Captain Sensible – Gameweek 27

Our pre-Gameweek members article which focuses on the main captaincy contenders arrives once again this evening. As always, we take a three-part approach which includes the weekly poll standings, the Opta statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the armband conundrum.

The Captain Poll

With Chelsea and Spurs out of the weekend equation, Sergio Aguero is the leading option (24%) ahead of City’s tough trip to Liverpool. The Argentine has delivered points in each of his last four Gameweeks and a midweek strike against Barcelona means he’s scored in three successive matches in all competitions. Delving into the data, Liverpool have been far more impressive on the road in recent matches – although they’ve chalked up five straight shut-outs on their travels, the Reds have kept out their opponents in just one of the last five at Anfield.

Arsenal’s home encounter with Everton sees Alexis Sanchez sit in second spot. Over 18% have backed the Chilean to end a three-match barren spell against a defence that’s just conceded twice at home to Leicester. Sanchez has scored or assisted in eight of his ten home starts, whilst Olivier Giroud – backed by 6% – has racked up three goals and two assists in his last four starts. Santi Cazorla is also in contention, with 5% looking to the Spaniard to maintain the form that has produced three sets of double figures in the last five Gameweeks.

With our options somewhat limited, a couple of misfiring options are also ranked highly. Romelu Lukaku – with a single league goal in the last 12 Gameweeks – and Angel Di Maria, who has failed to find the net since Gameweek 7, have both been selected by 11%. Stewart Downing remains under the radar, with just 4% of the votes cast as the Hammers welcome Palace to Upton Park. David Silva is backed by 3% for City’s trip to Anfield, though Daniel Sturridge and Raheem Sterling hover around the 1% mark in spite of their visitors’ dire defensive displays.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Good to go for this GW?

    Forster
    Kompany. Cresswell. Kelly**
    Sterling. Ozil. Sanchez. Sinclair
    Aguero. Rooney

It's between Rooney or Sturridge. Can't decide

Sturridge just played 110 minutes and limped off after playing terribly... Rooney I think

Rooney is utterly logical with RVP injured - upfront and on pens against Sunderland (h).

It's just the residue of game after game in midfield that makes it feel weird. In any other season you wouldn't think twice.

I have done the move though I have to admit I was hesitant. But Rooney (c) for me.

        Easy decision for me:

Aguero (C) 6.5 ppg: against an exhausted Liverpool team

Alexis (VC) 6.5 ppg: doesn't need to be the focal point of his team to score goals.

Alexis reminder: He scored 21 goals playing alongside Messi & Neymar. Don't tell me there's no defense in La Liga, Liverpool and Man City scored 100+ goals in PL last season.

Completely forgot that Liverpool has a Thursday match at Istanbul. That changes a lot. City players may not be that bad options after all.

I fully support Balo, makes no sense for Henderson to take it just cuz he is the captain.

I still remember some people on this forum heavily chanting for Demba Ba to succeed at a big club, back when he was banging them in for Newcastle. Its hard to say i told you so without gloating, but i said it; big fish in a small pond. He`ll never succeed at a top, top european club.

Wasn't actually that bad at Chelsea. Their best striker last season. Admitted, the competition wasn't great.

Thats true, but alongside Torres and Eto`o most players would look decent. The point is that he might do okay, but he just doesnt have the skillset to really succeed at the highest level. Hes too reliant on the team playing to his strengths, and they are limited.

Meh. They had 20 minutes second half where they looked good. The sending off was plain wrong, but City just doesnt have the European formula. Much like United before Fergie read a book on cynicism.
