PlayON Picks – Gameweek 29

Our Friday lunchtime analysis of the PlayON Player Price List arrives once again. As always, we offer a couple of picks per position: one essential weekend target and a left-field alternative for your consideration.

PlayON have extended their deadline for submitting teams so you can now tinker with your starting XI right up until the first kick-off each week – tomorrow that’s 12.45pm, when Crystal Palace welcome QPR to Selhurst Park.

Goalkeepers – Costel Pantilimon
With uncertainty surrounding the Sunderland defence, we’ve opted for the security of starts offered by the big Romanian. Despite registering a single shut-out in four, the 7.3m-priced Pantilimon has still produced 1200+ points in each of his appearances over that period due to his propensity for delivering save points – owned by 9% of PlayON managers, he now plays host to an Aston Villa side that has failed to score in their last six road trips. Our essential goalkeeper is Ben Foster at home to Stoke. The Baggies kept three consecutive clean sheets before the 2-1 away loss against Villa and despite the defeat, Foster still scored 950 points with five saves in that match. Available for 6.5m, he is currently the most popular keeper for the Gameweek, with 14% ownership in PlayON.

Defenders – Jeffrey Schlupp
Leicester’s out-of-position defender gets the nod for the home encounter with Hull. Schlupp’s berth on the left of Nigel Pearson’s midfield has already served up four goals in all competitions this term and with the Tigers netting once in their last four road trips, he looks a solid option for points at both ends of the pitch. Owned by 7% of PlayON managers, the Ghana international sets you back just 6.7m. We also opt for Scott Dann (7.1m.) as Palace entertain QPR at Selhurst Park. The centre-half recently scored his second of the season and has benefitted from Alan Pardew’s focus on set-pieces – Dann has registered more touches inside the box than any defender since the new manager took charge. Add to that his 45 clearances in six matches (worth 25 points each in PlayON) and the 12%-owned Dann could be in the points against an R’s attack that have already failed to score against their weekend opponents earlier in the season.

Midfielders -Jason Puncheon
The 8.5m-priced midfielder has been playing more centrally recently for Alan Pardew’s side and is capable of impressive scores, as demonstrated in the 3-1 win at West Ham, in which he assisted all three goals. At home to a QPR side that have conceded at least twice goals in 11 of their 13 road trips, the 34%-owned Puncheon could be instrumental again for the Eagles. Our essential midfielder is David Silva, as City make their way to Burnley. Coming in at 13.1m this week, he’s racked up four goals and a pair of assists in the last six Gameweeks, averaging almost 1900 points per appearance over that period. Up against a defence with a single shut-out in 17 league outings, his relentless form looks likely to continue – it’s no surprise to see he currently sits in over 49% of PlayON sides heading into the weekend.

Forwards – Saido Berahino
The West Brom frontman bagged his twelfth strike of the season in the 2-1 loss to Aston Villa last time out and is expected to shrug off a knock in time to face Stoke tomorrow afternoon. Available for just 8.9m and owned by 9% of Fantasy managers, Berahino welcomes the Potters to the Hawthorns in excellent form – he’s scored in three of the last four now and has fired 11 shots on target (worth 200 points in the PlayON scoring matrix) in his last nine matches. With Silva on board in midfield, we’ve decided to overlook Sergio Aguero as our essential striker and instead turn to Wayne Rooney (13.7m) after his goal against Arsenal in the FA Cup. Having netted four times in the last five matches in all competitions, the 15%-owned Man United skipper seems to be in the midst of one of his scoring streaks ahead of the visit of a Spurs defence with a single clean sheet in nine. Rooney has scored nine of his ten league goals this season at Old Trafford and will be desperate for a response after Monday’s disappointing cup exit to Arsenal.

I'm currently finding myself at a bit of a crossroads.

I'm hovering around the 10k mark and top of all my mini leagues which is great. This has now created the problem however that I need to play it safe with things like captain decisions to keep on top of the mini leagues, which makes it basically impossible to climb rank.

Anyone in a similar situation? Any advice on how to accomplish both?

Take some risks, have fun. Top 10k doesn't win you anything

top 1k doesn't win you anything either, but mini-leagues might win you something.

      Don't "play it safe"..

Just keep doing what you've been doing all season to get you where you are now.

Wenger would know that West Ham have a depleted defence..so he might rest Sanchez, Giroud to keep him fit for the Important CL Game...

United somehow manages to play in big games..so he might blank..and DDG must be practicing extra hard after Welbeck error...

I wouldn't call Welbeck's goal an error on DDG's part 😛 he's been immense in goals, but he's a one man defense, he has some fairly bad defenders playing in front of him..

Oh man, a 20 year birthday too!

I personally prefer OK Computer and, maybe, Kid A, but this is undeniably a classic. All the better given that the music press at the time thought they were a 'one hit wonder'!

