Monitor – Jason Puncheon

Having delivered 131 points in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game last time around, hopes were high for Jason Puncheon’s prospects as the new season got underway. The Palace winger quickly found his form and served up a goal and three assists in the opening six matches under Neil Warnock to suggest he could be worthy of our attentions once again.

As the Eagles started to struggle, Puncheon fell completely off our radars on the back of 14 successive blanks which saw his price slip down to 5.5 by the time Alan Pardew rolled up in Gameweek 21. Under the new manager, it’s been a different story altogether – two goals, four assists and eight bonus points has earned him 46 points in eight appearances, compared to 47 points in the first 20 rounds of matches.

With Palace poised to host QPR, West Brom and Hull in the next six, in addition to travelling to Stoke and Sunderland, expectations are building for Puncheon to maintain his recent momentum over the final three months of the campaign. We cast an eye over his displays across both periods and assess his contribution against other midfielders to ascertain his impact since Pardew took the Selhurst Park helm.

      Injury wasn't it?

He's fit now though and cant seem to get back in the team.

Paul McShane may be crap but he shows passion, and has actually improved their defence slightly.
Not sure why Alex Bruce is ahead of him too though.

With all the talk of people getting bored and thinking about quitting FPL what changes can be made to keep us interested in the last 3rd of the season?

We all have the same 8-9 players and it's not even fun cheering on their points. Do you think scrapping the Jan WC would make a difference or even reducing the Jan WC to 5 transfers maximum because post- Jan we all have the same teams.

I personally lose interest at this stage with only the DGWs to look forward to

Scrapping the Jan wildcard would mix things up a bit. As someone who uses there's before GW4 every season it definitely makes things easier knowing there's another one coming.

A big DGW tends to shake things up. It's a shame that all of the Premier League teams have done rubbish in the FA Cup. Also there is nothing stopping you from bringing in players outside of the template. There are plenty of midfield options that could do very well in the coming week for example.

Aye, and it's good fun to root for your differential and even more so when they get you the points. Crazy to think that on current form, nearly every Pool asset is a differential right now and aren't owned by the masses in to top 10k.

Cout, Punch, Mane, Studge, Ivan, Siggy, Pool defense, a lot to choose from and all proven fantasy assets (bar Mane), who have a good enough track records to warrant investment IMO. Not to mention all are on top form as of right now.

I see no problem having even three of those on your team, let alone one.

It'll pass. There were times early in the season when a template emerged which then fell apart. The current consensus on 5/6 players will pass.

Totally agree on the 1st half of this season. No template lasted more than 3 weeks and I loved it. It's just every season post-Jan gets really boring

Last year I was 300k, at january I was at about 250k. I couldn't move. To make it interesting you have to re do a whole team. Sturridge Costa Austin up front would be exciting. Siggy/sterling/mane/haz

Bored quitters are just having a bad season. Wusses

I think the Jan WC should go though, most casuals are already long gone so the 'keeping people interested' argument fails. Makes things far to templatey

How did he look vs Arsenal I only watched Match of the Day and QPR looked awful and Austin only had one shot . You can say this means he can do something out of nothing but Sakho could have had 2 or 3 easily against Chelsea .

Just keep for now I guess, no rush and definitely not Sterling for the time being as he's, playing RWB with Ibe out.

Guess in the future you could dabble with Punch to Cout if he underwhelms or suffers a serious dip in form, but no rush. You have two solid differentials there, no need to take them out for now.

You gotta put some value on it right?
So you need to make a few assumptions,
Let's play it around a dgw so
          A-you avoid hits +8
B-you play the fixtures and your ahead as most have only 1ft +8
C-you can get in the relevant personnel in one swoop with 10gws to go and ditch any deadwood while others stutter +8

          Total +24 give or take.

Puts a lot of stress on the rest of your defense having an empty there though. A punt on Schlupp could be nice as you can start him this GW and also maybe a couple others throughout the rest of the season not to mention the double.

Baird only real concern bar Wolly's confirmed injury like others have said, if you want to rearrange to get Costa in and Ivan, guess this would be the best route spread out over 3 weeks IMO

      Baird to Dawson/Naughton
      Clyne to Toby
      Eriksen to Cout/Mane/Punch
      Austin to Costa
      Rose to Ivan?

Punch on paper has the better fixtures, but Mane IMO will outscore and has better fixtures in the next three. So Mane for me still as I trust him to carry the Saints attack from here on out

I really don't know what to expect from the Saints attacking wise. They really have been appalling going forward. Don't really see them scoring many goals.

But like you said, it'll probanly be Mane when they score.

Really torn on this one. 🙁

        1. Zasa

I know how you feel PoP, as I also got Mane in 2 GW's ago, I still think there's reason to be optimistic though. No, they may not score many goals but I feel with him carrying the offensive burden and him getting the chances/touches in the box, I think he'll prove his worth over the next three.

He's looked great going forward, the team just isn't clicking up top like you pointed out but Koeman needs goals and he's their best bet at keeping their contention in the top 5 alive.

With Palace although Punch has been great, they just have so many outlets for attack and it's hard to pinpoint where the best source of points will come from even though Punch's stats have been through the roof and he's been a menace up top for them. I'd just stick with Mane until the next three if you can, or two at the very minimum. He just loves making runs in the box and the team is always looking to supply him the final ball when possible.

Saints are almost Chelsea quese in the sense that they score few goals, but they have designated (if you may) goalscorers you can count on, so when there's a goal you can almost guarantee it'll come from one of Hazard or Costa (or an assist). The same logic can be applied to Saints in a sense, as with Pelle proving incompetent up top, the team is relying on Mane's goal to finish off games.

