Suspensions

The Suspension Tightrope – Gameweek 28

Three players tumbled off the Suspension Tightrope in Gameweek 28’s midweek fixtures, having picked up their 10th yellows of the campaign. Alan Hutton, Gareth Barry and Lee Cattermole will sit out their side’s next two matches as a result.

Hutton will be sidelined for the Villains’ FA cup quarter-final clash against the Baggies this weekend and the Gameweek 29 trip to Sunderland. Barry misses Everton’s home tie against Newcastle and a visit to Loftus Road, while Cattermole sits in the stands as the Black Cats welcome Aston Villa to the Stadium of Light and travel to West Ham in their next two.

On April 12, the requisite number of cumulative yellows that warrants a ban will increase to 15. Until that date, players resting on nine yellows will have to time their tackles to perfection. Swansea’s Neil Taylor and Stoke’s Phil Bardsley were joined by Cesc Fabregas, Ciaran Clark and Seb Larsson in the precarious nine club this week. Fabregas’ 30.1% ownership will doubtless be wincing each time the Spanish playmaker attempts a challenge in Chelsea’s next four ties (SOU, hul, STO, qpr) before the cut-off date.

With regards to players currently serving suspensions, Joey Barton and Mile Jedinak sat out the first of their respective three and four-match bans for violent conduct. The QPR midfielder misses further encounters with Tottenham Hotspur and Crystal Palace, while the Eagles captain won’t be available until Gameweek 32.

In terms of those back in contention, Glenn Murray returns for Palace after serving his one-match ban during their 1-0 defeat to Southampton. In addition, Nemanja Matic, Jack Colback and Morgan Amalfitano also fulfilled their obligations, with the former expected to be fit for the Blues’ next league encounter, despite picking up a minor injury during his Capital One Cup celebrations. Adam Johnson, meanwhile, has been suspended by Sunderland pending the results of a police investigation into off-field allegations.

Although not cautioned during the match, Jonny Evans and Papiss Cisse could face lengthy suspensions after appearing to spit at each other during Manchester United’s visit to St James’ Park. The FIFA rules stipulate that any player guilty of spitting at an opponent should sit out his club’s next six matches in all competitions. Reports in the local press suggest that Cisse could be facing a seven-match ban if found guilty, given that he has already been suspended for violent conduct earlier in the season.

Discussing the matter with the Newcastle website, Cisse has acknowledged his part in the incident as he awaits an announcement from the FA:

”I have apologies to make to a lot of people today. Firstly to my teammates and to our supporters, secondly to Jonny Evans, and thirdly to every football fan who saw the incident between myself and Jonny. I reacted to something I found very unpleasant. Sometimes it is hard not to react, particularly in the heat of the moment.”

Evans, however, released a statement on the United website vehemently denying the accusations, going on to say:

“Having woken up this morning I am shocked to have seen the media coverage from last night’s match. I would like to make it clear that I did not spit at Papiss Cisse. I was totally unaware of any spitting incident and had assumed that the issue at the time was with the challenge and his attempted retaliation to the tackle from the floor. During the game Papiss Cisse and I spoke about the incident and it is clear by my reaction in the television footage that I was totally surprised by any suggestion of spitting. It is not in my character or in my nature to spit at anybody nor is it something I have ever done or would ever do. It is certainly not something that I did last night.”

Replacing ADM and in a keeper league, best player to go for here - noting that I've got no Chelsea or 'Pool attack (a friend has Costa and Hazard):

    1) Fab
    2) Siggy
    3) Mane
    4) Lallana (Sterling and Coutinho taken)

      Fabregas?
At the start of the season (and before) he was lauded, his position hasn't changed so why would he NOT be the go to guy?

    Agger Carragher Hyppia
    Reina

Not to mention others such as Owen 🙂

Well he had pace but he is certainly not a wingback. I don't feel it'd suit him. He's a great LW/LM when he could play passes and not worry too much about defending.

      Reina - inconsistent
      Carragher - one paced
      Hyppia - one paced
Riise - big shot and little else
Kuyt - workhorse with minimal talent
      Gerrard - wildly overrated
Torres - had 2 good seasons in his whole career

Being generous you have 3 world class players there, most of the rest are bang average.

FPL is a much bigger pond and more challenging.

Keyword is prime. If I went with more consistent players you'd see players like Owen or Fowler in the starting XI. You could certainly get players like Finnan (who was very consistent) in there. Kuyt being a workhorse as a wingback is exactly the point. Gerrard is one of the best midfielders on the decade.

I don't get the Gerrard hatred.

Even now he is a great player, people are comparing him to when he was in his prime and of course he is not as good anymore. But if you looked at Gerrard today without seeing him in the past you would think he is a very good player.

they tried to get him to stay but he said cause they didn't offer him a contract last year he wasn't going to stay with the rotation etc..

with the right management he could be very very good for another few years.

it's a shame but Hendo is coming good and Lucas and Allen are really solid players too.

have you watched Liverpool play in the last few months, we are a solid unit. Allen was amazing against City.

i think we are better now than we were last season. we are playing football that wins you games. took a few months for BR to find the system but it's amazing. we have become a team and a squad as oppose to having one world class player in Saurez.

Doesn't have the defensive discipline or energy to play in a midfield 2/3 and doesn't have the energy or close control to playing in the attacking two behind the striker.

His position last season, deep lying playmaker, with players around him carrying his defensive workload was perfect for him but we don't play like that, and frankly he is not the same player he once was.

If he were 25 years old, he'd be our best player and would fit perfectly into the team as an attacking mid or even as a right wing back in the current system. He's 34, nearly 35, and he doesn't have the legs for a Rodgers team and his individual quality isn't great enough anymore to justify building the team around him.

