Scout Report – Callum McManaman

Tony Pulis made his first foray into the transfer market as manager of West Brom by acquiring Callum McManaman from Wigan. Arriving at the Hawthorns on a three-and-a-half year contract, the 23-year-old winger admitted the lure of the English top flight was too good to turn down:

“I’m really made up to have joined. When the chance came to move to West Bromwich Albion, and return to the Premier League, I couldn’t turn it down. This is a great move for me and I hope the Albion fans will get to see the best of me. Albion are a great club, with a good tradition. I can’t wait to get going.”

His new manager was also delighted with the deal. After chasing the wide man’s signature for a number of days, Pulis took to the West Brom website to talk up his prospects:

“I’m delighted we’ve got Callum and I believe he will be an exciting addition to our numbers. Callum is a player who can improve our options and I am really looking forward to working with him.”

The History

The Merseyside-born McManaman started his youth career at Everton but after eight years at the Goodison club, was released back in 2006 and signed for the Latics following year.

After a couple of seasons in the reserves under Roberto Martinez, McManaman became Wigan’s youngest ever player to feature in the top flight after earning his league debut in May 2009. The then-Latics boss was somewhat cautious with the winger’s pitch time, though, and McManaman played just 11 times across all competitions over the following three seasons, supplying two goals and a pair of assists for the DW club. A three-month loan deal at Blackpool in 2011/12 produced two goals in 14 appearances before he returned to his parent club in time for the following campaign.

It’s fair to say that McManaman has struggled for consistency in the final third, though. The highlight of his time at Wigan was a man-of-the-match display in the 2013 FA Cup Final, where he helped clinch a shock win over Manchester City, but aside from that, his displays have been erratic. Over a total of 109 appearances across all competitions, he mustered 17 goals and eight assists, with five strikes in 23 Championship matches this season proving his most prolific. The Baggies new boy has made four appearances for the England Under-20 side but is yet to manage the step up to senior level.

The Prospects

Having started with the predominantly left-footed Chris Brunt on the Baggies right in both of his league matches in charge, Pulis is now clearly determined to add more width to his side’s play to stretch opposition backlines. McManaman’s pace and trickery on the ball certainly adds a new dimension to the Midlands side and it seems likely he’ll be handed the position on the right, though he’s versatile enough to be fielded as an inverted winger out left.

As we’ve witnessed already, Pulis isn’t afraid to alter his tactics in accordance with opponent. At home to Hull on his debut at the helm, he rolled out a 4-4-2 with Saido Berahino alongside Brown Ideye up top, but despite netting his side’s winner, the former was moved to the left flank away to Everton the following Gameweek as Pulis moved to 4-5-1. With more options out wide, though, it remains to be seen whether the Baggies boss will continue to utilise Berahino on the flank for road trips, though the youngster’s lack of physical presence suggests he’s not as well equipped to lead the line as a lone striker compared to the more robust Ideye or Victor Anichebe.

Certainly, Pulis’ record so far – one goal and two clean sheets in two matches – suggests that, as we’d anticipated, West Brom’s defence may be the safest option for those looking to invest in the Hawthorns side. Given that Chris Baird dropped out of the starting XI for the weekend cup win at Birmingham, Andre Wisdom remains the backline option of choice for many and it may well be that with a natural right winger in front of him now, putting defenders on the back foot and creating space behind, he’ll will be afforded greater freedom to forage forward and support more attacks in the opponents’ half.

Likely to come in at no more than 5.5 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, McManaman has showdowns against Burnley, Swansea, Sunderland and Villa in the next six to cement a starting role in the Baggies XI and given that no other West Brom midfielder has scored more than once this season, the new boy certainly has the chance to stake a claim. With the “Pulis effect” already taking effect at the back, though, and the likes of Jason Puncheon, Adam Johnson, Victor Moses and Eljero Elia all vying for our attentions in the budget midfield bracket, McManaman will need to up his game in order to become a genuine contender for our 15-man squads.

Morning DZ, in light of the Costa ban, would you:

    A) Leave alone
    B) Costa -> Falcao/Rooney (4 points) and bench Downing
    C) Wildcard

    Lloris
    Baines, Terry, Chambers
    Sanchez, Hazard, Santi, Eriksen, Downing
    Austin, Kane

    Elliot, Wisdom, Hutton, Costa
    Bank 1.0m, 0FT, 2WC

That's not a bad starting XI at all... although a Costa suspension - I think that's too much value to be leaving on the bench prior to using your winter WC.

