Monitor – Alexis Sanchez

With a single goal in his last six league appearances, Alexis Sanchez’s debut season in the Premier League seems in danger of grinding to a halt. After serving up 12 strikes and seven assists in the opening 21 Gameweeks, the Chilean’s displays made him a must-have for Fantasy managers but, in spite of Arsenal’s late surge up the table, his recent output has been minimal.

There’s no disputing the fact that Sanchez’ downturn has coincided with the return to action of Mesut Ozil. The German has started each of the last seven Gameweeks and managed two goals and five assists over that period, whilst Olivier Giroud has developed a source of consistency which has harvested six strikes and a trio of assists in his previous eight outings.

Despite his price of 11.4 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, Sanchez is still the third most popular midfielder – only Eden Hazard and Raheem Sterling currently sit in more sides. With some of his 30% ownership starting to scour the market for alternatives, we delve into the data to asses his displays over the two time frames in order to ascertain just what has gone wrong.

Trying not to cock it up. 🙂

At present I'll play it GW34 but waiting for confirmation of fixtures.

Same, can't see any other good use really. Most of the sides I'll be loading up on Gw34 with the WC will have good fixtures after also. Pool Gw35 in particular looks great and so do ARsenal and Chelsea Gw34-38

With so many balls in the air, a cock-up is a likely outcome.

Trying to close a 13-point deficit this GW for a ML cup final, whilst chasing a 75-point gap to ML 1st place. Money is at stake! ML cash is much higher than the cup final cash, so I think that takes precedence.

I hadnt seen this when posted below:
Obviously it would depend on the team I have now bit but what are others thinking-
I am thinking in game week 33 loading team full of chelsea and getting studge in up top for pool and getting rid of any arsenal.
( Front line would change from Aguero and Kane and AN other > Costa and Sturrudge and AN other)

In gamweeek 35 then get back in a heavy hitting are player like sanchez or giroud till end of season.

Please pick holes with this approach if you dont agree!

      What do ye reckon?

Chelsea the only team who don't look so out of place amongst the super-clubs.

Arsenal and City are so wank compared to your Bayern and Real Madrid's of the world.

Certainly not, no? In terms of quality of football, I can't imagine it being the case. On current form, I think any one Valencia, Atletico, Villarreal and Sevilla would give the top 4 PL teams a good run for their money.

Guess it depends on what you define to be a good league, if by competition at the top and entertainment value (f you will), then yeah PL and their tight runs for the top 4 are always great to watch. I prefer La Liga though and currently Bundeliga, it's just a melting pot on both leagues a plethora of football talent both individually and collectively as a team.

Agree for the most part. Besides the pundits, and fans I think even the players get affected by this mentality as they come in to Europe with a sense of entitlement before a match is even played.

If you live outside of England you can see this.

also English teams have been pretty bad in Europe lately because of their more attacking style. Chelsea are maybe the exception to the rule but they didn't exactly park the bus in Europe very well this year.

European teams play a better defensive game, might not be as entertaining to watch for some (I for one like defensive games with good tactics).

Liverpool dominated Europe with the more defensive style play in the past.

even an 'attacking' like Barca have an immense defence. they control games. they dominated City and not just in attack but in the way they owned the game and never looked like loosing or making sloppy mistakes like a lot of English teams do (look at Utd or Lovren for Pool for example). So many unforced errors.

even the bottom half of la liga is full of tactically superior defenders. I think it has a lot to do with a national style consistent and very tactical from the top level down to the 6 year olds in spain, germany, holland etc. The british style is less tactical and doesn't exist at the top level because of all the imports.
I am sure the national team suffers greatly for this too

                well said Champ.
This very well may come down to development at the youth levels and like you said the infiltration of imports.

Agreed, I just don't see tactically astute sides in England (apart from Chelsea) match up to the likes Leverkusen, Bayern, Juve, Barca, etc...
Maybe Pool next year if they qualify, as their 3421 is currently one of the best ones to dig into and pull apart on a tactical level.

It's great free flowing football though, fast-paced, but most of the "enlightened" managers if you will are in France, Germany, and Spain.

Soo how can you be the best league without the 'best' teams?

The usual response is that PL is better from top to bottom.

If that is the case then all that 'competition' should help the 'top' teams perform and improve but that hasn't been the case for several years now.

Sure its an amazing league, but a bit overrated IMO.

also the European teams seem to step it up in the CL..PSG are second in league, Alteti fourth, yet they both are in the last 8 of CL. where as the english teams seem to struggle in CL in recent times, I think it's the defensive game in England and mentioned above the tactics

        3. Billy Gilmore

Just look at the Bundesliga for example. Bayern - undoubtedly and incredible team - but them being far superior to the rest of the league means that there's not really a whole lot of point to the league - we know who's going to win before the season starts most of the time.

The difference in quality between the top and bottom clubs in the PL is less (in most part as the top clubs really aren't that good) which leads to a far more competitive league imo. Like Liverpool last season, most thought top 4 would be tough and they nearly finished top.

I think the added competition could well hurt the top teams as they're always under pressure in the league to perform and perhaps that affects European performances (the reverse of the Europa League hangover so to speak)

I do agree it is overrated though.

Well stated. I can totally see that side of the coin as well Billy. I think PL sides play way too many games throughout the season. The CC and FA Cup seem excessive to me.

All we do is expect performance from players but we disregard arguably one of the most important aspects, recovery. By this time of the year, most players are playing with knocks, and bruises of all sorts. Would love to see if there was any stats on the amount of injuries the top 4 PL sides have suffered throughout the years versus clubs in other leagues. Also, you can clearly see a dropoff in form as the season goes on. I'm witnessing with Alexis right now. Kun is also a good example.

