Dugout Discussion

The Dugout Discussion – Swansea vs Liverpool

A dire Gameweek 29 limps to its conclusion this evening as Swansea and Liverpool go head-to-head at the Liberty. Brendan Rodgers returns to his former club having guided the Reds to a 12-match unbeaten run since moving to a 3-4-2-1 formation and the likes of Philippe Coutinho, Raheem Sterling and Daniel Sturridge have the chance to get amongst the points against a defence with a single shut-out in six in front of their own fans.

At the back, the visitors have been a consistent source of clean sheets in recent matches. The Merseysiders have kept out their opponents in six of the last eight Gameweeks and have Martin Skrtel available after the Slovakian recovered from a head knock that forced him off on a stretcher against Blackburn Rovers in the FA Cup stalemate last time out. Mamadou Sakho also returns as one of three centre-backs as Dejan Lovren drops to the bench. Rodgers has made further changes in the wing-back roles, with Glen Johnson and Lazar Markovic dropping to the bench: Alberto Moreno is recalled on the left while Raheem Sterling looks to be deployed on the right.

The hosts, meanwhile, will be looking to bounce back from their 3-2 loss at Spurs in Gameweek 28. Prior to that defeat, Garry Monk’s men had registered back-to-back victories and earned three points in their previous match at the Liberty, courtesy of a 2-1 win over United.

Gylfi Sigurdsson was back in the goals last time out and has the upcoming fixtures to earn himself a place in our five-man midfields again, whilst Ki Sung-Yeung has notched three times in the last five and, at 5.1 in FPL, is staking a claim as a cheap budget option.

The teamsheet finds Monk forced into one change as Jordi Amat comes in for Federico Fernández who misses out for family reasons. Up front, Bafetimbi Gomis is available to lead the line after recovering from his collapse at White Hart Lane in the previous Gameweek.

Got 2 FTs this week and not sure what to do with em.. so got a luxury transfer basically
    Foster
    Terry Fonte Alderweireld
    Sanchez Hazard Silva Eriksen
    Aguero Kane Austin(6.3)
    Myhill Moses(5.2) Bellerin(4.6) Dawson
    0.9 in the bank

    Thinking of
    A) Bellerin to Sakho and bench him.. i get a nailed on defender with a probable DGW
    B) Moses + Bellerin to Naughton + Henderson
    C) Eriksen + Bellerin to Ivanovic + Henderson
    D) Downgrade a premium mid to make cash for Austin to Costa next week(prob Sanchez/Silva to Mane/Hendo/Siggy)

    Help please.. Thanks 🙂

I like B. Gets in Hendo ahead of his double. Bellerin to Naughton is a neutral move due to fixtures and Chambers so overall good

Hey DZ, anyone here planning on captaining Kane?

I posted this last night, might interest a few of you...

Since Leicester reverted to playing with 5 at the back in GW25, they conceded to...

    - Walcott and Koscielny
    - Sinclair and Bacuna (FA Cup)
    - Naismith and Upson (OG)
    - Silva and Milner
    - And kept a clean sheet against Hull

Small sample size I know, but what do these results show? No goals conceded to strikers, namely Giroud, Lukaku, Aguero, Bony, N'doye and Jelavic. Playing with 3 central defenders is clearly diminishing the impact of opposition strikers, limiting their space and increasing Leicester's chance of blocking their shots. When you add in the fact that Spurs have played a huge amount of games recently, tiredness was clearly evident in yesterday's game, and they have a tendency to be inconsistent against 'weak' teams at home, that rules out the Hurrikane as a captain contender this week for me.

I was about to captain Kane. But still not settled on it I guess. Will wait till Sunday to make my final call. It would be either Giroud / Kane / Aguero. Don't see myself picking anyone else. I think that Spurs would have to bounce back ASAP and they could do so vs Leicester

Aguero has played 6 early kick offs this season, has blanked in one, scored 6 goals and 3 assists.

THAT Spurs game was an early kick off.

Their form is a worry, the kick off time is not.

Yeah. Also off form Kun is up against a solid WBA defence.

      Costa (c) clearly for me.

Giroud is good too. Without Colo, NEW played RB Janmaat as CB, DM Colback as winger, LW Guiterrez as DM. CM Sissoko as RB. it's called a festering pile of ****.

Yeah giroud is a great pick if he gets through the Monaco game. Newcastle are in tatters. Costa could be a very good differential captain as his ownership is still very low in the top 10k.

