Frisking the Fixtures – Gameweek 23 – The Strong

We turn our attentions to the upcoming schedule this afternoon and cast an eye over those teams set for a kind run of fixtures. Arsenal have the platform to push on from their display at the Etihad, whilst Man United and the Sunderland are amongst those with high expectations over the next four to six Gameweeks.

Arsenal

“frisking

Arsene Wenger’s tactical masterclass at the Etihad last weekend couldn’t have been better timed for Fantasy managers, with the Gunners now embarking on a set of fixtures that should cement their assets’ places in a number of our squads. Aside from a north London derby with Spurs, Arsenal boast a superb next six, including the visits of Aston Villa, Leicester and Everton to the Emirates and promising away clashes with Crystal Palace and QPR. Now just one point short of the Champions League spots, the Gunners couldn’t be provided with greater motivation to make the most of this kind run, and judging by their display last Sunday, the next six Gameweeks could be hugely prosperous for their options at both ends of the pitch.

Back-to-back shut-outs in the last two Gameweeks have seen Fantasy managers rediscover interest in the Gunners’ rearguard, with Per Mertesaker and Laurent Koscielny the obvious options at the back. However, the 4.4-rated Hector Bellerin is undoubtedly the one to watch; with Mathieu Debuchy facing another lengthy spell on the sidelines, many had expected Calum Chambers to be the man to profit, but Wenger’s decision to select Bellerin at right-back against City could now offer us an even cheaper option. So long as he can cement his starting role, the young Spaniard will be hard to ignore.

In midfield, one man still dominates the Fantasy landscape. With 12 goals and seven assists thus far, Alexis Sanchez has warranted the hype he received at the start of the campaign, and with a penchant for picking up big returns against the weaker sides in the league (five of his six double-figure hauls have come against teams currently in the bottom half of the table), the Chilean could prove invaluable across the coming weeks. Nonetheless, the Gunners haven’t been solely reliant on the former Barcelona man this term; Santi Cazorla’s goal and assist return at the Etihad was perfectly timed with a blank from Sanchez, and the 8.2-priced playmaker leads the way for transfers-in this week between the two (30,500 to 28,500). With a 4.1% ownership, Cazorla is a ready-made differential for those willing to overlook Sanchez, though could also offer a midfielder double-up if he can maintain his current form. Up top, Olivier Giroud’s strike at the weekend took his tally to four in his last five league outings and he looks guaranteed starts as the lone frontman across that enticing schedule.

Sunderland

“frisking

It’s been a rough ride for the Black Cats of late, with Gus Poyet’s side having now lost four of their last five league fixtures. With three of those defeats coming against Man City, Liverpool and Spurs, however, it would be unfair to condemn the Wearsiders too harshly. Indeed, it is their upcoming schedule that will likely prove the difference come the end of the season, with crucial home encounters against Burnley, QPR and West Brom in their next four, and a Gameweek 28 trip to Hull also on the horizon.

Five clean sheets in eight matches between Gameweeks 12-19 demonstrated the Black Cats’ capabilities at the back, and with 4.2-priced Patrick van Aanholt back in the frame after recently recovering from injury, Fantasy managers are likely to be monitoring Poyet’s rearguard in the hope that they can rediscover that resilience again. Both Van Aanholt and Billy Jones were fielded as wing-backs in a 3-5-2 last time out and their out-of-position appeal could persuade some to even look beyond Costel Pantilimon as an option at the back here.

Adam Johnson’s mini-renaissance has been quenched over the past couple of matches, but the former City man is still undeniably the star attraction in the Black Cats’ attack; three goals and an assist saw the winger average 6.6 points per appearance between Gameweeks 16-20, and his side will be reliant on him flaunting that sort of form in their upcoming relegation scraps. Seb Larsson, at 5.4 and with a goal and assist in his last three, is a cut-price alternative to Johnson in the middle of the park, whilst new boy Jermain Defoe will be looking to cement his status as a differential forward option after beginning his spell on Wearside with an assist against Spurs last weekend.

Man United

“frisking

A 2-0 triumph at QPR last Saturday helped Louis van Gaal’s men return to winning ways after their dire home loss to Southampton in the previous Gameweek. Fortunately, the fixture list remains in their favour, with home meetings against Leicester, Burnley and Sunderland allied with trips to Swansea and Newcastle in the next six. The schedule takes a resounding turn for the worse from then on in, and the Reds will be looking to notch every point they can before their tough end-of-season run-in.