Agreed, I think Kid A and OK Computer are their best. It is testament to how staggeringly incredible they are (my favourite band) that you could argue this isn't even in their top 3 (In Rainbows runs it close). For practically any other band, The Bends would be their defining work. I would be as bold as to say they have the greatest body of work of any band ever.

Really enjoyed your Scoutcast appearance by the way, I'd be an egomaniac in your position! Best of luck with securing the title, long way to go but what a position to be in!

For managers trailing in their ML by 25-40 points, when do you think it is the right time to take risks? Now, with a different captain like Sanchez or Kane? or just play it safe for now to stay within reach and take risks after GW34?

What are people's thoughts on this?

No risks needed for that amount - just prepare for the DGW now and hope your rival doesn't do as good a job as you.

I think a lot of good players will wreck their season by taking big risks too early. Playing conservative could, potentially, be a differential in itself right now. If a rival's risk pays off, you still have GW33/34 to pull it back.

        cheers, Dufflinks

Yes, keen to play safe until GW34 and then either have a good DGW or take risks from GW35-38

Better to keep the hope alive, than drop further at this time

Dunno why people come to the conclusion of diversification on a defence with differnt players from differnt team, as statistically you would need to diversify accross 15 different teams to actually get any advantage. Am I not right thinking this? Mathematically anyway.

Well the basic thought is if you double or triple up on one team and they concede just ONE goal, you lose a lot of points. It's risky, but can be great as well.

        Don't be so sure:
7 goals in 5 games since Sherwood came in.

Still stuck with Downing, should've flogged him but now tempting to stick with these fixtures coming up after Arsenal:

    SUN - lei - STO

Good fixtures imo. Any other Downing owners here? Sell or stick?

I'd stick if I still had him by now, not that many obvious replacements, he has good fixtures, and you'll want more transfers saved in the coming weeks.

Haven’t been on FFS as much as I’d like recently so not clued up on DGW permutations. Need to sort out my defence…

    Pant/4m
    Kos / Wolly* / Hutton* / Dawson / Baird*
    Hazard / Sanchez / Eriksen / Punch / JWP
    Austin / Kun / Kane

    Got 1FT and 5.4m ITB

    Thinking Hutton -> Schlupp

Alternative would be to bring a Chelsea defender in. Any other options worth considering?

    What you reckon lads?

i wudn't go against convention if it meant selling sanchez for west ham. saving the transfer gives you extra maneuverability in the transfer market next week. two transfers in case of injury or suspension, and no chance of bashing your head off walls cos u sold sanchez and he bagged a huge haul. honestly see the saved transfer as a much better move. i'd like to know tho why u don't

You say it's "selling Sanchez for West Ham" but it could also be seen as "buying Ozil for West Ham" 😉

I just think that Sanchez is playing deeper, wider, and is looking to create more than he was when he was exploding with points, he's only scored 5 goals and 5 assists in 17 weeks, and I fancy Ozil to outscore him for much cheaper.

No doubting Sanchez's ability, but I don't think he'll be the "second striker" that everyone thinks he will be, not with Giroud and Ozil and Ramsey all back (and attacking)

    Terry, Kosc, Dawson
    Sanchez, Hazard, Silva, Eriksen
    Aguero, Austin, Kane

    Krul, Clyne, Boyd, Naughton

    1FT, 0.3 ITB

    A) Boyd > Mahrez (can't afford price changes)

    Foster
    Zouma Bellerin PVA
    Hazard Sanchez Sterling Silva
    Aguero Austin Giroud

    Myhill Dawson Bertrand Boyd

Doing well considering no Kane but my mini league rival is closing the gap.
I was going to save the transfer but Sterling's recent positioning and fixtures is giving concern.
Take Sterling out for Puncheon? Or maybe Siggy?

You don't have the top goalscorer in the league and top point's scorer in the game, who happens to be a full 2m less in price than Sterling (for example).

Just let that sink in for a moment.....

No idea, both will probably blank so then it just depends on which you hold in higher regard:

Fonte - better team, better defense.

      Dawson - better fixture.

You need to consider that the chance of Chelsea not scoring at home is extremely low. But he Fonte does keep a cleansheet there is a very good change he will get bonus points. Dawson I reckon its 50/50 for a cleany

Clean sheet market on an exchange:

    Chelsea 2.12
    Arsenal 2.22
    Man City 2.36
    Crystal Palace 2.44
    Sunderland 2.52
    Everton 2.58
    West Brom 2.6
    Leicester 2.62
    Liverpool 2.76
    Man Utd 3.0
    Aston Villa 3.3
    Stoke 3.4
    Hull 3.85
    Swansea 4.6
    QPR - 5.1
    Newcastle 5.3
    Southampton 5.7
    Tottenham 5.7
    Burnley 9.2
    West Ham 9.2

From a betting perspective, Newcastle and Liverpool look reasonable value to me.
