Monitor – Charlie Austin

In a season where a number of budget forwards have more than held their own with premium-priced alternatives, QPR’s Charlie Austin has arguably been the pick of the bunch. Still kindly priced at 6.5 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, he sits second amongst strikers on 109 points, sandwiched in between big-hitting pair Diego Costa and Sergio Aguero on the back of 13 goals and a trio of assists in just 20 top-flight appearances.

Over the last four Gameweeks, however, Austin’s Fantasy returns have afforded his owners cause for concern. The R’s top scorer has struck just once from Gameweek 19 onwards – compared to five strikes in his previous four appearances – and with plenty of similarly priced options jostling for our attentions, we delve into the data to assess Austin’s recent displays, comparing them to both his previous performances and fellow forwards alike.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

      Kane > Gayle/Bojan/Defoe

not sold on Cazorla and both Bellerin and Baird may not be nailed..

also JWP may be a better 5th mid than Boyd

Aye, and yeah, the way a worm hole was portrayed in the movie was incredible. The imagery was breathtaking from beginning to end.

Just an FYI, most well known scientists approve of the film. Especially since the film was executively produced by Kip Thorne, who's an authority figure in the world of astrophysics, gravitational waves and the warping of space time. Much of the film was influenced by his work.

Trippier? Poor fixtures soon. I like your defence apart from him.

Lack of Hazard might hurt you in midfield and I'm not a fan of Elia, can't see him being a good pick. The rest are good, maybe try squeeze in Boyd as a 5th mid?

Falcao? Don't be misguided by fixtures 😉

        Trippier rotated perfectly with PVA.

Gives me: BUR,WBA,QPR,WBA,SWA,hul,AVL then Burnley goes to crap and I rely completely on PVA. 🙂

Agree, Hazard could come in for Silva somehow, once I get in Aguero. Probably will come with a Giroud downgrade. I just don't fancy having 3 Chelsea for this week, want 2 and then bring in a 3rd later on.

Elia, might just be a flash in the pan, but fixtures + his style of play and how well he suits his role at Southampton is what's urging me to put him in my team. He's cheap as well.

Just a cheeky punt. 😉 Might be a stupid one but I don't think I'll take him out of the team...slightly biased, but fancy United at home to Leicester, and LVG has already said Falcao needs to prove himself so prove himself he shall! He could've had 3 this GW.

A puntastic team Arvin, I like it a lot actually. Though two things for me are clear, for me that's a bit to much investment in the front and at what cost? Well, opting for triple Arsenal at the expense of triple Chelsea is unbecoming, imo.

The direction for your team is great, though like Innsie pointed out, Trippier is a waste of funds right now. That money could be used sparingly in your midfield for say-a cheeky Marney upgrade to JWP and your bench would be improved tenfold. To not disrupt your rotation, any of Swansea, Newcastle or Villa could replace your Burnley slot.

Now for the midfield, I feel Elia is one punt too far for sure. Yes, there are cases of the odd manager smashing down previous statistical history for a given player, but with a player like Elia I think he's proven to be dead weight on every team he's set foot on. These 2 goals and his conversion rate these past two games are an anomaly in what has been a horrible career. He'll be marginalized on the team when Mane's is back and I'm confident he'll produce Bolasie esque return in the sense that's he a great show, but produces minimal points for an FPL side. Fwiw, he's a horrible finisher, perhaps he could be a great option later on when Pelle start finishing chances and both Mane and him are on the XI.

So Elia to Punch/Moses for me here, and they're both great options at the moment. Plus, they're still differential material, so it still sticks to the theme for that spot.

Cazorla and Sanchez is more than enough Arsenal attack, imo. One more is a bit misguided here, I see your intentions, but I feel this move won't pay off the end. Chelsea attack I think warrants the better investment here or even a Stoke/Palace attacker. Albeit, with Cazorla in-form, Sanchez and Giroud all fit and firing, this could be quite the future endeavor with this great run. Not to mention, Wally coming back adds a new dimension to Arsenal's playing style. In any case, I think when Wally's back will be the time to invest heavily for their attack, as I feel it will benefit Giroud the most out of the three.

Great Falcao pick, looked extremely promising vs QPR.. This could be a great time to invest in him, can't realistically see his dire-form last too long. Perhaps this one goal and this great run is all takes for Falcao to start gaining momentum in England.

It all really comes down to a Giroud downgrade for me Arvin. There are budget forwards in abundance and good ones at that, many with low ownership, all ripe for a spot on your side. I'd take a gander and run a comparison tool between any one of Austin, Bojan, Gayle or Defoe and see what you come up with. Form there, I'd rearrange the funds and invest in the midfield or/and a better defensive pick than Trip

Fwiw, go with your gut on this, you know what you're doing so your judgement and your line-of-sight to the top is what matters most.

