Injuries

The Treatment Table – Gameweek 24

With Gameweek 25 just around the corner, our look at the injuries sustained over the weekend brings a handful of concerns for Roberto Martinez ahead of the trip to Chelsea. Charlie Austin will miss QPR’s crucial encounter at Sunderland, while Ronald Koeman allays fears over the head knock that forced off young Matt Targett early on last weekend.

Burnley
Manager Sean Dyche said it was too early to offer a diagnosis on the knee injury that forced Dean Marney off at half-time in the 2-2 draw against West Brom, according to the club’s official website.

Chelsea
Cesc Fabregas remained sidelined with a hamstring problem for the Blues’ 2-1 win over Villa. Reports on Friday confirmed the Spaniard had been passed fit during Jose Mourinho’s press conference but he failed to make the trip to the midlands, with doubts remaining over his midweek availability at home to Everton.

Crystal Palace
Scott Dann was replaced at half-time following a clash of heads with Leicester’s Wes Morgan in the 1-0 win at the King Power. Alan Pardew doesn’t believe the defender suffered concussion from the incident.

“Scott Dann has a large golf-ball-sized lump on his head from a clash with Morgan. He wasn’t quite right at half time. I don’t think he was concussed, but he felt a little bit uncomfortable.”

Everton
Leighton Baines will be assessed ahead of the game against Chelsea on Wednesday after failing a fitness test on a knee injury before the Merseyside derby. Aiden McGeady looks set to miss out against the Blues with a similar complaint, revealed Roberto Martinez.

“As you can imagine, Leighton did not want to miss the game for anything and we tried everything to get him fit. But the knee wouldn’t settle and we had a fitness test this morning which showed he wasn’t 100 per cent to play. I don’t know about Wednesday [against Chelsea]. I don’t think it is a long-term problem and I think he could be available – if the game was a week away, I would definitely feel that he would be ready..Aiden had a knock in training and has a bruised bone in the knee. I think he will be a little bit longer than Wednesday, even though it is not a serious problem.”

The Toffees boss revealed Muhamed Besic and Steven Naismith will also need assessing after picking up knocks in the 0-0 draw at Goodison Park.

“Steven Naismith had a really nasty fall and he twisted his neck. The doctor was concerned and we were going to do the substitution but the doctor felt he could carry on until half-time and then we could reassess. Naisy didn’t want to come off and then also Mo Besic was carrying a little bit of a niggle, James McCarthy was coming back from a long-term injury, it was the first time Bryan Oviedo had started for a while and Gareth Barry was on nine bookings – so I had to make sure I wasn’t using a substitution cheaply.”

Liverpool
Brendan Rodgers revealed midfielder Lucas Leiva was substituted after 16 minutes of the Merseyside derby with a recurrence of a groin injury which ruled him out of the FA Cup tie at Bolton last Wednesday.

“We’ll just have to assess it. He had a slight problem with his adductor – that’s why he missed the last game [at Bolton]. He felt it again there, so we’ll see what the scan says on that.”

QPR
Charlie Austin will miss Tuesday’s trip to Sunderland after suffering heavy bruising to his right foot. But Rangers’ top goalscorer should be available for their Gameweek 26 clash against Hull at Loftus Road. The news on Richard Dunne isn’t so good, though; the veteran is ruled out for up to three months after sustaining a medial cruciate ligament injury, whilst fellow defender Nedum Onouha faces three-to-four weeks on the sidelines with a hamstring injury.

Southampton
Replacing the suspended Ryan Bertrand in the starting XI, Matt Targett lasted just 25 minutes before suffering a head injury following an aerial collision with QPR’s Matt Phillips. Ronald Koeman is confident the injury isn’t too serious:

“The update with Matt is that everything is under control now. There’s no other problems. He will have a headache but nothing more and that’s good news.

Stoke
Stephen Ireland and Marc Wilson both limped off injured during the 1-1 draw at St James’ Park, reports in the local press have confirmed.

West Brom
Victor Anichebe was forced off with a groin injury in the Baggies 2-2 draw against Burnley. After the match, Tony Pulis explained why Saido Berahino was named amongst the subs and gave an update on Anichebe’s situation.

“We have three big games so were looking after Saido a bit. Victor has been in and done well but he felt his groin before the game but the big fella waned to play and start the game. You could see after 15 minutes that he was struggling. ”

    Morning all!

Are there any other mids that are performing like Arsenal's right now?
The only other options seem to be:

    A) Chelsea (oscar, cesc, cuadrado, etc), who have a blank, so I don't want any more than Hazard,
    B) Eriksen, who also has a blank so I'm good with just Kane for now,
    C) Sterling? 😐 poor fixtures short term.
    D) Cheaper mids like Downing, Mane, Chadli, I have 2 cheap forwards and Boyd so would rather avoid this.
    E) Am I forgetting about anyone obvious?