David de Gea’s superhuman performances mean that he continues to dominate the headlines and the Fantasy landscape, with 22.4% of managers utilising the Spaniard’s services between the sticks. Those still holding onto their winter Wildcards will surely be tempted by the 5.8-priced man considering the fixtures, though Phil Jones is a more budget friendly option at 5.3, and looks a mainstay in Van Gaal’s backline when fit.

Further forward, it was the turn of some of United’s differential options to produce against the Hoops, with Antonio Valencia, Marouane Fellaini and young James Wilson all delivering returns. Nonetheless, it is still the Reds’ premium attacking assets who are likely to garner the most attention, with Angel Di Maria (9.5) – who has started the last two in a forward role – still looking to vindicate his record-breaking price tag and Radamel Falcao (10.5) and Wayne Rooney (10.7) compete for our affections in the striker positions.

Stoke

“frisking

Mark Hughes’ outfit got their kind schedule off to a great start with a 1-0 win over basement-dwellers Leicester at the weekend, and with travel-sick QPR visiting the Britannia in two Saturdays’ time, their momentum could pick up pace. With Newcastle, Aston Villa, Hull and struggling Everton also in their next six, the Potters’ assets could more than justify a place in our late winter Wildcards.

So long as he can recover from a groin concern, Ryan Shawcross’s security of starts make him a safe bet in defence at 5.4, though after being called up in place of Geoff Cameron against the Foxes, Phil Bardsley has crept onto our radars, with his attacking endeavours perhaps set to give the former Sunderland right-back the edge over his rearguard team-mates. New boy Philipp Wollscheid, at 4.5, also looks nailed on at centre-half and is far kinder on the budget that Shawcross.

Further forward, the 5.2-valued Victor Moses made his first appearance since Gameweek 12 at the weekend after recovering from injury and now comes back into contention alongside the equally priced Jon Walters for our midfields. Bojan’s winner against Leicester was his third strike in his last seven starts, and with Mame Biram Diouf away at the Africa Cup of Nations, the Spaniard has the chance to further prove why Barcelona showed so much faith in his abilities over the coming weeks.

Also Consider…

Southampton
After a fairly miserable lead-up to Christmas, the Saints are back in business and have now walked away from five of their last six league encounters with victories. Three of those wins have also delivered clean sheets for the Fantasy Premier League game’s two most popular defensive assets, Ryan Bertrand and Nathaniel Clyne, and the pair’s band of owners will be optimistic that they can continue to produce over the upcoming schedule, despite having the likes of Victor Wanyama and Morgan Schneiderlin sidelined in the centre of the park. A tough couple of home dates against West Ham and Liverpool in Gameweeks 25 and 26 are sandwiched between four enticing fixtures; Swansea and QPR are up next for the Saints, with West Brom and Crystal Palace waiting further down the line. New signing Eljero Elia will be keen to continue to impress after his debut brace at the weekend, whilst James Ward-Prowse will be also be blinking on our radars after the 4.8-valued youngster grabbed his fifth assist in his last six starts on Saturday.

Chelsea
Jose Mourinho’s men have rectified their calamitous 5-3 defeat to Spurs on New Year’s Day with two assured wins in the last couple of Gameweeks ahead of their potentially decisive clash with Man City in two weekends’ time. Beyond that mammoth fixture, the Blues are afforded the luxury of a fine next four, with trips to Aston Villa and Leicester and Stamford Bridge meetings with Everton and Burnley on the agenda. At the back, Branislav Ivanovic continues to justify his heavyweight 7.2 price tag, having collected two clean sheets, three assists and three bonus points in the last trio of Gameweeks, and that dominant form looks set to continue over the next five. John Terry offers an alternative or even a double-up option alongside the Serbian for those looking to invest in Mourinho’s backline. Going forward, Eden Hazard, Cesc Fabregas and Oscar are still fighting their corners for our investment in midfield, whilst Diego Costa has rediscovered his early-season form and has now produced six goals and an assist in his previous seven in a run of displays that has cemented his spot in many managers’ sides even in spite of the recent return of Sergio Aguero.

