This Much We Know – Gameweek 28

We assess the lessons learned over the midweek matches in today’s lunchtime article. Chelsea and City’s goal scoring midfielders, Raheem Sterling and Wayne Rooney’s versatility, the flourishing form of a couple of cheap midfielders and Gus Poyet’s left-back dilemma are amongst our topics.

Hazard’s enjoying life on the road…
It took the Belgian until Gameweek 19 to finally score an away goal but since that point, he’s barely looked back. Hazard’s first six strikes of the current campaign arrived at the Bridge, with Fantasy managers frustrated by his lack of impact on the road – indeed, up until that St Mary’s match, he’d managed just a trio of assists on his travels. That Saints encounter has sparked a complete turnaround in fortunes – whilst Hazard has managed just three assists in his last five home displays, his winner at West Ham means he has now scored in four of his previous five away matches. At a time where Diego Costa has netted in just two of his last seven road trips, Hazard’s displays on the road are proving the difference as Jose Mourinho’s men close in on the title.

Silva’s sharper than ever…
The visit of Leicester seemed straightforward but City were made to work before the little Spaniard broke the deadlock. Whilst Sergio Aguero’s home displays continue to frustrate (he’s scored in only four of 11 Etihad appearances), Vincent Kompany dropped to the bench and Yaya Toure disappointed again last night, Silva’s growing importance to the City cause saw him take his tally to ten for the campaign – three more than he’s ever managed since arriving on these shores. With eight strikes and four assists in the last 13, compared to two goals and a pair of assists in 16 previous appearances, Silva’s form is carrying City’s title bid right now as the rest of Manuel Pellegrini’s big-hitters fail to scale the heights of seasons gone by.

Rooney’s place up front seems assured..
With Robin van Persie still unavailable, Louis van Gaal once again demonstrated his ruthless streak by shifting Radamel Falcao to the bench for United’s trip to St James Park. This allowed Wayne Rooney to lead the line – moving even further forward, as Marouane Fellaini occupied the role in “the hole” previously handed to his skipper in the 2-0 weekend win over Sunderland. As Ander Herrera and Daley Blind start to click in the centre of the park, Rooney’s minutes up front continue to look all the more likely given the toiling form of the rest of Van Gaal’s attackers, with Angel di Maria hauled off before the hour mark once again due to another inept display.

Sterling’s versatility can also pose problems…
Daniel Sturridge’s return to the starting XI saw the youngster switch from lone forward to right winger for the visit of Burnley. In light of Jordan Ibe’s injury absence, Brendan Rodgers could have turned to Lazar Markovic but instead opted for Sterling on the flank, as Adam Lallana joined Philippe Coutinho in the central roles behind Sturridge. Whilst Coutinho registered four attempts and created six scoring opportunities, Sterling produced one shot and a single key pass in the 2-0 win and with Ibe out for a month, his owners will be a little worried by last night’s developments.

Moses is finally delivering…
Like Liverpool’s Coutinho, the Stoke winger is one of those players who has struggled to translate his underlying statistics into Fantasy returns. Similar to the Reds’ Brazilian, Moses is finally backing up the numbers and has now notched in two of the last three Gameweeks as the Potters continue their ascent up the table. Granted, one of those goals came courtesy of the spot but it nonetheless means the Nigerian international has now served up points in seven of his last 15 league appearances, with his loan move to the Britannia helping put an end to the inconsistency that has blighted his displays in years gone by.

Phillips is thriving for the R’s…
It’s four assists in as many matches for the QPR winger under Chris Ramsey now. Phillips’ pass for Charlie Austin’s late consolation against Arsenal may not have been enough to earn his side a point but, amongst budget midfielders, he’s staking a real claim for our attentions – impressively, the 4.6-priced Phillips has played a part in every one of his side’s goals since the departure of Harry Redknapp. With Palace, Everton, West Brom and Villa in the next five, he looks a viable contender for our starting XIs, never mind as a cheap bench-warmer.

Sherwood’s diamond could be the way forward …
Villa picked the perfect time to earn a first win under their new manager by getting one over midlands rivals West Brom. Having previously rolled out a 4-3-3 formation, Tim Sherwood’s decision to opt for a midfield diamond proved crucial in breaching a defence that arrived on the back of three straight shut-outs. The new manager fielded Charles N’Zogbia in “the hole” behind front two Gabby Agbonlahor and Christian Benteke and both frontmen benefitted with a goal apiece, with the latter supplying an assist prior to his last-minute spot-kick winner. Villa now have clashes Sunderland, Swansea and QPR in the next five Gameweeks to build on their midweek momentum.

Poyet can’t afford to drop Van Aanholt…
After earning a first-team reprisal in the previous Gameweek, the Dutchman dropped to the bench for the second time in three matches as Sunderland rolled up to Hull. Handed an 18-minute sub appearance late on, Van Aanholt teed up Jack Rodwell for a vital equaliser to take his tally to four assists for the season – joint top with Seb Larsson for the Black Cats. Given that the Swede has one assist in his last 14 league outings and Adam Johnson is currently out of the picture, Gus Poyet’s decision to do without his creativity seems an odd decision. With three crucial home matches in four (ALV, NEW, SPL) up next, Poyet needs to go on the offensive and may well have a re-think as he looks to steer the Wearsiders away from the drop zone.

