The Digest – Gameweek 30

Our final look at the pertinent topics from Gameweek 30 sees us assess United’s resurgent Spaniard, Palace’s ascent under Alan Pardew and the relentless armband consistency of Tottenham’s new talisman.

The Player

Whilst Steven Gerrard did his best to hog the back pages with a 38-second dismissal, there’s no denying Juan Mata was the headline act in Sunday’s Anfield showdown. The Spaniard’s class and subsequent two-goal haul proved the difference as the visitors ended Liverpool’s 13-match unbeaten run with a dominant win, described by Louis van Gaal as “one of the most important moments in my career”.

Having failed to start any of United’s six matches between Gameweeks 23-28, Mata looked confined to a bit-part role but a suspension to Angel Di Maria has afforded him the chance to finally nail down a regular spot under the Dutchman. His involvement has helped the Old Trafford outfit to vital back-to-back wins over Champions League rivals Spurs and Liverpool and Van Gaal’s post-match praise of his role on the United right certainly bodes well for future pitch time, leaving Di Maria likely to occupy the opposite flank ahead of Ashley Young.

Impressively – given that he’s started just 19 of his side’s first 30 fixtures – Mata’s Anfield double takes his tally to seven for the season. That’s more than twice Di Maria’s three strikes and a total superior to all but one of his previous three campaigns in the top flight.

With the chase for a top-four spot intensifying, Mata looks to have rediscovered the level of displays that served up 162 and 212 points in his two seasons at Stamford Bridge. Van Gaal’s side don’t have it easy, though – showdowns with City and Chelsea in the next three will perhaps ensure the playmaker stays off our radars for now, though United, and Mata, have offered strong recent evidence to suggest that they have the form to prevail.

The Team

A 2-1 win at the Britannia elevated Palace into eleventh spot and continued their remarkable ascent under Alan Pardew. The Eagles have now served up six victories and a draw in ten outings since the new man took charge – harvesting a total of 19 points in comparison to the 17 points accrued in their first 20 fixtures.

With the emphasis on attack, Pardew’s decision to shift Jason Puncheon to the middle has allowed him to deploy Yannick Bolasie and Wilfried Zaha on the flanks and all three have prospered in recent weeks – Zaha has now struck in back-to-back matches, whilst the former two have three assists apiece over the last four.

Pardew’s decision to call upon Glenn Murray up front has also proved inspired. Handed just 16 minutes by Neil Warnock and farmed out on loan, Murray’s barged his way to the front of the pecking order in the new regime, with four goals, an assist and five bonus points in the last four.

It’s testament to Pardew’s approach that, since his arrival, only champions City have fired more shots inside the box than the Selhurst Park side. Whilst a lack of a double Gameweek may deter would-be investors, a schedule that pits them against Sunderland, West Brom and Hull in the next four should ensure their short-term prospects remain solid before the fixtures turns nasty in Gameweek 35.

The Talking Point

A three-goal haul against Leicester took Harry Kane to joint second in the overall Fantasy Premier League (FPL) standings and places the Tottenham youngster 16 points ahead of any other forward.

Given that Kane failed to start a single league match until Gameweek 11, his rise as a Fantasy force is all the more remarkable. Serving up 18 goals and five assists in 20 first XI appearances, he’s proven a fixture-proof option, too, delivering 18, 12 and 11-point hauls against Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal since the turn of the year. Putting his form into perspective, Kane has outscored Sergio Aguero by 14 goals to three in this calendar year so far with a series of displays that have persuaded almost 50% of FPL managers to snap up his services.

Even though we have three confirmed double Gameweeks on the upcoming schedule left to play, the issue now is – do we dare to look beyond Kane as a captaincy option? In his last 13 appearances, the 6.4-priced striker has produced seven lots of double figures and has blanked just four times over that run. Whilst Villa and QPR brace themselves for a double Gameweek 31, Kane prepares to square up to a Burnley side with the second worst defensive record in the top flight. Such is his form, there’d be no real surprise if he outscored the likes of Charlie Austin and Christian Benteke – indeed, it’s a sign of his stock that he’s currently neck-and-neck with Austin in this week’s Captain Poll, with 26% of the votes cast apiece.

Looking at Kane’s schedule, there’s arguably just one fixture that could pose problems – in Gameweek 34 away to a Southampton side with ten clean sheets in 16 outings at St Mary’s. Handily, Chelsea already have a double that week, giving us a rare chance to consider alternatives to the Tottenham man.

Even in Gameweek 37, when Arsenal are poised for a double, Kane threatens to cast a shadow over our armband intentions. Given that the Gunners travel to Old Trafford first of all, they could be solely reliant on a home clash against Sunderland to bring in the points. Kane, meanwhile, hosts Hull in the same round of fixtures and, as we’ve seen many times already, is more than capable of destroying any other rival as a reliable captaincy contender.

Not saying he's any better, but they aren't New Zealanders or Saffas.

