The ScoutCast – Episode 153 – March

Simon March, aka Dufflinks, has been hanging around these pages since August 2011. A veteran of six Fantasy Premier League seasons, this campaign started more casual than ever, with Simon resigned to snatching the occasional live match from the other side of the world.

Against the odds, by Boxing Day he was fourth in the world. Six weeks ago, he reached the summit. As you read this, Simon sits on top of the FPL world by 30 points with his Wildcard still tucked away in his pocket and the whole Fantasy Football Scout community behind him. No pressure.

With Granville absent with a hangover from a mid-life stag do and another United disappointment, this week’s ScoutCast is dedicated to Simon’s story, as he wakes in the early hours to join Jonty and myself for a special edition.

We overcome countless gremlins to discuss how Simon gets by on rations of four live matches a season, how he can recall every point hit he’s ever taken and how one lucky cat may just hold the secret to his success over the remaining ten Gameweeks.

We end this episode with a shout-out to community legend, Doosra – get well soon Doos.

We’ve included a fully edited version of the ScoutCast on iTunes and via this link or the player below.

If you want to see Simon, myself, Jonty and the lucky cat in person, you can view the full un-edited Hangout movie below. Be warned – it really is a “warts and all” production.

Be sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel if you want to get an alert for next week’s Hangout and future live episodes.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

hi guys sitting in an office in BKK with no air-con so my brain cells are frying...

need your valuable input for this lot:

    Pants (Krul)
    Terry/Clyne/PVA (Haidara/Jones)
    Haz/Caz/Silva/Erik (Boyd)
    Kun/Kane/Austin

    1 FT, 1.5 ITB

Obvious worries are Haidara and Jones. You think 1 FT is enough to trsf out Haidara or better take a hit and transfer out BOTH?

Possible replacements would be Bellerin, Dawson (WBA), Naughton or etc.

    Thanks guys

I'm hovering on this -4 hit for one of the following:

Jones > Ivanovic (setting up for GW34 - and Ivanovic will score big next few GWs)

    or

    Austin > Giroud

I just don't like taking hits, but can genuinely justify each of these.

Shaw could return with Rojo moving back in the center with Smallng. Although Jones is the best CB we have got, but for some reason LVG doesn't use him often, so I wouldn't be too sure about hi playing.

That could be good, but you might not have 11 players this week with PVA also a worry. I like the idea but depends if you want to take the risk.

    Panti, Foster
    Terry, PVA, Bellerin, Haidara, Fonte
    Alexis, Silva, Hazard, Punch, Boyd

It seems that for most on here the favoured captain options this weekend are Aguero or Sanchez. People are saying that other choices are risky. Well I guess they mist have a different idea of risk to me.

Aguero's game was decimated last weekend by Bony's first start. Aguero played as central striker with Aguero deeper and wide. Most of Aguero's usual chances went to Bony and Aguero was starved.

This is confirmed by the BPS. Aguero gathered 5 baseline points, one of his lowest totals of the season. When he has scored big hauls he has usually amassed 40-60 baseline BPS. This makes him a very risky captain choice until he and Bony learn to play together (unless Bony is rested which seems unlikely). In addition, Aguero may only play 60-70 minutes with a vital CL game coming up in midweek.

Sanchez has scored 1 PL goal in the last 2 months (5 starts). His output has (predictably) suffered with the return of Giroud and Ozil to the Arsenal team and the goals/assists being more spread around. He is no longer the main man at the Emirates - a very good player no doubt but not the outstanding FPL option he was from October to December.

Sanchez is still capable of a haul but like Aguero he has a big CL game midweek and may not play 90. Overall, captaining him is very risky right now.

What makes people see Aguero and Sanchez as 'safe' options is (a) popularity, and (b) historic production. But neither of those make for a good captain option if current circumstances are ignored. They may feel safer but in actual fact the feeling of safety is a mirage in both cases.

Puncheon, Kramaric, Giroud, Silva, Lukaku, Rooney and Sturridge are all probably better captain options this weekend. Personally I will captain Rooney (who has an excellent record against Spurs and is playing up front again, at last) but if I didn't have him I'd go for Silva or Giroud without question.

    1. Ruth_NZ
      • 9 Years

2nd para should read: "Bony played as central striker with Aguero deeper and wide."

    2. JasonG123
      • 10 Years
      9 years, 1 month ago

You can't infer from one game that Aguero's output will be reduced based on one game with Bony. Based on his high ownership and explosive potential, it is a massive risk not to captain him. That said, Rooney or Hazard could be a good punt.

      1. Holmes
        • 10 Years

Any pick against the crowd is considered as punts/idiocity for some reason 😀

          • 10 Years
          9 years, 1 month ago

The majority are usually correct. Captaincy punts needs to be considered carefully and only in weeks when there is no obvious choice. This is not that week.