N’Doye could keep the Tigers up..
It’s three goals in as many starts now for the Hull winter signing after he opened the scoring in Tuesday’s home draw against Sunderland. Steve Bruce benched N’Doye for the weekend trip to Stoke due to fatigue issues but watched his side fail to find a way past the Potters defence in a 1-0 loss. Although the Tigers now have clashes against Leicester and Swansea in the next five, they also square up to Chelsea, Southampton and Liverpool over that period – whilst those latter fixtures should persuade many to look beyond the 5.5-priced striker, he clearly has the form to persevere.

There’s one spare place in the Arsenal attack…
As the season moves into the business end, the Gunners boss seems unwilling to alter his options in the final third too much. Wenger once again kept faith in his favoured quartet of Alexis Sanchez, Mesut Ozil, Santi Cazorla and Olivier Giroud, with the only change being Tomas Rosicky in for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, as the latter, along with Aaron Ramsey, Danny Welbeck and Theo Walcott, warmed the bench. With Francis Coquelin stationed in front of the back-four, the role on the right remains the only real source of uncertainty right now – in spite of having a host of options at his disposal, Wenger is clearly reluctant to rotate as he looks to clinch third spot.

Chadli is back on the radar…
Benched for the previous four league matches, the Belgian celebrated his return to the Spurs XI with a strike in last night’s narrow win over Swansea. Chadli’s eight-point haul took his average to 4.8 points per appearance – that’s identical to Christian Eriksen – and if he starts the weekend trip to Loftus Road, Fantasy interest looks set to be reignited ahead of clashes with Leicester, Burnley, Villa and Newcastle in the next five.

yes. whichever PL teams win their fixtures this weekend, they will have a blank in GW33 and likely to have a DGW34.

A key one would be Arsenal vs United.

Just realized Giggs is right: ManU is _the_ form team of PL of the season, _if_ form is defined by the ratio of result to performance, counting results as real goal difference and performance as statistical goal difference expectation from the quantity and quality of scoring chances.

I actually don't think Evans meant to spit *at* him. If you watch Evans, he seems to spit a lot generally. I think that Cisse's was deliberate however in retaliation, so the apology is warranted.

Sorry, there's no fecking way it was not intentional. Or then Evans just 100% ignores that other people exist and thinks he can just spit anywhere. He fecking leant toward Cissé and spit straight at him.

Look: he looks at Cissé, leans towards him, and spits right at him.

If he does not intend to spit at Cissé and thinks it's his right to spit at anywhere and that guy there should get himself out off the way, then that's just so much worse because it literally means he is generally not recognizing any human worth for the guy lying in the ground. In that case, he should be put in a mental asylum and banned indeterminately.

that is pretty horrific too, goes with the thinking that a referee will base his decision on the card-wave, rather than the incident. like ronaldo got rooney sent off rather than the innocuous stamp on carvalho's balls

seriously though the easy cure to this is a changing what you see. some see a gold and white dress, some see blue and black. some see a yellow card being waved, some see a birthday card being waved

Ridiculous how much is made of innocuous little flares of temper, playing 38 games of such high pressure and worldwide exposure is bound to lead to irrational acts at some stage. Hands to the face, high elbow when you go for a header, pushing a player after a bad tackle and things like spitting and throwing an arm back when being tackled should not be definite red card offenses or 3 game bans, 90% of the time they tend to be spur of the moment reactions that any player is capable of resorting to in the heat of the moment.

Tough call either way I don't mind taking 1 or 2 gambles a week, eventually they pay off. I considered benching Gru for him since he was at home and Everton are spiraling but couldn't look past Gru's form and fixture. They ended up scoring the same 8 which so many players scored this week.

No, Liv-Swa tends to be high scoring. Liverpool has scored two goals at the Liberty in three matches since Swansea were promoted.

Also, United are now at the back of two clean sheets in the row, and has only conceded more than one goal in a single gameweek ONCE since early autumn. Seriously just look it up. They don't concede many goals.

Arsenal has never conceded more than two goals against LIV at the Emirated, and beat us there two times last season. The only fixture I can see good scores from Pool players is the plum fixture that Newcastle obviously is.

fair enough on the United point - just a sad United fan here, don't know how we havent conceded more.

I do recall Liverpool having quite a bit of joy against Swansea in recent seasons though. Remember the likes of Suarez Sturridge and Gerrard (and Jonjo against himself) having alot of joy in this fixture.

Yes, but all of those matches except the Jonjo one has been on Anfield. We usually struggle at the Liberty, and has never won there in the Prem for example. Also keep in mind that Swansea kept both Arsenal and United quiet there aswell.

interesting. maybe my personal successes with Liverpool against Swansea in past seasons clouded my judgment. I definitely do remember a 5-0 somewhere. Cheers.

    Afternoon everyone!