Hull
A tally of only four wins in the league this season has ensured that Steve Bruce’s side have remained firmly out of the Fantasy limelight, though with four promising home fixtures in their next six (NEW, AVL, QPR, SUN), managers are now likely to be monitoring their budget assets. The Tigers have earned clean sheets in three of those four victories, though with injuries currently marring their backline, their hopes of gaining vital points might rely on their offensive efforts. Sone Aluko was utilised as a striker last time out, and with regular forwards Nikica Jelavic and Abel Hernandez set to be sidelined for another month, the 4.6-rated midfielder could flourish as an out-of-position prospect. Ahmed Elmohamady is another to consider in midfield, having played every minute of league football this season and accrued a goal and assist in the last five from his right-wing berth.

West Brom
‘The Tony Pulis Effect’ – you can’t argue with it. Two league matches in charge have earned back-to-back clean sheets and put four precious points on the board for the Baggies, who now face crucial meetings with Burnley, Sunderland and Aston Villa in the next six as they look to continue their great relegation escape. Andre Wisdom is now up to 4.5 from a starting price of 4.0, but will more than justify that rise if the Midlanders continue to show the same resilience in the upcoming weeks. Further forward, the Baggies’ efforts undoubtedly still need a kickstart, with Saido Berahino the man most likely to produce it; the youngster has notched twice in his last three after a major dip in form towards the end of 2014, though a move to the left flank away to Everton is a worry and may dissuade some from investing as Pulis looks to tighten up on his travels.

    Fabregas owners are you keeping?

I'm thinking it might be time to now ship him and use funds elsewhere or up get Costa in after city?

    Anyone else thinking the same?

I've had him since GW1 and until he demonstrates a slow down in form I don't feel the need to get rid. He's a highly consistent source of points.

Although the Costa rampage of last GW is still fresh in our minds, it's worth noting that from GW 11 to GW 21, John Terry actually out scored costa every single week. Food for thought?

10 weeks of data is rendered obsolete by a potentially anomalous 1? I'd have to disagree.

I know what you're trying to say here, but it's apple to oranges right now comparing a defenders old form to a forwards recent form. I'm aware JT outscored Costa when the latter was in a dire run of form, but that's neither here or there. I find it irrelevant if Costa scored 2 goals in 2 games, and Terry racks in 2 cleanies in 2 games, they must be judged on their own merit. Not in tandem.

They both provide different value for your team

          GW 21 is not obsolete.

GW 22 can just be an outlier.

            Look above mate

Gw22 can be an outlier? Not sure about this one, if anything this was to be expected. Costa can always score an extra goal out of the woodwork. 6 goals and 2 assists in 7 games for Costa, that's a great run of form for anyone. Saying that his brace is an anomaly in any realm is blasphemy.

Playing around with WC drafts at 3:30 am b/c you're jet-lagged:

    Panti - Krul
    Terry - Fonte - Jones - Bellerin - Wisdom
    Hazard - Fabregas - Sanchez - Cazorla - Boyd
    Aguero - Kane - Austin

    0.1 itb

    What do you reckon?

Rotating keepers. CHE, SOT, UTD and ARS (punt on bellerin, easily made PVA or Baird if unsuccessful) cover in defence will create benching dilemmas, but will certainly provide strong CS potential every week. Core 3 mids of Haz, Alexis and Fab, with Cazorla for a punt. Template (bar Costa) up front.

Hmm cheers. I hadn't actually been planning to have two playing keepers (panti only) but I was drawn in by having .5 left over on my draft.

Alternate options in terms of using the money include:

        Wisdom + Boyd -> Baird + Puncheon

Creating even more benching dilemmas, but giving me a strong 5th mid.

        Thoughts?

Is Larsson as 4th mid ok or a bit weak? He has fix and may get some points.

    Hi Everyone,

For those of you on your WC or are planning to next week, take a look at the below.

I have compiled a list of cheap defensive rotations which rotate near perfectly until the end of the season. Not sure if this should be an article due to the length but anyway.

    1) SWANSEA-SUNDERLAND

eg. Naughton (4.3m)+PvA(4.2m) - NB. Assuming the Naughton transfer goes through and he's nailed.