          1. Ruth_NZ
            • 9 Years
            9 years, 1 month ago

No, the majority are not usually correct. It's just that you lose less ground when you make the same mistake as the majority. In that sense taking that approach could be seen as safer. I prefer to call it mediocrity.

          2. Holmes
            • 10 Years
            9 years, 1 month ago

Majority might be usually correct, but not always. From what I can remember, around 50% of the time THAT hot pick have been outscored by some other player who is popular but not a hot captaincy pick. There are many options around every week but we just avoid because there is RISK we'll drop in rank.
Even if someone feels that Aguero/Sanchez arent good pick this week, they'll go for them for above mentioned reason.

      2. Ruth_NZ
        • 9 Years
        9 years, 1 month ago

Not only can I make that inference, I do make it.

It's called judgement and it's based on actually watching and understanding football.

Both are very good players. Both are capable of doing well. But to consider them safe picks right now demonstrates a lack of analysis and a reliance on the 'comfort blanket' of conventional wisdom.

I do understand your thinking. here is the but, but i am solely concerned with mini leagues and am leading by a bit.

The main chasers have loads of other problems just shifting injured players. I know the way they play too (i think). They will all captain Aguero as will I. There is the flip side to that i know saying well go for Haz, Silva etc as they will score more but i, personally, dont need to take that 'risk'

Sure. I can easily understand strategic reasons for captaining Aguero (as you described) although personally I think it's too early in the season for "blocking".

As for "we'll see on Monday" - well, no we won't. My reasoning holds whether Aguero and/or Sanchez score well this weekend or not. Bad or risky decisions can get lucky as any poker player knows. 😉

Great points Ruth_NZ, you prob forgot to mention that, just like Aguero, Silva may also be pulled out by 70mins Tops. Esp if they have a comfortable lead.... I personally wanted to do Sanchez ---> Ozil, then have funds for Yoshinda ---> Ivanovic. But eventually opted for Yoshinda ---> Terry & Rose ---> Yun and my team, which i think is not bad, is now:

              ---Terry Dawson Ballerin (Bertrand Yun)---
              ---Sanchez Carzola Hazard Silva (Erriksen)---
              --- Aguero Kane Gayle---

Gayle is next on the Chopping list, then Erriksen in GW34

Mate, you don't yet know how last Wednesday will affect Chelsea. I was at the game and I haven't seen such a shot performance for a long time. Much as I love Ivan I wouldn't captain him this weekend because I don't trust the clean sheet.

I'd go for Hazard if you want a Chelsea player but I think Ozil is a better choice myself.

Saints attack been woeful though and Mourinho will be demanding a reaction. Were Arsenal game on tv I'd prob do Ozil though 😉

Yep. There is an element of doubt about many captain options this weekend.

Silva is probably the safest bet in my view. Good luck in any case.

Maybe a punt too far for me, obviously could be genius. For fun and if chasing do it. If leading and consolidating no. Hes still a bit of a differential in top 1000/ 10000 but that will change soon i guess

Big lead in main mini league so not too fussed bout playing it safe. Still in fpl cup and have similar team to oppo that's why fancy an off the wall captain

In your case i think the defence needs to be sorted out 1st mate..maybe Vert--->Ivan then Creswell--->naughton to free up some cash for future trnsfrs....

form not on their side & don't you think investing 5.6m on a westham dfndr is too much(although he can assist sometimes but those are rare)...that money saved can be used to upgrade erik to an arsenal MF.....but thats me!! 🙂

    Forster

    Terry bellerin Dawson pva naughton

    Hazard cazorla sterling silva mane

    Aguero giroud Kane

    2ft and 0.1 in bank. 2200 rank

    Pva to someone?
    Mane and pva out?
    Something else?

Any advice greatly appreciated. Will rate teams back and give advice.

Keep Mane. PvA out, not sure who are the best defenders at that price range.

Very nice team. The only think I could think of is getting Alexis by moving out Sterling & Caz and getting Alexis and maybe Siggy if you can get him. If not Punch's worth a shout.

Sterlings been a great differential for me. Really helped me move up ranks. Caz I'm thinking of upgrading, but not sure of Sanchez or ozil? Really want to upgrade terry to Ivanovic as well. I never use mane so tempted to ditch! Might need him in next few weeks around double though... Completely flustered! Thanks for advice

Yep. You have a very nice team there.

The problem is benching one of the front 8 every week. Mane is a nice differential but not if you aren't playing him. 😉

You also have a problem with potentially 5 players facing blanks in GW33 - that will need reducing in the coming weeks.

Personally I'd do something like Mane to Fletcher and JT to Ivan this week. Then Cazorla to Sigurdsson or Eriksen next week. You could then ship out Giroud, Sterling or PvA nearer to GW33 so that you can field 11.

Problem with my luck is that from past 8 weeks it is happening continuously that the player which i remove from my team have scored a big points in next two gameweek and the player which i bought is giving ony 2,3,4,5,6 points which is driving me crazy as it is now happened to me 8 times .