I've updated my article with a comment about how Alexis Sanchez performed yesterday. You can check it out here:

don't need to read it because I know he played well. but here's a +1

was always just a small dip having come back abit too quick from injury. Class act.

I watched the game - he was playing well regardless of the goal. You could tell he was thinking about his recent drought though. Especially with the few he missed in the lead up to his goal. Think it will calm his nerves abit from here on out.

Hey Wakey! Just the person I was looking for!

Budget strikers, what do you think about Berahino? 3 goals in the last 4 games with 3 nice homes games coming up (STO, QPR, LEI). Could be great no?

He's not really been getting many chances, but doing well with what he's had....

I've left the search bar open on this...set it to four GW's and then do current gameweek and compare him to the top player...http://members.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/my-stats-tables/view/4671/

In isolation it looks good. I would still feel more comfortable with at least 2 Arsenal attackers as there might be some rotation or reduced minutes overall though.

Santi is still getting chances. Ramsey back might push Santi up and allow Ozil some much needed rest 🙂

Hi good folks. Need some opinions

    Pants
    Clyne Bertrand PVA Dawson Naughton
    Sanchez Hazard Cazorla Eriksen Ameobi
    Giroud Kun Kane

    1.9 banked, 1 FT.

    A) Bertrand > Ivan
    B) Caz > Silva (would take another 2 more transfers to get a Chelsea defender in next GW)
    C) Caz + PVA > Ivan, Siggy/Hendo

I'm at 3.4k at the moment.

Schlupp will be only a DGW option for me since I will prob use my WC then, don't fancy LEI for cleansheets. WHU are in abit of a confidence slump at the moment, would like to give them a couple more games.

Ozil for Caz is a decent switch imo if for free. Ozil is pretty much on 90% of set pieces now.

Clyne aye? Bert's 0.2 more expensive for me, so saves a wee bit of cash. Quite loyal to Clyne. Though I do agree Bertrand brings alot to the Soton attack and was missed when suspended

Then go for Berty. I figured it was the other way around in terms of sell price. Thought you could get more out of Clyne. Also, 20% diff in ownership in the top10K.

It makes them more balanced in attack when they are both in there.

Yea, I have had Clyne since the start of the season.

I punted on Bertrand in GW27 & GW28 - sold Terry. relatively happy coming out with a +5 point difference. But expected a little bit more.

Really do want to get Chelsea defence back in though. The plan was a 2 GW punt wihtout, and then get Terry/Ivan back. Intend to stick to the plan

I'm very surprised Chelsea are playing their match against Leicester in GW34 rather than this weekend. I guess the reason was they wanted more time to prepare for PSG, but if they beat PSG and then make it through to the last 4 of CL, and Man U beat Arsenal in the FA Cup (which means Man U v Chelsea in GW 33 will need to be rearranged), then surely they are going to have congestion overload at the end of the system when their biggest games are going to come thick and fast?

Ozil was blatantly brought down for a pen - thus him and Caz would have been in the points. And both these guys were unlucky with Green saves.

Just depends which Arsenal horse comes in - with Chelsea/Man City/Spurs there is one 'go to' guy. I fear Sanchez but its a price I pay having Ozil as I can't squeeze in both.

I need to see more than 1 goal against a relegation zone side to go leaping in.

I'm absolutely AMAZED that it's gw 28 and Downing has more points than:

    -Fabregas
    -Cazorla
    -Sterling
    -Eriksen
    -Yaya
    -Di Maria
    -Costa
    -Rooney
    -RVP

    😆
    -Giroud

Not sure why Cazorla or Toure should be that surprising tbh.

Downing's just benefitting from a more attacking West Ham set up this season

Because they are big hitters? Well done to you predicting Downing to outscore Yaya.

They aren't big hitters though. All they've done is get a load of penalties. Toure barely assists, and just scores screamers once in a while.

As long as Aguero stays fit, It's hardly surprising that Toure doesn't score as much. And i didn't predict Downing's form, just giving a reason as to why he's doing so well this season compared to usual

Others, fair enough, but Di Maria has 1000 minutes less than Downing, and Giroud has missed more than half of the season due to an injury, so Downing has almost 1500 minutes more than Giroud.

Giroud and Di Maria play in a better team, with better teammates ( sorry Doosra)

And both have more than 6 points per 90 minutes, whereas Downing's got less than 5 points per 90 minutes.

Already the minute points would get both of them significantly closer to Downing, without supposing them having scored anything in those added minutes - which would be extremely unlikely especially in case of Giroud, who would more than double his play time.

It means Downing's played 2.25 times as many minutes as Giroud. No wonder he's scored 1.7 times as many points too.

Ivan/Silva/Austin would be much better long term than Zouma/Erik (or any 8.5 or lower mid)/Costa, right? I've been saving money to get Costa back in for weeks but now I dunno if it's even worth it.

I'm tempted to get Costa as he has become a big differential in the top 1K places. At least for one gameweek.

I agree with those who say he hasn't been playing as well, and SOT is not an easy fixture, but he is still Chelsea's only striking option. Costa (C).