    BUR/SUN/QPR/WBA/bur/hul/AVL/avl/HUL/CPL/lei/new/STO/eve/LEI/cpl

    2) SWANSEA-STOKE

    eg.Naughton (4.3m)+Wollshield(4.5m)

    QPR/SUN/wba/avl/HUL/EVE/wba/CPL/HUL/EVE/lei/SUN/STO/TOT/bur/cpl

    3) SWANSEA-WEST BROM

    eg.Naughton (4.3m)+Wisdom(4.5m)/Baird(3.9m)

    TOT/SUN/wba/sun/bur/avl/STO/avl/HUL/LEI/lei/new/STO/new/MCI/cpl

    4) STOKE-WEST BROM

    eg. Wollshield(4.5m)+Wisdom(4.5m)/Baird(3.9m)

    QPR/bur/SWA/avl/HUL/avl/STO/CPL/QPR/LEI/cpl/SUN/swa/new/bur/LIV

    5) SUNDERLAND-ASTON VILLA

    eg. PvA (4.2m) + Hutton (4.4m)

    BUR/swa/QPR/WBA/new/WBA/AVL/SWA/NEW/CPL/QPR/sto/EVE/WHM/LEI/BUR

    6) NEWCASTLE - WEST BROM

    eg. Dummett (4.3m)+Wisdom(4.5m)/Baird(3.9m)

    hul/bur/cpl/sun/AVL/avl/STO/ARS/QPR/LEI/cpl/SWA/lei/WBA/qpr/WHM

    7) LEICESTER - HULL

    eg. Wosilezski (4.0m)+Chester(4.4m)

    NEW/CPL/AVL/QPR/sto/SUN/HUL/tot/swa/wba/SWA/bur/NEW/BUR/sun/QPR

Hope this is useful for anyone considering rotations. Let me know if anyone has found others! 🙂

Understandable. Going Foster-Krul myself. PVA's attacking threat the reason and don't want to double up with Panti. Doubling up on WBA instead, but Baird is 3.9 so not too worried.

          You'll have to play bad fixtures in GW's 35, 36 and 38 with that. ON'y GW 36 is a problem for Sto-Swa-Wba.

Think Im going with the WBR /STOKE one. with Chelsea/Clyne/ Bellerin . But investing a little more in defence in the run in.
Just do not see a Leicester defender as an option - they going to open up again and concede regularly

With the amount of cheap defenders who are nailed and in reasonable defences, I'm probably going for a 2 from 4 rotation. More optimal and less wasteful than a 1 from 3 or 1 from 2.

@Debauchy sorry. Stepped out for a minute
I got talked out of it tbh. Wanted to go 352 without Costa, glad I didn't in the end. 🙂
There's a long way to go! 2 bad weeks and I could be out of the top 100 (just a 27/28 pt gap) so wouldn't go too crazy just yet. Basically going to come down to your captaincy picks and 3rd/4th mid. The problem with a punt is that it may get you 1/2 big weeks but won't keep you rolling over unless you time your changes perfectly imo - which could get harder with the C1C / FAC replays / UCL rotation forcing your hand.
Still did my little bit in going 4 premium in midfield and Chelsea less at the back but I have my regular WC in the bag to mix things up later if required, hoping it makes the difference when the DGW comes around.

Like your thought process, but I feel this is ahead of it's time Mupps. Feel there's more room for error going sansa Aguero rather than sans Costa.

I'll be going w/o Costa fwiw, since I feel safer "covering" Costa's points with Hazard/Fab/Oscar, then I do with Aguero. Since I would not feel comfortable going with Silva long term to safeguard me from the perils of a City 5-0 to a QPR or Leicester. YYT might be decent, but he will not have pens and represent horrible value with Aguero on the pitch. Bony is the only real "cover" I'd consider, but no one know how he'll be integrated to the team, so it's a longshot for now.

        • 10 Years

I'll have Bony soon enough, most likely for Falcao or Giroud. He'll do a much better job of covering Aguero than Fab will Costa. 😉

On what basis are you saying this? Bellerin and Chambers have hardly been fit at the same time.

Say you had Bellerin and he is in your 1st X1 but Chambers starts the game. You'd be annoyed, right? Let's say Arsenal are protecting a lead and they want to shore things up near the end of the game, so they move Chambers to DF (he has played there before) and bring Bellerin on.

