The FPL Winter Wildcard Discussion – Part 2

With January Wildcards now active, we wanted to offer the community a regular article to look at the key strategies, players and teams we should be considering. This regular article will focus on the thoughts of one of the Fantasy Football Scout team on their winter Wildcard progress. Feel free to help them with any deliberations they have and use this article to post your Wildcard thoughts or Rate My Wildcard Teams (RMWT). Our first article featured my deliberations over a mid-price striker. Next up is Spencer to present his team.

Spencer’s RMWT

Pantilimon – Foster
Lescott – Bertrand – Hutton  – Van Aanholt  – Wisdom
Hazard  – Boyd –  Sigurdsson  – Chadli  – Sánchez
Agüero  – Costa –  Giroud

Goalkeepers

Spencer says: “Since taking the number one jersey at Sunderland in Gameweek 10, Costel Pantilimon has averaged five points a game and has two double-digit scores under his belt. For a 4.5-priced goalkeeper, that is a set of statistics that demands attention. He rotates well with Ben Foster, if you ignore home and away rotation and look at the potential ease of fixtures instead. The West Brom goalkeeper should also benefit from Tony Pulis’s appointment as manager. The former Palace and Stoke boss is renowned for keeping a high number of clean sheets. Which goalkeeper combination do you prefer?

Defence

Spencer says: “I’ve opted for a cheap-as-chips budget defence to ensure I can afford a high number of heavy hitters in midfield and attack. The Pulis effect has affected my thinking here, too, with West Brom’s Joleon Lescott and Andre Wisdom effectively joining Foster in a risky triple defence from the Baggies. The ‘eggs in one basket’ approach continues with the excellently priced Patrick van Aanholt joining Sunderland team-mate Pantilimon in my side. Is this approach foolish or genius?

Midfield

Spencer says: “The benefits of a cheap defence become apparent in my midfield. Eden Hazard is now essential with his strong home statistics, which are beginning to translate into away form as well. Arsenal’s fixtures post-Gameweek 23 look too good to ignore and Alexis Sanchez has proved he is still essential to their play, even if he looked tired over Christmas. With a 3-4-3 formation my preference is  the well-priced George Boyd as a fifth midfielder. Should I be considering 3-5-2 instead?”

Forwards

Spencer says: “Arsenal’s Olivier Giroud is my cheapest attacker. The mid-priced forward is still Arsenal’s best player listed as a forward in the game and certainly doesn’t lack self-confidence. Sergio Aguero’s return is imminent. He is a must-have in my opinion, but his recovery may not come soon enough for this week’s Wildcarders. The final slot goes to Chelsea’s Diego Costa. Granted, he struggles to gain assists and bonus points, but he is the main forward for the Premier League’s best side, a label that still gives him considerable credibility. Am I right in putting my faith in the Chelsea man?”

My preference is for Fabregas over Costa. I just think you'll get more points for less money. But its hard to argue with your attack - its very strong and apart from Aguero and Giroud very few strikers outside of the budget bracket stand out.

I think the WBA triple up could be immense.

triple WBA is massively risky, we don't what defence Pulis will field yet. As Jonty says, Fabs over Costa provides more value for money imo and frees up some cash elsewhere. Take Kane, Ings/Vokes or Austin as 3rd mid

    Agüero – Costa – Giroud

I really dont see any justification for such an expensive front line. It clearly hurts the midfield a little.

Giroud doesnt care about Sanchez' points. I dont believe in covering. Players score points individually. If you back Arsenal to do good, why not.

There is nothing like an expensive frontline on fire, blows away every weakness elsewhere.
Question is if they are up to it 🙂

My back 5 includes Wisdom and Lescott too. It'll be rare I actually start Wisdom but I agree with the choice and won't mind doubling up when necessary. Good luck!

3 WBA is overkill, might be worth doing Lescott > P.Jones

united & burnley have some sweet fixtures for now.

I'm struggling to justify any united at the moment. Rooney does the business at home against weak sides, but away he is too deep. RVP is too expensive, Falcao is similar to Costa as in he gets around 6pts, but that is not what his price should be buying. ADM is probably the only one I'd consider, but there are currently lots of better midfield options.

When I look at stats and fixtures, I am also struggling to pick ADM before Silva and Fabs ( I regard haz and alexis as must haves)

Only thing is if Rooneys role change with ADM, Fellaini and Blind availible again.