Rodgers should have had the balls to play him centre half like he said he would
Still a very good player just needs to be rested regularly to keep the energy up
Scholes did fine as a playmaker for the last 4-5 years of his career

He is still a quality player. He is a shadow of his youth but so are most players. I agree that a deep lying playmaker doest fit in BR system, but with the right management and rotation he could have the legs, depending on our opponent etc.

                    that's how we dominated Europe.

look at us last year, one of the most exciting teams to watch but it doesn't win you anything. you need defence. and some people like defensive game and tactics, look at anytime under Jose Mourinho, that's his style. some say it's boring to park the bus, other like the tactical end of it and the defence and the shape of a well organised team.

anyway you can't pick a best 11 and go look at that defensive. it's how they work as a unit and the chances they concede as well as goals.

apart from last season, Liverpool have always been very good defensively

Giroud my only consistent scorer up front at the moment but feel as if I'm missing a trick not having some of the premium midfield options. Not sure whether to sacrifice.

Currently have Moses, Hazard, Cazorla, Eriksen, Boyd with 1.8 in the bank. Probably need to get to Sanchez, Silva in for Cazorla, Eriksen at least.

    Preferred results this weekend:

    United 0-2 Arsenal
    Bradford 0-2 Reading
    Liverpool 2-1 Blackburn
    Villa 1-0 WBA
QPR 1-1 Spurs (Caulker and Eriksen)

That would produce Arsenal-Sunderland, Villa-QPR and Hull-Liverpool as the GW 33 blanks which would suit me perfectly. A United win would be much more awkward.

As a WC owner, I'm not really sure who I want to blank (thinking maybe a Man U-Chelsea blank would cause more chaos).

What week do you think would be best to use it? I assume GW34 although some prefer to use it to clean up their side after the doubles.

        • Fantasy Football Scout Member

I think it depends. If you can set yourself up with a few hits leading into DGW then use the WC to clean up, if not use it for DGW

It's only 4 GWs after DGW anyway

        1. CABAYE4
          • 12 Years
          9 years, 2 months ago

Thinking it might be better just to use it to maximise DGWers.

With the blank the week before (assuming games are re-arranged for GW34 and not 31 or 37), it would be difficult to get a lot of DGWers without sacrificing players in the blank.

Do you think an Arsenal or Man U win is better for WC owners? I'm thinking probably Man U.

Man U if you have wc as most will have 2-3 Arsenal already but probably 1 Man U if any

I agree FWIW, assuming GW34 is the big 'un that's when I'll be using it, and you're right in regards to GW33

I have zero Arsenal but I do have Rooney. An Arsenal blank in 33 gives me no problems but would be difficult for others.

The last few GW's often have some dud games in them too.

Imagine say Chelsea have won the league and are in the CL final, their main assets would be useless in GW37/38.

Not for me. If I get those results I'm sorted because I currently have no players apart from PvA from any of those 6 teams in my squad. I can proceed as normal till GW 33 and then use wildcard to reset for 34 and to the end of season.

Unbelieveable that Evans is denying spitting at Cisse. At the very least he could have checked youtube to see how ridiculous he would look. A quick search should be enough to convince him that any denial would make him look like Comical Ali.

Spitting at someone is pretty disgusting and about as low as you can go.

There isn't a lot worse than that, but Jonny Evans is having a go! Not admitting what you did is pathetic. Does he not know cameras exist?! What an unfathomable loser. Cisse has at least had the balls to say he done wrong and apologised unreservedly. Evans just makes himself look like an utter tw*t by saying what he has.

Next few? I'm avoiding Bellerin. Arsenal don't convince me at the back and Debuchy will be back in around 5 gameweeks. Far away but that's near Chelsea's DGW.

Van Aanholt is riskier but I'm sure he'll play most games over 60 minutes.

Zouma is a great shout if you have substitutes. He's been subbed on for 1 minute appearances in the past though. Shouldn't be the case now.

Schlupp is a great punt but you'd be heavily relying on attacking returns. I prefer defensive threat over offensive threat.

If I HAD to pick from that lot it'd be Zouma and PvA.

Going with Zouma, then? I may get Schlupp. But a huge reason why is I have Pantilimon. Why not get O'Shea, Alderweireld or another WBA defender?

Yeah he seems to be getting a run of games and if I get in 2 defenders then I'll have a decent bench so I can afford the odd rest.

O'Shea, just too boring, if I'm going with a Sunderland player it has to be PvA.
Alderweireld I already have 3 Southampton players!
WBA defender, not sure if I want to double up on them, they're just not that enticing.

Who would you prefer for 5th midfielder and 3rd striker:

    A) Ozil and Austin
    B) Boyd and Costa
    C) Henderson and Giroud +1m

That means benching Austin in most/all games, but Ozil is better pick than Costa I guess?

With Foster/Panti, Im working towards a back five of Zouma/Bellerin/Naughton/Alderweireld/Rose. Budget and rotation risks but think it could pay off and allow me funds elsewhere. Anyone agree?

It's almost so bad between teams that if we win this semifinal and then lost the final and bombed out of EL and missed qualifying for CL the season would still end on a high..

I need it for next week as my defence is Fonte (che), Jenkinson (ars), Vert (mun) PVA (AVL) and Hutton suspended. It's either Schlupp or -4 for Ozil and Terry instead of Sanchez and Hutton.

They are, but they also have the best fixtures. Bound to get a cleansheet at some point, if just by accident. 🙂 Schlupp might be worth it for attacking returns but I wouldn't touch any of the others.