Can't see Chambers starting above him at the moment, he's been playing well and it's his place to lose with Debuchy out imo.. Can see Wenger giving Chambers a break with the amount of games hes played in the first half of the season and just being kept as cover for the centre backs.

        4. Demí
          • 13 Years

You're just thinking of a hypothetical situation that isn't really there. It doesn't happen with many other teams. Didn't when Debuchy was fit. Think you're clutching at straws a bit to find a negative here. Bellerin is rarely likely to be in Wenger's most likely 3 subs that he brings on, he barely makes subs at all until late in games. Should be 90 or 0 most times, you may get the odd occasion where Bellerin will come on incase of injury in the backline, but hardly worth worrying about at that price i dont think.

    Aguero Kane Ings

My question is who do I bench for the next game week? My standard 3 subs Bellerin, PVA and JWP are home to Villa, Burnley and Swansea? I want to start Bellerin especially becuse I think Arsenal have a great chance of a clean sheet against Villa but who do I drop? Chadli perhaps?

I can't see why you would? He only blanked once and had a great run of goals.. Why get rid?

just curious on the atmosphere..he's been doing well while Spurs in general have been OK..

they have wba, ARS, liv, WHM, qpr, SWA, mun

        not AWESOME fixtures

Not great fixtures but still think he's the best option at his price by some distance, even more so if you got him cheaper.

yeah got him at 5.2..will probably keep just curious what others on WC were thinking since you can start fresh with the fixtures you have in front of you

Those are pretty bad fixtures for me Sinik, all 5 of Arsenal, West Brom, Liverpool, West Ham and United are tight defenses. They will continue to tighten for the remainder of the season as history tends to repeat itself, also the Swans with Ki back and new defensive signings might be a tough game as well.

I can see 2/3 goals max from those fixtures from Harry, albeit the factor that you can't dismiss of form, is still to his name so this might be a bit over-analyzing

agreed, 'not AWESOME' was heavy on the sarcasm..Spurs haven't been anything special when looked at separately from Kane's form

I think that if he had scored last week, when his shot cannoned into the post, we would not be asking this question.

      I'm keeping.

I'm looking forward not backwards..the guy has blanked twice in the last 7 so has been doing QUTIE well

Despite the form he's been in his manager ran him out on the wing. Doesn't bode well.

Yes. It was one game. But that's all I needed to see. His fixtures aren't great anyway.

So you would be taking him out even if he had scored? A bold move.

If you think your alternative can score even more highly, at similar value, then I can understand it. Who did you have in mind?

At that price, ownership and value, I think there's a higher risk involved than opting out of a heavy hitter. Albeit, I'd got him just last week for his blank, and these coming fixtures aren't at all convincing.
I'd definitely keep if I had a good rank (top10k), but am currently on a horrible run of form going from 40k to 100k in 3 GW's.

So for now he represents little to no value in my side with Bojan/Gayle/Defoe all having the potential
to outscore him in these next 8. Keep in mind the Gw27 blank, any of those budget strikers can easily outscore him in these next 8 imo, though he'll likely be back in my team by the end of the season.

GW27 blank? if they win in the cup?

yeah I'm ranked 110k and while I bought him at 5.2m I'm tempted to sell as am on WC (sell for 5.5)

Is it too light to have:

    Foster Myhill
    Naylor Wollscheid PVA Hutton Baird

Would give a really nice front 8, and nice rotation in 3-mans defend untill GW 35.

    Thinking about WC options:

    A) Chadli, Puncheon, Giroud

    B) Di Maria, Boyd/Ward-Prowse, Kane

No.. No thing as too much with strikers/mids if you think they'll score well and all of those can score as well as anyone else in their position.

I have a draft WC team that includes triple attack from both of those teams! It may be slightly OTT but their form and fixtures are great. Only problems I can foresee are those low scoring games where they keep cleansheets.

that's where you gotta have Terry/Arsenal defender (the latter depending on whether I have Giroo or Pelle in attack)

My Mirallas punt on last week's wildcard backfired...

Time to ditch him what are people's thoughts? I have 8.6m to spend.

    Cazorla? Downing?

Though tempted to do Mirallas & Chadli to Di Maria & Puncheon / Elia.

Who would be your 1-week punt before the Jan WC?

I was thinking Austin to Giroud or Silva to Cazorla before the reset.

Tadic could be an interesting punt for GW23 too.
