The Digest – Gameweek 31

Our final look back at an eventful Gameweek 31 sees us bring Villa’s in-form talisman, QPR’s attack-minded displays and the dilemma over Diego Costa onto this afternoon’s radar.

The Player

Arriving at the club in the wake of a ten-match spell that harvested just two goals for Aston Villa, Tim Sherwood’s primary focus was to reinvigorate Christian Benteke’s misfiring season after the striker had scored just twice in the opening 25 rounds of fixtures. Considering that the Belgian forward has netted seven times in as many outings since Sherwood’s appointment, it’s clear he is profiting from the former Tottenham manager’s attacking philosophy.

With his confidence on the up, Benteke has returned to the barnstorming form that battered top-flight backlines in his debut season in 2012/13, where he racked up 19 goals for the midlands outfit. Sherwood clearly understands that if his side are to avoid the drop, involving the Belgian as much as possible is the best way forward and Benteke’s hat-trick against QPR last night highlights a shift in tactics since the new manager arrived. Under the stewardship of Paul Lambert, Benteke touched the ball an average of 47 times per appearance, while Sherwood’s presence has increased this figure to 70. He’s exerting a greater influence on opposing defences, too, boosting his average of 23 touches in the final third up to 36 touches in the last six outings.

Benteke’s red hot form has doubtless put him on the radar of a myriad Fantasy managers searching for a differential to set them apart in their mini-leagues. Given that his upcoming trips to Spurs and Chelsea are sandwiched by a Gameweek 33 blank, though, non-owners might be tempted to hold off until the Villains’ closing four fixtures, which affords them three winnable matches (EVE, WHU, sou, BUR) in front of their own fans.

The Team

Having found the net seven times in their double Gameweek, QPR are second only to Arsenal (nine to 11) in terms of goals scored in the previous four matches. The London club had surpassed the one-goal mark on just one occasion in the 13 fixtures prior to Gameweek 31, yet achieved that feat twice in a matter of four days, recording a 4-1 win over West Bromwich Albion and a 3-3 stalemate with Villa.

While Charlie Austin continued his surge up the goalscorer ranks with a brace over the course of the double – only Harry Kane and Diego Costa (19) have notched more goals than Austin’s 17 – Matty Phillips has taken up the mantle of chief creative outlet under Chris Ramsey. The 4.6-priced Phillips – a forgotten man under Harry Redknapp – has produced two goals and seven assists in eight appearances and offered Fantasy managers a real consistent source of points, blanking just twice over that run of matches.

Ramsey’s men will do well to perpetuate their scoring streak as they embark on a quartet of fixtures (CHE, WHU, liv, mci) against high-calibre opposition, with a blank Gameweek 33 also to factor in. As evidenced by the last few days’ events, though, Ramsey’s determination to go on the offensive in order to boost his side’s survival prospects suggests that their main men in the final third could still thrive – certainly, with their porous backline shipping 58 goals, more than any other side, the R’s boss certainly knows that attack may be his only form of defence.

The Talking Point

Diego Costa’s recent injury setback completely changes the dynamic of Chelsea’s double Gameweek 34. Although the combative frontman is targeting a return for the Blues’ trip to Arsenal (the first tie of their double), there surely remains major question marks over his start at the Emirates, with non-owners perhaps no longer needing to engineer a route into their squads for Costa. With Loic Remy (7.1) almost certain to be given the nod in Costa’s stead – having bagged the winners in Chelsea’s last two matches – Charlie Austin’s 22% ownership now have a perfect exit route lined up.

As another byproduct of Costa’s absence, Sergio Aguero’s patient 24.6% ownership can perhaps afford to resist shipping out the Argentine livewire in the hope that he’ll rediscover his rhythm in the near future. With a single assist in the last five, an Aguero-Costa swap looked the obvious option as a means of freeing up funds but many may decide to hold for now – after the trip to United, Aguero has three home fixtures in four (WHM, AVL, QPR) which could barely be more persuasive.

Certainly, Daniel Sturridge could potentially benefit from an upcoming double if Liverpool beat Blackburn in the cup tonight but, again, the former Chelsea man’s injury troubles are a real concern – as is his tally of two goals in eight appearances. A fully-fit Sturridge and Costa would certainly spark a significant exodus from Aguero owners but with both struggling to find a way out the treatment room, there’s few other options jumping out at us in the premium price bracket.

With the 10.9-priced Costa very unlikely to be handed two starts in the double, then, funds are freed up to invest more heavily in alternatives among Chelsea’s squad. For many, Eden Hazard and Branislav Ivanovic – sitting at the summit for midfielders and defenders respectively – are the two obvious options, leaving us with a free Chelsea space to fill. Given that Remy has managed four starts under Jose Mourinho, some remain unconvinced over his security of pitch time in Costa’s absence, though he clearly has the form to flourish regardless.

Providing Cesc Fabregas can steer clear of the referee’s wrath this weekend, he will avoid a two-match ban and with an assist in each of his last two, will also be earmarked by many, given that Oscar has failed to manage 90 minutes since Gameweek 23. The Spain international flew to Italy yesterday for surgery on a broken nose but is expected to feature at Loftus Road, with a protective mask enabling him to take part. Alternatively, John Terry’s three goals in four between Gameweek 17-20 highlighted his capabilities and if the Blues show any signs of increased resilience, he could prove a canny double-up option along with Ivanovic as Mourinho’s men close in on the title.

