Suspensions

The Suspension Tightrope – Gameweek 19

Three more players succumbed to the lure of the Suspension Tightrope after earning their fifth cautions of the campaign during the Gameweek 19 fixtures. West Ham defender James Tomkins will miss the New Year’s Day home clash with West Brom, Man City midfielder Fernando can also put his feet up on Thursday when the champions entertain Sunderland, whilst Liverpool’s Martin Skrtel also gets the day off as Leicester pay visit to Anfield.

This means that 34 players ultimately fell foul of the five-card Tightrope, which is now extended to 10 yellows on January 1. Those players previously on four cautions– including the likes of Yaya Toure and Robin van Persie – can now breathe a little easier, having successfully avoided a one-match ban. The 10-yellow Tightrope will now run until April 12 (inclusive), which currently takes in all of Gameweek 32.

Unfortunately for Sunderland’s Lee Cattermole, he’s already just one booking away from toppling off after collecting his ninth caution during the goalless draw at Villa. West Ham’s Winston Reid is just two away on eight cautions, followed by Diego Costa and Neil Taylor on seven apiece, with Chelsea midfield pair Cesc Fabregas and Nemanja Matic joined by Southampton’s Graziano Pelle on six bookings.

A further four players joined the banned list at the weekend after receiving their marching orders. Morgan Schneiderlin is set to miss Southampton’s home match against Arsenal after earning a pair of yellows during the 1-1 draw with Chelsea and Hull’s Stephen Quinn sits out the KC encounter with Everton after being dismissed for denying a goalscoring opportunity in the weekend loss to Leicester.

The Foxes’ Paul Konchesky was also sent off in that 1-0 win and is unavailable for the New Year’s Day trip to Liverpool, whilst Fabian Delph is suspended for three matches after being dismissed for serious foul play in Aston Villa’s home draw with Sunderland. The midfielder will sit out the next two Gameweeks and also miss the FA Cup Third Round clash with Blackpool before returning to contention at home to Liverpool on January 17 – in the last couple of hours, the FA rejected Villa’s appeal over his weekend departure.

Earlier today, Papiss Cisse accepted a violent conduct charge for his elbow challenge on Seamus Coleman last Sunday. The Newcastle striker is banned for three matches with immediate effect but, bearing in mind he’s set to depart for the African Cup of Nations, could be sidelined until the start of February, depending on Senegal’s progress in the tournament.

Those eight players join previous incumbents Olivier Giroud and Tom Huddlestone on the festive naughty step. Giroud serves the second of a three-match suspension away to Southampton on Thursday before completing his ban in the FA Cup Third Round clash with Hull, meaning he will be available for Gameweek 21. The Tigers’ Tom Huddlestone will sit out the last of a four-match ban at home to Everton.

Jonjo Shelvey has since been charged for violent conduct for an altercation with Emre Can during Swansea’s loss to Liverpool last night, though Raheem Sterling seems likely to escape retrospective action for an incident in the same fixture, as it appears the match officials witnessed his set-to with Federico Fernandez.

Those are the benched ones. Clichy or Zab may not play so have hutton in reserve.

You think Silva over Austin. I can't decide.

    So last week I did:

Baines.Chambers and Giroud to Zabaleta, Skrtel and Bojan.

Zab got 0 and could easily be rested this week.
Skrtel got me 1 point but is now suspended.
Bojan play brilliantly again and was unlucky to come away with no points but is now injured.

What I would do for a slice of luck right now...

Darth Vader is a paragon for justice. There are two incidents, both in front of the ref or assistant, one resulting in a ban and the other probably should so. Shelvey's was worse imo but attempting to hit a player, even a little slap like Raheem did, is supposed to go under violent conduct. Consistency is all I want. The standard of reffing consistency has gotten worse again this season.

I understand the point, you know I'm usually one for the human touch (ahem!). It's just consistency. The opposite argument, as Shelvey, Swansea and Rodgers even said, was that Jonjo was trying to get his arm up, swung it back and accidentally smacked Can one. On the other hand, Raheem went intentionally for his man. So it can be chopped and changed one way or another but it would serve as a good lesson to Sterling to not lash out. He's too important for Pool at the moment for that kind of stuff.

Except it's a professional football game, not a country's prison system. My point was that if they are told to enforce a rule in which an action like Benteke's gets him sent off, they have to apply a similar ban to Raheem's or at the very least rescind Benteke's one which they didn't I believe therefore they have it clearly set that this is a red card offence.

The bit that doesn't sit well with me is that Can went down like the proverbial sack of spuds when caught by Shelvey, whereas Fernandez just stared back at Sterling. I think Fernandez and Swansea should be credited with their behaviour, but the FA seem to think the opposite.

So just because of the ref's incompetence, the FA have to be incompetent too? What a joke.

Oh the FA has it's own incompetence regardless of referees. This is just a circle of incompetence created by the FA insisting that if something was 'seen' it can never be punished even if it was only partially seen by one official.

What do you suggest ? They can't go back and review every single decision and it would take too long to review stuff like this during the match with video evidence .

They have a dubious goals panel, a dubious red card/not red card panel would deal with this.

I'm not saying they should review every decision. Just the blatantly intentional ones that surely cause enough controversy for the FA to notice that their ref got it wrong.

This isn't consistency. Consistency would be banning Sterling for a very similar incident to the Benteke one that got him banned for 3 matches.

      Pantilimon
      Zabaleta, Wisdom, Terry
      Sigurdsson, Downing, Silva, Hazard, Sánchez
      Austin, Costa

      (Elliot, Kane, Taylor, Clyne)

      0 FT, 1.9 ITB, anything worth a hit ?

Best replacements for Yaya and Bony? Right now i'm on Cazorla and Rooney but i already have Sanchez and both of them against Southampton might be too much. Who else can be a good replacement? Coutinho? Sterling?

    Hi guys,

    Current. Team

    Fabi/ krul

    Azpil / zaba / wisdom / yun / Alcaraz

    Haz / Sanchez / siggy / silva / Boyd

    Austin : Costa / bony

    1FT 1.1 itb

I'm thinking bony & yun out for benteke & cresswell.

Yay or nay? Any other recommendations?

    Thanks

Nay. Can you do Yun > Jenkinson? Then Bony > Benteke for free next week.

Nope, if take out just yun then can get 5.0 defender max.

Not worried about bony being on bench this week?

          Jenkinson costs 5.0.

Bony might be benched but he can easily score a goal v QPR if he comes on.

    Poor from the FA.

What is this, special bans for Suarez?

    Cisse 9 games
    Sterling 3, Shelvey 3.

How is Sterling getting away with that...Oh well. 😉