Got challenged by a friend to produce a rank-ordered Top 15 list of R.E.M. songs. On third time through the catalog, culling each time and finally down to 31 songs. Getting realllly hard to chop them out at this point.

Had to cut Everybody Hurts from my list, but that's cuz I'm obsessing on the entire catalog.

So nothing off Murmur - arguably their best album? Radio Free Europe and Talk About the Passion should be top 10. Good focus on the excellent Reckoning though.

Murmur faves got chopped in last cut. I like Reckoning better, but New Adventures in Hi Fi is also amazing and still heavily represented

Choosing fifteen songs means choosing about 6-7% of their total output over 16 or so albums.

Probably so. Definitely so, I'll admit. Those are definitely greatest hits. But I neglected to put up top that it was also to be our favorite fifteen and that we were encouraged to not just go with the fifteen that would be on any Greatest Hits collection. We were looking to expand on that.

😛 I understand eh, great selection in any case and I'm sure they're great songs DB 😮

Here in the U.S, we're not TOO big on R.E.M, so will definitely look some albums up and expand my horizon a little

I am here in the U.S. Just as they are/were. I'm in Arizona. If you don't have New Adventures in Hi-Fi, you should definitely. Avoid Up, Reveal, and Around the Sun. Final two, Accelerate and Collapse into Now, both have fair number of good stuff also.

Dropping out Radio Free Europe, South Central Rain, Everybody Hurts, Losing My Religion, any number of others would be criminal if trying to market this as a Greatest Hits album.

    Sun/ Wba/ Stoke: Gw24 - 38
(bur, QPR, WBA, HUL, hul, AVL, CPL, QPR, LEI, cpl, SUN, swa, new, LEI , LIV)

With PVA playing wing back at the moment, Stoke promising on both ends for these upcoming fixtures with 3 clean sheets in their last 5, and West Brom showing great discipline under TP, these will be my go-to defense in the back. Swansea and Naughton might warrant some investment for me when Ki is back and they show some signs of solidity at the back, but for now I'm staying away

Who are you guys fancying for cheap defensive cover? If you rotate, do you tend to prefer the H/a rotation, or is the fixture difficulty more of your ilk?

Great pick Arvin! What a tank Wolly is, looks like he'll be dominant on set pieces.

Aye, on paper Bur/Avl/Wba have arguably the perfect H/a rotation, but the fixtures are skewed because it's a weak Burnley defense you're relying on and Villa are inferior to both Sunderland and Stoke imo

Interesting call that, a lot down to how you perceive both teams will end on the table by the end of the season. Also, Berty and a Saints defender is standard, you can't go wrong there. Though Jones is interesting in the sense that United are looking cleaner in the back this half. (6 goals in their last 10 league matches).

Plus, he's technically and statistically been of United's best players this season fwiw. In any case he's a strong pick and is playing for a team who will hold more wight in the standings than the Saints by the end of the season imo, Sooner or later the emperor will have a disciplined formation and team by season's end, my head says United will finish the season with a bang and the Saints will shrink later om

      1. WalcOXladechamberGibbs
        • 9 Years
        9 years, 3 months ago

I agree it depends on the perception, nice analysis. Southampton have been picked to fall off form and drop down all season and yet they're still going. Utd are an unknown and Jones has lots of potential, but I just don't like United's unpredictability.

        1. Zasa
          • 9 Years
          9 years, 3 months ago

Good point on the Saints's miracle run earlier, this could be a great underdog story in any case down the season. Still, I can't see their team keeping composure for too long. What they have in defensive solidity, they lack in offensive displays. With Pelle unable to finish chances and Tadic lacking a decent finish in the box, I just can't see how they can finish in the top 4 with a lack of attacking prowess.

Elia is here, but he's an even worse finisher than Tadic, Jay is still out and Mane will hopefully be back sooner rather than later. Fwiw, a part of me wants the Saints ts to smash the top 5 template and play in Europe, but my head says that big boys like always will re-discipline themselves when it counts this latter half and perform in the big games.

For the record, Jone has already proven his worth this season (in real life) with or without clean sheets, he's been as steady as rock and him DDG have been key in their recent solidity in the back coupled with Carrick.

        • 10 Years

sou didn't look that sound defensively against Newcastle.....might be losing their edge......leaning towards jones at the moment. And I agree with your prediction that utd will have a much better run in the second half of the season than saints.

Really hope Sturridge and Walcott are fit to play this gameweek. Activating my WC next gameweek and without these 2 my team looks kinda staid and the same as everyone elses. Seriously eyeing up a big 3 up front. Aguero Costa Sturridge. Any other previously reliable differentials coming back onto the scene?

Yeah I'm not too fussed, but he has great fixtures for the weeks that Clyne, Bellerin and PVA don't so the rotation works kinda well. He seems to have the LB role to lose also these days. I could perhaps downgrade to a NEW defender and then upgrade Boyd back to Downing?