If Costa is banned - Costa > Falcao or Giroud?

Thatll do for one game, but make sure you play your WC and sell Costa immediately after the deadline on saturday.

At the moment I've got Coutinho and have been planning to change him for Sterling.

After recent performances (unlucky not to score in last 3 games I've seen) and the due return of Sturridge to the CF berth, do you think Coutinho will actually be a decent alternative? He'll probably be playing in the hole and will have more space with Sterling and Sturridge's movement in front of him?

It's a gamble, that's for sure. But with Kane at 90% ownership in the top 10k, it's a gamble I'm willing to take with him away at WBA. Might be in the hole again and not up front. Plus I only got him last week, so no value tied in..

Evening. If you had a solid but not scintillating lineup for gw23 so didn't need to wild card, would you do it this week anyway to get the new players in if they happen to have a promising set of fixtures this weekend?

Basically, how many points is waiting an extra week for information and late transfers worth? 10? More? With only 16gws left I don't want to have a mediocre gw23 and drop points that I could have picked up with my new crew.

That was pretty much what I was faced with too, and I decided to WC. My defense was in shambles but I could have I guess "gotten by" with my old squad. Felt it was just time to mix it up though and make wholesale changes....so wholesale changes I did! Can't think there is a correct answer to that question though gotta go with what you're feeling.

I hear you. My current squad looks good for gw24 so I could be hesitant to ship people based on what is right in front of me, burning myself for two weeks in a row.

        I hope I don't jinx myself but I think I have a squad I really like.

Do it this week. Nice home fixtures for SOT, Ars, MANU, Sun. And surely you'd be including players from those teams anyway on a WC next week. (and even Stoke too)

You're good for one week though ditch a Chelsea defender for Kosc.

He was deputising at CM while Whelan was injured, then when Whelan returned to fitness, this coincided with Bardsley getting injured, so Cameron slotted in to RB. Now that Whelan is back at CM and Bardsley is back at RB, Cameron goes back to the bench.

    WC update:

    Pantilimon Krul
    Terry Clyne Wollscheid Baird PvA
    Hazard Sanchez Sterling Mane Boyd
    Giroud Aguero Kane

2.9m in bank (Giroud back to Costa cash saved, in case suspension is not upheld)

Too early for Mane - having only just returned from ACON?

Cheers Joga Bonito! I'll have a think about Mane, definitely! Can afford to risk him not playing this GW, with decent fixtures for the majority of the back 4. If Mane a no-show - could go 4-3-3 (play Terry, Clyne, PvA, Wollscheid - for example)

Walsh reminded me on the last page that I owned Phil Bardsley earlier in the season. He only had around 0.2% ownership at the time and I only saw one other person on FFS who owned him as well.

Bardsley rewarded me with a clean sheet and 2 bonus points against Newcastle, but a couple of 1 pointers afterwards meant he only stayed in my team for a month.

So, just like my Bardsley, who's the one player, the one crazy differential, the one incredibly boring or amazingly eye-opening player that has graced your FPL team this season,? And how did they do for you?

Just seen Atleticos Turan throughing his boot at the Linesman, very lucky it didn't catch him on the napper and luckier still that none of the officials saw it. On SSN.

Innsie's last post got me thinking, how many reds have you guys had and how have they affected your season?

I've had 3: Naughton, Rooney & Chambers. Naughton was annoying, Rooney turned out great as I got in Aguero from it and Chambers forced my WC in GW16.

All in all a mixed barrel for me that could have been worse, but I've coped.

Rooney red was disastrous. Wrecked my Aguero differential. Also had Blackett's. No comment on that one.

Ah the interesting flip-side of reds for players not in your team, convergence towards a template! Was it for the best getting in a new defender or not?

I had Rooney who I fancied to keep up with Costa so it was doubly bad. Brought Aldy in for a Saints triple up which didn't really come off. In reality it's been two Reds seeing red that turned my season.

Still holding 11K so you've coped pretty well considering, though it is unfortunate seeing what could have been a 38 point differential evaporate.

Yeah, could be worse. But that GW was infuriating. Not only had many just transferred Kun in but then Sunderland forgot what a football was against Saints.

    So...

I mean I've never seen any retrospective action appeal do any good. Sure appeals for on field decisions get overturned. But never when the FA steps in after the fact.

Yeah agreed. But my point is whether they can delay the inevitable ban to start after the MCY game, i.e. appeal today and then the FA take until after Sat to hear the appeal and make a ruling, meaning Costa would be available for MCY.