It is an interesting approach with 3 WBA at the back. Many of us got this idea that its best spreading and covering different teams to spread the risk, but if you really think WBA will be the best value for money defensive team, surely you will be benefit in the long run with doubling or even tripling up, instead of lining up rotations with weaker similar priced assets.
But then again, you will have the heartbeat pace of a hummingbird in the last minutes of WBA matches when are protecting their 1-0 lead, so don’t know if it is worth it healthwise 

Indeed in every case in this game Risk is equivalent to the Reward.

Is it spreading the risk, or spreading the opportunities? Different word, same meaning.

    Much prefer mine:-

    Pantilimon – Foster
Terry – Bertrand – Debuchy – Van Aanholt – Wasilewski
    Hazard – Fabregas - ADM – Chadli – Sánchez
    Agüero – Kane – Ings

    - Keepers the same, agree this is the best paring.
    - Don't agree on this whole rotation of defense, gone for heavy hitters! Attack and defense points.
    - Killer Midfield (Fab instead of Costa)
    - Aguero and Kane are must haves, have Ings as bencher rather than Boyd.

"Is this approach foolish or genius?"

Former. Sorry - way too risky. Spread the wealth with excellent defenders. Never been a fan of the 'shut-out' theory.

That said (fence sitting again) I think a Clyne/Bertie/Forster triumvirate could be a real option... with a upward turn in fixtures and sky high confidence.

A good team, though I am not sure about the double on Arsenal attack, can you do Giroud to Kane and Chadli to ADM?

Thoughts on my potential WC team...?

    Courtois / Hamer

    Clyne / PvA / Trippier / Hutton / Wisdom

    Haz / Sanchez / AdM / Siggy / Boyd

    Kun / Costa / Kane

    Bolasie out, Bartley doesn't play
Baines a slight injury but even if he does play will be his usual rubbish

      Use this formula:

Need 3 transfers for a -4 or -8 = Do not use WC.

Need 4 transfers = Err on the side of saving that WC.

Need 5 transfers or more = Definitely use the WC. You are not frivolous with your points hit so go ahead, trust your instincts now and set your team up the way you want. Then a -4 or two in the next 6 weeks will keep your team on track.

For me on the other hand I don't have many issues right now so I'm saving it.

Best of luck to you PM.

Your team does look strong though without a lot of real injuries: You would be taking cash from GK and DEF and moving it around. You're OK to wait in my follow-up opinion. I hope I've been helpful to you.

Hi everyone, can you please RMWCT:
    Foster, Myhill
Bertrand, P. Jones, Hutton, PvA, Wasilewski
    Hazard, Sanchez, ADM, Chadli, Boyd
    Costa, Kane, Aguero

I will play 3-5-2 until Kun comes back, Boyd has great next 2-3 fixtures.

I am saving in defense (e.g. Jones instead of Terry) to afford more big hitters upfront. This way and with .5 still in the bank I have more options: can swap ADM with Fabregas, upgrade Chadli to Siggy. Otherwise I'd have to settle for a 8.5 midfielder, in which range options aren't great (Cazorla or Eriksen - I think Chadli is more explosive than him).

Defense-wise, I got Bertrand for cheap and intend to play him and Jones quite often, and rotate the others. Wasilewski is very cheap and covers a couple of tricky fixtures the others have.

This team is for GWs 21-29/30, I will play my other WC afterwards.

Can't argue with any of your picks, only the combination. I understand your vision with the cheap back-line, but I'd personally do the following:

Pick one of Panti/Mannone OR Foster/Myhill. Rotating won't make it easier in my opinion and you can save a bit of cash.

Upgrade one of your WBA defenders to Terry, who will arguably be more valuable than some of your attackers.

If you are still short on cash, pick which one of Costa/Giroud is more important to you and downgrade them for a budget striker. There are too many available to ignore them and it will allow you flexibility to get have a premium defender to play every week and upgrade Siggy if it turns out Bony leaving hurts him.