I trust Mane to prove his worth PoP, stick with him IMO.

As they showed against City they are more than capable without him. He did look better against Burnley, but that was against Burnley. They still have FA Cup, and I just think that BR will be a little careful with his minutes and he may get another game or two off from here until the end of the season. He also seems to be routinely subbed off which dents his appeal somewhat for me as well. I could be wrong, but I would be surprised to see him start every league game for the remainder.

            • 9 Years

Those are solid points there, can't really counter it as I now feel even more secure about his place on my team 😯 Those subbings off have also massively dented his BAPs potential as well and captaincy at the same time.

You're probably right that he'll be micro-managed 'til the end though, have him battle hardened for next season.

You think it's time to let go Walsh? If he's not playing the 90, at 11.3m, that could really ease my Ivan transfer.

                  Well aren't you a cock?

Looking at your side its fairly obvious Mane should go.

But I'm assuming you don't have the funds to go Hazard from Mane because like a tube you got Vert rather than Rose for the dgw?

Also I'm imagining you tried to be clever taking Hazard out in the first place? If so you've created this mess yourself but your rolling your eyes at me when I suggest holding two good players at home to Leicester.

I'd have done Mane>Hazard if I kept Hazard. It also let me get Silva.

                    So, my plan worked.

Jury is still out on Vert vs Rose and even if I had Rose I couldn't do Mane>Hazard for free.

Silva better option than Fab imo.

        Very much so.

Going to hold, should've got Silva in.

Stick for here Tony, IMO. Great backline for the week, so no worries there, and the midfield is also firm. I can only really critique the Fab pick, as he's been in ill form of late and I think there are better and cheaper options right now tbh.

Frontline's great as well, so that's a solid side Tony definitely save and have 2 FT's in the bank. Would look to downgrade Fab soon , or do a straight swap to Silva if you like him.

Cheers Zasa to think I got Fabregas just this week past.

Poor call but when your on it the moves flow and hit when not they are duds.

I'll hold him and have the two frees.

        Thanks!

Aye, it was probably a good move though as Fab was played in the hotel right? I know how you feel, sometimes it just feels so right in the moment, just unlucky for the move not to pay off Tony.

Aye, sensible pick there for sure, downgrading him also gives you more wiggle room if you want to upgrade say Austin or Terry in the future, good luck!

Think I'll go Costa or Ivan and attack the next dgw.

            Possibly Mahrez too.

Solid moves there, definitely the holy trinity for the DGW, IMO.

Mahrez, what a player that guy is, hopefully start to gain some bit of form before the DGW just to assure us 😉

I think Walsh has a good point there below, if you're going to get rid of Fab, may be better to get rid now for Silva who plays Burnley.

This could be the way to play alright.

My weakness this year has been a reluctance to put the bullet in a bad choice.

Aye, it's always hard to correct an error made only a week ago, but it's definitely for the better. Can't see Fab getting much against Saints in what will probably be a very closed and tight game, City may dismantle Burnley next week.

You should go for it Tony, for sure

I would rather do Fab to Silva than save.

    My team for next week:
    Foster
    Bellerin Azipuecuelta Dawson
    Silva Sanchez Moses Puncheon
    Kane Kun Austin

    Bench:
    De Gea Larsson Clichy Clyne

    I have 2FT and 2.5m in bank

Thinking to do clichy to moreno/west ham or stoke defender
    and Austin> Sakho/Berahino
    How does it look?

    Sterling or Coutinho?

Cout for now and the immediate future if Sterling stays in the RWB role with Ibe out.
Cout for sure right now, he's rarely missed a league game since December where BR deployed the 3421. Also, he's in great form right now and Pool's attack has been great

I'm going to go against the grain on here and say Sterling. Coutinho is a brilliant player, don't get me wrong, but he isn't going to score screamers from outside the box every week. He will pick up assists, although I think Sterling is the better option, he has goals and assists in his locker even when playing out wide.

What does everybody think about a double Chelsea defence? Already have Terry and have enough cash for Wollscheid -> Ivanovic (might even do this move if he is confirmed fit). Both have attacking potential and with Ivanovic going through a good attacking spell with good fixtures coming up it could be a nice differential.

    Thoughts?

I like it, but I can't help but think there are still fantastic alternative cheaper options like with Southampton and West Brom. That said, if you can fund it, it is a very nice differential at this stage.

Agreed. My defence would be Terry, Ivanovic, Bertrand, Bellerin, PvA with one of the latter two probably going to be shifted to Yun, if PvA has lost his place or Debuchy returns for Arsenal.

So most weeks (except for this week) I'd probably play Terry, Ivanovic, Bertrand.

It is a decent differential imo and with the season becoming less about value it could pay dividends. Although obviously it'll limit by upgrading options in the front 7 area, although I don't mind holding onto Mane for the foreseeable future

Yep could be a nice calculated little gamble 🙂 It's just so dependent on attacking returns from Ivan and a lesser extent to Terry. They simply must keep ticking over to some degree to be worth their price. Very expensive clean sheets to pay for, so if you feel confident that Terry may nick 2 more goals and Ivan a couple more assists and a goal or so until the end of the season you will likely done yourself a service.

That's true, yeah. But Ivanovic has been in ripe attacking form as of late.

But yes that's a good point.

Difficult to argue against, there's such good value there. Only thing is could the money be better spent elsewhere

In my situation I don't see where it could be, happy to hold on Mane for their nice upcoming fixtures, same with Austin.

In the FA cup is it already decided which quarter finalsts will play which other quarter finalist in the semis or is it drawn at random?

Has to be drawn but irrelevant for FPL.
