selling a decent FPL prospect altogether? At least until the Jan WC.

    1. tw
      • 12 Years
      9 years, 4 months ago

could be. I currently have siggy and downing as 4th/5th mids

    2. Joggers Nipple
      • 14 Years
      9 years, 4 months ago

      Doing exactly that.

      Silva Hazard Sanchez Downing

      bench Siggy this week

Over Xmas we will all surely be hit by a random rotation so a strong front 8 up to Jan WC works well imo

      1. Shifty
        • 10 Years
        9 years, 4 months ago

100% we'll be hit by random rotation, especially with Costa. The big names would probably be rested in easier games, so unless the team is struggling to beat the opponent, won't come off the bench.

I'd rather have Downing/Siggy off the bench than Marney/Boyd. Besides, they're both popular players so benching points wouldn't hurt that much either. For example, you'd get to bench Downing next week when plenty would be forced to play him in an unfavourable fixture.

    3. ALegendJ
      • Fantasy Football Scout Member
      • 10 Years

I try not to bench players who can score anywhere at any time. Siggy hit the woodwork and had goal-line clearance in couple of away matches if recall correctly. If I owned Siggy, he would play every match, or get rid. Nothing in the middle

      1. Shifty
        • 10 Years
        9 years, 4 months ago

That's abit simplistic though. If you benched Siggy this week but have Bony, you could get away with it and have Siggy back for favourable fixture next week and 3 other mids with good fixtures, Downing on the bench vs Chelsea away.

Whereas if you sold Siggy already, you would have to play Downing in an unfavourable fixture. I don't see the problem with benching points.

I agree, but my way of a 5th midfielder is a very cheap one who is guaranteed at least 2 points should any unexpected rotation happen (Boydinho) 😉 I would hate having a £6m or £7m player on my bench who could score.

There is no wrong way to do, I think it is just a matter of opinion.

          1. Shifty
            • 10 Years
            9 years, 4 months ago

Yea it's also a function of how strong the other 7 attackers are. Depends on the team dynamics I guess. But it shouldn't be brushed under the table considering the fixture pile up.It's both a risky/risk averse strategy in some way. Could argue both rather strongly.

    4. Ludo
      • 10 Years
      9 years, 4 months ago

I think that Swansea and Siggy'a away record so far can be put down in large part to fixtures - I expect more from Hull and QPR - two of their next three trips - than the games they've had so far.

That said, I'm not totally averse to the idea of rotating him occasionally in tough matches. Jon Walters, for example, while far from a sexy pick, is in good form, and has WBA/lei/QPR for Siggy's next three tough games as I see it (liv/CHE/sou in GWs 19, 22 and 23).

      1. Shifty
        • 10 Years
        9 years, 4 months ago

good spot there with Walters, which gives credence to possibly rotating Siggy. At the start of the season, Siggy was often benched by some managers due to his friendly price but his form meant they were burned.

For those who have stuck with him since the start, he's still 6.0m. If he could be benched then, why can't he be benched now?