I did Cesc + Berahino out for Ozil + Defoe last night, but I'm thinking about potentially going one step further and making it a -4.
How would AdM out for Sanchez for -4 sound? Obviously only when lineups are confirmed.
    Would leave me with this:

    Foster
    Clyne - Fonte - Wisdom
    Hazard - Caz - Ozil - Sanchez
    Aguero - Defoe - Kane
    (Panti - Boyd - Hutton - Bertrand)

    FOR ARGUMENT:

Arsenal mids are in good form (excluding Spurs result) and I expect their points to be shared around the team fairly evenly with so many options in there. Their fixtures are decent and I could easily swap out one or two of them for a DGW player or two. Plus having 3 Arsenal mids could be a nice differential this week with Leicester at home.
AdM is just not fantastic fpl material at the moment, I'm not sure if it's due to LVG and tactics or if it's just a reflection on his defensive work, his work rate, and his more creative flair winning out over his "clinical" shooting.

    AGAINST ARGUMENT:

    - AdM has Burnley at home, feels mad hypothetically getting rid of him but I'm expecting nothing from him even with that fixture..
    - I still need further convincing that Sanchez can justify his price tag with all of Arsenal's players fit and playing (especially Giroud).
    - Triple Arsenal might not be the most stable of cores for my team, injuries, rotation, form....

It basically just comes down to this:

Are there any other mids that are performing like Arsenal's right now?
The only other options seem to be:

        A) Chelsea,
        B) Eriksen,
        C) Sterling,
        D) Below £8m mids
        E) Am I forgetting anyone?

Like it mate. I might be going for triple Arsenal soon as Di Maria has been nothing but disappointment (and I already have Sanchez & Ozil installed; with no other Arsenal in my team).

These will be in addition to Hazard & Mane in a 3-5-2 though. I wouldn't say Mane's price is a reason not to invest in him; he could become a midfield Kane if he keeps up his current form 🙂

It just feels like if I'm going with triple Arsenal eventually and if Sanchez really is as "essential" as people say he is, then Leicester at home is the perfect fixture to take a risk. If it was for free and if I had a third free transfer I'd have done it already, just not sure if I can justify the hit when its a 9.6 mill midfielder at home to Burnley that I'm getting rid of 😛

Mane is an interesting one, clearly very dangerous, best attacking performer at the moment in that team, but I'm still shackled by Bertrand on the bench (he has a game in GW27 so I'm ok with keeping him) so I'll leave you to him 😉 think he'll get regular minutes?

Who's your armband going on this week mate? 😀 you're on a roll!

Thank you IM 🙂 I think I might be punting on Defoe, as dangerous as that sounds. You've inspired me with your own bold armband antics 😉

Yes, I think Mane is the first name on the teamsheet now as far as midfield is concerned. Tadic didn't even start the last match.

I should have said - I won't be shipping ADM immediately. Will wait for the Burnley game to pass.

Oh BTW - my Scout Picks are up: http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/comment/9695760 🙂

I appreciate the post, these are somewhat rare around these parts.

Think getting Ozil sealed your fate. You won't need Alexis if you can cover his points with Caz + Ozil. It entirely possible that may be a better combo to have. Its tempting to get rid of ADM, I'm equally frustrated (mostly at LVG more than anything) but shipping him out before Burnley is asking for trouble.

Beware It's really easy to get swayed on these boards. Do what you feel is right.

        Thanks RuberX! 🙂

Yep, I was sure that going with Ozil and Caz would be the better road to go down over Sanchez for now, but then I looked at my team and my 3m in the bank this morning and then the thoughts of shipping AdM excited me.. Unfortunately it's Burnley at home, which feels like the type of fixture where if I keep AdM then ManU will draw 1-1 and if I sell him, they'll win 3-0 😛

        Appreciate the feedback! 🙂

form over fixtures, man united are playing really badly atm and falcao needs lots of changes to score, burnley are no mugs (yes im serious) and will go to Old Trafford with 10/11 men behind the ball and we'll struggle to create chances.

Johnson. Had a great PPG/PPM last season, and doing the same this. Otherwise Larsson, but he no longer seems to be on pens

    Panti,
    Ivan,Clyne,Pva
    Hazard,Sanchez,ADM,Walters
    Giroud,Aguero,Kane

    Krul,Boyd,Hutton,Baird

    2fts 2.8 itb,
want to ditch Baird and possibly ADM because he was absolute C**P yesterday.

Baird>Wollscheid bench for this week or Bellerin?
Not sure what to do with ADM for this week even if they have got Burnley who have much better form then UTD