    He was right you know.
David and Kathleen Long from Scunthorpe they are, won the EuroMillions last week once gaain after winning it two years earlier.

Odds of which is estimated to be 283 BILLION to 1. A bit of luck helps..Just like in FPL.. 😉

  9. foley_fd

Judging by conversations on here, we are looking for strikers in a team with something to play for, and not suffering from injury or resting. Is this comprehensive?

    Giroud
    Rooney
    Aguero
    Kane
    Pelle
    Ings
    Austin
    Benteke
    Defoe

This excludes Berahino, Lukaku, Murray, Sakho and Gomis based on teams not having much to play for.

It also currently excludes Costa on the basis of his injury and Remy because we don't know how much game time he'll get.

    Have I missed anyone?

Mertesacker extreme should go to Italy, tactical game could make up for lack of pace, Hummels would be the best replacement though unlikely.

Yeah. I know Mert's has a lot of medals in his cupboard but I've never seen him as a great player...in fact I find him a bit underwhelming. I honestly think his trophy cabinet has a lot more to do with the quality of the other players in his team than anything he does....at both club and international level.

In terms of reading the game, tackling and winning it in the air, he's second to none. Its his lack of pace which exposes him, brilliant defender, but physical qualities really count in this league.

I think what made Mertesacker great is not what he does but what he enables others, like Koscielny, to do in games. It seems very easy to set up an understanding with him and that is key for a side to be able to defend as a team.

Do any of you consider yourself to be good at fantasy football? I was chatting with lads in my mini league, one of which came in the top 1k 5 seasons ago and he considers himself to be 'a good fantasy manager' he is however 500,000th this season. My arguement is that he's obviously not good otherwise he wouldn't be 500,000th...

Basically wondering what you lot consider makes you good at this game and if you think you are!

    1. Stats Don\'t Lie
      • 9 Years
      9 years, 1 month ago

I'm okay, not good. A good manager would be someone who gets a significantly better rank every season (eg goes from 50k to 10k) and has consistently good finishes for a few seasons (eg top 10k, 3 seasons running)

    2. Doolittle
      • 11 Years
      9 years, 1 month ago

I've played "properly" and used this site in 2 seasons - 2 years ago when I came 296, and this one (currently 7.3k, was as high as 281 earlier in the season). I think I am a decent manager when I put my mind to it, but I am under no illusions; it is largely based around coming on here.

If I didn't use stats and get advice on here, I doubt I'd be top 10k now, and I certainly wouldn't have been 296 2 years ago. I'd say that's true of most people, but I don't think it detracts from being a good manager.

I'd say everyone on here is at least a decent FPL manager, but compare someone like me (decent) to someone like Evs - now there is a great FPL manager.

I'm alright. My first season I started a number of weeks late so obviously did poorly but all the seasons since I've ranked between around 50k and 15k. Obviously never finished in the top 10k which is poor but I'm sure I'll get there eventually.

I think I'm ok, I have a few rules I try and stick too and they've worked well, Altho I bend them a lot!
Main one is my captain, I use it as who would be the last player I would bench, as in theory not captaining a player is similar to benching them, as you miss out on their points again.

I've had a good few seasons but it's about getting on runs early. Sanchez and Kane are why I'm where I am.

I really think he's the sort of guy who listens in to people down the pub saying stuff like 'they get paid too much' 'not enough English players' and 'I wanna see emotion from my players' and has used that as a manager. I'm also certain his team talks consist of 'want it more' 'win your personal battles' and other absolute cliche rhetoric crap. I don't usually have strong opinions, but he just infuriates me. Seems like he acts how he thinks jack the lad down the pub wants him too

Bookies say Myhill (though they probably did last week as well).

West Brom generally tighter than Sunderland, Palace generally more threatening than Leicester.

Some might say Sunderland have it all to play for and Palace are coasting, whilst Leicester need goals to stay up. Really difficult choice.

C if Costa is out for the season. B if he's not as I don't think you can say no to Hull (H)

think you have to play mane. dont think his starting place is a worry this weekend (assume that's the issue)

Mane. I know he has an unreal fixture but Austin is in the form of his life.

      Form over fixtures 😉

Starting my 5th MID Downing (STK). Think with Valencia coming back Big Sam will revert to diamond which gives Downing the free role behind 2 strikers. Regardless I've a feeling that he will be amongst points this GW as I saw him almost scoring a goal against Leicester.

In the 5 Major European Leagues (PL, Spain, Germany, Italy and France) only seven players make the top 50 lists for ALL of the following:

    - Goals
    - Passes
    - Dribbles

Without looking it up, can you name the seven?

number of passes? seems hard to compete in that and goals as surely the centre and deep mids dominate pass totals

I'm assuming that's meant to be assists (basically because it makes my thought process simpler) not sure if it's true though.

hmm, senegal's only game (as far as i can see) in the international break was in france. assumed it was just a classic case of mane held back right after an international break like always.
either way surely after a 1-0 defeat without him he comes straight back in