    Compromise:

    Myhill – Foster OR Panti/Mannone
Terry – Lescott – Bertrand – Hutton – Van Aanholt OR Wisdom
    Hazard – Boyd - Sigurdsson – Chadli – Sánchez
    Agüero – Costa OR Giroud – Kane/Austin/Carroll

At the moment yes, but he is playing a lot of games now, young and cheap, and with a couple of blanks in the next 3 it will certainly be tempting leaving him out of the gw24 wc with two on paper tough games coming up

Thoughts on this please for WC team and GW 21 lineup:

      Wisdom - Hutton - Clark - [Bench - Clyne - Bertrand]

      ADM - Silva - Sanchez - Hazard - Siggy

      Costa - Kane - [Bench - Ayoze].

Then I do Sanchez+Ayoze => Aguero+Boyd in GW 22 for -4 or wait til GW 23/24 for no points loss.

I'd go the option with Costa but would change a few things..

      Clichy --> Lescott

      Bruce --> Hutton

      Would that work?

        Foster / Hamer

        Clichy / Azpilicueta / Bertrand / Duff / Bruce

Hazard / Sanchez / Di Maria / Chadli / Boyd

        Aguero / Kane / Costa

will pick Pantilimon in place of Foster after 2 GW & will be playing it in 3-4-3

Your defence isn't problematic. I've spent the first half with Clyne-Naylor-Pva/Hutton-Chester/Chambers-Duff and it's worked out really well. (When I put slashes, it means I started with the one on the left but around the middle of the first half switched to the one on the right). I got Clyne, Chambers, Naylor, Duff etc before their rises.

Chambers, Duff and Clyne got me value (0.8) and I eventually upgraded that Clyne spot to Terry. 😉

It's more the doubling/tripling up that's the issue I think, rather than the cheapness. Despite Pulis' defensive record, I'm not sure if I've got the bottle to go with 3 x West Brom defence!

Anyone care to rate my provisional WCT? Due for the last week.

    Panti, Krul
    Terry, PVA, Alderweireld, Wisdom, Hutton
    Hazard, Alexis, Downing, ADM, Boyd
    Aguero, Kane, Costa

    0.0 ITB

Have been vocal on the case against Costa, but right now I think he is the only truly good second striker option. If I don't get him I wouldn't know who to get, maybe stick with Austin or Giroud. Also can't afford Bertrand so Alderweireld it is unfortunately.

And would much rather Siggy over Downing or even instead of Boyd. All would probably be possible if I downgraded Costa.

      Looks pretty good to me.

I think you're right. If you're sure you want Costa, then stick with what you have. I'd opt for Giroud if you wanted to free up some cash, even though you have Sanchez already.

I haven't had Costa since GW 10 approx and reaped the rewards. I just think he's gonna start burning non owners with big scores. Although I could improve my team quite a bit by going for Giroud over him. That's the decision really. Much rather Sig over Downing

          I think I'm shifting too towards a Costa-less strikeforce.

              KOK is the way forward.

              Kun - Oli - Kane

I wish I could bring myself to do it this time. But I can't see any of the alternatives coming close to him from now on. I could vastly improve the rest of the team by not getting him though.

I like it mate. Not too gone on DOwning given the fixtures though. Im going something similar possibly losing Costa for Giroud to upgrade that forth mid to a big hitter. In my case Fab. NOt sure if you'll have the cash. I may be going Azpi over Terry to fund this though. Will have to think about it.

Yeah, but can't really afford anyone else if I get Costa 🙁 I just have a feeling about Costa now. I ditched him and shot up the rankings but now I think it's time to get him back given lack of options. Giroud being the only alternative, albeit probably a decent one. Else it's Austin or Gomis but I can't see them getting close to Costa in this second half of the season

Yeah it looks tough alright. Waiting a week or two to see what Costa does. Couple more yellows and he'll have to be out the door. Close to a second ban already

yeah I suppose I can take these few weeks to monitor Costa and see how he does with the view to going without him on WC. Good point actually.

Pick 1 for WC starting this GW:-

    A) Lescott Eriksen Giroud / Austin
    B) Wisdom Chadli Rooney

    Front 6:
    Sanchez Hazard Adm Boyd
    Costa Kane

      A. Tight between Austin and Giroud. Giroud more of a differential. I'm also a fan of his, both fantasy wise and playing wise

Somehow fancy eriksen if I have the money even though stats favour chadli.
Dont fancy Rooney if he's upfront?

Not really, but that's just personal preference.

Out of the two, I prefer A with Giroud.