I know this is no excuse but the point was raised earlier that Pool were in there worst form during group stages, Chelsea and City are struggling at the moment and Arsenal in the first leg were at their worst, to beat Monaco 2-0 at home is a great result

Real have a hit a bump in form and lost their home leg, only scrapped through

I think the FPL is a greater challenge than other leagues and teams have to play more games, this causes form to go up and down more often with momentum being gained and lost.

Barca did look in a different class today but if City were at their best they could have at least put up a fight.

Would have been interesting to see Pool in their current form in CL.

Out of everyone Arsenal were the unluckiest with an horror performance putting them out in the first leg against Monaco.

Easier on the eye if you don't type in the fixtures along with the player names. Most people know the fixtures anyway. But it's all good.

Quite a benching dilemma, I would sit Siggy on the bench.

If you get a chance in the future, you should downgrade to a cheap 5th mid and re-invest elsewhere.

I would ideally wait incase there's Arsenal DGW news but i just played with my potential DGW34 team and I have 0m in the bank when I get my ideal team,

So this Hazard rise may come back to bite me later. 😡

What's the latest by which Arsenal DGW 31 can be announced? And, what do i do now? 😕

Get Hazard, you simply don't want to be without.

If ARS GW is 31, use next week's FT to get Giroud in.

You will obviously have to go with only two Arsenal DGW players in this scenario unless you want to take a -4, but I think getting Hazard is a more immediate and effective move.

The thing is iId do Sturridge+Eriksen ➡ Benteke+Hazard but if there's a Arsenal DGW 31 then I'm tempted to get Giroud instead of Benteke.

I get Benteke tonight and they announce the Arsenal DGW 31 on Friday is the situation I'm dreading. 🙁

PVA out this week for a proven starter (Alder or Naughton spring to mind)

You would want this depth as Bellerin might not start, which leaves you with Lescott (mci) or PVA (terrible player and might not even play) as your auto-sub.

Ivan would be a luxury transfer in your situation, sure go for it if you want, but Terry is more than capable of getting points.

Hello All- Doing pretty well in my league and have wildcard in hand. When is the best time to play this?
Obviously it would depend on the team I have now bit but what are others thinking-
I am thinking in game week 33 loading team full of chelsea and getting studge in up top for pool and getting rid of any arsenal.
( Front line would change from Aguero and Kane and AN other > Costa and Sturrudge and AN other)

In gamweeek 35 then get back in a heavy hitting are player like sanchez or giroud till end of season.

Pleas pick holes with this approach if you dont agree!

    Eriksen - Silva - Cazorla - Hazard
    ........Giroud - Kane - Costa

Krul; Boyd - Wollscheid - Lescott

and pretty happy with it..I would like to see where Arsenal's DGW nets out before making any changes but it's looking pretty good and would eye Kane > Benteke for their DGW as well..

Really just comes down to who you rate for DGW cause you might as well get that player now and hold on to him.

Is it Austin or Giroud you want? Or is it someone like Benteke?

Mane and Siggy are the popular mids and are price enablers. Imo Silva and Eriksen are becoming expendable

Those with a WC and planning on doing some luxury transfers, are any of you building your side up to have an ideal XI Gw33? Or punting on the Villa vs QPR DGW? Both?

I for one, have been looking at Gw33 with the eye of Sauron for my side and although on current form much leaves to be desired, I think Everton may have the potential to be punt-worthy with an FT or two come Gw33. They play (BUR) and have (swa) prior to that Gw32, if the Toffees regain any form by then, the likes of Baines/Jagi or Lukaku could be great one week punts especially if the latter starts bagging in a few by then.

The usual suspects in City have (WHM) then as well, and if the Hammers don't improve their backline woes of late, this could be bloody.

Thoughts? Will dig in topic a bit deeper later in the month when the DGW's are confirmed, but for now I'm looking at building up to this (assuming Pool and Arsenal have their DGW Gw34).

Bearing in mind we're waiting for 2 DGW's to be confirmed, I'm having a GW31 punt and still looking at a strong squad for 33 then pop the WC for the DGW34 and the run in.
Confirmation of DGW's may change this but that looks the plan.

99% I will my WC in DGW34. However atm there are many routes to choose from.

I could use both of my FTs this week to make 2 very good transfers (PVA & Sterling -> Ivan & Mane). And then nextw eek with only 1 FT, I could go Giroud -> Benteke -> Giroud. Bold but could be gold.

otoh I might just do Sterling -> Mane this week and have 2 FTs for DGW31. Not so many inspiring options though.

fwiw I still think 3 CHE & 2 FTs are good enough for BGW33. Knowing when is ARS's DGW is key here.

Hey Nabil, wow those are great moves mate. Doesn't get much better than that really, I would to those moves no doubt can't think of a better way to obtain Ivan. I do like the Tekkers move as well, albeit it's a bit risky in your situation considering Gru's stellar form of late, may come great though considering he plays Pool that week. I'm looking at the same moves myself, only with Sturridge going for Tekkers, than coming back in Gw32 to captain.

Yeah 3 Chelsea is a give-in for Gw33, that third striker spot could be a good one to punt on for that GW. Really between Costa/Lukaku/Palace striker IMO, hopefully Lukaka comes good soon!

I have a WC and already (just by coincidence) can field a good 11 in 33 with one transfer, getting rid of Austin. If the fixtures are confirmed then I can sell Sanchez and take a midfield punt. I'm thinking City (already have Aguero/Silva). But looking at the fixtures, nothing is jumping out at me. My perspective on Burnley being an 'easy' fixture has changed after their results at the Bridge and last weekend, so not sure about Everton punts.