If you spend your entire upbringing in a country you are from that country, as far as I'm concerned. You're not suddenly from another country as you've lived there for 4 years or whatever.

I swore to get rid of him this week (after international games), but with Silva, Hazard and Erik there already no one is screaming out to me.
Sanchez to Siggy to raise funds for Costa makes sense for me but seems an odd transfer.

Greetings from the Emirates. I come before you to unveil to you the appointment of the our noble Captain who's aiming to steer the mighty UAE to glory in this thing you call cricket. He has shown great insight, wit and charisma as well as a wealth of knowledge of this game. He has instructed me that wooden bats are preferred to solid gold ones, So I have had them replaced and the gold will be melted down to form a statue in his honour - mainly because it's an easy shape to form.

And also, because Im a sucker for alliteration, I present you you The Sultan of Swing, Captain Cheesoid!

I was put off this winter by form and rotation, but they seem to have started scoring again so I'm wondering if there is someone you would recommend I take a closer look at. Thanks.

If he gets passed fit, is there any better move than:

    Sanchez & Ayoze -> 4.2m & Costa

    for my lot this week?

Plan to WC in GW35 so will bring all the DGWers back in then.

    Myhill

It solves two problems for you and, given you could have a few more in defence, that might be better than punting on a DGW31 player.

Cheers. The lure of Benteke and Austin is quite strong but I can't see an obviously good way of getting them.

Perhaps Sanchez & Ayoze -> Siggy & Benteke? Annoyingly I am 0.1m short of doing this move with Santi.

Yeah, he looks more assured of mins and is on pens I guess.

You prefer Costa & 4.2m mid or Benteke & Siggy? The latter looks better to me, but would then probably have to bench Eriksen right?

As you won't be benching Kane, you're just going to be leaving money riding the pine with five good mids and three good forwards. Benteke could be a one week option, if he's fit but we'll have to wait and see on that.

Yeah, Benteke would likely go to the bench or be switched to Gru after the DGW

We had a chip pan when I was growing up and my mum did us chips in it seems pretty much most days when I look back now. The ceiling in that place was yellow as hell when we moved out.

I lived in a modern ranch style house for years which was built in the 50's. It had this absolutely kick ass countertop grill in the kitchen with a built in ventahood that actually went under the counter and out of the exterior wall behind. It was magic but I damn near smoked us out a few times. 😆

It was legendary. 50+ years of seasoning on those grill irons. Barely had to season anything. I so wanted to rip it out and take it with when we moved but that would've been in very poor taste. Sigh.

    The value of betting odds

Hello all (of all genders and species),

Does anyone use betting site odds to help in player selection and captain choice? Last week I had the armband on Kane until 6hours before kickoff when I noticed one of the betting sites was predicting 0-0 for the Tottenham match. I switched to silva (which was ok, yeah?)... But imagine my disappointment with the Spurs outcome!

So.... Do you use the betting odds to help make decisions? Do you feel that your own assessments and gut are more important? Can anyone really beat a bookie?

Nope. I pretty much just go with my gut.

Nah. And I really don't know why anyone does. Bookies adjust odds to sift the money to each side evenly and will even change them if the bets are favoring one result to the other.

No, I don't use the bookies' odds. They shift with the money and the crowd placing the bets aren't always the best judges.

Nope. The journalists' predictions are probably little better than your own.

Betting odds are not based on the actual probability of the event happening, they are based on the liabilities of the bookmaker.

There is always a ton of people wanting to back the players from the big teams o the layers keep their prices short. Given that they have big liabilitiees on those popular teams they are prepared to push others out to longer odds in an attempt to attract money

    A. Krul (sun) or Pantilimon (NEW)?
    B. PVA (NEW), Rose (bur) or Bertrand (eve)?
    C. Sinclair (DGW), Austin (DGW), Sanchez (LIV), Eriksen (bur), Silva (cpl) or Aguero (cpl)?

      A) Probably Pantilimon for the save points
      B) PvA - personal opinion based on unchecked belief a few cards get waved in Tyne-Wear derbies.
      C) I'm benching Sanchez. It seems wrong, but with two matches it's also quite possible my 4.6m DGW midfielder will score at least double what the out-of-form Sanchez scores.

Mane may be a solid choice. I've steered clear of the Saints mids and forwards recently because they were struggling to put the ball in the net, but that might be changing now. I'll have to look at him more closely.

I read somewhere that he was pushed to the flank last time out since Ronald tried to play Long + Pelle upfront. I wish he noe realized that Pelle is a donkey and Mane is the guy to play with Long.

Good point. This may take some forensic analysis though to identify possibilities (wingers matched up against stand-in full backs etc) because there seems to be enough inconsistency that people jump on the few options showing consistency. Still, I guess there's a few days to do the work.

I agree I would also consider PVA ahead of Rose. Spurs are crap at keeping their sheets clean

Time to remove Ozil and get a cheaper alternative

343 is a must I feel. Probably sell Ozil for Phillips (DGW) and upgrade Defoe