It's not only a small sample size, there are slightly more problems with this conclusion, that is the one striker that leads the line not scoring in a game is not particularly unlikely so five games without it happening isn't particularly significant.

Sorry Innsie, but this seems pretty ad hoc to me. I don't think Leicester are very good, and Kane is very good. Like you say, 5 games is such a small sample size, and I think your argument doesn't provide full context.

Giroud didn't start, it was Alexis up top (coming off an injury).
Upson's own goal against Everton came off a Lukaku header and he had 9(!) shots that day.
Benteke also had 9 shots, and an assist.
Jelly man and Ndoye had 4 and 3 shots respectively.
      Kun had only 2 shots.

Ultimately, I think the shot numbers show that Leicester aren't doing a great job of limiting opposing strikers' opportunities, so I wouldn't count Kane out based on the last 5 games. That said, I'm probably going Kun. Form has been patchy, but I still think he's the best striker in the league by far.

PS: 3 of Lukaku's shots were blocked, dunno about Benteke because ESPN's FA Cup coverage isn't great, and none of Jelavic's were. I guess you could be right, and the back 3 could be limiting strikers' space and they haven't been good shots, but in general, more shots means more goals.

His goal today was a complete fluke, but i guess you have to be there to have it bounce off your shin for a goal. Since the shift to two wing-backs he has more liberty to push forward when they attack and has been getting his fair share of set-pieces when Gerrard isn't on the ground. He's a genuinely good option at the moment if you want to break the template!

Yes if you can't afford both.

Costa has better form, better fixtures, no midweek game, £2m cheaper is a fantastic enabler and most importantly an extra game in hand.

I think Costa will outscore Kun rest of the season.

      Also the perfect DGW (c).

Only Chelsea & Leicester have GW33 & DGW34, not possible to get 9DGW players with blanks covered.

Surely if Arsenal play the DDW34 it should have been announced already.

Teams with DGW don't have fixtures to worry after . Every logic leads to wildcard DGW34.

Hendo and Benteke are not serious long term alternatives to the above. Giroud though for sure.

Why aren't they "serious" alternatives? Just because they cost a fraction of Kun and Sanchez?

Long term? There are only 8 weeks remaining!

Both have possible DGW's before the end of the year, have good fixtures, have been outscoring Sanchez/Kun the last 4 weeks are low in ownership and I bet you most(us probably included) will own them if they have their DGW's confirmed.

No because Benteke plays for the least attacking team in the league while Aguero the most. And Hendo lies too deep and has had 2 shots inside the box in the last 6 games.

                  1. Christina.
                    • 14 Years

Kun plays for the most attacking team in the league yes. Yet he couldn't score vs Leic(h) and Burnley(a)...the two teams with the worse defense in the league.

Benteke plays for the least attacking team in the league, and Hendo is not getting into the box, yet they seem to being do well. Explain that.

Remember Ramsey and Yaya from last year? Sometimes stats means feckall in FPL.

But hey, I would stick to the template as well if I had your rank.

Ronaldo failed to score against Levante, the worst defence in La Liga, I'd still pick him.

Villa ground out a result in the derby and played a Sunderland as bad as the Sunderland that played Southampton. Apart from that they've still been awful. 2 games doesn't convince me.

I do but Hendo doesn't pass the eye test like Ramsey or Yaya for me.

Thanks. Really would like extra funds to change Hamer to Forster since Pants has a bye Week 33. Only can do it if I do Sanchez instead of Caz. Decisions, decisions.

    Morning all. Best option here?

    A) Save
    B) Santi -> Mane/Siggy
    C) Something else

    Foster
    Terry, Berty, Bellerin
    Sanchez, Hazard, Silva, Eriksen, Santi
    Aguero, Kane

    Myhill, PVA, Haidara, Perez
    Bank 0.1m, 1FT, 1WC

Cheers. Since I'll be WCing in GW34 (to load up on ARS, LIV, CHE etc) I only have 4 weeks to consider with transfers, so will probably look at either of the below next week:

        a) Ayoze -> Berahino (QPR, LEI, cpl), or
        b) Sanchez & Ayoze -> Siggy & Costa (4 points)

Santi versus Sanchez is the question. Sanchez worth the extra 1.8 million? Not sure.

No. Sideways, does not solve blank 33 week. Erik has good fixtures. SOU doesn't score enough.
