Injuries

The Treatment Table – Gameweek 33

We roll out our usual Sunday evening look at the weekend’s new injuries, with City’s playmaker issuing positive news after being stretchered off during today’s win over West Ham.

Arsenal
Per Mertesacker is an early injury for the Gunners clash with Chelsea next Sunday after limping off on 63 minutes during the semi-final win over Reading. Arsene Wenger confirmed post-match:

“It’s an ankle injury. He limped badly so it doesn’t look too good really.

Aston Villa
Nathan Baker was replaced early on during the midlanders’ cup win over Liverpool today. After the match, Tim Sherwood confirmed he expects the defender to be ruled out for the rest of the campaign:

“We’ve not too big a squad and we’ve lost Nathan Baker today, Ciaran Clark last week, so we’ve got two fit centre backs. They did really well today, Jores Okore and Ron Vlaar. They’re the only two we’re going with between now an the end of the season, so we’re not blessed in defensive areas. It looks like Nathan’s season is over. It’s a really bad knee injury, and we know how long that normally takes.”

Chelsea
Jose Mourinho rolled out an update on Willian, after the winger was only fit enough to make the bench against United.

”Willian coming on was a bonus I wanted to give him, he’s been in bed for two days and today he came straight from his house, making himself available to give us some help, he was fantastic.”

Everton
James McCarthy is set to be assessed after sustaining an ankle knock in Saturday’s home win over Burnley.

Leicester
David Nugent was withdrawn from the starting XI as a precaution after picking up a calf problem during the warm-up prior to the Foxes win over Swansea.

Man City
David Silva was stretchered off during City’s win over West Ham after being elbowed by Cheick Kouyate. Refusing to blame the Senegal international. Manuel Pellegrini confirmed Silva – who needed several minutes’ treatment before leaving the field – was set for hospital scans:

“At this moment he is in hospital and they are checking if he has a broken bone in his cheek. I always think that a player doesn’t want to damage another player, the ref decided it was unintentional and I also think that.”

An hour later, though, Silva allayed fears of any injury by confirming he was given the all-clear:

“Many thanks to all the messages of support, all the tests have gone well and I’m already home.”

Post-match reports suggest Samir Nasri has sustained a leg problem after replacing Silva with quarter-of-an-hour left on the clock.

Southampton
Toby Alderweireld was stretchered off during the Saints loss at Stoke yesterday afternoon. The Belgian needed oxygen after sustaining a shoulder injury, with Ronald Koeman optimistic on his prospects post-match:

“Toby looks OK now. It’s his shoulder and we maybe have to wait until the scan or something else to know exactly what happened. It’s his shoulder but he’s back on his place and will be good I think.”

Stoke
Mark Hughes has confirmed that he is having to manage Peter Crouch’s pitch time over the run-in as a result of an ongoing groin problem. The big striker has failed to start the last three and was afforded just 15 minutes against Southampton yesterday, with his manager conceding:

“Crouchy is struggling with a groin problem at the moment and the likelihood is that he is going to need an operation once the season ends. At the moment he is probably only fit enough for 25 to 30 minutes at the end of games so we are having to be careful with how we utilise him.”

West Brom
Craig Dawson was replaced on 71 minutes during the Baggies win at Palace after picking up a knee injury, according to match reports.

If Silva is out it will force me to play Kane. I guess that wouldn't be the worst scenario..

I think that's partly also due to a lot of people owning either single or double southampton defence.

Really? I'm leaning towards Coutinho. Being nominated for the PFA award surely will motivate him to continue his form. Sterling can't finish chances and is due a rest soon, right?

It really is a lottery. I think Sterling because in Sturridge's absence he will be up top, Coutinho has never been a consistent FPL option and won't score long range goals every week.

I'm cooling heavily off of Ivanovic...his stats from the last 6 gameweeks vs the rest of the season prior that are WAY down in nearly every single respect..

Whenever I buy him Mou seems to get his Ivanovic leash out. Next season he'll be in my GW1 team and I'll just leave him there all season. One of those keep or ignore players.

honestly I'm really liking this for my current WC draft:

    .................Schmeichel
    ......Skrtel - Schlupp - Smalling
    Coutinho - Hazard - Mata - Ramsey
    ......Benteke - Aguero - Giroud

    Ospina, Albrighton, Terry, Tobyy

Its now a choice between Sterling and Coutinho.

Hendo can't be an option because Lucas is out so Gerrard will play Gerrard will steal set pieces and pens as well as forcing Hendo to play deeper to help out defensively. If Gerrard is dropped and Allen plays Hendo may keep set pieces but he will still need to play deeper.

He isn't a Lucas type though. He will definitely need some help back there and he does like to get forward himself sometimes.

I'm not sure Lucas v Allen makes too much of a difference to Hendo's positioning.

Besides, if Allen starts which I expect he will then he will at least have pens and most set pieces.

Just did a quick comparison of Henderson and Allen over GW26-GW30 when Lucas wasn't playing. Henderson had a shot every 60mins and created a chance every 118 minutes. Not good.

      Out of those two, Sterling.

I'm quite happy about the Henderson trauma, he's in a few rival teams and I want to bring in an alternative so Coutinho is hopefully going to pay off (I have Sterling already).

If Silva is out I'll be getting Sterling alongside Coutinho and won't bother getting a Liverpool defender. Can't afford him instead of Coutinho though, not that I think there is that much between them anyway.

For me Coutinho is the winner simply because I can't afford Sterling as well as a new Liverpool defender. He's playing as a false 9 with Sturridge out so he'll get plenty of opportunities in front of goal.

played once as a false 9. sterling started striker vs villa. besides the false 9 role doesn't mean more opportunities in front of goal. also I dont think gerrard will start regardless.

Thats fine, its interesting that Sterling was a false 9 this time. Perhaps they will rotate that role? Not a lot in it between them I don't think. Gerrard may or may not start but we don't know, if he does start then thats bad for Hendo, will you want to take that risk?

not a false 9, a striker. very different. the newcastle game was the first time I ever seen a no striker formation at liverpool iirc. coutinho played it brilliantly I thought.

Afternoon DZ, my one dilemma this week is whether to do Krul > Schmeichel for a hit. My other keeper is Pantilimon, but Newcastle and Sunderland look unlikely to keep any clean sheets anytime soon and Schemichel is always good for save points, has a DGW, and some nice fixtures coming up. Reckon it's worth a hit or shall I ride out the season with these Krul Panti's?

I think keep Krul and remove Panti..but none for a hit...if only you can do for free..taking a hit doesn't make sense in this case just for save points..

I can't see Newcastle keeping any clean sheets for the rest of the season and Panti has a DGW so I'm inclined to keeping him.

I can see the move paying off. A Leicester CS against Burnley would have already made the move a success, and with Burnley's leading goal scorer on a 6 hour goal drought it would defiantly be worth the gamble.

Leciester are going all out attack so they aren't too defensively concerned, so the only pro I see for Schmeicel is save points. Not worth a hit imo

    Schmeichel

    Hazard, Silva, Fabregas, Sterling, Henderson

How is this WC team looking?
    Schmeichel (Gilks)
    Ivan, Skrtel, Toby (Debuchy, PvA)
    Haz, Fab, Sterling, Hendo (Cork)
    Kun, Vardy, Gir

I'm keeping 2 itb for Fab->Sanchez in GW 35. Not really confident about Debuchy, do you think he's worth the risk?

I expect Debuchy to seal his place by GW35. My only question is do you want four good defenders going forward or would it be better to keep more cash in the bank to upgrade Vardy or Cork?
